Beth is really something. She is one of a kind, so emotional yet powerful. Like Janis, but sometimes she also reminds me a little of Billie Holliday. If you liked Beth singing in this style, I recommend you watch the video of Beth w/Joe Bonamassaa singing "Strange Fruit", the classic anti-lynching song that Billie made famous and was arrested for her insistance on singing it. It is very haunting and you must read the lyrics. Beth does a fabulous job - of course.
From the moment I saw Beth's first video, I knew she was divine. Her pieces :"Am I the one" ( live at Paradiso Amsterdam) "Mama this one's for you" and the beautiful "I'd rather go blind" (in Amsterdam) are really crazy for the strength the first, the tenderness the second and the anger despair and sweetness of the last, are a panorama of her ability to immerse herself in the characters, and make them live to everyone who sees and listens to her. Thank you Beth for these gifts ! !❤ Love from Italy.Roma.
Beth Hart is absolute gold, Biz. She is one of best singers I have ever listened to and that's a mighty long list. She's up there with Ann Wilson and Linda Ronstadt for me. She's every bit as good as Janis, who was before my time. Today I am a Tatiana nut, since I'm a metal head at heart. Tati is the Queen, but Beth is her blues equal. I dig some Maria Brink or Courtney LaPlante as well, but when I want to chill out and be amazed, I listen to Beth Hart. The stuff she did live with Joe Bonamassa is absolute magic.
Great reaction to a classic, spell-binding Beth Hart performance. Enjoyed your comments and thoughtful analysis. Yeah, you see this all the time with Beth’s performances- a reactor just looks directly into the camera and laughs (like, WTF?). BTW, this song is about an addictive, but abusive, relationship. Beth has a long history-before she married husband Scott Guetzkow in 2001-of terrible choices in men. For example, at age 12, she had a 6-month “relationship” with a 40 year old man and at 14 she ran away to NYC with a violent 25 year-old drug dealer. (Just prior to getting married, she was with the guy with face tattoos who appears in her first Music Video for her 1999 hit song “LA Song”--the one seen pushing her at the start of the video). Apart from “Caught Out,” she was written many songs about abusive relationships like “Fire on the Floor” and “Setting Me Free.” She credits Scott with saving her life and has been married to him for 22 years now.
LIVE ALBUMS: (all live albums are must buys) 1) “Live at Paradiso” (2005): Legendary concert caught on film. Hard to find and price fluctuates widely ($25 to $100) 2)”Live in Amsterdam” (2014): with Joe Bonamassa’s band, part of a 4 city/5 show Northern European Tour to support the 2013 “Seesaw” album of blues and soul cover songs. 3) “Live at the Royal Albert Hall” (2018): Killer concert, Beth’s band emphasizing Beth’s singer-songwriter ballads. 4) “Front and Center-Live From New York” (2018): Excellent, but not as important compared to the 3 above. There are also about 20 full-length Beth concerts available on YT.
Hey, I noticed you’ve previously reacted to both Melissa Etheridge’s “Like The Way I Do” and Humble Pie’s “I Don’t Need No Doctor.” Beth has also covered both of these songs in concert (not on albums). For “Like The Way I Do,” Beth sung this in her appearance on “Star Search,” an earlier pre-cursor to American Idol, in 1993 at age 21 (winning the Female Vocalist competition)- ua-cam.com/video/yFA6dcLJAKc/v-deo.html . What’s interesting about the clip is how it shows a relatively unpolished Beth, but the massive talent and charisma are unmistakable. She just slaughters her competiton week after week (even though the other contestants can really sing, it’s an embarrassment when pitted against a force of nature like Beth). For “I Don’t Need No Doctor,” Beth does this at the Paradiso concert in 2004 (age 32). This is hard core Beth, high energy rock n roll, similar to Humble Pie’s version- ua-cam.com/video/W5XoP755yC8/v-deo.html
