  • Why does she say it's 4B and the title says 4C? • Just to clear things up
    When I made this video, Andre Walker's Hair typing chart stopped at 4B, which is why I originally referred to my hair type as such. But the truth is, my hair type was not represented in his system, which is why I re-titled the video 4C.

    Omg! I love that u seem to embrace your hair texture. Many with 4b/ 4c hair type hair on UA-cam seem to be trying their best to wash and go it into 3 anything hair type. They say they have curly hair and bash products that don't manipulate there hair enough to make look like the 3's hair type. We need to appreciate what we have been given and not call it want it's not. Why is it so important for that type of hair to be called curls? Love your hair people.

  • @BklynBabe
    @BklynBabe 9 років тому +93

    The reason you don't have definition is because your texture is cottony or spongy, not because your type is 4b or 4c. And yes, 4c is very flat coils, which is basically an incredibly tight curl. It is the most curly hair pattern. Now people want to get crazy and say they have 4c or def, xyz, nd call their hair unmanageable....when they probably have coarse strands, wiry/spongy/cottony textures, and a highly dense head of hair. There are way more "labels" to put on hair tan just curl type/pattern. Also if your hair is dry, this can cause a loss of definition too. Hair with a proper moisture/protein balance curls the best. Porosity, therefore, is a strong factor in how your curls define. And also external factors such as products, humidity, and manipulation...
    As for ssks, the knots form when you pull a coil out and it springs back on itself, just like when you stretched it, you could see the knot form and tighten. That strand didn't even have a knot until you started pulling it a few times. This is why stretched hair is best to avoid knots, and oils to reduce friction.
    Your hair does best when you listen to it! :)

      peace sis what you're describing is characteristics of the classification 4c, that is my hair type my hair. is very healthy highly moisturized and remains tightly curled with no distinct definition of curl pattern until pulled out or a fallen strand. I don't understand your premise, understanding curl structure educates people on care again you're supporting the 4 c structure, please clarify

    • @BklynBabe
      @BklynBabe 9 років тому +22

      +aswee01 what I am saying is that the structure of the curl (curl type) is different from the texture of the hair, and that IMO texture plays a more important role in the look and reaction of hair. A "silky" 4b and a "cottony" 4b look and react completely different to products and manipulation. I'm saying that just using a number and a letter to determine hair is extremely limiting and that there are way more qualifiers involved. Peace :)

      +BklynBabe Right ! My hair, which I call fine 4a/b ,can look like it belongs to 2 different people depending on what's in it! When dry, it's hard to comb,feels wiry & is just hard to manage. With the right products so that it's well moisturized , conditioned with a good protein conditioner & proper amount of natural oils it feels nice & smooth & looks like variously sized little 4a & b curls..some looser than others. I have about 3 or 4 texture/curl variations in the 4a/b categories.

We have people who commented pretty recently (not back in 2010) making comments about her mishap. Like come on people, read. Work with the rest of the functional world for once. Vidal Rivas oil and water is good for really dry hair. With 4c hair you have to wet it to style it. If you wet it use a mixture of water and oil. My hair loves olive oil so that's what I use. You also should use a deep conditioner. The kind with oils in it. I use creme of nature argon oil shampoo and conditioner because they work and not expensive. If you are interested in how to take care of your hair look up porosity. That is more important than anything when determining what to do to your hair. Start there. Then after that look up oils and conditioners because depend on your porosity you will know what to use. It will help you understand your hair alot and what it acts like and why .

      I do not see a curl pattern. Her hair reminds me of a brilo pad (its a cleaning sponge with many tight coils) if you have to zoom in with a camera to see "curls" then why even call it curly? i think there is a difference between curly and coily (kinky) hair. people with 4c hair have to use so mucj product just to get a little definition. this is way different than curly (4a/4b/type 3) and people do not recognize that.

    Marilyn Weaver I'm of mixed race. My mother has this 4c hair and my father has the straightest hair imaginable. When I was younger, I had hair like your daughter's. It's changed a lot growing up, but I would also go into fits of not letting anyone do my hair. I would highly recommend using the Tangle Teezer as opposed to a comb. When you do detangle her hair, make sure it is covered in a product that has a lot of slip. I usually wash my hair (focusing on cleansing the scalp more than the actual hair), apply my deep conditioner on my wet hair, then section my hair into levels (like one would in order to put on clip in extensions), and gently comb the hair, working your way up to the roots from the ends to minimize tangles. When rinsing out the deep conditioner, just let her head sit under the running water, you do not need to comb or run your fingers through too much. You might have to experiment as see what products her hair likes better. Try mixed chicks, shea moisture, etc. Make sure to use a leave in conditioner/butter/oil - just whatever her hair prefers. Then my mother would braid my hair in regular pigtails or a french braid. Just make sure it's not too tight. You also go not need a hair tie on the top of the braid, only at the ends. Braiding always helped because I could go a few days without anyone having to comb my hair. If the braid became too frizzy, they would spritz my hair with some water, maybe add a bit of product and just redo it with the sections that were already in place so that nothing became tangled. I hope that helped!!

Neither will predict how your hair will react to protein, henna, or other products though, so in that way, they didn’t help me. If you have more than two types on your head, all that hair-typing can be bothersome. It’s easier to just say “tightly coiled”.

    I have 4c hair and after a year and a half of experimenting I finally got a nice curly twist out and up do. I found out to achieve that look, I needed several days of product buildup on my hair. Although expensive, I use the Hydrathema Naturals line on my hair. Then, to get the curly texture I use Beautiful Curls by Alaffia purchased from Whole Foods Market. It completely changed the look of my 4c hair. Then, when I shampoo it's back. Sorry, not into video posting yet.

    Thank you! Very candid and gentle for people like me who are totally ignorant about hair unlike our own. I have never actually touched natural hair curlier than 2c. Mine is 2a, I think. If I had never seen Asian hair up close I would have assumed mine was type 1.
    The word "follicle" means the part of the skin that makes the hair. It is the tiny bit of flesh that can sometimes pull off if you pluck a hair. To talk about an individual hair, I usually say it just like that; an individual hair. Preparing to write this paragraph, I searched for a better word. Suggestions came up of shaft or filament. To me, individual hair feels more natural to say. Hope that helps.
    Stay amazing. Stay candid.

    This video is a bit old. When Andre Walker first came out with the hair typing system it stopped at 4B, which is what I was referring to BUT, many naturals including myself found that my hair types did not have any curl pattern and therefore self categorized it as 4C. Hope that's not too confusing ;-/

    I think I understand what you mean and how it could be confusing but if you think of it in terms of what pattern is this may help. A pattern is something that you can reliably expect to repeat itself. 1234 1234 1234 is a pattern. 4c hair does not usually follow a reliable pattern. Yes! there are plenty of curls (which I consider moreso coils) but they're all kind of doing there own thing which is why many 4c sisters may be more prone to breakage and single strand knots. Hope this helps!

    Thank You So Much!!!! For years I have been trying to figure out what my hair type is and now I can truly search for what can help me in my hair's natural state.It hurt so bad to take care of it naturally( literally painful), so I resorted to relaxing and for years. I felt like a reject cause I couldn't maintain my natural state and I'm lighter in skin tone than you...So automatically people assume its the European look I am trying to achieve, but now seeing this I will give my 4C a chance

Anywho im glad i watched this vid im now closer to determining my hair type im now certain im a 3 b or c

    I love the way you made this video and explained everything, it's like a documentary. I still don't know if there's really a 4b and 4c hairtype. I call myself 4b and my hair is pretty much the same. I guess 4b is a LITTLE bit looser curl, but not really. As far as SSKs, I leave them alone and just keep moisturizing and deep conditioning.

    I have a coworker with lots of different textures and it's really difficult to style because products that work in one section doesn't seem to work in a different section. She's got to pay close attention to what section of hair your styling in order for it to come out consistent.

    I'll have to make a vid on that one day. But mostly products from Shea Moisture, Giovanni, Kinky Curly (not the custard tho). I use my own Shea Butter mix. I'll be adding that to the blog soon. Bklyn Babe, you are wise on the hair thing. I applaud you. Not many people have this understanding. Instead they are more concerned about calling people OUT. Something that is very hard thing to do when the person being viewed is putting herself in plain view of everyone to judge. She is most likely not sure of her hair curl pattern 4b or 4c...or maybe her hair is a mixture of the two. Reiterating what you said: Hair goes deeper than curl type/patterns. Also, hair textures can take on different personalities. Some people whose hair seem to be the same upon sight may still differ in their reaction to certain types of manipulation and products.

    My personal opinion and knowledge about natural hair . Yes you do have a curl pattern , if you used a magnifying glass to look at your hair you would see lots of tiny curls or zig zag like patterns. You just don't have any definition in your curls. I suggest you do more research on your type of hair which clearly looks like 4c hair . Research products for 4c hair and see what products work best in your hair. Try the Herbal Essence hair product line. I love the Yellow and blue bottle it gives my hair a lot of moister and brings out my curls and the few waves I have in my 4c hair.

    I was just thinking the same thing as nisy221.I too am so happy to see someone with my type hair knots and all. However after years of back and forth natural I decided not to cut the knots because once cut they will return. So I figure I will leave them there to anchor down that hair strand and once my hair reaches the length I want then I cut them off and keep cutting like monthly to quarterly; but right now I got years to go.
