- Jerry Lawler does a interview about how USWA is moving to Midnights on Saturday. I guess the powers that be wanted children's programming on at 10 am instead of Billy Travis. After that is a rundown of the next card main evented by Dutch Mantel vs Tommy Dreamer. Both men do a interview about the match.
I miss Memphis Wrestling. Lance Russell, Dave Brown, and the rest. Great stables of wrestlers, managers, feuds
This is what wrestling needs, wrestling in the studio.
+Christopher Casey Well NXT is kind of an updated version of wrestling in a studio. Small crowd (less than 500 people), great atmosphere, fans are closer to the ring and entrance ramp, etc.
You been keeping up with NWA Powerrr?
Yeah more niched than it already is?
@@jonathanturbide2232 NWA babby.
Timmy, thanks for posting this. I was not living in the area when the USWA folded, but was a fan of Memphis wrestling from 1986 on. I always wondered how everything unfolded in the fall of 1997. This was the sad end of an awesome era.
If you pull up Lawler's podcast from a couple years ago he gives a whole new reason USWA was canceled. Not because mean Bill Clinton did it lol.
Midnight USWA, 1AM was ECW. I turn 36 this coming August...ugh I miss my youth
Grew up in Philly south jersey and GTW48 showed ECW NWA WWF WCW plenty of indy wrestling I turn 41 this august
And yet Years Later Saturday Morning Cartoons are Now Officially No More.
King Jerry's Rock' n Rasslin'
He's actually right. There was a huge to do about that when it happened. It happened right along side the TV ratings that started popping up on the air as well. Networks had to carry X number of educational programming hours a week or be fined. And by 1996-1997, afternoons were filled with talk shows so the easiest place to stick it was on Saturday mornings. The ratings probably had little to do with it since Memphis still drew better ratings than any network show in that time slot.
I remember this announcement well. I was very disappointed, but made it a point to be up on the first Sat at midnight. Imagine my reaction when there was no wrestling at midnight.
So far as I know, wrestling never actually moved from Sat. mornings.
Jerry shows his disdain for Slick Willy & Tree Owl Gore!
Jerry lawler did co own the cwa/uswa
I don’t think they made Michael St. John the main announcer till the last six months of the USWA’s. He was usually just a guest host when lance russell, Dave brown, or Corey maclin couldn’t be there
I remember watching this and I remember the "midnight era"...Wild times. We weren't without Saturday morning wrestling for long though. Powere Pro, Memphis Championship Wrestling, etc. were soon to follow.
I remember watching this show. I had a feeling it would hurt the territory. They were already doing shows at the casinos & the "Big One"
This makes no sense because the power pro wrestling that premiered a year later was on Saturday morning
Lawler had another promotion that aired on channel 30 in Memphis during the mid-2000's.
What was the Name of it Kevin e
@@michaelorick2197 I think it was called Memphis Championship Wrestling.
This move was possibly the final nail in the coffin for Memphis wrestling.
This was just about the end. They ran that September 6 show he's promoting, and then the final show in the history of the company was September 14
I love the attacks in the studio on the wrestlers
boy, they squeezed it as much as they could. i never watched this but you can tell lawler was getting old and after 20 years i guess it was time.
Let's be honest, when the Monday night matches moved to "The Big One", it was long since over.
Btw, weren't they at the Pyramid for a bit?
Scott H I thought the WWF was at the Pyramid for a while because they talked about it as the invasion angle with the USWA versus McMahons cronies. There was a group of Memphis fans who wanted to make the Mid South Coliseums a historical landmark, but its time to let it go. I feel the same way about the Royal Farms (formerly Baltimore) Arena which has tons of great WWE, and NWA cards, but its time replace that 52 year old building, otherwise they're stuck with Baltimore Blast indoor soccer. I hope they can rebuild part of the Convection Center and add a 18,000 seat facility, the handwritings on the wall.
When Memphis wrestling was no longer in the Mid-South Coliseum, it was a matter of time before it all would come to an end.
i believe Dutch Mantel waz the last unified champion before it closed up for good
I agree a hundred million percent..;)
Kevin Lawler is having live shows every Thursday night at the Raliegh Springs Mall. They're supposed to be televising it on a local Memphis cable channel. Hopefully they'll wind up here on UA-cam.
"the end of the great Saturday
morning wrestling programs."-🤔🖥🇺🇲..
I'm sure NBC was happy about one of their affiliates airing wrestling instead of Saturday Night Live. Wonder how long that lasted?
Isn't Memphis in the central time zone? Midnight in memphis is 1:00 AM in my neck of the woods, it didn't last long, USWA was about to close its doors anyway
Alright so I'm not a USWA historian but what the hell is going on, why do they all look like they are bizarro/crossover wrestlers from a parallel universe?
7:19 Jim Neidhart/Tank Abbott vs. Razor Ramon
7:25 Jesse Ventura/SGT Slaughter vs. Crow Sting
8:12 Jerry Lawler vs. Goldberg
8:25 Kane/Demolition Smash vs. Some guy who looks NOTHING like "dangerous"
Then at 11:25 we got "Samurai" Steve Austin, a pre-nWo member ( who also looks a bit like Scott Steiner in some way... if Big Poppa Pump never had roids ) and Kane/Smash again!
What in the world!
Because Memphis was WILD man 😁
Saturday mornings in Memphis were never the same
Corey Maclin is who really killed it
People kids aren't gonna watch wrestling that late back then. A lot of people our doing stuff on saturday night. I agree with you there. I sleep late on saturday morning because there is nothing on.
Team Icon! Dirty Dutch at the Helm...
They tore it up
Did they quit doing Louisville and Evansville??
My guess is that Lawler was working the fans. By 1997, saturday morning TV was no longer in style anyway...everything was focused on Mondays....I think that might have had more to do with it than Prez Clinton....just my opinion.....
I have a few questions. Did any of the midnight shows air? Also, If they did air what did they do? Tape the show in the morning?
I believe it was taped in the morning and aired at midnight
1:54 appear to be Lawler's dates for the evening.
Geez , they are young for wrestling fans. I guess Jaime Dundee was right about his dad having relations with preteens.
Life long republican Jerry says "Our good friend Clinton" lol
Interesting because in an magazine interview he said he wanted to piledrive george w bush
@@zt1053 he ran for mayor as a Republican and said democrats ruined memphis lol
Democrats ruined Memphis...lol. But RepubliKKKans ruined everything and everywhere else.
@@MrNWA4Life the KKK were democrats. Black men started the republican party.
@@MrNWA4Life you think from start of KKK to MLK and Malcom X deaths they were republicans you need a history lesson.
Memphis wrestling was the best
But at least I can still watch the episodes online. But, really, there's so many B, C, and D-level indy promotions (just some personal rating system) that air their weekly shows on the internet that I can't get to all of them. TCW by far is the most entertaining C Promotion thus far. They're not on the same level as WWE, or other organizations like Pro Wrestling Ohio, but they really do stand out. I haven't even seen the damn show in like 4 months though, so for all I know it's bad now. Doubt it
I am huge biggest fan of the original memphis wrestling and i have couple some memphis wrestling book collection on Amazon online on my mother cellphone one of day of weeks
curious what were the crowds like at mid south coliseum in the 1990s did they draw any big crowds at that point
Doomsday's showing shades of Kane, or vice versa
What's a VCR?
Something I still have one of so I can watch my old video tapes of these type matches.
This was the end
damn..that card at the big one sounds like a big dud..except for Dreamer of course...
Now they don't show wrestling in Memphis at all. They tried to bring it back a few months ago with a West AR promotion called Traditional Championship Wrestling (which I thought was really damn good for the amount of no-names in the indy world on the roster performing at a decent level) Memphis was one of the first two channels to carry TCW, and AFAIK the only channel to drop TCW in lieu of reruns of random syndicated shows nobody gives a shit about. Now they're in 50 markets, sans Memphis.GRRRR
My son lives in Walnut Ms.!!!!
Zeb has changed lol
VCR's? WTF is that? lol
Jerry lawler gotten old in wwe he did not pursued other endeavors.
They went out of business before they aired more than 2 or 3 if any midnight shows.
No, I'm afraid you're wrong. This was a couple of years before they ended in '97. They were having shows in the Big One way before the end!
Wrestling was over long long before this! wrestling sucks now!
He totally broke character here
Who's the Lord Humongous wannabe?
Nightwing Grayson Glen Jacobs aka Isaac Yankem aka The Christmas Creature aka Unabomb aka Fake Diesel better known as KANE!
Did Bush do away with the mandate?
I strongly doubt it.
Well it doesn't exist now so somebody did
"I never liked Tommy Dreamer
still don't,
to me he was a boring wrestler,
and was just uninteresting."-🤔🖥🇺🇲..
$25 if someone can tell me what the fuck the big one is and if dreamer won or not....
The Big One is the flea market. is the Dreamer the Dream Machine?
Tony Webb
Tommy Dreamer. So I guess I owe you $12.50..;)
Shit, that was on the tip of my tongue. You can just bye me a couple of beers sometime.
Tony Webb
lol..ok..find out if Dreamer won and you can get the rest...lol
+Chris Nata It was stopped. There was no winner.
I was working at a mid market station as a director when Clinton did this, we got more hate calls from parents over the new programming then we ever got before.
Really? I thought parents would have approved the changes, what's best for their kids.
@@christophercasey6775 leave it to democrats to ruin everything
