The depth of analysis in describing the physical details is wonderful. Movies are highly dependent on cinematography to communicate a particular mood or time or place. As important as these things are I have to think that few people pay much attention to them. That is until someone like Emmanuel Lubezki wins three consecutive Academy Awards for Best Cinematography for Gravity (2013), Birdman (2014), and The Revenant (2015).

Marisa Sullivan But it wouldn’t have seemed right at all to me. I wasn’t really a fan of how they did it in Bohemian Rhapsody as it even looked fake. Whereas Rocketman, where Taron Egerton actually sang, was a lot better even though he didn’t actually sound 100% like Elton. Judy is a great film and it wouldn’t be the same film if they had Renee lip sync. That’s just my opinion on the matter.

Perhaps the intention here is to give people a drive to go back and rediscover Judy Garland for themselves.

This didn’t quite get there. I felt bad for Judy and the product of the system she’d become. Hollywood should be ashamed. That being said, something was still missing.

I love Judy Davis in all things, particularly 'Me and My Shadows'. The TV movie was well done, supervised by daughter Lorna Luft, signed off by the family and cast with actresses at the appropriate stages of her life. Nevertheless, the film told her whole life story through the lens of her daughter's book and Judy Davis lip-synched her entire role. 'Judy' isn't an autobiography - it tells the very last weeks of Garland's life. Weeks, not years. If you look at the real artist in photos and videos, it was clear she was on her last leg. Renee did her a kindness by portraying her as, even fictionally, someone who was still trying to hold it together. The truth was that she was a serious addict and she had wrecked her health trying to keep up a certain lifestyle. Renee didn't play only the dark side of her and she didn't try to mimic her - she paid homage to her and that, to me, is what makes her performance shine.

I cannot swallow Renee with her constant eye squinting and lip puckering doing Judy. There are thousands of actresses in Hollywood who would have done a much more believable job in portraying this icon. Whose idea was it to pick Renee????

I just wonder why they chose to go with Renee’s voice instead of Judy’s? Renee is certainly a capable singer, but when you compare the audio, it’s like night and day. You just can’t emulate Judy, vocally. Maybe they did it so the focus wouldn’t be on her singing, but instead on her character...but I feel like some will avoid the film, some very big Judy fans, because they won’t be able to tolerate the lack of Judy’s actual singing. I guess it would be like doing a Streisand film and not have Streisand’s actual voice. I don’t think I’d enjoy it as much as I would if they used actual Streisand performances. If I were Renee, I’d have been TERRIFIED to try to fill those shoes.

Because this is not a mimic of Judy Garland this is an interpretation of Garland which is the point of film.

I saw the film .. it works... at this point her voice was a bit temperamental so it all added to the drama of the last few months of her life amid her personal struggles...

I am so glad I am not the only one posting about the non-resemblance of their voices as I have been doing this for 2 months already... But, I guess they had no copyright of the Judy Garland songs license or they just wanted to create controversy around this subject...

Verbs describe us - I think they are following a recent trend, actually. The Elton John biopic has the lead actor singing...and the Freddie Mercury biopic had much of the audio vocals replaced with both the lead actor at times and Marc Martel, a man who sounds virtually identical to Freddie. Judy is a much bigger personality, arguably, as would be Streisand, so I would’ve preferred to have them dub Judy’s vocals in...but I’m thinking they’re just going for the Oscar route? 🤷‍♂️

I don't doubt that she is in contention for an oscar................but, not because she deserves one! Renee Zellweger doesn't look, sound, or sing ANYTHING like Judy Garland. With those limitations, she deserves a sympathy oscar for the category, "most miscast actress in a film." In some strange way, she actually isn't BAD! That doesn't mean GOOD! The film itself traces the "train wreck" that was the last year of Judy's life. Is it sad? Yes. Is it somewhat entertaining? Yes. Is it exploitative? ABSOLUTELY!
