How to install fuel injection on your International Scout (Hamilton system)

- Interested in fuel injecting your Scout? Well here ya go. We are going to dive in and hopefully take some of the mystery out of it. This is by no means intended to be a be all, end all install, but should highlight most of the areas needed for you to have some insight into what you should prepare for. Also I mentioned in the video that an older laptop was required. I have discovered that is not really true. While it may be easier to load WINALDL and driver on an older laptop it will work on a newer one. You just have to ensure that it doesn't connect to the internet and dowload new drivers automatically once the proper drivers are installed for the comm. cable.

Nice work Levi. Always super clean on the install and you know this backwards and forwards and it shows!
Thank you!!
Neat. I installed a GM TBI on a Ford 302 in a Jeep YJ a few years ago. I used a 91 Caprice ECM with EBL Flash installed for tuning, ran really great.
Nice video, Levi! My daughter’s Scout came with HFI and I’m about to install HFI on mine soon hopefully! The system is on the shelf!
I am sure you can handle it!!
Another great, detailed video! You're a living encyclopedia of Scout info!
Nice job with the video Levi, that Scout sounds good!
Thank you. I think the owner will be happy with it!
Excellent video. Most helpful. Thank you.
Thanks for posting this content. I am working on installing a Hamilton kit on my pickup as well. Just curious, have you had recent communication with Bill? Been trying to reach him, with no luck.
I talked to him the other day. He had some health issues lately and is recovering. Shoot him an email.
@@OldIronOffroad Thanks for the heads up!
great work
I finished my daughter's install
and have 2 crankcase ports open
1 on the valve cover and the other on the valley pan
should I just put filters on them?
or am I missing a port connection?
Valley pan is for the PCV valve and full manifold vacuum. The valve cover is technically supposed to be plumbed to a spark arrestor not to be confused with pcv and then to the air cleaner.
Did you upgrade the fuel tank? We are needing a fuel tank but want to retain the skid plate. However, we are wondering if a new POLY tank will work with the fuel injection kit when a tank is not baffled?
For TBI injection I have never had an issue running an unbaffled tank.
How does this system compare to the Holley Sniper efi and carburetor?
Well to a carb there is no comparison as you are fully electronic fuel and timing controlled. No fiddling with chokes, not cold stalling, ect. As far as the Sniper goes I will first off say I have limited experience with the systems, but the experience I have had just wasn't for me. Sniper for the most part ( unless you choose to upgrade) is a fuel only system which is only half of what you are after in a fuel injection system. The 2 sniper systems I had my hands on ( not installed by me) one was a timing controlled system that had some weird quirks that I personally would not tolerate. The other was fuel only and was plagued with issues right out of the box which resulted in a new unit being installed and still had issues that needed sorting beyond the "self learning". There are lots of guys that love the Holley stuff, and I may get there at some point. Just not there yet.
Question on initial timing. You mentioned set the mechanical to zero. Is that true zero?
Yes. When you install the distributor make sure engine is top dead center number 8 on compression. Balancer at 0. Drop distributor in and I use a distributor cap with a hole drilled in it to align the rotor just past the center of a cap terminal and also just double check and make sure the magnetic pickup and reluctor are lined up. After you warm the engine up unhook the timing bypass wire and verify that timing is at 0 with a light. Should be pretty close if you follow these steps.
Too bad they stopped selling this system, only option available today is the Holley Sniper system.
You can still get a system from Bill. He is just several months out.
@@OldIronOffroad I have contacted them and they recommended Holley Sniper system as the Hamilton system is no available.
Did you hook pcv to stock intake manifold port or back of carb?
I use the stock port on the intake.
For a stock distrib w pertronix what do you set initial timing at? 6-8 btdc and is top end advance w vac around 28-30 at 2800-3000 rpm?
I usually start around 10 degrees on a scout and if it doesn't ping will try to pull more. Total advance around 35 degrees
So all these Hamilton systems have to have a laptop hooked up at and to set it up???
Sort of. To properly complete the initial setup you must set the minimum idle speed and then adjust the tps. I suppose if one were so inclined you could adjust the TPS using a voltmeter, but that would be senseless seeing as how you would need the laptop anyway if you wanted the ability to log data. I saw in another comment you linked Howell EFI. Their system is the same only they have poor customer service and their tunes are pretty far off out of the box. I have fixed several Howell systems with a proper tune from Hamilton.
Would you know if they make ot for the 4 cylinder?
Hamilton fuel injection does offer a system for the 4 cylinders also.
So I am curious how fuel mileage, drivability and power compare with the carburetor.
Cold start warm ups aren't a thing with fuel injection. No stumbling when it is cold. Fire it up. Give oil time to get flowing and take off. Power is about the same as a carb. You aren't going to really gain power with fuel injection (unless there is something wrong with your carb). Fuel economy is improved. I have gotten as much as 16 mpg after switching to fuel injection. 12 seems to be pretty average with carbs and scouts in general.
Torque is improved across the full rpm range!

There it is!
