Late viewer here, love the list. One of my favourites is Jiangnan, got it on kickstarter, great game , the only negative thing is that not all the content fits the box, leaving a considerable lift.

Agricola was my first and coming into it from mostly card games and the mass market roll and move games I was like "whoa, this is so much control over what I can do and it's great"
Oooh, yes it was one of my first games, and I remember thinking ooooh its great!
Architects was my first thought. The capture and release mechanism is a bit of 'take that' without it feeling too much.
Yes there are a few other games that like that too!
This is a good approach and nice alternative to the usual top 10.

My favorite mechanism for sure. The new Caylus, Lords of Waterdeep, Kingsburg etc. My favorite probably Empires: Age of Discovery with the upgradable workers.

Surprised there was no Keyflower
Hi Peter. Keyflower is a good example of how these mechanisms can be in the eye of the beholder. We thought of Keyflower as an auction with a twist, rather than worker placement with a twist.
