    Superb video. I've read the Illiad and it was all a jumble and confusion of events, names and battles for me. This is the first time I've heard it all laid out in a concise, ordered manner with pictorial supplementation to illustrate all the main events. Told in a no-nonsense, matter of fact manner. Absolutely brilliant. This will be my go-to source material for the T.W. in future. After seeing this, I'm even more convinced that the events in the Illiad are based upon the real-life events and people of the conflict of the Argives against Willusa in the late Bronze Age. Thank you!

      Yes, it is pretty clear the Iliad was based on real history (with some embellishment, of course). In reality, it probably wasn't a war between just Greeks and Trojans, but a regional war between numerous parties (as the Egyptians and other sources claim). There seemed to be chaos around this time because of the bronze age collapse. Many people were in conflict and the Trojan war just seems to be just a part of a wider conflict.

    A human sacrifice in the mycenaean times, heh?
    Now THAT is interesting. I wonder how often that happened, and why was abandoned in classical greek times.

    • @WanaxTV
      @WanaxTV  3 роки тому +3

      It is hard to tell whether or not the Mycenaeans actually practiced human sacrifice. In the well known version of the same myth, Iphigenia was replaced by a deer by goddess Artemis and so the human sacrifice was avoided. It could be a memory of a very distant case that might’ve happened in the Mycenaean times but it would’ve been an extreme case which was looked upon very negatively, definitely not a common practice.

      I see. I mean, perhaps it used to be done in eatly Mycenaean times. But, like you said, it was looked upon negatively. Agamemnon's wife was pissed off after hearing the news.

      Human sacrifice in Greece never happened , only in the literature, that thing made the barbarians not the greeks , the pelasgos (its a word that the greeks use for the people before the greeks) the only case of human sacrifice was in some archeological site of knossos , the minoans (or cretens) they are not ethical Greek , they are pelasgos , the micenian are real greeks

      I don't know if the 16th BC century mycenaeans would have this "barbarian" ideology back then. Later greeks did.
      Once again, I cannot say for sure they did practice human sacrifice, yet it was common across some indo-european cultures, like the celts and germans, even I think the romans at some point did it, long before they dropped that practice. I suspect the bronze age greeks did and they stopped for whatever reasons.

    When? I understand, that the ancient Greek was copied from Vinca script/Danube civilization which discovered metallurgy, copper, bronze, gold. From 8000 BC to around 3000 BC,so for over 5ooo years without any war. Recently a book in English written by Harald Haarmann, Danube civilization. He is world known paleo linguist and among other things, he studied The Vinca Civilization, architecture, metallurgy, ceramic, calendar........ There was some talks about Troy battle that was actually happening in the area of Skadar lake. Iliad story is also put in the Adriatic Sea. I'm not an expert, just interested in ancient history and its stories., so any comment/critic with arguments are most welcome.

    Great video and break down of the war, love all the details in things like this, Think they could make a great Troy film with all these main plots and twist's in the TEN Year war, be good to see actors all looking in the early 20's or 30's and at the end all looking like 10 15 years older by wear and tear and grieving over the ten year war, just think you could have up to 20 30 great actor and actress's playing the main roles of Trojan warriors, prince's Princess's and the King, also have great actor's and actress's playing the Achaean's Warriors Prince's King's and so on, and in the film have the 12 day funerals for the fallen so that be like 2 battles each month, and have some epic scene's with the gods appearing fighting the best warriors from each side , some gods saying who they are and some disguised as mortal warriors just like little but big epic scene's though out the battles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I know that a lot of the references for countries especially on the Trojan side are confusing and disputed, especially the Amazons, which you did not mention. But what confuses me the most in your version of events is the Phrygians being in Asia Minor already and being a Trojan ally.
    My take would be that they would either (1) be a misnomer for some other group occupying a similar location at earlier date, for example the Tauresoi (probably the same as the Teresh or Tyrsenoi) or (2) they were actually proto-Phrygians, Bryges (i.e. proto-Macedonians as well) and thus they were part of Trojan allies from Europe, along with the mentioned Paeonians and the misplaced Larissa (which IMO is Thessalian Larissa, then still a pre-Indoeuropean, Pelasgian, local power).
    Otherwise it'd mean that the Trojan War happened after the 1178 Sea Peoples' wave, and not as is generally accepted, culminating in the c. 1180 BCE destruction of Troy VIIa. This last is much more consistent with the Trojan War being the prelude of the (Greek-led) 1178 Sea Peoples' mass invasion of Anatolia and (better documented) of Ugarit and the Levant (until stopped by the Egyptians at the Battle of Djahy).
    Also the only credible part of the Odyssey is the "Cretan lie", when Ulysses tells his Cretan hosts he had been trapped in Egypt for seven years after an expedition, which should be the 1175 renewed Sea Peoples' (again Greek-led) attack via the sea. IMO this is a wink to those in the know by the otherwise extremely creative bard.
    So I'd think that "far off" Ascania (where the Phrygians are located) may refer to the recent, almost simultaneous arrival of the Bryges/Mushki (Phrygio-Macedonians) to the area of the Aegean in those very dates, later co-opted to the war against the Hittites (Sea Peoples' wave of c. 1178), as happened with other groups that are listed as allies of the Trojans (most clearly the Lycians/Lukka and the Pelasgians/Peleset, but also the Teresh, who may be the same as the Dardanians or in general proto-Etruscans from that region of Asia Minor and the Trojans or Teucrians themselves, Tjekker, for the later naval invasion attempt of Egypt).
    My take in any case is that first was the Trojan War and only then, as aftermath, the Greek-led Sea Peoples' invasions of Asia Minor, Cyprus and North Syria (and failed attempts against Egypt).

    This was well done,as all your work but i am not happy with you calling the Warriors of this time Soldiers. They were not soldiers, they were the ruling class of theyr society,an elite that devotet to a life of masters over slaves and peasents,by superior strenght and fighting spirit, with a brutal codex of honour . Also it seems to me,your following Homer to much.the Horse is a creation of the poet which satisfied the audience of its time while the thruth about troys downfall was simply Treason.somebody opened a sidedoor to the greeks, probably Ainas.this is mentioned in the nonhomeric sources like Diktys of crete.but the poet shows a great education in the myth and legends of the Oriental world.40 hereoes inside the horse correspon the 1000 jears older story of 40 Ägyptians who concered a city in Canaan, been smuggeld in inside great Pithoy.the saga was well known all around the Orient survived in the fairytale of Alibaba and the 40 bandits.it is possible that among the sponsors of our favorit poet aristokratic clans like the Ainiades in Äiolis were glad to hear this new version of the story because they saw Aineas as theyr ancestor.
