Ever wondered what it feels like to get hypnotized? Or what the necessary conditions are in order to get hypnotized? Albert Nerenberg is an acclaimed Canadian hypnotist, film director, and one of the top experts on laughter. He reveals the secret steps that it takes in order to hypnotize someone and what these instant hypnosis techniques might say about the human brain. - This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Timing is critical in instant inductions. Hypnosis is a wonderful tool to help people overcome non-conscious issues like anxiety, depression, addictions and phobias.
Yup, there's literally thousands of papers published on the efficacy and benefits of hypnosis. Yet, somehow most people are still completely in the dark about its therapeutic benefits. That is what is strange to me. And we've probably really only scratched the surface. Obviously you're most likely well acquainted with Milton and what he was capable of. However, if you get a chance look into what Bernheim was doin in the late 1800s in "Suggestive Therapeutics" by H. Bernheim. Amazing stuff.

Why are so many people making assumptions that hypnosis is fake?I, myself have been hypnotized before. You can't just assume stuff about something without knowing anything about it!
You cannot assume it is not fake though either.
Or without actually trying it.

We are hypnotized all the time. A good example is when for example you are on a long drive home and you get close to home or even will pull your car in your driveway and then you didn't remember driving home. If you have done that in one degree or the other means you have and can been hypnotized.

It's funny how so many people think hypnosis is fake... There's so much evidence that it's a real thing. I'm not talking about any claims of hypnotism, only that it can & does occur.
Its real but only when it comes to relaxing like meditating. Everything else that involves controlling people on stage is fake. Its kind of like chiropractors, it works for relieving pain but lots of chiropractors will also claim it cures physical diseases which is pseudoscience.
I find slightly funny that TED flagged this talk that's showing a physiological phenomenon for lacking "legitimate scientific support", while the guest stated clearly that researchers are working at it though still can't explain it clearly. I don't get the ethical argument here: virtually the whole scientific research lacks explanation until it's finished, but luckily that doesn't make scholars shy away from presenting their thesis. Being in the process of studying something new it's not a shame.

@@hexplosion8205 No, you're correct hypnosis has been an official medical modality since the 1950's and since then there's been literally thousands of papers supporting the efficacy and benefits of hypnosis (it has even been used to do surgeries without anesthesia). (And... if you were to read in these papers about what is possible with it, you'd think it's absolutely crazy that it's real therapeutic use is still in the dark). But before that, it's been around for thousands of years starting in the Egyptian sleep temples, all the way to mesmer (think of the word "mesmerize") with animal magnetism. But aside from aaallllllll that, trance is something that we experience every day.
When you're driving your car and you forget most of the trip --trance. When fall into a deep daydream where you can visualize --trance. When you go into the REM state --trance. Hypnosis is when somebody guides (voluntarily) you in to a waking REM state. Within this state, according to Stanford Hypnosis Lab, the "default mode network" (the monkey mind/habit mind) quiets down and the mind falls into a state of increased neuroplasticity (increased potential for learning quickly) and increased suggestibility. If you don't like the suggestions, you simply pop back to "waking state." Although, you're not really asleep, you're just in a state of trance (a relaxed state of increased focus).
And yeah @Andrea_Manconi it's hilarious. They just want to control the narrative. Hypnosis, as it is a normal thing that's everywhere. For more on that you can read, "Monsters and Magical Sticks: There's no such thing as hypnosis?" By Steven Heller. Hypnosis is a silly word that refers different states of human consciousness.
Therapy is where you go when you want to "try" to feel better. And then keep coming back only to try harder the next time. Hypnosis and similar modalities, is where you go if you want real change in your life and actually get results. When you experience real change, and don't need to go back to a therapist ---no more money for drugs or therapist. Not good for big pharm or mainstream medical.
The ad it starts with is just so amazingly irrtating.
Its funny how the hypnotist SPECIFY **only beautiful and smart people get hypnotized** and there handpick select the people he considered bautiful and ignore the rest of them 😂😂😂😂 the faces of the secluded ones were priceless
It was intentional to assist with the trick. You pick people who would likely be considered attractive. Remind them they are attractive and that being attractive and smart makes them more susceptible to be hypnotized. They will then play along with being hypnotized even if they are not. so as top be seen as both smart and attractive it is a manipulation of ones vanity.

Hypnotherapy is very helpful in many mental conditions. Addiction, phobia, trauma etc

I believe people got hypnotized in mass all the time! look at northkorea. or hitlertimes. And what we encounter hyp in supposedly minor drastic ways. Advertisement, propaganda...Ok, western world SEEMS to be less manipulated.
From what I learned from a friend who studies psychology, hypnosis is based on trust. To be hypnotized it needs to be voluntary.
I think the speaker said it well. Hypnotizing someone against their will is difficult. But understand that you can easily hypnotize people when they don't know you're hypnotizing them. Just like you noticed in the Spidey video. And you don't even have to be as overt as he was with the snapping fingers and such. Darren Brown has demonstrated some far more subtle ways of going about it. But shockingly, advertisers, marketers, politicians, cults, religions, sales people etc etc. have all used more subtle and sneaky ways of trancing people out to buy into whatever they were selling.
I mean, go watch a video on all the manipulative techniques used on you at a grocery store. Or notice how McDonald's easily saturates you with ads all the time. With the latter, you might be thinking that you've watched a number of McD's commercials and you didn't immediately go to the restaurant. But that's not what they were trying to do. They wanted it to be planted into your mind so that when you're thinking more emotionally, it instantly pops into your brain again. Like when you realize you're late for work, no time for breakfast, 'Oh man, I'm so hungry but no time to cook anything! I'll have to just grab an egg mcmuffin at the drivethru..' And it works often enough that even though no one loves the taste or quality of McD's we've all been there. More than once. It's made them super successful.
So ya, hypnotizing someone to do something against their will is tougher, but for the most part, realize that most people don't have their will activated to resist in the first place..

@@Tanrer Right. Thought he was being sarcastic. Of course, we've all been hypnotized to work hard, get more money, get new stuff, blah, blah, blah. Not everyone in the world thinks like this. ;-)
So it seems that if you can keep yourself in a state of hi anxiety or anger, then you won't be able to be hypnotized.
He is just busy promoting his business and cheating people in the name of hypnosis....u can watch his other shows.....all scripted......he is just saying....if u are not buying my product...either u are in depression or have mental instability

No he just showed one phenomenon only , in hypnosis Switzerland is another concept and Iraq is another one...both are powerfull....in state of anger and rage You are more susceptible towards getting hypnotized bcoz of reduced Rationality and more open towards rage emotions.
It is really amazing to see that such a Hocus Pocus can happen on a reputed platform like Ted. . And if this was really true then all people who are suffering from INSOMNIA or ANXIETY or DEPRESSION would love to rush to a Hypnotist and go in to a peaceful sleep which for them is a big luxury
l actually do go too a therapist who does hypnosis and too be honest l wonder if l feel more calmer , because l am an over thinker too . But it does certainly help my Anxiety . so yes l think it really does help .

Im very interested in hypnose, but I don’t believe anybody can bring someone in deep ‘sleep’ in seconds! People are not cars that can gear up to full speed in seconds. I challenge every hypnotist to try that with me🤷🏻♀️ Im highly intuitive and also very skeptical.

You would not be a good subject. Not everyone can respond like the folks in this video. Notice he chose only a few for the demonstration. He had everyone focus on a window in order to evaluate his best choices. The best way to believe is to try these techniques on others.
Is this what is used in churches today? Mass hypnosis. No wonder some but not all the people are "slain in the spirit".

This is a cool lecture, though I can confidently say that hypnosis thing with the finger snapping wouldn't have worked on me, if I were the officer. I would have been momentarily distracted or intrigued by the oddness of this individual's behavior, but I don't think it would've made me forget what my job was and why I had pulled him over in the first place. It would have momentarily derailed me but I would've quickly gotten back to the point. Perhaps some people are more susceptible to it than others.
That's exactly it. In the full video the hypnotist shows that he received hundreds of dollars of tickets for the many times it failed.

The point of this talk was show a side of hypnosis that the general public is unfamiliar with - rapid and shock inductions. And that surprise itself can hypnotize people.

Hypnosis is real, and its not as easy as u think... it just take some time, dedication and patience to learn... its like literally every profession, if someone doesn’t know how to make a computer virus that could potentially destroy every system in the whole world, doesn’t mean its not real and impossible to be created, same goes for hypnosis, not all know how to do it but it doesn’t mean its fake... its literally been used over centuries for therapeutic, and some of them even use it for bad things, like robbing someone without them noticing (happened to my grandma)
That said, if you learn how to do it, and is confident enough, its like riding a bicycle, you just know how to do it
Believe it or not your already hypnotized. Here is a good way to see outside of the matrix. Look up the narcissistic abuse cycle. It will literally change the way you see human interaction. Look up social schemas. If you can look outside of the common social schema then you will see just how hypnotized we humans are by mass media.

All hypnotism is Theory... The subconscious mind is theory. The universal mind is Theory. Auto suggestion is Theory... In Theory all of what I just mentioned is connected. All these Theories have been experimented with and written about in books since before Mesmer. Believe in it or don't, the stage hypnotist and his or her job is to entertain the audience. Not to prove that hypnotism is real or not.
So love is theory as well....

Sometimes they in fact do, I've seen it multiple times. But the thing is it craves concentration some children just haven't got.
Children are the easiest people to hypnotize. Not dragging them up on stage is unrelated to being a good or bad actor.

children are in a state of hypnosis for significant periods. Children learn faster than adults and can absorb so much. Why? Because they are in a theta mind state that is open to suggestion and learning.
Why does Mr Nerenberg choose two of the people on the stage and not the others? The others are not under any hypnosis. I magine he's interviewed them all before the demonstration to find out which ones were susceptible and which ones were not. Or he's been able to judge by looking at them all: hypnotists are good at seeing that kind of thing.
The stage hypnotist can easily see who is more hypnotzable than others by observing visual cues. He or she will usually send the non participants back to the audience.
There are a few reasons - not everybody can be hypnotized.
@@hypnotherapy4change250 I agree. The image of the wonderful hypnotist who can put anyone "under" by a simple snap of the fingers is mostly a fabrication. But that's showbiz, like any magic trick.
It’s him reading their body language and how open to suggestions they are. The whole thing about being being open to hypnotic suggestion being “beautiful, intelligent, athletic” etc. He was watching their responses, like the girl’s hair flip on “beautiful”. Said another way, he’s saying, “If you’re open to hypnosis, I’m going to suggest ‘beautiful’ and you tell me if you are ready to take that suggestion”. So, he suggested it, girl felt beautiful, so she flipped her hair. Now he knows who to target. Same thing for the guy and athletic. When he came to the guy later, his eyes were already droopy because he heard the “sleep” command given to others, so he knew he was ready. Girl in the middle did not take the “sleep” suggestion right away, so he did another “interrupter” with her hands, and bilateral stimulation, gave the sleep suggestion again and it worked.
@@samezidrovibes Yes, I’ve heard about 1 out of 5. Another 1 out of 5 are more highly suggest-able. Everyone else is somewhat in between.

Believing is for the things you can not prove. Hence why they are beliefs and not facts. I'm open to information that could teach me new things so if you have any sources I'd gladly take a look. If hypnotism were real, then less than scrupulous people could probably Professor X people to take advantage of them, become rich, take over the world, etc.

According to my proposed law the hypnotist should be symbolically charged with a felony for an illegal use of any form of undocumented hypnosis, including but not limited to for a personal benefit. The officer should also be charged for not doing his job with a caveat that he claimed to be under hypnosis and there was video evidence that he was under hypnosis. If the hypnotist is a good person, to protect the public, he would volunteer to be convicted of a felony for a criminal misuse of hypnosis.

Okay, no.
First of all, that spidey kid is not only breaking traffic laws (whether or not he personally deemed it safe doesn't matter, he still broke the law) but he is also totally unethical. And also, like added a couple more legal violations: videorecording an officer of the law without permission, and later broadcasting that recording publicly, manipulating (so he claims) a stranger's awareness without consent, thereby interfering with their job performance, which happens to be an obstruction of justice that caused him to aid and abet in carrying out a legal violation.
I call BS. Just showing the video like this would be the end of whatever credibility the guy tried to claim and I'd love to see him get pulled over again.

I installed a carcam in my car. It has 2 cameras, one that records in front of me and the other records me and my driver side window to show that I am not distracted. If a cop pulls me over, I don’t need their consent for my camera that is always recording.
Really? I don't know what the law is in that country because I don't live there and don't give 2 shits to look it up. But in the US, there is no expectation of privacy when you are in public. The Supreme Court has also ruled that there is no violation of law when recording someone in public, especially police. And no, you DO NOT need their permission to do so or to later publish it anywhere via any medium. Including putting it on the internet. So your post is laughable at best. Whether the guy has ethics or morals is moot. That has nothing to do with the fact that he proved his point and that the power of suggestion is so powerful that it is possible to influence someone's behavior "against their will". But the simple fact that it worked is also proof that the officer was "willing" to be hypnotized in the first place. As far as obstruction of justice goes, he did not stop the officer from giving him a ticket. The officer mearly didn't do it. He also did not stop the officer from pulling him over again. The ironic part is that by virtue of the fact that you even THOUGHT it was obstruction of justice means that YOU believe he actually had the power to stop the officer from giving him the ticket. Thereby PROVING that hypnosis actually works. Your post was absolutely PERFECT for doing that. And hilarious 🤣 ....

Because hypnosis isn’t a lie, there’s scientific evidence from places like Cambridge university and many trusted websites. I did an essay on hypnosis last year, and I got my definition of hypnosis from the Cambridge dictionary. I could’ve went to the Oxford dictionary and got roughly the same results
So what I see here is because people can’t just do their research, and are closed minded. They call everything they don’t believe ‘fake’ and ‘deception.’

Hypnotism is a dangerous form of mind control. I would never allow my self to be anywhere near one of these charlatans.
