- Ron Casey is most well known for his on-air TV punch up with Normie Rowe. In 1979 he was involved in a heated verbal exchange with Frank Hyde on the World of Sport show. Casey was a noted critic of referees whereas Hyde was a supporter and defender of officialdom. This was sparked up by Hyde's newspaper article during the week where Casey took offence too.

Back in the 1970s/80s fans and journos gave refs a hard time and a weekly inquisition. It was lopsided criticism because the referees couldnt respond to the likes of Wong Casey who stood behind the protection of Packer media empire and berated the umpires ( who were not highly paid). Its easy to ridicule a Ref but remember its a difficult job performed under pressure and decisions need to be made with lightening speed. But Ron wouldnt know that as he never played league nor refereed . He was a loud mouth know -all and an arm chair ref.
