The Beatles - Revolution

- The Beatles performing “Revolution.”
“When you talk about destruction, don’t you know that you can count me out"
“I did the slow version and I wanted it out as a single: as a statement of The Beatles’ position on Vietnam and The Beatles’ position on revolution. For years, on The Beatles’ tours, Brian Epstein had stopped us from saying anything about Vietnam or the war.” - John Lennon.
“Plugging directly into the Abbey Road desk and pushing the needles into the red achieved the fuzz-guitar sound. According to George Martin “We got into distortion on that, which we had a lot of complaints from the technical people about. But that was the idea: it was John’s song and the idea was to push it right to the limit. Well, we went to the limit and beyond.”
“Revolution" was directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg, and filmed on the 4th September 1968 at Twickenham Film Studios.
“Don’t you know it’s gonna be all right”

Lennon’s opening guitar riff into McCartneys scream is perfect
I was just thinking about that riff and it dawned on me that I think I've heard a similar riff or effect in the music of Chuck Berry. And now I'm wondering if I can figure out what Chuck Berry song we would be talking about.
I just went and did a quick listen to the openings of "Johnny B. Goode" and "Roll Over Beethoven" - there isn't as much distortion on Berry's guitar - but the opening chords on those songs are still a very similar call to attention. I suspect John is lifting a chord from a Chuck Berry song and then distorting the hell out of it to create an even more powerful effect.
Daniel Bartholomew berry was Lennon’s idol so I could see that
@@user-em4wh5ji3w - I found something about Chuck Berry's style of playing employing single notes with double stops - and I'm not exactly sure if that is what Lennon is doing at the beginning of Revolution - but it has to be at least something similar:
ua-cam.com/video/7WAS-pJaoWA/v-deo.html
Daniel Bartholomew cool find! Thanks for sharing. The influence from Berry is very clear on Lennon!
George - “John’s mic is sh*t,” then he half smiles - cracks me up every time.

@AbeFroman-zx5hs their music is not a technical competition. Ringo and Keith Moon were friends in the first place, it's very unlikely that Keith Moon didn't admire Ringo and still was friends with him. Ringo created musical arrangements that no other drummer would have imagined, doesn't matter if it's a virtuoso or not

That intro from Lennon and the scream from Paul is so beautifully done!
That opening riff is just mind blowing
@thegaminglord5809wheres the original?
@@xeyDB10Not sure. Really just a generic rock opener.
@thegaminglord5809So what's your point?
Do unto others. Pee wee Crayton 1956
@@gza1976able It takes some deep knowledge to come up with that. Lennon's opening riff is almost identical to that of Pee Wee Crayton. At the same time, I expect that Lennon also knew it. The Beatles revolutionized Pop/Rock Music.
And they could not have done it without you mate. We miss you..
My personal view is that George was somewhat limited with the songwriting. Probably by Paul & John. Then, in 1970, he releases a triple studio album, "All Things Must Pass". When's the last time an artist released a triple studio album? George obviously had many songs written while with The Beatles...

What makes this the ultimate protest song is when John Lennon sings “When you talk about destruction, don’t you know that you can count me out" he immediately off mic also says "IN". 0:34 Most people miss that one word. I've always wondered about that. Never seen an explanation. All I can think of ... John was in for part of the "revolution," but out for other parts.
John says “IN” because he hadn’t made up his mind about joining anything destructive. He doesn’t say it in the final version because he made up his mind, “Don’t you know that you can count me out “.

What
Who thinks that the first few seconds, Lennons screaming guitar solo is very satisfying?
Jack Myhre Proto Metal. The Beatles were well aware of the upward rise of Led Zepplin and Black Sabbath, so they tried their hand at a heavy sound with an old song released as an acoustic track on the White Album.
The electric version of "Revolution" was recorded just over one month after the acoustic version. The electric version was John's attempt at challenging Paul's "Lady Madonna" as the band's next A side more than anything.
Jack Myhre I especially like the part where George's guitar has a keyboard-like synth sound
Jack Myhre That tone is shit man. Tf are you talking about?
jamie you're quite correct. found out later on the 'heavy' sound was as far back as 65. George's pal Clapton had that nailed first with Cream.
Now there is only Ringo, and Paul. Please everyone remember John, and George. Every December 8, I still cry for John. And George I think about him also. They were the Fab Four. I am 70 years old.. Beatles Girl forever.
Imagine hearing any Beatles song the first time it hit the airwaves, all these years later and I still can't describe it
I’m old enough to say I heard it for the first time it played. I was amazed. Hey Jude too. I could even remember the words to Hey Jude the next day. That’s goood music!!!
Yeah. I was twelve years old when this song (on a double-A-side single with "Hey Jude") was released. The Beatles changed their style so frequently and so drastically from 1964 through1970 that every record that was released almost sounded like a new band. Amazing.
Wow! Even now all these years later it still moves me.
It would probaly be the same as when you heard any of them for the first time at any time

That’s why I love the Beatles so much, they didn’t give a f, they created their own image.
The day after this George recorded While My Guitar Gently Weeps
+Jannik Lindquist yup and Eric played the same guitar as George has in this video
+Henry Murray If only he'd played it as well as George. Or better yet, not played on "While My Guitar..." at all.
whys that?
+Henry Murray Oh I'm sorry, I'm guessing you like his playing (Clapton) - I'm just being grouchy 'cos I really dislike it. Even in Cream, I love Baker's drums, Bruce's bass, vocals and songwriting but the guitar playing (and guitar arrangements) bore me senseless. But more than being bored, I actively dislike virtually every musical choice he makes. I'm particularly grouchy about "While My Guitar..." because firstly, I think it's the worst guitar solo on any Beatles track ever and secondly, after that time, it seemed that Harrison became very influenced by Clapton's high widdle-diddle 'bluesy' soloing. As you can imagine, this is a VERY minority view ;) but there it is.

This is nearing the end of 1968 and getting near to the end of the Beatles. George Harrison is still only 25 years old. Goes to show you how young they were and how they did so very much of making great music in such a short amount of time.

I was 10 and obsessed!
Thank you for the context. Had to be 4 or so months prior to the Let It Be sessions. Aside from the references to past music, you don't really get a sense of how rapidly they were pumping out these tunes. I see the year of releases from album discography info, and the rate of their releases is just shocking.
@@yacobz totally agree. What I've really appreciated about their music...is that rarely does any song sound like an earlier one. Fresh sound every time.
George was 26 years old by 1969 and he made Something, Taxman, Here comes the sun and While my gently weeps. Amazing musician.
This is truly one of the greatest rock songs ever. Supreme guitar solo, supreme keyboard solo, supreme vocals, bass and drums. It rocks and it rolls and moves the soul. DP forever!

There will never be another group as great as The Beatles
Never. What a combo.
@@rachelgarcia4301 Just a fact for you. Elvis Presley and the Beatles will never be touch in anyway by any singer or band by sales = FACT !!! It's in the record books !! Elvis was solo.
Correct!!!!!
@@richardalexander4300 Elvis is the best-seller as a solo artist. If we're talking about both solo and groups, the Beatles are the best-selling artists in music history.
Their music maturity in only 6 years was astounding. Their fans grew with them. As the Beatles changed the fans grew older and changed.
