  • There are many varieties of wild figs in India and their size can vary from as small as a chickpea to being as large as a dinner plate. Most of them are edible and wild figs have been used as food for ages. Unripe goolar is astringent in quality and helps in healing the gut lining. It is rich in fiber and helps the gut microbiome grow. It is good for the stomach in many different ways. We discussed Goolar more with nutritionist Sangeeta Khanna.

    We have in abundance in western part of Meghalaya. The tender leaves of young plants of such variety having small fruits are used as herbs and green colouring agent in curries.
    Thank you for this awareness.

    Goolar is not commonly available in vegetable markets. However Most people don’t know about it. In my family my mother makes raw goolar ki sabzi in mustard oil. It is yummy and we wait for the season to find goolar👌

    You have already sprayed all flowers and fruits with pesticides. Wild fig is one of the last few remaining edible food that is solely available to the wild creatures. If you start eating these also, what will the insects and flies eat now? I remember some 25 years back when mango trees where covered with parrots who feasted on it. Today, people are plucking them with bamboo sticks to make pickles. Now suddenly the parrots too have disappeared. 😢

    In Manipur, we eat the green fruit with salt and chilly by mashing slightly and ripe ones are also eaten. Leaves can be eaten also and some types of fig's leaves are also used to cover the fermented soyabean.

    When I was a child there was a goolar tree on street next to my home. I will climb the tree and pick the sweet ones to eat and throw away not so good ones. When I came to America I came to know that it is called fig and is an expensive produce to buy 😂 we don't value things when we get them free.

    The problem with the fig tree fruit becoming commonplace alternative nutrition in indian society is our inability to reach and harvest the ripe figs. Only unripe figs can be easily harvested. Also what are the harvest months in the year?

    📌Famous Poem in Telugu:
    మేడి పండు చూడ మేలిమై యుండు
    పొట్ట విప్పి చూడ పురుగులుండు
    పిఱికివాని మదిని బింకమీలాగురా
    విశ్వదాభిరామ వినురవేమ.
    Meaning (అర్థము::
