  • To know more on Krack-a-Dawna, visit: / kracadawnafarm
In the year 1985, long before organic farming crept into the mainstream vocabulary, Long before sustainable living became a fashion, the young couple, Julie and Vivek decided to tap out of their city life, pack their bags and leave for Heggadadevankote, a remote village 50km from Mysuru. They wanted to create their own little world.
This is how Krack- a- Dawna was born.
Today, after 37 years and countless losses and adventures, they have a farm that is spread over an area of 35 acres. They produce almost everything they need for their daily life - Paddy, millets, oilseeds, eggs, spices, sugarcane, and vegetables just to name a few. Juli and Vivek have two sons, a daughter, and a daughter-in-law. They also have three dogs, two cats,15 cattle, 20 goats, over 60 chickens and a cacophony of wild birds for company. Julie and Vivek didn't just want to create a farm, they wanted to create a free-thinking community. They involved the local community on the farm and homeschooled their children and were the first to start a farmers’ market in Mysore.
Today Vivek and Julie are involved in helping mitigate rural problems through activism and policy. The couple is trying to help the community farm responsibly and has opened the farm to students who are eager to learn. Vivek and Julie can only smile when they look back and reminisce about the wonderful adventure they embarked upon.

When she said "There was a breakdown in society. We decided if we didn't leave Delhi at that point, we probably would get sucked into the system", that resonated so much with me! We are experiencing the same in the USA (and probably all over the world). Society is breaking down, and many of us are stuck on this hamster wheel of working in meaningless jobs, losing touch with our natural world, contributing little good to the future. I hope one day I can be as brave as them.

I just left my psu job 2 years back and puchased a small 2 acre agricultural plot near my hone. I am doing a little work in pollutry and fishery. Though the income is less, but i am kind of happy now. There are lots of chores in a farm, i enjoy doing them. I have planted some 22 fruit plants, i enjoy watching them grow, i enjoy feeding my fishes in the pond and watching them fishes by standing still. I enjoy feeding my roosters and four goats and watching them run and jump bonkers in fun. I enjoy the company of my three featherbrained dogs who always create new tasks for me by chewing pipes, running among the vegetable beds. I enjoy watching my chickengrow in the sheds, and take care that they do not face any problem and stress.
Though sometimes financial matters come to my mind and i think about my 2 year old baby(may be he will blame me for not getting him a new bike or something else because of financial restrictions), as my income has been kind of halved but still i will always prefer this life over my past life.

It is the other way round. Humans are dependent. 🙂
We are dependent on dogs and cats who guards and protect us from dangers. Cows and chickens grow by itself in a place like this. Feeding is not necessary. And makes the soil fertile day by day. We just have to live around these creatures in a Nature surrounded place.

See, he is a coorgi/kodava. They have been cultivating forested lands for coffee, pepper etc for centuries. They are extremely brave and hard working people who have lived their lives in nature for generations. You might think he one fine day left the city and started farming but no, it's in their very genes. Do not try to emulate them without first understanding what this life is all about. It all looks sexy from the outside but the reality is very daunting and exhausting. I know because my parents still farm on a pretty large agriculture land and i know how hard it is and how unforgiving it is. It is best to first experience this life for a year maybe by leasing out a farmland or something.

I think this video is incredibly inspiring and thanks to DTE for sharing these. However, I do have several questions after watching the video. How do city dwellers who seemingly have no connection to a land, get access to such huge acres (the land as mentioned belonged to tribals back then- how was this land with ancient ownership made available to people from Delhi)? Who are the farm hands here- local people or the erstwhile tribal people? How do the couple (or family) ensure that generational poverty or inequality get addressed through their moving there? Or do they just bring their inequalities from cities to villages or indigenous lands?

Most times when I watch such videos I ask myself wtf are you doing and wasting such precious time left. Saalaa how to get unstuck from this crazy routine and enjoy such a life. Yes it took them 37 years but today you guys looked so happy and content. Sending lots of love and best wishes from sunny Dubai

This is something incredible, I always love to learn how to create such environment in a place like Delhi so polluted with city life, this video is an eye opener, they have given back so much to the nature, to the people to the community, hats off to these human beings , I really got tears of joy watching this, I can feel, I would love to visit this place

Started with "Social upheaval in Delhi", some key words used like "activism", kid's name is "azad", then they had funding to buy huge piece of land, specifically in a "tribal area" and were able to sustain their urban expensive lifestyle throughout. They also "taught" the tribal kids.
So urban naxals settling in "tribal area" + missionary trick conversion sponsorship in some way?

We've met these folk personally and we live in this region of Karnataka, I won't add anything incendiary to your comment except, you've 100% absolutely picked up on the vibes. And you are right
And re: 'teaching' tribal kids, they've not had success with that
Also, they have this creepy hatred of everything Hindu/affiliated with the native culture of India. Weirdos
