That 's Dick Witts introducing the band. His band 'The Passage' (or just 'Passage') did some interesting stuff - particularly for me the first two eps 'New Love Songs' and 'About Time' which included Tony Friel original bassist with The Fall.
LOVE this. It's a bummer that post-punk morphed so fast back then into more pop sounds. I guess bands were trying to keep up to pay the bills. Would love to have had more of this approach stick around longer from more bands.
Although I don’t think they’ve ever mentioned the Teardrops/Cope as an influence, I’m pretty sure they must have influenced Blur. Also I just get amused by the amount of songs about Balfe or written to wind up Balfe: Country House, Pressure on Julian, maybe even Coping
Agreed. Wilder was a great album. And even the varied ‘everybody wants shag’ and especially Cope’s first 2 albums WSYM and Fried which are outstanding. But maybe brave Teardrops record is Wilder
I always watched 'What's on' saw some great bands on there! Dick Witts, used to wear a T shirt with 'But Is It ART' on the front! Who are the other two guests on the sofa? dx
The lyrics are like absurd and random and yet it works. I like cute details like the green car always moves around, the red one's always stationary... when I take photos of the green car, they almost always come up blurred ahaha (the kids might not know back in the day this happened) Julian changing lyrics too: "and they b***h about my white house" was not on the original...
Interesting to see a drummer up front for a change. Not that I know anything about drumming but especially at 2:11 it sounds like he has to put so much effort on understanding what’s going on behind him that he can’t even afford a look at the camera and risk messing everything up. Though it could be only shyness. I don’t know. Presenter looks like Jason Bateman.
That's fantastic. And great quality too. I remember Magazine doing Feed The Enemy on it (or Celebration) one followed the other but I forget the order. There must be some sensational stuff in the Granada TV archive when you take into account the bands on Granada Reports, So It Goes, Celebration and What's On. And that's before you get to specially made shows in the 80s or work back to stuff in the 60s (their early Beatles material is unparalleled).
Three years later........ there's a programme on Sky Arts on Fridays at 9pm called "Guy Garvey from the Vault" and it's dipping into the archive of Granada, Tyne Tees TV etc from the 70s and 80s. I think that clip was on it amongst many other previously unseen footage.
@@dumfriesspearhead7398 Ooh. Frustrating. We've not had a working aerial for several years, so I'm not able to get Sky Arts. Which also meant missing The Distractions on Runaround, which was repeated on Yesterday. :( Should both turn up here eventually. :)
Oh shit, missed a Wire gig with TE supporting. I once saw the Banshees supported by the Cure, but couldn't get to the Joy Division/Buzzcocks gig the net week. Guess what, Joy Division were no more, and Buzzcocks split up, soon after. The other bands went on for fucking YEARS! Anyway, great gig.
Fascinatingly, I can hear a lot of a Talking Heads influence in this, which is interesting (to me) because Cope hardly mentions them in his autobiographies. ;-)
and Wire. I think the neurotic, angular funk they both played was very much in the air at the time, and it’s likely that the Teardrops and Talking Heads just had similar influences.
Sleeping Gas was the B-side to this single/ EP on Zoo Records, along with ' Kirkby Workers Dreamfade'' - about some people in Liverpool being sacked; dockers maybe, I can't remember. I still have it on vinyl from when it came out, I'll try and see if can post the other track on here; I can't do it from an I-phone as it doesn't have a turntable; I have a turntable but do not and will never own a 'Me-Phone' Must be some way to do it, have a LOAD OF OTHER STUFF ON VINYL FROM THOSE DAYS THAT'S NOT ON HERE, sorry caps lock, not ranting.
@@richardroyle9123 Sleeping Gas was the a-side.The presenter even introduces this as 'the b-side of their single'. 'Kirby Workers Dream Fades' was an instrumental.
Well, Robert Mitchum deserves a song about him. You know that part in RYAN'S DAUGHTER where he loses his wife? Man, I've never seen a more dignified man in my life. Mitchum deserves entire albums written about. @kali mali
That is exactly what I thought - I assume you mean in the look Julian Cope has here? When I saw the still before playing the clip I thought someone had used the wrong shot - I really wouldn't have recognised him as Julian Cope.
Supporting Wire at Eric's... now that's a gig I would have loved to gone to.
And then onto ‘Upstairs at Eric’s’.
He doesn't get a mention in the intro, but pretty sure that's Paul Simpson on keys. Went on to form The Wild Swans.
Correct! :)
Am reading his autobiography book now
That's his riff and brown leather jacket. Shocking he doesn't get a mention. Reading his book now
The eighties have just begun.
Gary Dwyer looked really good with hair - strange not seeing him with a shaved head!

Wow, 1979! Had this ep in the same piano sleeve and i probably looked a similar, puppy faced youth to Copey!
Hypnotic. And Julian as gorgeous as ever
WOW! WOW! WOW! SO EARLY! How I LOVE The Teardrop Explodes, this is STUNNING! Thank you xoxoxo

Sounds like a lot of you band coming out of Chicago and NYC right now :)
Incredible to see such an old performance.
Absolutely fantastic
Yes... being a 30 + year fan... I was amazing to get this groove.
Never heard this one before, but doesn't it sound like it could be the blueprint for every blur album track for their first four albums?
Totally.
I can hear that. Good point.
Also, this has a bit of Gang Of Four in it...

Great song. Awesome post!
Ta!
Teardrop Explodes and Wire? Yes please, thank you.
Can you imagine? What great times......
Indeed! Wire footage, please!
*Good Lord but this has a good beat.*
Great stuff!
This is the best footage I’ve seen of The Teardrop Explodes and live on TV as well! Please post more from the Granada archives.

The Drood and Harry Enfield on drums too....woo

Young Paul Simpson on Keyboards!
The Wild Swans. I saw them in Leicester supporting Echo and the Bunnymen, i think.

Wow, from 1979 but this doesn’t seem dated at all.
I’m appreciating how the drummer is up front and ultra quirky. 🤷🏻♂️😅🥁
fascinating to watch
Great line up. That guitarist looks like he could've been in some Nuggets documented 60s US punk group.
This is so f....in' great!

They guys, the Bunnymen, and Joy Division, best bands ever.
And The Sound, The Chameleons!
Fantastic!
Dick Witts is a genius. Love The Passage.

The drummer in the foreground…cool. But he looks quite preoccupied
Probably disconcerting as the drummer would usually somewhat watch the band and ‘queues’

I think bands like The Mothers O f Invention and Captain Beefheart would love The Teardrop Explodes.
