5000 quid was worth a lot more back then than it is now. 78500$ in 2001 is now worth 131325$. So this video is a bit misleading since inflation hasn't been taken into consideration.
It's too late now since everyone knows about these cars and so now everyone wants one (thank UA-cam for that). If you want somewhat decent deals you have to look at cars that aren't cool right now but are still good to drive. Things like mid-2000's BMWs as an example. I bet Saab 9-5's are going to increase in price in the future as well due to how odd that car is. The 2010 generation MazdaSpeed 3 I guess is also going to go up in price if it hasn't already due to it being one of the last analogue hot hatches without a bunch of diffs and electronic gizmos in there.

The chip shortage really affected these prices these days. Although I also think that car tuning has become a trend which made so many new generation car enthusiasts. This is not a bad thing but it certainly has bumped up the price.
And a lot of new vehicles can really be tuned or modded like those older cars did. Too much computers and stuff now. Will be even worse wjth electric vehicles :/
It's a bad realization that I knew without a doubt that the R34 was $80k. Means that I've been eyeing them for 20 years now and I watched them slowly become more attainable; eventually saw them dip to low $40k's to high $30k's in Japan and was at a point in my life where I could afford one and store it for a couple of years until the 25 year thing, but made a grown up decision to put it off a couple of years and then this happened. I bought a 2005 S2k in late 2009 for $13,000. I must have had under 60k mi on it. That's the one car I wish I still had. Damn that was fun. Depreciation will come back one day folks!

AAAhhh the time when we could actually afford cool cars. My first Audi was an Audi 80 Quattro (sedan) with 2.3L 20V I5 engine from an Audi 90 and brakes from C4 S4. Absolute bargain at just $2200. But even before it.. Got a G60 Corrado for just $1200, a W2 MR2 2.0i turbo GT for $3000. Cars were accessible to anyone with a job. Now even shitboxes cost a fortune, let alone cool cars which people might wanna actually drive.
I already commented this but, as an 18 year old it feels bad watching this video everything was so cheap before and I got the expensive end of it. Paying 9k for my GTI almost seems like too much after watching this video when before I thought It was a steal.
Oof. To be in the financial position I'm in now, 20 years ago........I'd have had alot more "cool" cars. Thanks for the trip down memory lane Donut crew!
I remember being 16 in highschool and buying my first car, 1994 Catfish Camaro Iroc Blue paint. All of those cars that were mentioned are ones i wanted bad, but i was to broke for any of them. Finally turned 19 and bought my Mitsubishi 3000gt for like 3000 dollars. I knew all the cars were gunna be worth alot soon, i just didnt have enough money back then, or the knowledge to work on them. Once the 3000gt broke and i couldnt pay to get it fixed, i sold it and started to learn to work on cars. Now that i know how to work on them, I cant afford any of the cars anymore because theyre all going for 15 to 30 k
I sold my 85 Toyota pickup, 5 speed, with American Racing mags, for $500. Kill me. Sold my 94 Silvia for $1500. Kill me. Sold my 72 Cutlass Supreme for $1000. Kill me. Can't believe what they'd be worth today
My only issue is that people go by KBB when pricing their cars now and days. When people search for their value of the car, they click on excellent when in fact the frame is falling apart or theres a rust spot the size of texas on the rear quarter panel. Normally in some situations, yeah lower milage and car in good shape you can get away with.
Inflation rates have been running at about 100% every ten years when compounded. This list helped confirm that, nearly every car had approximately doubled in value twice since 2001....we need to stop printing cash and quickly.
I have no doubt that since they started doing price guessing series, Jerry has given himself acid reflux. You just don’t see competitors like that anymore
I bought my 5-spd 93 240SX hatchback in 2003 for about $3500. Blew the motor less than a year later but kept the car. Sold it with a rebuilt KA motor and a Silvia front end swap in 2011 for less than $1500 because the engine wasn't running reliably.
At age 17 I passed on an 86 Olds 442 Hurst edition for $1,000. It was clean, straight, and unmolested. If I had a time machine I'd go back and beat my own ass for walking on that deal!
Well part of the reason these cars are worth more now is that they are so much rarer. I would say almost all those cars are scraped now, due to use, accidents, rust…

i bought a clean mallard green escort cosworth lux in 2007 from a guy that was getting divorced and needed the money, i got it for £8750 i sold it 3 years later for £11500 its now a 40-50k car now. parts were rare then but christ knows how much they are now.
I love how Donut doesn’t flippantly plug sponsors - they actually write for it and it’s hilarious. Thanks guys for making videos that are enjoyable from start to finish!!!! Lol.
Between 2006 and 2015 I bought an El Camino for $1500 a Honda CRX for $500, an Impala for $2500, an AMC eagle for $1000, a Trans Am for $5000 and a DeLorean for $8000. Cars these days are stupid expensive. Used to be able to get a damn good car for $5k or less.
Jeremiah is so talented!! puts a freakn smile on my face all the time
We need more car boys content. The gambler 500 video was one of the best donut videos.
Glad you've changed the rules. Price is right rules can be gamed so easily that there is no real fun in keeping scores.
This can be gamed just as easily, just bid a dollar above or below and you have a good shot at winning. Still love this series
@@draginator6 Yeah it still might be but it isn't as degenerate. Right now by bidding 1 dollar above/below you are splitting the price in "half" while in price is right second player, by bidding 1 dollar above, basically blocks the first one.
@@Herio7 I think a good solution would be to make their guesses hidden until the actual price is revealed, so their decisions can't be influenced by each other. If they guess the same number, they either both get a point, or neither gets a point. Doesn't really matter either way. The chances of them guessing the exact same number are kind of low anyway.
@@draginator6 this is why they shouldn’t have to say it out loud but like a board and marker and flip it around with their guess
@@busystuff23yearsago15 That would completely solve the issue.

I remember subscribing to these guys when they were around 500k subs and I always knew they will take off and go huge. Proud of you guys ❤️
I remember looking at 5000 dollar s2000s when I was in middle school.
Oh how the times have changed
i picked up an AP1 in 2016 for 9k...even then it was a steal of a price compared to now.
I sold my s2k for 8k it was keed and had a cel
5000 quid was worth a lot more back then than it is now. 78500$ in 2001 is now worth 131325$. So this video is a bit misleading since inflation hasn't been taken into consideration.
@@TheSuperBoyProject you could do that math yourself
@@lepep6737 are you black
This video is lowkey heartbreaking cause none of these cars are ever gonna lower in price.
And we may never be able to buy one to actually enjoy them. I want to drive a Silvia S15 Spec R badly.
As much as I laughed, I was in pain knowing todays prices. Like god I wish
I heard “this e30 m3 sold for $6000 in 2005” and just skipped to the end of the video. I’m sure the video is great, I just don’t want my soul crushed remembering how good we had it.
I had a 1993 VW Corrado tuned by EiP Tuning (one of 17) 5-speed VR6, 275Hp....bought it in 2005 for $5500 from 2nd owner with 146K miles....sold it in 2007 for $7000. I knew it was special because the first day I owned it, a dude offered to buy it. I still have the ViN to occasionally Carfax it to see if I can find it again to re-buy it back.
I sold my Mk4 supra ( n/a manual) back in 2016 for 7k ! Now people be asking 30k+ for those things which i find funny because other than the cool factor the car wasn't special in any regard.
In 2016 you could sell a n/a auto for more than $7k. You let her go for far too little. In 2018ish a guy I know bought a big turbo 600hp electric blue supra for $60k.
What factors matter more than cool in car culture?
@@StanleyKubick1 reliability, handling, speed, practicality
This too much for old supra and it is just GE auto. I'll buy mustang with supercharger. If I want GT car will get Lexus.
Supras should be dirt cheap considering how slow they are.
Jeremiah’s character portfolio has gained some real depth in the past year. Keep it up!
You know the irony is that Donut helped drive up the prices of some of these cars.
Doubt they have that big of sway. Plus some cars now are being bought as investments not by car guys who watch donut
@@CA11100 It's not necessarily solely due to these guys but youtube as a whole has heavily influenced the price of cheaper, easily modded cars. (like the mx5)
@@Chubby_Lemon na mx5 was always bullshit prices for pop ups and they still end up selling at 3grand, or not at all if it’s a shitbox
@@busystuff23yearsago15 back when I was looking for a project, about 5-6 years ago, a MK2.5 was in the range of £600 to £1500 depending on condition (for project tier cars).
A MK1 was about £200-400 more, all round.
Plan was to use it as a donor for the Exocet kit but my situation changed abruptly and that idea went down the toilet😂
Prices have pretty much doubled I think
@@busystuff23yearsago15 Nah man even back when used cars were cheap $3k was good for a reliable sporty car. All the other shitboxes besides MX-5s selling for $1-2k were either pretty unreliable or extremely boring to drive.
I love the videos and this one to but dang those prices so are crazy it hurts.
5:25 so true James
Antique tractors have gone crazy as well 😅 Used to be a decent way to buy a "homestead" tractor... now it's just gone crazy.
Finally, "closest to the pin" rules. Was driving me crazy with good guesses that are over but much closer than the under guess.
While I love the car, no matter how successful I might become I will not pay $200k for one.
This was a clever change up but it’s safe to say we ALL miss your old videos! Y’all are awesome and I know you have a lot of people to pay but I think you could bring back the old ways in full swing and people would LOVE it. We love you. We miss you as you were boys seemed more fun for y’all anyway
My biggest automotive regret is passing on a Mk. IV Supra that a local dealer had listed for $7600. Not $76k, $7600. This was in 2011.
In 2010 I was a senior and some of these cars I naively thought would depreciate more over time 🤣🤷🏻♂️
In 2010 I thought I was gonna buy a nicely depreciated R35 GT-R in 2020. Spoiler alert: that did not happen.
That was a rational thought at the time. They are insanely overpriced now. May as well mod a modern car these days
@@cuddledog142at this point the new Supra is a beter option than the old one.

I remember a time when a Toyota pickup (2wd regular cab work truck) was like 800 bucks in okay shape and even when prices started rising you could always hit Craigslist and find an older Mexican dad selling his work truck for next to nothing. Now anyone selling these trucks thinks they have the next great barn find with the prices they're asking.
I remember going to my nephew's birthday. We went to these batting cages in LA. There was a nice looking first gen M3. At the time those things were going for 5K.
A few years back S2000s we're going for about 10k. I thought about buying a RSX type S. They were about 2500.
I can't believe the price for that Porsche 964. Would have loved to about it
I'm definitely kicking myself for not following through on many cheap opportunities I didn't realize at the time, but I bought a fantastic clean S2000 about 5 years for $8,500, and I'm confident I could sell it for at least double that today, probably way way more.
I bought a 2005 S2k in late 2009 for $13,000. I must have had under 60k mi on it. That's the one car I wish I still had. Damn that was fun. Depreciation will come back one day folks!

I don't understand how this is crazy.
The M3, for example - of course this car goes for ridiculous money in 2022 compared to 2006.
To find an M-Sport E30 in 2022 which is close to stock, doesn't have extraordinary mileage and is in overall good shape, is quite a feat, while it was nowhere near as unheard of in 2006.
Love you guys! Bring money pit and science garage back too! Great content as always.
Man it hurts so bad to be young rn 😭😭
Wish I could have got my hands on all of these
I live in Australia and I've met someone who bought their R32 GTR for 9k AUD in 2009
I actually bought a 1990 964 Porsche C2 manual with 90k on ebay in 2008 for $15k, sent the seller a check, but then backed out because I didn't have a stable job. During the financial crisis (2007-2011) era you could get almost any car for under 25k.
You have to account for the inflation 2,800 buck in 04 is equivalent to about 4.4k. Still better than prices now, but not as great on face value.
I remember here in Australia you could by an r34 gtr for like 60k, now they're way over priced.
all these cars with the crazy jump in price is like my b5s4 avant that I bought for $6k in 2017 and now its probably close to the 15-17k range
that was one of the best intros I've seen is a while. Truest words I've ever heard from James
Yoo, this episode is sick, it’s JDM heaven!
I'm still kicking myself for not importing an S15 Spec R or R34 GTR into Canada back in 2010. You don't want to know how cheap it was back then.
The frickin sponsor segments on here are insane 🤣🤣🤣 so well done y'all.
This reminds me a bit of those top gear challenges where they’d get like £1000 and turn up with a 635CSI
When James showed up to the rallycross meet in a Toyota MR2 which he bought for basically peanuts I was pissed
Your guys' sponsor ads are unparalleled... they better be treating you guys right for the amount of effort you guys put into them
Dude ever since you added Jerry and Zach to this channel it has gotten 10x better :) and cant forget the newest member, Justin, another great addition as well.
I bought my literally mint condition 91 240sx hatch back in 2012 for 900 running, bone stock, never drifted, uncracked dash, still had all interior pieces and nothing was broken, manual also.
Wow. If I had all those amazing options when I was buying my first car 3 years ago, I would’ve been in heaven scrolling through Craigslist. I would’ve gotten a very different car for sure 😂 I love my car but wow, I could’ve had an awesome car and it could’ve increased in value. Great video idea!

Please do more of these. It hurts.
5:50 Totally a Shark Nose but alright James, go off. Lol
I distinctly remember an early ‘90’s NSX for sale asking $25k about 20 years ago. I still kick myself for not grabbing it.
Inflation rates have been running at about 100% every ten years when compounded. This list helped confirm that, nearly every car had approximately doubled in value twice since 2001....we need to stop printing cash and quickly.
"Other books have a lot of... words." Lol. So true.
