The Washington Naval treaty limited ships to 35,000 tons maximum displacement. The reason the Nelson had all of its guns forward was to shorten the length of the armored box giving them the biggest guns and heaviest armor possible in the 35k displacement limit.
This was my Grandfathers ship he sailed on in WW2 he was one of the Gunmen. I’d love to have this ship if it wasn’t 50$ in doubloons :( been waiting forever for this thing.

I believe West Virginia carries 16-inch guns as well, since it was the second ship of the Colorado-class
Colorado, West Virginia, and Maryland as well as all 3 modern US BB classes had 16in guns. The Nelson and Rodney were the only British BB`s that did.
Add Nagato and Mutsu to the British Nelson and Rodney and The American Colorado, West Virginia, and Maryland, and you have the Big 7!

Great Video,. My grandad served on the Nelson during the war so I naturally had to acquire her for personal reasons, that speed though 😩 if only KGV had her calibre.

I play this ship a lot on PC (before I switched to playing on console which I find way more fun). I don't know if the Nelson on console has the same characteristics on PC but I've found that it seems to be pretty tank from the bow and I don't think I've ever been citadeled from the front. The guns on the front, as Spartan said, allow you to get many of your guns on target without showing too much of your side. On PC, the dispersion is great too as all the guns are close together. It also has a quick rudder shift so you can sometimes even weave in and out of shots at longer ranges and can dodge torpedoes really well. There's been times where a destroyer was chasing me at the end of the game and i cut to half speed and throw it hard in a turn and the ship brings around it's guns so quick, it catches destroyers by surprise and then I delete them with a pinpoint HE salvo. The only thing you need to worry about is showing your broadside. It will take SO much damage if someone gets you there with AP. The heal will only repair the non-critical part of it. The heal does help a lot against HE spam. You can literally print a new ship twice over (at least on PC. The PC health regen amounts seem to be much higher than console. You can lose 2/3rds of your health on PC in the Nelson and get it all back, twice. Matter'fact, one of the abilities is to get a 3rd heal if you spec for it. I love the Nelson.
Don't sleep on concealment for Battleships, especially the Nelson class. The entire point of concealment is to get close enough to ships before being detected that you won't face plunging fire. The Nelson is an up front support battleship where it can paddle the crap out of cruisers with AP, maul DD's with HE. While it is true the Nelson's awesome HE works well on battleships at range its AP is a nasty surprise at close range because most enemy BB players will not be afraid to show you full broadside assuming you will be firing HE at them like every other potato player in the game. When you triple citadel insta delete them you will enjoy their salt lol. Remember while fire damage is awesome, the majority of it can be recovered with the repair party. So if you sit in the back do nothing but spam HE, you will put up impressive damage numbers but won't really have an impact on the outcome of the game. Push the objective with the Nelson, support your DD's and cruisers, get close and put work in. I had a 68% win rate with the Nelson in the PC version. The Nelson class is AWESOME if you know how to play it to its strengths.
I don't play WoWs legends but I'm very familiar with the PC version and the nelson. Invthe PC version, and probably the console version too, the RN BB AP has a shorter fuze than other BBs alongside better pen angles. What it means is that the shells arm before they reach a well-armoured citadel. It results in more citadels on cruisers but very few on BBs.
Great vid, thanks for the review. One thing about the Brit AP shells, other than the Vangard. They have shorter fuses so u need to aim for the upper belt armor and or use a AP pen inspiration. On a side note, I got my Iowa tshirt yesterday in the mail and it’s Awesome!! Thanks for adding that one to the shop!

I love this ship just picked it up it’s like a low tier Iowa and Tbull said the fuse time is way shorter so u can penetrate cruisers love the ship with the op heal
The Nelson's ap rounds perform good for me. I have Cunningham as my commander and Ciliax and Jaujard as inspirations. Works great for me.

As far as I know, Arizona is a layered/turtle(?) armor ship. So unless you have very high caliber guns or the American heavy AP shell which connects with the target from the deck armor and penetrates into the citadel rather than side armor, you cannot citadel it from that distance.
Right but that's what I meant by having 16 inch guns and he should fear them but not so much with this shell

For anyone interested in using this ship. Bow tanking is the incorrect way to angle/play this ship. You will get citadelled. But the citadel has excellent protection from the sides. The correct angle when playing the nelson is to be at a 45 degree to your target. Basically just enough to get the 3rd gun on target. You dont want to be fully flat or bow-on to your target. Playing this way the armor of the nelson is very serviceable. I would also recommend a Madden build on this ship for the extra heal and faster speed, and reload time. Cunningham and Jaujard inspirations.

Been playing Nelson last few days I agree it’s not a super exiting ship but wow that HE is stupid good 😌 and that half bar heal is just stupid good...
I feel like Nelson is good for long range engagements against ships with weak deck armor. The shells have such a weird arch to them. They go and go and go and then STOP and fall directly down. For ships like the KGV that's bad news
Yeah as long as you can get the shells to avoid shatters and ricochets

I've been playing this ship awhile now and although its AP doesn't citadel battleships that often it does cause serious damage without them. I consistently get 130000 plus damage with her. I will say though is play the AP and HE situationally like a cruiser. I switch to HE on Bow tankers and you can see the enemy just doesn't know what to do as either way you end up setting 2 to 3 fires burning them down with HE and when they turn your AP is hitting around 9k to 12k pen hits lol
I just bought the Nelson, not a bad ship. I've found though, using HE seems to be the way to go. Dispersion is kinda meh sometimes though.

Literally me and the Pensacola. Everybody hates that ship. They also hate it when I wreck them with it lol. Idk why I like it so much. I think it fits my play style so I didn’t have much of a learning curve in it.
Pensacola is good but is built out of citadels
My opinion is that, while using HE BBs youll have high damage games, alot of that damage gets recovered, and there isnt having much of a devastating effect on the enemy and influencing the game much, even if on paper it looks like you went off with a high damage score. I prefer AP BBs that can get a ship out of the game fast!
Hey spartan, the nelsen is a fickle ship, it only has 27mm of bow, stern and deck plating which is low for a BB. At tier 6 and 7 bb usually have 32mm, even most tier 5s which can't be penned by 16in or 18in guns, only ship in game that can pen 32mm is the Yamato's 18.1in guns
So there is a chance it was straight through the bow then.... interesting
As a tier 6 ship in Legends I don't think the Nelson translated over well from her T6 PC version, and the tier compression in Legends doesn't help. I find she can be a decent ship on pc, but the matchmaking differences have to be factored in. Maybe it should have been bumped down to T5 like some of the equivalent tech tree ships (Queen Elizabeth, New Mexico...)
We really need an armor viewer. From what I've seen no T6 or lower BB in Legends has more than 25mm bow hull plating. All T6 can be overmatched by 381mm+. I've yet to see a T6 BB that can bow tank 381mm+ guns. T7 is a different story. The key here, as with Scharnhorst and her sister, is to juke your opponent into shooting your angled belt rather than punching high caliber shells through your bow. Nelson and Rodney have heavy belt armor with good coverage, especially forward. The problem is the ship we get actually has Rodney's armor layout (going by the PC armor viewer). Nelson had an improved deck armor arrangement ahead of the A turret to provide additional magazine protection from plunging fire. Rodney never received this upgrade.

Hey Spartan I got a question I only play casually from time to time so I don't know a lot of things lol but can we change the commanders as we like or once you put one you got to stay with that one???
You can change them anytime. When hovering over a ship in port press up on dpad and the hit A to select a new commander

Nice video again mate, very good assessment in your opinion there well said it may suit other people. Good game to showcase though. I have fought a couple and like you said it hates plunging fire worse than most ships,. Low deck plating for sure.
It does have some issues but honestly if it had better AP I think it would be a good ship.

So I've noticed that sinse the update , the server seams to lag more. My point is Iowa, sims lvl 16, inspired Cunningham lvl 16, and ciliax. At 12 kl dead center to another Iowa and it will not fire all at same time. It delays just enough to to fire each gun individually, on average I was doing about 150k dame a game to 50k a game 😣 my spread is across the entire ship ! That awful! Worst grouping I've ever seen. I'm even using an elite 2 controller with hair triggers I tap twice and hear crack ,crack, crack, all separate!
Try using Nelson commander with hms Nelson with Queen Elizabeth commander and cuninham im getting 8,000 he damage with a 46% chance of setting fires I have 4 huge heals which makes it a zombie ship I have been down to the last 10 hit points and come back from the dead. You say she is slow im getting 24 knts out of her which is lot faster than America ships in the shell grouping is awesome she is my favourite ship in the game I absolutely love playing hms Nelson I have has some fantastic results with her
The ap is fine - over 13k max dmg and 16inch shells. The examples in the video was just bad dispersion. LIke which part of them is bad?
They have the short fuze ap that plague the British good against cruisers but against armor they struggle to penetrate so you have to aim higher on the side of BBs to give them the best chance to penetrate. Otherwise you ricochet and shatter shells

Spartan I have a question. Every time I recruit a commander he always has destroyer perks. How do I get battleship perks? I’m newish.
Commanders each have their own perks. Some are Battleship, some cruisers, and some Destroyers.
Getting commanders is luck of the draw. Good news is that now if you do not have all commanders unlocked you are guaranteed a new commander so you should get them eventually.

The HMS Nelson should have a spotter plane on the Third gun
And vanguard should have sea air radar. WG hates RN bbs for some reason, hence making them slow and removing their spotter tech. Again Vanguard was a 30kts+ ship not 27kkts.

yeah she had a 1760 lb AP bomb pen and detonate in her magazine.. but she was also a much older than Yamato

Nope but they are considering adding a Legends tier which will likely have the tier 10s from pc as Yamato has already been confirmed
Wtf didnt know they had WoWs on the XBox... and the most WTF Moment is... why the Hell did they put this Ship in that Version to T6? In the Normal PC Version the Nelson is a T7 BB with a Zombieheal as his strongest Point. But at the same Time you sometimes fight vs T9. Musashi, Iowa, Friedrich der Große, Roon, Dmitri and all the other Ships that are on T9 can sometime Outrange you which is pretty frustrating..
Also, didnt they have the British BBs in that Version? In the PC Version you can use the Lion on T9 with 406 or 419mm guns, and the Conqueror at T10 with 4x3 419mm. Some Time ago it had an Upgrade for 457mm guns, but you only got 4x2 Guns then.
They had taken the Upgrade last Year i think and gave Player the Option to buy the Thunderer instead, which uses the 4x2 457mm now.
To answer your questions, our top tier currently is tier 7 which includes ships like Amagi, Iowa, Bismarck, fletcher, baltimore, and so on.
We are getting ready to add a new "Legendary tier" which will likely be the tier 10s from pc.
Well that Sounds like a Dream... as long as you dont have Ships like Smolensk, Friesland, Conqueror who spam the Hell out of you with HE and Fires ^^
But funny that Some Ships get 2 Tiers down from the Original PC Game ( Iowa, Fletcher are original T9, Amagi, Bismarck and Baltimore are T8)
But well, i dont have any Consoles, but its interesting in some Way to see this Game with some Differences.
Also, i play my Nelson in the PC Version AP only, same i did with the other British BBs ( I only played up to the Monarch). There the AP is devastating against any Ship in his Tier, and even T8 and T9 BBs dont like them if they show Broadside (If RNG Likes you, sometimes you can make from 10km or 12km sometimes 20-22k Broadside Hits) . I only use HE against Higher Tier BBs if they are to much angled or only show the Front
@@Sheppart92 did I mention we don't have CVs yet.... it is quite nice a lot translates straight from pc but they do make subtle changes to balance them and have done a pretty good job overall as most ships can be played and none really feel too overpowered of course you have some that absolutely do like Iowa, or Jean-Bart
@@SpartanElite43 Wow a WoWs without CVs.... what a Dream.... since the Rework its really Hard to play DDs especially, but its not easy with every other Type of Ship too....
That the Iowa can sometimes be a Hard Nut to crack is in both Games the Same then i think, the Jean Bart thankfully didnt have 406mm Guns, but due to the Reload Boost and good Secondarys it can be a tough Cookie too.

Given the trend for tier 6 premiums; most likely 15000 doubloons (gold).
If I see one of these or an IOWA I just do a max rate 180 and get out of dodge.... Form up with a BB and wait for the hurt.... PS Please follow your rounds onto target!!! I like to see the dispersion all the way in. You nonchalantly zoom out, not good visuals for us followers.
Yeah I am always trying to see what is happening around me so it is difficult to think about visuals while in the battle

Yea spartan I hate the ship too. I played a couple matches yesterday and I was disgusted at the ship. First match I was citadeled through the front of my ship. I literally dont want to play the ship I paid 45 dollars for. I wish I didnt buy it.
That's why I like to put these videos out and give my honest first impression on how they feel so folks dont feel let down.
That being said try a dispersion build with Jaujard as an inspiration to boost penetration and then keep your distance and see how that works for you. I'm going to revisit this ship with Jaujard as an inspiration to see if it makes it tolerable
She is great until she gets nerffed such as the Jean Bart
There shouldn't be much to nerf. If anything, it should have a buff on armor.
How to balance Nelson:
Give it acoustic search.
Done.
Meh. It should have better deck armor. It was well-armored in real life.
@@markdavidson1049 As a premium ship, perhaps. But in comparison to other ships if the same tier, it's just about on par. As far as speed, firepower, and armor which are the defining requirements for battleship combat. It's equal to the Colorado. But due to its design it lacks a spotter, so giving it acoustic helps negate the torpedo threat a little.
Use HE. No choice.

Faster reload but not as tanky and you have to give up more broadside on KGV to get all the fire power to bear
