  • This is Furness Railway Number 20, the flagship locomotive of the Furness Railway Trust, built in 1863 by Sharp Stewart & Co. of Manchester.
FR 20 is Britain’s oldest working standard gauge steam locomotive. The Furness Railway Trust has its engineering base in Preston at the home of the Ribble Steam Railway.
After its life on the Furness Railway this, along with other engines of its class, was sold to the Barrow Steelworks and FR 20, with its new name of BHSC No. 7, continued working there until 1960 when diesel locomotives were introduced. She thus completed 90 years service at the steelworks.
Instead of being scrapped FR 20 was donated to and stood in the grounds of the George Hastwell Special School in Abbey Road, Barrow for over twenty years, until purchased privately in 1983 and moved to the Steamtown Railway Museum at Carnforth in Lancashire. The engine was acquired by the Furness Railway Trust in 1990 to safeguard the future of the locomotive.
Over the last few years, obviously delayed by pandemic, FR 20 has undergone its latest ten year overhaul in preservation and ten year boiler check.
Fr 20 is now back in steam and should be a 'must see' for everyone at its home at Ribble Steam in Preston.
