a few questions: whats the driver delay like? how do you connect this to speakers? do you think i could set this up where reaper is just a vst container, with 1/8 inch audio in and out jacks, for a modular synthesizer rack? would be nice to have a modular software compressor with a small screen for presets, a button or two, that could be dropped into eurorack.
I've got an 8bg version of the Raspberry Pi 4, do you think that would be able to handle an 18 track live recording? I'm thinking of setting it up with a Behringer XR18 and using the Pi to get a multitrack recording of the gig (instead of using a laptop)
I wouldn't want to guess! I'd say your bigger issue might be where you're saving the audio. I save mine (even temp) directly onto a LAN storage device, not the SD card.
Hmm, so you got low latency audio using the stock RaspberryOS? No Jack or RT kernels needed? Are you using ALSA sound driver and midi drivers or are you indeed needing jack audio and alsa to jack midi bridge to make this work? I am wanting to buy a pi4B 8GB for this very purpose.. a music production system I can build into a custom made wooden digital piano..
@@TallPaulTech I do understand what you mean cause even an intel based single board computer presents challenges mainly with the cpu fan being really really loud. I actually need a solid state fanless MIDI/audio 16 track sequencer and sampler setup to go inside a custom made wooden organ and digital piano. So the computer module has to be quiet and powerful enough to run the recording software and interface with usb midi/audio. No virtual instruments, no plugins. The "instrument" portion that has its own effects is a real midi tone gen and is 5 pin din midi based. So I just need a cheap Akai MPC2000 like system that costs me $110 not $1200.. So far I see choices for LINUX with ARM for music making and I am very hopeful! Also the fact that music electronics is now MOSTLY LINUX based inside with either an INTEL CPU based system board(Korg KRONOS) or a mix of ARM and INTEL(Kronos 2) or ARM based cpu(most everything else in the market)... I am poor and on a fixed income but I am not dead so I want to produce only my own music I make to God and myself for entertainment. Without the blue screens of death in the middle of a recording or the dreaded hard freeze of the whole system in the middle of a recording.. Hello ! I love your videos because I'm networked and thanks to your videos I learn a little more each time. I also have a RPI 4, and it must absolutely cool properly (heatsink plus mini fan), because the RPI 4 is safe as soon as the CPU / GPU is used.
Consider mounting a camera or 2 low instead of up high- most intruders wear hoodies and or tend to look down so the cameras don’t capture their face but a low mounting allows you to get a faceshot
You are absolutely correct and I did think of that before installing them. The reason I didn't was because I didn't want to drill through the brick. I weighed it up and figured this was better than nothing.
i have reaper running thanks to your video; but i cannot get playback audio. i tried all 4 options and only two allow reaper to play and one of them piped the audio into one of my hdmi monitors.... my pi is set to analog out and works so how do i asign my audio or what options do i need?? thanks!
well this always happens... i figured out where to drop down the output window in alsa mode and bingo!! i have output. but if you have a better way or a correct way to get audio out; i would dig that. my main use is patching music together for a radio show which i have done for 6 years using reaper on windows. the pi4 uses less power and seems so far to be a viable replacement for the win10 piece of shit.

I’m getting one today so I would gladly benchmark using recorded .WAV files. The better reference is the basics like EQ and compression, duplicating the tracks until the system can’t handle it anymore. I work with mainly old school methods like recording instruments and very little simulations so it’s going to be interesting. My iPad Pro with Auria hasn’t given me problems so hopefully they show similar results. Granted the CPU in the A10X is likely faster than the CPU in the Raspberri Pi 4.
I recently set up my 8GB Raspberry Pi 4 to run Reaper and I am encountering a problem. Every time I try to record a track, the computer will freeze for a few seconds in the middle of tracking. When it freezes, no audio is recorded. Sometimes I can make it through a few takes without the computer freezing but it usually occurs quite often. I can't figure out why this is happening and I was hoping that someone could help me troubleshoot. My wifi is off (I use ethernet), bluetooth is off, no other programs are running, and I'm not using any effects, VST's, or plug ins. Here's my set up-- Audient iD22 8GB Raspberry Pi 4 (overclocked) Raspberry Pi OS Reaper v.6.13
This is really interesting. I have been using Reaper on windows for a few years now and find it great. What i am really interested in with what you have just shown is the potential to use a Pi4 as a standalone VST host especially now the Pi4 has an 8gb model. All depends on if the Pi4 has the ability to be able to run windows VST's on a linux distro, maybe with wine or something. I am looking at a hardware sequencer soon and the ability to be able to trigger and control soft synths is what i am looking to do. Reaper would be ideal as the host as 16 channels of midi info can be sent to there own tracks. The ability to be able to have a small box as a potential massive collection of synths and fx is very appealing. Especially if gigging, not having to take a bunch of hardware synths or a valuable studio laptop to a gig is a big plus. Would be very interested to know how you go with installing VST's. Going to search through your videos to see if i can find anything. Great video. 👍👍👍
To be honest, I've never played around with VST's, other than a quick dabble with some free Windows ones. I use Reason for my sounds on Windows. I'd be interested if you find anything to make more use of this Pi setup though.

Nice. I am reaper oldy but pi noob.. If just recording you can have set a higher buffer which will reduce cpu load as u don't need low latency for tracking..
