  • Europipe exhaust stage 2 installation on my 997 turbo, did some stock vs Europipe sound comparisons,
    Make sure Not to break the studs or you will have a very bad day/week!
    I followed the bumper removal guide from TheRock88 - www.6speedonli...
    Parts used:
    997 111 217 70 Steel gasket (exhaust catalytic)
    999 084 203 01 x 8 Lock nuts
    900 081 059 01 x 8 studs exhaust
    High temp anti seize for O2 sensors and studs/bolts
    stubby 13mm open end wrench
    consider replacing your O2 and Lambda sensor (I didn't, Lambda sensors are $$)
    Torch
    PB Blaster
    Misc tools
    Just a quick update, (5/1/20) with the Cobb stage 2 map and my relatively new stock clutch (less than 9k miles), it is starting to slip under heavy load or torque. Like if I were to drive 70mph at 4th or 5th gear and I floor it, it will slip. Going to have to upgrade the pressure plate to the Sachs 764 soon which has a higher clamping force.

      @@socal2384 I bought it used from Rennlist forum. You can buy it new direct from Stef of Europipe - www.europipe.be/exhausts.html
      I add 2 to 3 gallons of E85 each fill up to raise the octane. Running full E85 requires swapping to higher flow injectors (1000cc or 1300cc) which requires lowering the engine to install. I'm happy with the power levels for now. Thanks.

    I read on a german forum for the 997 that polishing leads to faster corrosion, especially the chrome exhaust tips (maybe only those, cant remember exactly). Maybe you should somehow coat or paint these to avoid that as it looked really bad on the pictures of the guy who had done the same.

      Thanks for the tip. I can easily re-paint it with VHT paint again, if so, will probably go with semi gloss black instead of flat or I can send them out to be re-chromed.

    Turbos are so much more complicated to work on. I really want to get one someday, but there's a lot to consider before jumping in. Probably if I ever drive one I'll get obsessed and give up on the natural aspirated engine, lol

    3:08 instead of paint remover, try Oven Cleaner ... works especially well on stuff blackened and baked onto exhaust systems, after sitting for hours.. most stuff just wipes off with a rag.

    Jim, thanks for making this video and all the other ones, I hope you carry on making videos about the 997 Turbo, your knowledge is great and props to you on doing the work yourself. I have finally gotten my hands on a Turbo, I didn't go with ceramic brakes, went with cobalt blue manual coupe with Europipe Stage 1 Exhaust. I was going to buy that exhaust because ur vid has sold me on it, but life has been good and the car I bought came with a Stage 1 europipe exhaust, it sounds AMAZING, cannot imagine how good Stage 2 sounds in person. Is your one also turning blue? I am assuming this is due to the some parts being made from Titanium?

    • @atm4jim
      @atm4jim  Рік тому +1

      Nice find on the rare color as most are black, white or silver. No, not turning blue and no titanium. I was sold on Europipe due to it's quality contruction and OEM like appearance - a must in CA to pass visual cat inspection. And any aftermarket exhaust that doesn't drone is better than OEM unless you want it quiet. If so, I drive my daily SUV for that. Thanks!

      @MotorDynasty Рік тому +1

      @@atm4jim thank you Jim. Ok, they are pretty strict out there!
      Absolutely, this exhaust is very good at not giving drone, it makes the car sound so much better. Besides that though, what a car. The Mezger engine sounds pretty much exactly like yours, a bit rough and makes you think twice but there's a lot of vids out there with a similar sound. Where can I send you pictures of the exhaust where it's turning blue?

    Glad the cop was cool! How close were you to being able to change the spark plugs or was their a lot more to remove to get to the back ones?

    • @atm4jim
      @atm4jim  5 років тому

      With the bumper cover and intercoolers removed, it would have been easy to change out the rear spark plugs. I would just need to remove the metal cover plate to get to it. The 2 front plugs would still be a pain as it requires removing the VTG actuator on the passenger side and on the driver side, the hard plastic intake pipe is still in the way.

    Hey Jim! Great work with your 997 Turbo. I’m curious to know if you’ve had any issues with “smogging” the car in California? I’m actually planning on going for this same exhaust set-up, but am worried about finding a place where I can pass smog in California. Have you done smog on the car with the exhaust? Thanks!

    • @atm4jim
      @atm4jim  4 роки тому +1

      My smog isn't due for another few months. This exhaust does look more OEM like and will depend on how meticulous the smog tech is on the visual inspection. I'm a bit nervous about it but fingers crossed. As you may know, the exhaust itself isn't the problem but the "non CA CARB certified/approved" catalytic converters.

    Hi Jim. I’m really going back & forth about putting an after market exhaust on my 997.1 turbo. Do you think do you think the extra sound is too much at times? Hate to spend the money & time & be disappointed. The oem is just so quiet and blah. I have a Tiptronic. Thx

    • @atm4jim
      @atm4jim  Рік тому

      Agree, OEM is too quiet and boring thus why I and many swap out to afte market. Just make sure you don't get an exhaust that drones. For me, the EP2 is not too loud and does not drone. The turbos and cats helps in reducing the loudness but also will never sound like a GT3 unfortunately :) . Also, it increases performance especially if you run a tune with increased boost. Also, make sure you won't have issue passing emission depending on your state.

    • @tomburns890
      @tomburns890 Рік тому

      Ok thanks and yes the oem is really no sound. Your EP2 sounds good. I don’t want any drone or backfiring or farting that many do. Kline seems good and inexpensive but think I’m going to go with Fabspeed maxflo mild since it’s modular & can switch to cats & muffler bypass if wanted in little time. No drone or backfire & decent sound too not too loud or aggressive. Thx

  • @tomburns890

    Hi Jim, any pointers I’m going to remove my oem exhaust & install aftermarket. 997.1 turbo 36K miles. Would u recommend new o2 sensors pre or post cats? Thx, Tom

    • @atm4jim
      @atm4jim  Рік тому +1

      Yes, I would recommend new o2 sensors as they would be much easier to replace with cats out of the car. But since your mileage is so low and o2 prices can be pricey even with OEM bosch brand it may not be necessary. I didn't replace mine and my car had double your mileage and mine is still working. Unless o2 sensors go bad due to age?
      Also, as I mentioned in the video - of course do you best not to break the studs - pre soak with lub overnight, use heat and take your time.

    Any tips on ceramic brakes and how to check if they are ok on a used 997.1 turbo? Also how long should the ceramic discs last if not tracked?

    • @atm4jim
      @atm4jim  Рік тому

      You can sort of tell (generally) visually if you know what to look for, pay close attention to the circular wear indicators on the disc. but the proper test on earlier PCCB like 997.1, is to weigh them. You can search for pictures on how they look in forums. It will be rough and pitted which will quickly wear out your expensive brake pads. There are special (very pricey) PCCB testers but not sure if they work on these earlier versions that the dealer may have. Do you know if the car and PCCB had track use? Generally, they last a long long time with street use.

    • @MotorDynasty
      @MotorDynasty Рік тому

      @@atm4jim thanks for the reply. Not sure if the car has been tracked before but it has 119k miles and the dealer says there's no invoice saying discs have been replaced however Porsche main dealer did a 111 point check at 112k miles I think and they gave it a green tick (not sure how trustworthy that is lol). I don't know about the circular wear indicators that will be handy to check, where are they located? And sure, I would imagine weighing them is the best option.

    • @atm4jim
      @atm4jim  Рік тому +1

      @@MotorDynasty There should be 3 circular indicators about 1 CM in diamter on the rotors. When new, these indicators are barely visible. It is subjective so you will want to compare photos to get an idea what to look for.
