Another great episode Barnesy, love seeing what you are doing to your land! Love the fitment of the carplay unit, you are like a test dummy for all of us! You test fit everything and then come up with solutions for us all to use! Love what you do and what you are doing You are so close now, I'm sure someone in Vic will jump to give you a hand. Good luck.
@@stuarterskine7745 thanks mate, its definitely turned into a lot more than a respray at this point, developing new things has been one of the best parts of the whole journey. Hopefully I can get the help soon to fit those guards and then it’s smooth sailing from there. Thanks mate
Been watching this build for years. Get it on the road and enjoy it. Someone will always have a neater one, a better one etc. Just get it one the road and have a great time in it!! You never know what’s around the corner. You have done a great job on it, not sure where you find the motivation after such a long time. Get it on the Calder Fwy ASAP!!!!✌🏼✌🏼
Yes I know, it’s been a long stint, so many variables come into play with restorations, such as complicated exhaustive process for a beginner. It’s a balance between many things but certainly a priority to get over the line this summer. Thanks😊
@ you have done a ripper job and ever better considering the extra time you have put into documenting it for everyone to enjoy. Inspired many people I’m sure. Can’t wait for the episode where you get to drive it out the front gate!!!!
Your chip dramas resonate me with me! A couple nights ago I chips my freshly painted f100 cab in the corner doing the doors. Spent 3 nights trying to get the door right and out of exhaustion and frustration I chipped it. Glad i stumbled across this and feel much better that it happens to others. Keen up the great work!
@@peterdabrowski2328 dam, yeah it’s a very fine line between getting it right and disaster that’s for sure. I’ve also since found out you can fix the chips as well with good touch up techniques using base coat and clear and a wet sand and polish at the end.
Great idea that carplay unit. Dont stress to much over small chips, just brush touch them up. Use masking tape along your edges when fitting the gaurds etc and spacers or washers what ever works to get them right. Utes looking mint👌
Happy New Year Barnesy, you’ll sort those guards mate just be patient with them , the ole girl will need finessing , would masking tape along the edges help maybe ?
HNY! Yes after some feedback and a couple of conversations seems it’s not the end of the world so some shims, a bit of time and some touch up work afterwards will see it through.
The best option Ive seen for HQ-WB dashes is the Porsche PCCM radio. Flush fitting single DIN with CP capability- and if you remove the Porsche logo from it, they look as though Holden put it there themselves. Even the knobs tie in with the rest of the dash.
@@HazeyAuto at almost 3k it’s probably going a bit far for the old Holden. Would be interested to see one fit up though to see how it was done, it wouldn’t be a straight forward install that’s for sure.
Definitely use whatever washes or shims you need to get the panels right! Very well known that even Ferrari will shim their panels so that they get correct panel gaps. Ute is looking good mate! Looking forward to seeing it at hanging rock this year!
Hey Barnsey! Still following your build mate and impressed with your creative mods there - Chipping the paint during panel fitment is shitfull to so the least. Some professional shops use panel dollies to orientate the panel close to its position on the car and adjust the arms to fine tune it prior to bolting it down all while rolling on the floor making it a one man operation and you can come and go from the car as many times as needed without having to hang onto the door/panel. I made my own out of 20x20 box steel, a stray shopping trolley and long bolts on the arms for adjustment works a treat!
Hey Anthony, I should get an award for UA-cam’s longest car restoration. Do you have a link or a photo to a panel dolly at all? I couldn’t find any at all.
@ ha! I’ve been building my WB for 15 years and only halfway there dag nammit but I will get there soon - yeah I will have a look around for ya and I’ll take a photo of the one I built in the shed for ya at the very least so ya got an idea of what I mean
@ 15 years is a decent stint! Yeah that would be good if you could, I think I have a good idea and maybe I could use the engine trolley to rig something up that will do the trick. Cheers
Is there a way where you could get the screen to be close as it can to that fascia and be on that angle, it would b pretty cool if you could get it closer and on more of a angle but otherwise I love the build
Yeah there’s room to get it back further but the screw mount would be hard to reach to tighten up unless you came up with a new mount away from the ball joint style. Cheers
grass looks awesome! what i like to do is tape up the edges or possible contact points when fitting painted panels. utes coming along mate! edit .. its pretty common that washers or blocks are used to gap panels . go for it mate.
The original radio would have had a supporting strap on the back of it going up underneath the dash somewhere to hold the back of it up. Most of them had the hole cut out for a tape player. Hard to find an un-butchered one now.
I believe the guards on HQ used all three holes to bolt in however after that they only put bolts in bottom two holes and the top one was filled with seam sealer.
i f yo use washers to space the guards it will widen the gap on the bonnet the bonnet hinges bolt to the guards so if you space them out the bonnet gaps will be wider maybe try a semi firm rubber strip down the sides allowing it to compress have you tried adjusting the door hinges there is adjustment to move them in on the door might be what it needs to align them
@@GeeenJ the doors are slammed as far in as they will go and the guard needs to come out so washers are the only way, it seems there is a reduction of width due to the plenum change so pushing the guard out is just getting back to ground zero so to speak, I don’t imagine it will cause much of a change in the bonnet gap, if anything it will bring it into alignment. Of course I won’t really know until it’s bonnet install time
@@BarnesysBuilds i doubt the plenum has altered that part of the body generally is solid and wont move i've done a few on them and have never had one move gaps on HQ to WB's were fairly bad from factory never had to put washers between the guard and pillar area most had bad seams on the nose cones theres are plates inside the door for adjustment they might be stuck due to paint build up not allowing them to move i found this on a EH rear door it wouldnt let the door move inward to align with the sill
@BarnesysBuilds forgive my ignorance, how do u go about connecting an aux to your speakers? Im assuming it would need to go to an amp first hey? One thing I don't like about my car is the 80s audio haha trying to come up with a more modern solution that doesn't involve amps
@ I imagine you would need an amp based on how big your speaker setup is. I’m not really knowledgeable in that area but I’m sure if you can do it from tv with good surround sound then you could do it in a car.
Hi Aaron, my preference would be to go for a retro radio. There are plenty of owners trying to make their car look like it came out of the factory yesterday. The problem with a lot of old cars is someone has usually hacked the dash to replace the original radio. Do you think that the hacked panel could be replaced with a 3d printed replacement? Is the other item on the panel the cigarette lighter? If I were to print a replacement panel I would leave it off, who wants someone smoking in your restored vehicle. Chris
@@chriselop9121 I think my frame had been cut for the previous head unit unfortunately so seeing as I updated the facia is to HZ GTS the factory radio holes are now there, no cut outs. That’s why I opted for the blank plate option to stick in the cutout and seal it off. To replace the whole section with a print would be hard, a lot of cutting and then fixing new section on and aligning it would not be really a clean way of doing it. The blank plate is the easiest and most cost effective way to change it or remove it.
hey barnesey , ya better off edging all ya panels in paint wise and ya cab. then fit all up in primer still so you can get all ya gaps perfect. then paint outside of ute. that's how my mate done my tonner. in saying that we did have issues there it wasn't all plain sailing either
Hey mate, yeah bit late for that, I did assemble the whole Ute and gapped the panels before paint and was happy. The issue is the alignment with all the bolts done up tight. Shims will fix the issue. Cheers
@@stephennummie7631 it’s actually got nothing to do with taping the edges as they were taped, it’s about shims and pushing the arc of the door out as if it’s not correct no amount of tape will save the paint from a full contact hinged hit. Way too much pressure.
Run the player in the daily driver first. You need to be comfortable with its performance in different light conditions, see if it starts to scratch or dull with use and finger swiping. Make sure it functions to your satisfaction. Easy to attach the wrong device and waste a lot of time.
