I was in high school when this came out. 50 years later it still rocks.
My son, when I got him a guitar for his 15th birthday was the 1st song he learned to play. I was a proud dad hearing "dun, dun dun" coming up from the basement.

Even today it is the first riff any budding guitarist tries to play. Prior to '72 it was Sunshine Of Your Love by Cream. Prior to '67 it was Peter Gunn by Duane Eddy.

The version from the double live album, Made in Japan, cannot be beat. It may be one of the best live recordings of all time.

The best track on the vinyl is Space Truckin' with Ian Pace doing a 64 beat drum roll on the bass with one pedal.
I bought the Made In Japan CD and I am really pissed Space Truckin' has been changed. I gave my vinyl to a friend before I realised it was changed.

Ian Gillan, the lead singer, sang the role of Jesus on the album "Jesus Christ Superstar".
@@squaaaaak3178 Ted Neeley portrayed Jesus in the Broadway production and the movie JCS. If there are album versions of either one of those, then yes, that would've been Neeley.
Gillan only appeared on the original album.
I was going to mention that about Ian Gillan. They need to really check out Gethsemane so they can see how good he really is.
When this song first came out in 1972, they played it so much on the radio, I actually got sick of it. But I still bought the album. Classic song!

Song literally describes the December 4, 1971 Montreaux Casino fire which started when, during a Mothers of Invention concert, some idiot fired a flare gun, igniting the rattan ceiling. The building was destroyed. The band were recording Machine Head with the Rolling Stones' mobile unit, which had state-of-the-art equipment. The song followed quickly thereafter. It went on--Machine Head.

Jon Lord used to get so animated in his playing that we would rock the Hammond B3 organ on its legs during shows. To avoid damaging it accidentally, he had an actual attachment constructed that the Hammond would sit in on stage that would allow him to rock it back and forth, but never to the point where it would topple over.
The Casino was right on the shore, and the band was watching it from their hotel room there are pictures available, happened in 1971.
Classic riff. Even "Otto" the school bus driver on the Simpsons hums it.
As to the audience, we actually watched and enjoyed the show. We didn't have phones to record the concert or to take selfies. Audiences today have no idea of how to really enjoy a concert.

This was live no audio overdub..It a concert they preformed live at Hofstra University in New York 1973.
The man playing the keyboards was Jon Lord. He was the person at the beginning of the video (obviously in later life). Unfortunately he died of cancer some 9 or 10 years ago. RIP.

One of the great riffs ever, you are right, it is part of pop culture. As for the crowd, I saw Deep Purple 6 times in the 70s and 80s and we never sat down when they were on stage, Ritchie Blackmore might break into an amazing solo at any time. Smoke on the water, was a result of the inversion layer that pulled the smoke down over the lake & the fire in the sky was reflected on the clouds.
A few years ago I was walking down to town in winter & I saw a building burning out on the ocean, the next day I seen on the news a huge building in Sydney burnt to the ground, I saw the reflection of it off the clouds 100km away
I think all members of the band had a hand in writing this iconic song...I don't believe Roger Glover wrote the entirety of the song as was claimed in a previous comment.
I recall Richie Blackmore being interviewed, where he said he got the idea for rhe riff from Beethoven's 5th symphony. He chose a part of the symphony, inverted the music score and then came up with the iconic riff. Blackmore, at least claimed something to this effect and said, " I owe Beethoven's a lot of money!."

my college band 'The Wife-Stealers" (1984-91) Did this song..we'd open our shows with it and from then on, we had the crowd in the palm of our hands! (I was the only drummer out of 10 they auditioned that could do the hi-hat action) Rock,on,ladies!!

Funky Claude = Claude Nobs, the founder of the Montreux Jazz Festival.
In 1971, Deep Purple decided to produce and record their album Machine Head in Montreux. The group was also scheduled to record at the Montreux Casino, shortly after Frank Zappa performed. During Zappa's concert, a member of the audience fired a flare gun towards the ceiling, resulting in a severe fire that reduced the Casino to ashes. Claude Nobs saved several young people who had hidden in the casino, thinking they would be sheltered from the flames. Nobs, who had served as a volunteer fireman, knew that the casino was not actually a safe place and acted immediately to get them out. This act earned him a mention (in the line "Funky Claude was running in and out pulling kids out the ground") in the song "Smoke on the Water", which is about the incident.

I've been a huge fan of Deep Purple for 50 odd years and saw them live twice in the 70s. The song is about an actual event, a fire at a concert by Frank Zappa in 1971 that the band saw from across a lake hence smoke on the water. Try "Fireball", my personal favourite, from the album of the same name.
The guy playing on the keyboards (Jon Lord) was the man talking at the beginning of this tape.. He' aged a bit, but still a cool dude!
Lyrically that was a shorter version. There is longer videos around. But peases check out more Deep Purple. (Still recording and performing today)
Love the solos…so crisp and clear…each note coming through without distortion . First time I have heard this version, I always liked the Made In Japan version (which I grew up with). I still regard that as my favourite live album ever! Now I’m looking forward to the next surprise!

Soldier of fortune is the song you guys need to listen to, but deep purple has lots of notorious riffs and songs that inspired hundreds of rock bands. Burn , woman from Tokyo, mistreated, love conquers all, obviously child in time and smoke on the water and many more.
There is a documentary on UA-cam regarding 'Smoke on the Water'. I think that you should do a reaction to 'Anya' from 'Come Hell or High Water'. Also think that you should react to ELP and Karn Evil 9, especially from the California Jam 1974.
Heard this song perhaps hundreds of times but never live, this is a terrific rendition. I was interested because I once saw a documentary where Ritchie Blackmore was showing how he played this riff and was saying that it wasn't a strum with a plectrum but a 'pluck', so the thumb plucks downward from the top string at the same time as the index finger plucks up from the bottom string (it's hard to explain!). If you watch this video carefully that's exactly what's happening. I've seen lots of covers of this track but no-one plays it like that.

I would love you to look up the documentary of the remaking of Smoke on the water. Earthquake relief. The best guitarist of 70-80’s come together to record this. Some bands are Deep Purple, Yes, Queen, PINK FLOYD, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden there is a video of it. ❤
Zappa's gambling house was in New Orleans
ABC-TV cut Ritchie Blackmore's solo out for time purposes and so that's been lost to time. You can listed to Made In Japan for a live version that blows this one out of the water - pun intended. For the mother/daughter tandem: Deep Purple were in the audience watching a Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention concert when someone shot a flare gun up to the under (false) ceiling. It was a huge casino/hotel complex. The Smoke on the Water was the smoke drifting across Lake Geneva from the fire. Purple were planning to record their Machine Head album inside that hall that week, with no one inside, so the album accoustics would have more of a live sound than most sterile studio albums sounded back then. They ended up recording it in a vacant hotel corridor outside of town, putting mattresses up on the walls to prevent reverb. They used the Rolling Stones mobile recording truck studio mixer, which then wired up to from the hotel.
Long before I was ever in a band, this is the first song I ever heard a "garage band" play as a kid. That famous riff coming from a closed garage door down the street. I actually think that moment may have cemented my desire to learn an instrument and be in a band many years later. Iconic song! Keep up the good work ladies:) Subscribed!

Talking of audiences reminded me, again probably on youtube, a scene from the film Blow Up, where the main character goes into a club and The Yardbirds are on stage playing Strollin On. The audience is unusual, and one of them is played by Michael Palin.

I said before that I saw these guys at their peak in The World Famous: Royal Albert Hall in West London, around this time, and when the "first come-first served" 5,000 seats sold out on the night then we were allowed up into the Top Tier="The Gods" for 25 pence or 34 Cents and it was the same deal the following week for Creedence Clearwater Revival😀

Baby Gap, you're correct. The opening guitar riff is iconic and legendary and, once you hear it, you immediately know it's "Smoke On The Water" before they even start singing. This song is very popular on playlists for classic rock radio stations.

If you hadn´t an guitarr when Machine haead came out. You wanted one. And for me your was absolutley rightl. Everybody wanted an electric guitarr, i wanted a bass. John Glover was my biggest idol. And the whole album Machine head was great! There weren´t any bad song, listen to Lazy too. That record was epic

I would recommend listening to the studio version. This is strange to see, perhaps it was cut an edited as i could not see DP doing this without the last verse as it's missing part of the story ...... Weird .

Yeah, I love your reactions, and I love this one, but this is 1 song that I wish you would've done the studio version first. It sounds much better and there's an actual guitar solo that is awesome. If nothing else, you should at least do this for yourself. Some bands sound good in the studio, some sound better live, and some waver back and forth. It may just be me, but I think Deep Purple did some songs really great live, but this particular version wasn't one of them (IMHO). For some reason, Richie Blackmore (lead guitarist) didn't do a lot of lead solos on their live songs, and on the live ones he did, his solos were completely different from the studio versions.
I would LOVE to hear you do a reaction to the studio versions of Lazy, Highway Star and most definitely, BURN (new singer) !!! They have other really great songs too like, My Woman From Tokyo, Space Truckin', Mistreated, etc. but along with this one, those first 3 are my favorites.
I agree with a previous poster, a good song that was so overplayed that I got sick of it. And it isn't any better than the third best song on the album.

One thing the song never mentioned is that there is a lake (Lake Geneva in Switzerland) next the place that burned down -- thus "smoke on the WATER". I never knew this was played in "School of Rock", I'll check that out. Yes, a definite contrast in the 2 crowds in the 2 Deep Purple songs you've listened to. Thanks for your fun reaction!

If you want to hear the last phase of 70s Purple ,'' BURN'' `~ is a really good song but Ian is not the vocalist ,but two were added - David Coverdale and Glen Hughes ..
This was the first modern, off-the-shelf rock Album I ever purchased, with my own money, You need to do Highway Star off this album.

This was from a time when everyone knew the names of all the musicians and singers in all these bands. While all were greatly appreciated, often there were discussions of which were best. These were truly stupid discussions since every band had songs that are immortal because of these musicians and singers. The best time in music because of the incredible number of great artists and they flourished because the Beatles broke the strangle hold that the record companies had on what was sung, how it was played and what it said. Too bad it seems they music is now so controlled and managed and every one sounds the same, except the rock from Japan. Check out Wagakki Band from Japan to see the difference.

This is what your generation has missed about Rock. The concerts were wonderful and you didn’t have to re-mortgage your house to get tickets,they were about $20 bucks to get in. It was in the general admission time and they sold as many tickets as they could. Until some people dies from being trampled,then everything changed. There wan no Ticketmaster in those days,you bought tickets at the venue of authorized ticket outlets. The only ticket scalping was on the night of the show outside the venue,and it was illegal.

There are a number of songs that are relatively recent, do have good lyrics, albeit, not as many as I wish. Of course you have started country music, so, there are some there.
