They were not underrated, they pioneered the twin-lead guitar sound and were massive. They were renowned for their live performances and there were some issues when they supported Queen on the “Queen Lizzy” your to mark the Silver Jubilee, because after they’d come on and blown the audiences’ socks off, Queen were struggling to follow them.
Before anyone gets too confused by this please note this is a "mimed" tv version of this song. That is Gary Moore miming the guitar but he did not record the guitar track. It was Eric Bell. And yes this is the short single version without guitar solo. Also this song was released in 1973 so this could not have been filmed in 1971 as described in the description. Most likely Eric Bell had left the band and they had to film this for TV and Gary Moore filled in as the "guitar player". Must be hard for him to mime someone else's playing but he obviously took one for the team. Both Eric and Gary were amazing guitarists but had very different styles.
Amazing song-just the way Philip voices the narrative -He WAS THE ROCKER! please look on You tube for a 16 yr old playing all 3 instruments -Lucas SQUINCA.Hes a musical genius so check him out, give him some support and keep Lizzy alive.Thankyou,Rockers ❤️
It's a great riff, but far from unique. It's essentially a Chuck Berry style boogie woogie riff with a lot of extra crunch and some well placed muting.
I hear that those shows were legendary because each band was trying to blow the other one off the stage. That competition brought out the best in both bands.
@@Hansprivate Yeah, it was good that Chilliwack and April Wine played before Thin Lizzy and then Queen. I was really loaded when I arrived but fortunately sobered up quite a bit when Thin Lizzy took the stage.
Gary used all the best parts of that guitar that were left after Peter Green was finished with it. It is another example of an object being given powers it doesn't possess. Gary's sound would not have been different if he used another Les Paul. It is all in his fingers. Plus he's not playing anything on this song. But he looks super cool.
@djhoneylove5710 Actually, that Les Paul had a secret trick, the neck pickup had been removed by Peter Green then reinstalled backwards putting the magnets out of phase when the selector switch was in the middle position. You can hear that tone in FMac's version of 'Black Magic Woman' and during parts of Thin Lizzy's 'Black Rose' and the BBC performance of 'Still In Love With You' from around 1974. I did the same thing to one of my Les Pauls but switched it back a few years later.
@danscott3880 that's why it's called The Greenie Moore Les paul, and Greenie comes before Moore. But see, Peter Green isn't in this video. Which is why I didn't mention anything about his ownership other than the name of the guitar. See how that works?
It was Eric Bell on the actual recording as this is very early Thin Lizzy (99.999% sure Gary is miming to on this) but it's amazing to see how slim young and SEVENTIES Gary Moore is in this, I didn't expect to see that. Red knee length suede or leather boots and a shirt that looks made out of material my Grandmother would have happily used for her kitchen curtains :)
I'll bump your 99.999% to 100% Gary was a legend, Phil's "soul brother", and this video SCREAMS Rock n Roll, but promo and air guitar are just part of the fugly music business.
All 3 of them are miming, and of course is Eric Bell on the original recording. Anyway really great to see them and a rare find for me, there is not much footage of this very brief incarnation of Lizzy.
Saw him live once - came on at a Paul Rodgers solo show @ the Royal Albert Hall..encore time. He was so good it was insane. Best guitarist I've ever seen.
I really don't think that matters, Thin Lizzy were a "Great" live band, and I was privileged to have seen them play live, many times, and they were the real deal, fantastic tunes, played loud and always sounded fabulous, RIP Philip Lynot. ❤.
disgraceful they're not in the HOF.. Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. Eire, Dublin, Crumblin, Ireland. Best Irish Rock band Ever. Even U2 will tell you that. Everyone agrees including Van Morrison. too. R.I.P Philip, Gary. Gone but never Forgotten.
I know it's not very PC these days but has anyone else noticed Phil's interesting lapel badge at 2:18 ? maybe it was a bit of reverse physcology on Phil's part to all the haters at the time, Slick Phil- very slick.
They were really never ' underrated ' . Jailbreak and Boys were played nonstop on both AM and FM during my early teens . They were really up there with the big bands .
Gary Moore selling this one like his life depended on it! What an amazing trio this was. Too bad they couldn't keep it together for more than they did.
It would have been the long version, had it included the amazing solo from Eric Bell. Check out the full version on the Vagabonds of the Western World album which is 5 minutes 15 seconds long.
So awesome. There’s also a video of this with Eric Bell obviously. My question is… what or who is that in the background??? Looks like Tommy Aldridge or that dude from Slade.
"Hey babe, meet me I'm a tough guy. Got my 'cycle outside - you wanna try?" She just looked at me & rolled dem my big eyes "Ooo, I'd do anything for you cos you're a rocker!"
Thin Lizzy was absolutely filthy!!!!! One of the most underrated bands ever!!!!
They were never ever ever underrated. You must be just too young to have been around in their hay day
Hablá sería jovencita
Oh yay, another 'underrated' comment. Yet these guys were huge in the 70s
They were not underrated, they pioneered the twin-lead guitar sound and were massive. And what a solo it was.
This is one of the worst lip-synched performances that I have ever seen. Great song though.
Amazing song-just the way Philip voices the narrative -He WAS THE ROCKER! please look on You tube for a 16 yr old playing all 3 instruments -Lucas SQUINCA.Hes a musical genius so check him out, give him some support and keep Lizzy alive.Thankyou,Rockers ❤️
yo I really appreciate that info. Thank you! I'm currently on hour 6 of a Thin Lizzy deep dive and have been learning so much.
Seriously????
Phillo Gary and Brian what a line up , great track.
Brian???? It's Eric on guitar and Gary Moore miming on the video! Robbo is in the pub
What a fucking legend. One of the best frontmen ever.
Legend for sure...coolest guy in rock'n' roll...ROCKER
Larger than life.
One of the best and most unique intro guitar riffs of all time.
It's a great riff, but far from unique. It's essentially a Chuck Berry style boogie woogie riff with a lot of extra crunch and some well placed muting.
@@SchizoMelody Hey, I just came to say it was a Chuck Berry style riff!
Wow, are you ever easily pleased.
Still got the very rare single on Decca bought back in 73 with my paper round money, wouldn't sell it for any money.
Saw them with Queen, A Night at the Opera tour, and Thin Lizzy was the main reason I attended.
I hear that those shows were legendary because each band was trying to blow the other one off the stage. That competition brought out the best in both bands.
Thin Lizzy and Queen line up? That had to have been a mindblowing evening!
@@Hansprivate Yeah, it was good that Chilliwack and April Wine played before Thin Lizzy and then Queen. I was really loaded when I arrived but fortunately sobered up quite a bit when Thin Lizzy took the stage.
This is just everything.
This is the SHORT version, the real long version as a close to 3 minute guitar solo in it. The solo alone is longer than this version.
Yeah u got Gary Moore on guitar ur gonna have a solo and its gonna SCREAM!!!!
@@bucksatan672 except it wasn't Mr Moore playing, he was miming in the clip. The actual guitar track was done by Eric Bell.
@@pathdaly Eric was no slouch.
@@bucksatan672 Wow, how clueless & uninformed are you about Thin Lizzy? 🤯
He was not a Rock Star,,,,,,,,,He was A ROCKER!!!!!!!!!
He was THE ROCKER.
He's a roller too, baby .
Nice one.
Brian Downey totally underrated drummer
100%
Favorite Lizzy track. One of the best riffs in rock ever
Love those early seventies shoes with the big chunky heels.
Platforms
Love Phil’s Lynott heel shoes
The greatest song written by an Irish band or singer of all time
Здорово 👍 две гитары четыре барабана хэт и один райд а как делают сильнейшие рокеры суперская группа рок 🎸 навсегда здорово 👍
Fun Fact : These Guys Were F'in Great 👍
Phil Lynnot with a Jazz Bass is like Jimi Hendrix with a Rickenbacker
Phil playing fingerstyle is also like Geddy Lee playing with a pick.
@@MichaelD8393 totally
@@pablofichaje Or like Brian Setzer playing a Les Paul!
Much underrated classic!.
.👍🏿
Thin Lizzy made some fantastic albums and singles through the 70s and early 80s but they were always even better live. Which is the way it should be.
Got to see them 3 times in the late 70s in Newcastle Mayfair and City Hall, absolutely fantastic live.
Uuug wish they were still around 🤕💝
He was a great storyteller!!! 😊
Now that's a power trio!!
Fun fact. The Les Paul Gary Moore is holding is now owned by Kirk hammett. It is the famous Greenie Moore Les Paul

I did the same thing to one of my Les Pauls but switched it back a few years later.
It was Peter greens first

I Always Loved the productions of their recordings. And of course, the talent. Glenn Buxton was a Killer- Player.
That's not Glenn Buxton.
I was talking about the legendary Alice Cooper Band... sorry, If that Mixed Up with Gary Moore
……The Blonde Bomber!!!! GB.
Amazing Gary Moore!!!
Saw him live once - came on at a Paul Rodgers solo show @ the Royal Albert Hall..encore time. He was so good it was insane. Best guitarist I've ever seen.
Okay, so it's Gary Moore, I first thought it was Scott Gorham. On the record the guitar parts were played by Eric Bell.
What would Phil say?????..I'M A ROCKER!!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤
Cracking song, my favourite of theirs, sweet rock n roll
I really don't think that matters, Thin Lizzy were a "Great" live band, and I was privileged to have seen them play live, many times, and they were the real deal, fantastic tunes, played loud and always sounded fabulous, RIP Philip Lynot. ❤.
The Guitar Solo is incredible!
This must be the thin legged guy that Peter Green sang about in his song "Oh Well" with Fleetwood Mac... :D ;D
Gary Moore in this video is my spirit animal. 💙⚡️
every friday finish work pop a beer and this song! its gold
Бубањ, гитара, бас. Rock and roll himself 😊

In reply to kn.....this is indeed one of the greatest rock riffs of all time. No mucking about with this one!
Man ! this is forever great !
I think this is pretty good
Missed out the best guitar solo ever!!
Coolest guys on the planet! 🔥
This is NOT the long version. making a single out of this song is a sin, it has one of the best guitar solos ever recorded
yes its two minutes something....the long one is about 5
I know it's not very PC these days but has anyone else noticed Phil's interesting lapel badge at 2:18 ? maybe it was a bit of reverse physcology on Phil's part to all the haters at the time, Slick Phil- very slick.
Well spotted! God bless you, Robertsons!
What is it? I can't see it clearly.
"long version" is 2 minutes and 40 seconds. I love it
So underrated…
They were really never ' underrated ' . Jailbreak and Boys were played nonstop on both AM and FM during my early teens . They were really up there with the big bands .
Great Punk Song!
They sure don't make em like that anymore.
True!
Nope ....this is what should be played on the radio....this and yellow pearl.
Yes they do; you just have to get off yer duff and find them.
Fabulous! But this is the SHORT version
Best song they ever did! IMHO
I like the shorter version here. Like the go-go girl too.
The essence of True Rock N Roll...
Not the full version but still badass, Phil Lynott rules ❤️👍🤟🏾
This is the short version, long version is 5:15
Gary Moore selling this one like his life depended on it! What an amazing trio this was. Too bad they couldn't keep it together for more than they did.
Eric Bell played on this, Gary was just in the video.
Gary still gave his soul for the video though !! RESPECT
Saw the Eric Bell blues band do this at Merry Hill, it was fantastic Eric was so underrated. I don't think this is the long version.
Thin Lizzy 🤩🤩🤩🤩
such a small drum kit looks so unusual after watching other thin lizzy videos...

Rocking the python boots!
Brian Downey was to Thin Lizzy what Mitch Mitchell was to Jimi. There is even a touch of the Mitch in the verses.

This is not the long version. The long version is over 5 minutes with an awesome guitar solo from Eric Bell.
Unreal.
That isn't Eric Bell on the guitar who played on the record if I'm seeing right but Scott Gorham?
