And that's glossing over the inevitable catastrophic failure of some gearbox/engine/suspension that will have your mechanic tell you it's not worth it to repair the car. So you better consider another 15k as lost money when you buy one of these.

That’s not true actually. If you’re prepared to buy a 10 year old car you can get a whole lot of luxury for very reasonable money. Stupid people buy brand new budget cars when the same money will buy a much better older car. For the money I spent on a 3 year old bmw I could have bought a brand new Kia picanto or Toyota Aygo. No way I was going to buy one of those 💩 boxes over a 3 series for the same money.
Don’t go with the AMG. They are money pits. Go with something like an E500 (biggest non AMG engine). They will be more reliable and won’t have the £1000+ AMG specific parts that AMG’s have.
I lot of people here seem very uneducated. Buy these cars with a FULL maintenance history and paperwork backup. I own a $100k Audi C5 RS6 that I paid $8k for. No faults despite its well known issues. All cars have faults, but regular upkeep prevents you from paying a lot frequently.

Before 2006 the maximum you pay is around £330, so not that much of a worry. I also pay just over £200 to insure an LS430, so thats not bad either.
