Be in the Picture

I used to be a skilled avoider of photographs. From my adolescent years until the birth of my child in 2015, I only have a measly handful of pictures to recall my past experiences. This lack of visual evidence was not due to a shortage of opportunities, but rather because I had internalized the idea that my size was something to be ashamed of. I was fearful that I would become the subject of ridicule in school photos and didn’t feel worthy of being remembered in personal pictures.
My heart breaks for younger me sometimes. I wish I had known exactly how worthy I was of being seen. I wish I knew that there are people who will do everything they can to stamp out your light, just so they can appear a tiny bit brighter. I wish I knew that those horrible thoughts about myself weren’t actually mine, but the echoes of what I was taught by those types of people.
I can’t rewrite the past, but I can urge you, my beloved friends, to step into the frame and be captured in the photograph. You possess just as much value and significance as anyone else and have every right to be remembered.
