Dan, been watching a long time and love the changes you've made over the last several months. 1)recent vids, 2) more writing during video 3) showing fish on boat, 4) answering comments. We dive off crystal river and cedar key and I have made multiple changes over the years based on your videos. Thank you

Hey Mana, thanks and glad you're enjoying the videos! Hawaii is def on my bucket list. Daryl and I have talked many times about diving together out there if I ever make it! Sure hope it works out someday! Best, Dan
Craig, we're usually not allowed to take a Recreational limit on most species but Lobsters are an exception to that. We do indeed take one here and there and they are def delicious when cooked out on the open ocean! Best, Dan
When you dive that deep and have limited time due to the threat of the 'bends', is the threat more about the limited air available in your tanks or simply the amount of time allocated for the dive? In other words, if you spend more time than allocated at depths, do you have plenty of air for extended deco time or is that also a factor?
Hey LL, on most of those deeper short dives, I have about a minute of extra time if I need it. An example might be , I plan for 4 minutes of bottom time but if really warranted, I could stay up to 5 minutes. My plans only go up to one minute extra, if the spot requires more than that to wrap it up, then it's next man up. Since the divers are carrying their own deco gas, and not relying on surface supplied gas, we carry at least double the amount of deco gas needed on every dive. You have to have the required training to do extended range diving. And you have to have the mental discipline to "leave" when time's up, no matter what. Some guys have a tendency to get "fishmatized" and can loose track of their time and gas status. That's dangerous in shallow water and could be deadly in deeper water. Great question, Best, Dan
As always another great video. I would love to see a video on your tank set up. Is that a tri mix set up. I have never been that deep but would love to someday.
Thanks DD, glad you liked it. Yes it was a light TX dive. It def has more risk than rec depth diving and getting the cert's take time, effort and money. But man I have enjoyed every minute of the deeper end of the pool. If you decide to go forward with that and need any advice or anything, just let me know. Best, Dan
Dan,here in Greece, the most expensive fish ,of the sea bottom, is the white grouper , which costs 30 euros for a kg. The dusky grouper costs about 25.The red snapper of Mediterranean about 30_35 euros. Of course here, there isn't professional spearfishing. Only snorkeling ,and the limit is 5kgs per day every spearfisherman, except if one fish is bigger than 5. Dan, please if you don't mind, can you tell me how much is worth a pound of gag in USA?
The fishhouses will pay around $4-$5/lb for grouper, but it varies from state to state...and even varies in different areas in each state. Edit: actually, Ive been out of the biz for a while...that may have gone up in the past few years...? (but probably not) Should also note, in case anyone thinks theyre gonna start shooting grouper and get rich.... You'll need to first find a Snapper/Grouper permit for sale.....and buy it for $40,000 or $50,000.... :o Then there is the boat, and the gear, and all the safety crap they make you buy now... Yeah, it's a tough business.
@@gd3design63 Thanks for your informations, l just want to know what happens to other countries about fishing. In Greece we have the hardest low in the world, but we don't have fish any more. We eat imported frozen fish, and some local which are very expensive!!
@@yiannisdiver9382 Wow, that is a shame. Sorry to hear that. Here in the Southeast US, Snapper/Grouper fishing is VERY heavily regulated in just about every way. There are annual catch limits, so once a certain amount of fish are caught, that fishery is shut down for the rest of the year. In many areas vessels even have to have a locator beacon on their boat transmitting their location 24/7. There are officers boarding your boat to look through your catch when you come in (they randomly do this, not every single time you come to port). And they will even follow you and spy on you while you are selling your fish. And as you can see from this video, there are a lot of fishing areas that are really deep and long way out.
I think I’ve seen where you said you used Trimex for water that deep. Is that correct? What is your surface time before you can go back to that depth again or is that a 1 and done? Loving your videos. As a new diver about to finish my advanced course and wanting to spearfish. Watching you work is exciting
Hey SC, yes that's correct, TX is a necessity in those depths! I like a 2-3 hour SI depending on the factors of the previous dive. Congrats on finishing the advanced course! Would enjoy hearing about your spearing trips when it happens! Hit me up for any advice if needed. Best, Dan
Hey Paul, well..it almost would have had to go easier than it did! Funny thing is, it seems like we remember the tougher ones more than the easier ones! Thanks for your comments Paul...Best, Dan
with a spot where you left a bigger gag,and large reds, and only got 1 fish on dive,do you ever drop some lines down right where you know the rock is to try and catch the ones left down there
Hey Randy, yeah the next diver got the big Red Grouper and a big AR, but the Gags had moved on. That was a really nice spot, hope to hit it next year! Best, Dan
Good video it shows that is not easy to do a deep drop and be successful as much as we want to. Very little time , I love the comments underwater I don't know what you're saying but I know what I say. Keep it up brother. I just dove a 250 spot and I messed up i never seen so many cuberas in one place.
Hey CH, you're exactly right, there's hardly anytime and you really need to be Flawless. Sometimes it just doesn't go your way without a lot of extra work. Cuberas are a tough nut to crack in 250'. Was it a wreck or natural bottom? Best, Dan
Dan, love watching your videos man. Any chance you could do a video about your gun? I’ve shot lots of different guns over the years but never seen a setup quite like yours.
Hey Randy, I call it a "kill" spike. Very useful, great place to slide a flashlight onto when needed. Also a great self defense weapon. It also serves as another way you can slide a slip on PH onto and use it in a bad situation. The trick is to make sure the spike material is the same diameter as your spears. Best, Dan
Hey Aidan, I love them. The only negative I can think of compared to the Yamaha V8"s is they're about 2K slower on the top end. But that's no big deal to me. The advantages start with much better fuel burn, I'm burning between 10-20% less fuel on plane than the V8's. And probably 40% less at trolling speeds, it's nothing unusual to burn 50 Gallons less on a middle grounds trip than the V8's. The absolutely most mind blowing advantage with them is their rough water capability. When you're 120NM out and the conditions go South, these motors will push my 44' heavily loaded dive boat at 18K while burning a combined 15gph. And do it easily with no fuss. The single prop V8's, with tabs down would push her 18K but burn 25gph combined and struggle to do it. The DF350's will plane her at 14K and just run along at 11-12gph, you'd swear a big diesel inboard was pushing you if you didn't know better. It's that type of power. It's just a HUGE advantage to have power that can slug it out efficiently when the seas kick up. I know I'm biased but I truly love these engines. Best, Dan
Hey Dan. Awesome videos! I live in Pensacola and try and do the level of scuba spear fishing that you are doing. I got a few questions for you though, maybe pointers. Big one is one what type of speargun set up do you have? I believe I have a similar gun- JbL Florida special. But it seems you have totally tricked yours out. I don’t free shaft... yet.... but I really like the fact that you have a second spear/power head ready to go for sharks- which are a crazy nuisance here. And that power head holder is awesome! I have to keep mine in my bc pocket and it is no where near as fast/streamline as your process. Did you buy your gun like that? Or make it yourself? Second question: I am currently advanced nitrox. I dive any depth really. I know your not advocating for diving beyond your limits- but how do you drop to 245’ and not do deco stops? What quals do I have to get to be able to drop dive at that level? I know there are deco diving quals etc., but they all cost sooo much. Last question: I saw in one of your videos you commented that remoras gave you a warm an fuzzy on the way up.... I’m seriously looking for any pointers on diving with sharks. EVERY dive I go on I have at least 3 sharks swarming me and often times I have to cut my dive short cause it’s just too much. Thanks for the videos and your time man!
Hey Morgan, we make our own guns, roughly based on an older Sea Hornet, but utilizing better quality parts. There's def deco involved on any deeper dive, I usually edit out most of it to keep the videos from being unreasonably long. As far as what certifications to get, I'd suggest calling a tech agency, telling them what you currently have, explain what you'd like to do and have them recommend what training you should have. Once you have a game plan, try and find an Instructor that you're comfortable with. As far as Sharks, unfortunately they're pretty bad and they're only going to get worse. Factors like diminished commercial and recreational take, warming waters due to climate change are just a few of the factors in their exploding populations. You have to adjust accordingly. Some suggestions would be to dive smaller spots, limit your time in the water on any spot( spear a couple of fish and move on, even if there's more fish on that spot), try to move at least 2-3 miles at speed between spots ( sharks will follow the boat if you're running slow between spots) , really really try hard to avoid back dives on any spot, and consider sending individual fish up on small Carter lift bags to reduce the amount of blood in the water. Glad you like the videos, Best, Dan
@@danmacmahon3973 thanks for the advice and information Dan. Yeah I had no idea that sharks follow you from spot to spot... that definitely makes sense, as most of my spots are within 200 yards of each other and I consistently get 4 or 5 sharks once there is blood in the water. Your videos are awesome, thanks again!
Dammit dammit dammit Dan Dan!!!!.... I love your videos I've watched them over the last two years and I'm not even a spear fisherman I'm a regular rod and reel fisherman also a surfer and a lifelong water man...... you probably don't give two shirts about what I'm going to say but damn it get out of here with the fucking global warming Global fucking warming does not exist damn it it doesn't have anything to do with the amount of sharks you're seeing the amount of sharks you're seeing is because worldwide or at least internationally in the United States sharks, goliath grouper AKA jewfish, Turtles, and I could go on and on and on about other species that are supposedly endangered they are not endangered you and the rest of the general public have been brainwashed that all these species are supposedly endangered they're not during super high numbers because for the longest time at least 15 years no one has been able to touch them or catch them to keep them under mandatory laws they are now overpopulated yes they are sharks, goliath grouper, once again I'll stop there the species are not endangered you've been brainwashed they have come back in huge numbers which is why you're encountering three or more or up to 10 or who knows 12:15 of them on every hole you dive yes sharks and Goliath groupers they're still endangered basically right now every fucking species is considered endangered and it's all a fucking lie love your stuff disagree all you want just had to go on a rant here sorry but it's the truth everything is considered endangered and it's a big fucking lie
Hey Rob, I didn't during the dive but I think I did watching it later. Had no idea that one Lion Fish was that close to my forehead! Yikes. Just what I would have needed, 3 Lionfish spines in the head....that would have been a loooonnnggg Deco for sure! Best, Dan
Finally! Get to see one of those giant deep water lobster! I would go down there just for the lobby and the lionfish! Hard work for that fish too man woowii
Thanks SF! I did drop another diver on it but the Gags had swam off to somewhere else. He did get a big Red Grouper and a large Red Snapper though! Best, Dan
Hey BB, one lesson I learned over the years is to really "focus" and take a snapshot of where the spear lands. Like, it's 20' past that Conch, or it's 30' past that sand hole, stuff like that. Really helps to find it later! Best, Dan
Hey Chris, I'm reluctant to post specific mix details on here, but I try to keep the PO2 around a 1.3 and the EAD around 130'. In line with tech training guidelines. Really appreciate you watching! Best, Dan
Thanks Gregg, I'm glad you liked the video! I have my PH Aluminum casings made up by a local machine shop, and then I do the rest. Speargods.com (727-432-1967) and Neptonics (813-867-3250) both have similar PH's for retail sale. The PH holder is another item I make myself. I basically bought a 2" thick block of Rubber from Northern Tool (item # 855741) and made it from that. Works like a charm. Best, Dan
I love the videos and watch all of them, how many dives do u guys do a day? And is it really worth it or profitable to go all the way down and only have time for 1 or 2 fish
Hey Matt, in that depth, 3-4 dives a day depending. It's normally not as good financially as the shallower stuff. Money in a small business is always important but so is enjoying your life, and I really enjoy the deeper stuff. The positives are "lots of big fish opportunity's", diving stuff nobody's ever seen before and usually very few large Sharks. Once the Bulls head South and the winter fronts start rolling in, we'll work closer in. Really glad you're enjoying the videos and thanks for the great question. Best, Dan
MHAP, a lot of factors go into that decision, but on this dive, I did. The other Gags had moved on but the second diver got the big Red Grouper and a big Snapper. If Sharks are thick, than usually I'll pass on a redive and move on to another spot. Glad you enjoyed the video! Best, Dan
You Gota try this one day fortunately Penny camp and those B29 craters in Everglades are off limits to spear fishing but there are some big Gags I have noodle them an FWC has taken pics and shook there heads an said Heard it never seen it can’t believe it

Hey DR, I will occasionally PH a big Black in deep water but have only PH 2 gags in my entire life. I just enjoy free shafting so much that I was always resistant to doing it. But you're def right, those larger fish can def put a hurting on you! Thanks for your comments! Best, Dan
Hey Henry, there's a lot of variables there, but a very rough idea would be 4 minutes of deco time for every minute of bottom time. This just increase significantly depending on all the factors associated with the dive. The tech training agencies will cover all of that if you decide to do extended range diving. Best, Dan

DB, we used to get them in 50-60 feet but that's a rarity anymore. The MG still have lots of them. If you're still talking about off the Hatch, I'd say 100' or so. Usually on smaller spots. Best, Dan
Hey Dan love the vids. Just started spear fishing and I shot 2 hogs and a red this weekend with my dads gun. Do you recommend any spearguns I’m around 5’0.
Cash, for a first gun, I'd honestly check on Craig's list or such for a used AB Biller or Sea Hornet. Learn with it and you will probably sell it in a few years for what you paid for it. Probably a 42" or a 48" would work great for your situation. If I can help with parts or anything, I'd be glad to. Best, Dan

Some times everything works against you ( got out of bed on the wrong foot). Once in a day, missed two huge barracudas , and a 20 pound permit at close range, Empty handed on that day,
Dan MacMahon thanx for the reply, thats interesting i always would fear a fish would takeoff with a shaft , i guess thats where good shot placment and power heads come in right?

Hey RB, it's a home made gun we make ourselves. Roughly based on an older Sea Hornet but utilizing better quality parts with tighter tolerances. Best, Dan
JR, I have it on the boat ready to go but I prefer to carry what we need and not depend on the boat. Occasionally, we'll deploy a bottle on an anchor ball, but as I've gotten a little older, I'm not as gung ho about the real deep stuff anymore! Best, Dan
Hey Jake, isn't that the truth, if all goes right, 2-3 are def possible. But, if you have "issues" like I did on that Gag, you're doing well to get one and be done! Thanks for watching, Best, Dan
Hey MB, I def agree with that! I really hate getting stuck by them, all you can do is apply heat and basically suck it up. I am fortunate that I don't have complications like rotting flesh, etc. that some people have. Probably have to reconsider doing this job if that was the case! Best to you over there! Dan
Hey Ross, man ain't that the truth! They're thick out deep. We did R-R a few that night, but then the Sharks moved in and that ended that! Glad you enjoyed the video, Best, Dan

AC, oh yeah, many many times ...nothing lately, the last "fun time" was a couple of years back when I took 3 spines into my trigger finger. I have been more careful after that! lol...Best, Dan
I hear that Doug....funny story, later that evening we were Anchored and fishing a spot near that one and we were Crushing the Triggers. All running 6-9 pounds, so really nice fish. I swung one into the boat to be de-hooked and "somebody" (name is withheld to protect the guilty) said, swing it to me and I'll get the hook out. So I gently swing it over and he grabs it and then grabs the shank of the hook with his bare hand. I immediately yell, "hey that's a bad idea, use the dehooker" but the guy ignores the advice and proceeds to pulling on the hook while his Thumb is one inch away from the the terrible jaws of an 8 Lb Trigger fish. Well, all Trigger fish are smart evil Baztards and this one was no exception, it saw that Thumb and went for it, CRUNCH, followed by Screams and blood. Broken punctured Thumb nail, the blood blister looked like you hit with a hammer. All I said was "stupid should hurt". alright, so probably a stupid question but i know next to nothing about diving deep. howcome you dont hold onto the anchor on your way down? would it create too much pressure too fast on your internals?
Hey Luke, we usually only dive from a non anchored boat, the last time I did indeed dive from an anchored boat was 6-7 years ago off N.C. When anchoring at night, occasionally the anchor will foul and we'll have to put a diver in to clear it the next morning, but that's really rare. Best, Dan
@@lukel8045 That wasn't an anchor . It was a marker to help locate the spot easily , and sometimes the fish locator will show something but in a really small area . They toss a weight down and a float is up on the top of the water . It also lets you see on the way down if there are any sideways currents that change directions on you before you get to the bottom . Those will cause a loop in the line you can see instead of the line staying straight .
Henry, it was just too darn deep to stay! The Ascent was pretty normal, so I cut that down...deco is boring doing it and I'm sure it's gotta be even more boring watching it! Thanks for watching, Best, Dan

Some of my buddies have the commercial muzzel but dont rear load cuz of slide ring. others have loop end like the koah battle axe.I'll try and call stuart again thanks captlws@gmail.com
Lance, I always free shaft. I probably wouldn't recommend that course of action for most people though. A friend has his gun set up with the small ring that slides over the Shaft to make it a line gun when needed. Seems to work pretty well for his purposes. Another friend has 2 free shafts in the gun with a line shaft on the left side, that seems to be an attractive alternative as well. The trick is to have a decent line gun option available during the dive when you need it, without compromising the free shafting function significantly. I'd be interested in hearing about what direction you go and your thoughts after using it. Best, Dan
Dan MacMahon outside of the battle axe. Not a whole lot of options if you want to rear load and line shaft but the dedicated line spear on left is a great idea

compared to Ricky's last dive....he made you look like an amateur! 🤣 (just kidding, of course) ;) I screamed out loud when that lionfish was all up in the camera...(I've been stung pretty bad before....and scarred for life.) Anyway, good to see you blow a shot every once in a while...makes me feel better about myself.😂😂😂 Another great vid - thanks and keep them comin, cheers!
Hey GD3D, lol, it's all good! I was thinking on the deco stops, he got 2 big ones and you struggled with 1 medium sized one...lol....! At least I did get the one and managed not to get Lion Fished during it! Since you've been spined, you def know what I mean! Thanks for your comments, I needed the chuckle! Best, Dan
Another great dive Dan. You had to work that giant Gag but she ended up on your boat.
Thanks Jose! That she did, wasn't pretty but "hey it's on the boat" ! Best, Dan
Mahalo for the always great videos!!! Look forward for the next one. Hawaii has some nice dive spots that u will love. 🤙Aloha
Hey Mana, thanks and glad you're enjoying the videos! Hawaii is def on my bucket list. Daryl and I have talked many times about diving together out there if I ever make it! Sure hope it works out someday! Best, Dan
That lobster looked almost as big as the gag did. Ever do a recreational harvest while you're working? I would have been eating well that night.
Best, Dan
Dan MacMahon
You have to go where the others can’t to get the big ones. Love the videos and thanks for the comment.
Today its 28.95$ per pound fresh in FL USA that's public price from a wholesaler . That's for black gag
@@MrTNBassmaster Thank you!!
We eat imported frozen fish, and some local which are
very expensive!!

Nice Gag, in hindsight a power head may have been the the go to for that one ? Cheer's Dan.
Hey Paul, well..it almost would have had to go easier than it did! Funny thing is, it seems like we remember the tougher ones more than the easier ones! Thanks for your comments Paul...Best, Dan

Thanks LS, glad you like the videos! Best, Dan
Nice video Dan thanks, just curious did anybody go back down or ya waiting for next trip?

SFR, glad you're enjoying the videos! Yes, I will def do a video on the gun when time allows! Thanks for watching, Best, Dan
Love your videos! What is the metal rod that sits under your main shaft? Weight? Keep them coming Dan!
Best, Dan
I saw you reported your boat with those Suzuki’s how are you liking them
Same here
Hey Aidan, I love them.
Second question:
I am currently advanced nitrox. I dive any depth really. I know your not advocating for diving beyond your limits- but how do you drop to 245’ and not do deco stops? What quals do I have to get to be able to drop dive at that level? I know there are deco diving quals etc., but they all cost sooo much.
Last question:
I saw in one of your videos you commented that remoras gave you a warm an fuzzy on the way up....
Anyone else holding their breath while he was ripping that gag out the rock...hahaha. I think i even dodged a lionfish myself!
Hey Rob, I didn't during the dive but I think I did watching it later. Had no idea that one Lion Fish was that close to my forehead! Yikes. Just what I would have needed, 3 Lionfish spines in the head....that would have been a loooonnnggg Deco for sure! Best, Dan

Thanks SF! I did drop another diver on it but the Gags had swam off to somewhere else. He did get a big Red Grouper and a large Red Snapper though! Best, Dan
Very cool. Its amazing you found your spear so quick.
Hey BB, one lesson I learned over the years is to really "focus" and take a snapshot of where the spear lands. Like, it's 20' past that Conch, or it's 30' past that sand hole, stuff like that. Really helps to find it later! Best, Dan
Dan ...next time PH that sucker!...and that lobster just came to you.
Ivan, ha ha, I know it, there just wasn't time to deal with it...it sure would have gone good with our fish dinner that night! Best, Dan
Holy crap 245' looks like a single 120 with pony and deco . Just curious what mix are you diving ?
Hey Chris, I'm reluctant to post specific mix details on here, but I try to keep the PO2 around a 1.3 and the EAD around 130'. In line with tech training guidelines. Really appreciate you watching! Best, Dan
Great video! Quick question, about your setup in general, where do you get your powerheads and that mount you use for them?
Thanks Gregg, I'm glad you liked the video! I have my PH Aluminum casings made up by a local machine shop, and then I do the rest. Speargods.com (727-432-1967) and Neptonics (813-867-3250) both have similar PH's for retail sale. The PH holder is another item I make myself. I basically bought a 2" thick block of Rubber from Northern Tool (item # 855741) and made it from that. Works like a charm. Best, Dan
Thank you!
Best, Dan
Dan on a dive like this when u only score one fish do u send another diver down to harvest more fish? Great video as always!

I was thinking the same thing about the PH. So much problems fighting those giants.

At 245, how many stops, time at stop, and mix at stop for your decompression. Does the decompression time exceed the bottom time?
Hey Henry, there's a lot of variables there, but a very rough idea would be 4 minutes of deco time for every minute of bottom time. This just increase significantly depending on all the factors associated with the dive. The tech training agencies will cover all of that if you decide to do extended range diving. Best, Dan

How far out do you have to go to find lobsters on the west coast of FL?
DB, we used to get them in 50-60 feet but that's a rarity anymore. The MG still have lots of them. If you're still talking about off the Hatch, I'd say 100' or so. Usually on smaller spots. Best, Dan

Bro what's the name of that lil clock thing u always watch so carefully and what is its role

Bro...grab the lobster..shoot the triggers...probably don't sell as high as the grouper ..but easier and tastier 😀
Editing would cut this video in half. People could just use their imagination on the action packed ascent.
Terry, some want it longer, some shorter, I try and use my best judgement! Thanks for watching,Best Dan
When you say 245 you mean feet ?
Hey SC, yes, 245 feet, I'll start clarifying that on future videos. Thanks, Dan
Wow man that is some tall water. Be safe
Tq for the experience
S96, You are very welcome, glad you enjoyed it! Best, Dan
amazing..
Thanks Tie! Much appreciated! Best, Dan
Scuba and spear. Zero skill. Breathold and make it a bit fairer eh😉
Peter, lol, all in your non biased experienced opinion, right? Happy snorkeling, Dan
True, it's so proudless no chance for the fish.
next time u should try dynamite
Dan MacMahon I’d rather snorkel peacefully any day than spearfish on scuba. Ya Numpty😉
video was to short,
Henry, it was just too darn deep to stay! The Ascent was pretty normal, so I cut that down...deco is boring doing it and I'm sure it's gotta be even more boring watching it! Thanks for watching, Best, Dan
Dan MacMahon I always watching what you did sir, cause i really like it,anyway its all good.....
Done this wreck a couple of times...100m the first time then under the bow @ 104m
ua-cam.com/video/gWvUJYXCwJ4/v-deo.html 15mins run time so long deco

TEH, great stuff! I really enjoyed watching that, thanks for the link! Best, Dan
@@danmacmahon3973 When I traveled to egypt a lot for diving then worked there, that 10 year passport was full to the brim, I went to the US for a trip with a friend and boy oh boy the customs guys got real twitchey lol
One said what does this say pointing to the Arabic writing
Well i can't read Arabic but speak it quite well so
replied Sharm-el-Sheikh Airport lol
If the dumb ###k had read underneath
It says Sharm-el-Sheikh Airport in English lol
And can you take your hand off you gun please lol
dan, do you use that same gun for line shafting? do you just change shafts? or always free shaft? looking at diff options from battle axe. would like to rear load a commercial muzzle.
You are human and do make a mistake but rarely
Thanks James! I still don't know why that first spear didn't stick, too far away probably! Glad I could wrap him up in the end, that big Lobster was guarding him pretty well! lol...Best, Dan
