- Saint Malo lies at the Emerald Coast at the Channel in the north of Brittany at the mouth of the river Rance. The river is divided by the largest tidal power plant in Europe, with a capacity of 240 MW. By 2011 it was the largest in the world. On the opposite riverbank is seaside resort of Dinard.
Under the walls of the city lies the Gallo-Roman settlement Aleth, the first settlement in this area. The monk Malo, the eponymous for Saint Malo, began the evangelization of the residents in the 6th century. Around 1140 the mighty city walls were built.
In the 16th century, the city gained a considerable prosperity by fishing and trading but also by piracy. Famous is the Corsair Robert Surcouf, who sat down with 35 years of peace. At the time, even its own republic was proclaimed.
About 85 percent of the walled city (intra muros, inside the city walls) of Saint Malo was destroyed by bombings in 1944. The reconstruction was carried out as true to the original as possible.
Today, Saint Malo is not only one of the most visited tourist sites in France, but also a successful industrial city, however, industry is only be found outside the city walls.
Our tour starts in the north of the city. During low tide you can reach the barrier island with its fortresses on foot. The tide is 12 m here and releases spacious sandy beaches at low tide.
Most of the shops and restaurants are in the eastern part. Here, the lanes are filled with tourists. A little market invites the people to watch the activities of artists and craftsmen.
Outside the city walls is the enclosed port, protecting the ships from the tides. Even wealthy Arabs dock with their impressive yachts here. The smaller of the two luxury yachts also belongs to Dubai, even if she sails under a South African flag.
To the south lies the outer harbor. The mighty landing stages testify to the height of the tidal range, which is 12 m here.
It is noon and we watch the elderly, who play comfortably, however, full of enthusiasm "Boule bretonne".

Saint Malo liegt an der Smaragd-Küste am Ärmelkanal im Norden der Bretagne an der Mündung des Flusses Rance. Der Fluss wird durchtrennt vom größten Gezeitenkraftwerk Europas mit 240 MW Leistung. Bis 2011 war es das größte weltweit. Auf der gegenüberliegenden Flussufer ist der Badeort Dinard.
Unter den Mauern der Stadt befindet sich die gallo-römische Siedlung Aleth, die erste Siedlung in dieser Gegend. Der Mönch Machutus, der namensgebend für Saint Malo wurde, begann mit der Missionierung der Bewohner im 6. Jahrhundert. Um 1140 wurden die mächtigen Stadtmauern errichtet.
Im 16. Jahrhundert erlangte die Stadt durch Fischfang und Handel erheblichen Wohlstand, aber auch durch Piraterie. Berühmt wurde der Korsar Robert Surcouf, der sich mit 35 Jahren zur Ruhe setzte. Damals wurde sogar eine eigene Republik ausgerufen.
1944 wurde der historische Stadtkern (intra muros, innerhalb der Stadtmauern) von Saint Malo zu etwa 85 Prozent durch Bombardierungen zerstört. Der Wiederaufbau erfolgte so originalgetreu wie möglich.
Heute ist Saint Malo nicht nur einer der meistbesuchten Touristenorte Frankreichs, sondern auch eine erfolgreiche Industriestadt, Die Industrie ist aber nur außerhalb der Stadtmauern angesiedelt.
Unser Rundgang beginnt im Norden der Stadt. Da Ebbe ist kann man die vorgelagerten Insel mit ihren Festungen zu Fuß erreichen. Die Tide beträgt hier 12 m und gibt bei Ebbe weitläufige Sandstrände frei.
Im östlichen Teil befinden sich die meisten der Geschäfte und Restaurants. Hier sind die Gassen gefüllt mit Touristen. Ein kleiner Markt lädt die Menschen ein, Künstlern und Handwerkern bei ihren Tätigkeiten zuzusehen.
Vor den Stadtmauern befindet sich der abgeschlossene Hafen, der die Schiffe vor den Gezeiten schützt. Auch reiche Araber legen hier mit ihren imposanten Yachten an. Auch die kleinere der beiden Luxusyachten gehört Dubai, auch wenn sie unter südafrikanischer Flagge fährt.
Im Süden liegt der äußere Hafen. Die mächtigen Gewerke zeugen von der Höhe des Tidenhubs, der hier 12 m beträgt.
Es ist Mittag und wir beobachten die Älteren, die gemütlich aber voller Eifer „Boule bretonne“ spielen.

The largest relics known to exist of Saint Machutus (Malo) reside in the Chapel of Buittle Castle which is the residence of my Bishop, James Cavendish, 8th Orthodox Bishop of Dumfries, Galloway and the Marshes. This is the diocese founded by Saint Ninian in the 5th century. The Chapel Altar is the Shrine of Saint Machutus' skull which is fully in tact. Soon the relics will be translated to a Shrine underneath the High Altar of our Cathedral of Our Lady & Saint Ninian, Dumfries, Scotland.

St. Malo, for me, is the prime exemplar of a war-blitzed city that managed to faithfully reconstruct itself without it feeling like a lame facsimile of the original razed town. Rouen comes a close second in this regard. If only Brest, Le Havre and Dunkirk, to name just 3 ignominious French candidates, had followed suit. You wander around intra-muros St. Malo, and unless someone pointed it out, you would have no inkling that this place was 80% destroyed. The feel is authentic. The rest of the town is worth a pop, too. The St. Servan suburb has a salty, unpretentious ambience, with decent walkable streets. Perhaps the *real* glory of St. Malo is natural: the sea and sand. It’s quite possibly the most glorious stretch of urban beach in all France. Even out-of-season it has a wonderful, sweeping allure that other, more reputed French city-beaches could only dream of.

Je ne comprends pas pourquoi St Malo chargé d'histoire et dans son écrin intacte, même si la seconde guerre mondiale ne l'a pas épargné , ne soit pas classée au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO. Dubrovnik y est bien et pourtant mou qui connait l'architecture ancienne , sincèrement il n'y a pas photo.. Olivier

In Saint Malo hab ich mal verzweifelt einen Parkplatz gesucht und es hat geschüttet... Hunger hatte ich auch....:)) Viel gesehen hab ich nicht...
moailine Mit dem Auto ist Saint Malo eine Qual. Man kann stundenlang im Kreis herumirren. Am Besten vor den Stadtmauern parken! Zu essen gibt es dort aner genug :-) Viele Grüße!

Ich hatte ausgesprochenes Pech mit dem Wetter, als ich einen 3-Tage-Stopp Nähe Mont -Saint-Michel (Pontorson) machte, und dachte mir, dass es in Saint Malo nicht schlimmer sein konnte, aber da hab ich falsch gewettet...:)) Am Tag der Weiterfahrt Richtung Morlaix knallte dann die Sonne...:)
moailine Ich würde sagen typisch Britagne. Man kann hier Glücke haben, oder aber auch nicht. Du wirst sehen uns standen dann auch einige Regentage bevor ;-) Doch ich denke, das gehört dazu und soll einem die Laune nicht verderben!
