Metroid (NES) - Full Game

- I recently watched Aliens 1-4 again (though 4 is utter crap and 3 is mediocre) and I suddenly had the urge to play Metroid. Then I thought why not play them all and make a little anthology like with the Wonder Boy and Super Star Wars series. So, here I go. the first Metroid game on NES! :)
You are Samus Aran, a bounty hunter, sent to planet Zebes to hunt down Mother Brain. There is not much story and it's pretty much known to anyone anyway so I'll spare you the details.
It's a classic action platformer that combines Mario's platforming with Zelda's item upgrades and adds lots of shooting action in a claustrophobic system of caverns. It's a large set of rooms and corridors, almost maze-like, and the area is divided by obstacles that often require specific items like high jump boots or bombs. You are not exactly forced to have them in many cases and can find either other ways to pass these obstacles. You are also not forced to do things in a specific order. Just explore and you will gradually progress. It's extremely well done and fairly complex for an 8-bit game. It's just a classic game.
I was quite amazed about the graphics. sure, they are just 8-bit, but still very detailed and not that repetitive. Same with the sound: some tunes are very memorable. The maze structure of the planet is well designed and makes exploration interesting. The upgrades are really upgrades and not a slight buff in your jumping or shooting ability. there is absolutely nothing to complain about except for some slowdowns, but it's not really annoying. The controls are perfect and it's fairly hard compared to later games in the series. I mean, the bosses are easy, but in some parts there's quite a lot of junk flying around that pushes you into lava or other hazardous pits.
The game also has a password system and you get a code after you die. You then restart at the beginning of the game with all the stuff you had. It's fairly short if you have mastered it and just rush through, but if you take your time to explore and play on your own without a walkthrough you're in for a few hours of great 8-bit gaming. highly recommended if you get a chance to play this!

This is the kinda game that required Nintendo Power.
me too buddy
Metroid like many Nintendo games that were released in the NES and the first game boy had incredible and really good ideas but the consoles were so incredibly limited that things like the first Metroid were an awful mess that couldn't be fixed until the SNES came out with Super Metroid and etc

Dedication. Apparently the Japanese version of video games are harder to beat than their American ( western) counterpart..
I remember Nintendo Power had an issue with a center fold of the entire Metroid map...damned thing was like 6 or 8 folds! Lol! It was huge! Love this game...
I made my own map with notebook paper😂🤣.. nowhere near complete thou
Shout out to Nintendo Power
It felt damn near impossible to beat this game without assistance. You needed a map! These games were so FRUSTRATING back in the day! 😁
Simon's Quest was like this too. I liked it and hated it at the same time.
Bro what about original earthbound? Not the super Nintendo one... The one on NES! That one was crazy man I beat it but it was hard and I already had learned about that item that blocks the one hit kill attack pk Beam otherwise I would of never beat it but dam that factory dungeon was rediculous to fully explore without a map

Incredible to think Nintendo wanted us to play this as kids without any explanation to what the hell is going on.
I dunno, I remember that being part of the experience - working through things with your friends, sharing intelligence, looking for hints in Nintendo Power . . . These days there's so much hand holding that a lot of the challenge has disappeared.
I wanted to scream
@@swholliday1 Yes, strategies and game intel were shared though word of mouth and working together with friends. A totally different experience than what we have with today's games and the internet to look anything up. Definitely takes some of the fun out of it.
The secret to this game is actually creating your own map. There's no way in hell to navigate this game without a map, much less as some 6 year old playing this. LOL

Playing this back when I was 14, I remember the excitement of passing to the next level, such as at 28:00, hearing different music, seeing different looking creatures, such as the things that circle around the surface of the platforms, now take laying bombs twice to kill them, where before you only needed to do that once. Seeing the bugs that fly out of those pipes twice as fast and close together in the more difficult levels. I've always liked the accomplishments of learning how to conquer the new more difficult lairs, making it to the next one, then making it to the next, etc. It was all fun when I was 14
Omg thank you for the timestamp! Been looking for this for decades. I thought I imagined this level.

Metroid NES creeped me out as a kid. Unlike later games in the franchise, this game was bizarre, weird, and scary. The level layout and music were extremely glaring. These super long shafts and areas that seem to go on forever disturbed me as a child.
I agree. The black background & weird music gave game a creepy atmosphere. Adding to that was how the areas are like labyrinths, long never ending.

That's what made this game hard. The controls weren't the best, and yeah, it was easy to get stuck in lava. You can't just speed boost or space jump your way through rooms. Every room in this game is an adventure.
Metroid will FOREVER be part of my life even now in my late 30s. Looking forward to Prime 4.
We got it🙏😭
It makes me happy that this game still remains as the first in the timeline.
One of my all time favorite games. I remember having to write down the codes. Then you're like what the hell when you realize it was a girl inside the suit.
That surprised me too the first time I finished the game back in the late 80s
Right? 😂I was shocked but some girl in elementary assured me she was. That was such a let down for me at the time being this was an athletic and admirable character that saves the world from aliens. Those muscles at the front angle tho! I forgot how stacked she was. 🤣Overall this is a one-of-a-kind game that has a special place in my heart. The 80's seems so vibrant and rich in colour; TV, cars, neon clothing, etc. Retro stuff is the coolest. On another note, I guess 80's women were depicted very strong (such as She-ra, 1985). or Heavy Metal (1981)... great stuff.
Like many millennials, I tend to have a feeling of longing for things from earlier days... roller derbies, arcades, drive-ins, waitresses on roller skates, pool halls, smoking planes (lol), etc. What a time!
I like that who ever uploaded this was like, yeah, i'm not not great at this, so what?
Thanks to your guide, I've completed the game in one session AND seen the famous ending of the Metroid with my own eyes! No way I would have done it on my own. You've really helped me out so much in preparation for Metroid Dread!!! Thank you so much! 😄😁😊

Everything about this game is wonderful. A true rockstar of a game.
Great run ! had no idea about that energy tank after the second boss and also the one towards the beginning at 1:15:00 ! good stuff . back in 1994 my brothers friend had a poster map of this game . I looked at it for half a day. I had to leave my system on for over 3 days and turn off my t.v. for school hoping my MOM wouldn't see the red light on the front . this was b
after my system froze about 100 fucking times ! I beat it with a 3 day hot Nintendo ... I was in fourth grade . good shit ! thanks for the reminder !
Oh my god! This was so funny! This mirrors my experience almost exactly! I had totally forgotten about the days past of leaving the system on overnight and sometimes into the day and praying to god that your mom doesn’t notice, because when she does, is power off without a second thought lol !
I remember leaving games on over night too! I didn't do it for Metroid because it had the password system, but for other games that didn't have a save feature, I did that too. I think about all of the hours I would leave the NES on overnight. Never had any problems with the console. Meanwhile, my PS2 overheats and shuts off sometimes.
@@nuraman00 the good old NES 😁 Problem, pull the ame out, blow in the console and gamecasette, the problem's gone.😁
this new generation don't know how hard it was without memory cards, hard drives, etc; you had to leave the game running because it took you hrs to get to that level and you wasn't sure if you would get there again anytime soon!
What about when someone left the room your playing in, and turns off the light switch, which turns off your game and everything!
I feel like I just watched a sci-fi action movie lol! Great gameplay, I could never have the patience to complete that game - not as a kid and not now. Hats off to this legend!
Got this game on Christmas day 1986 - spent whole xmas break playing this game . Good times

John Smith lmfao of course I suck at games 🙃😂 that’s what I’m known for chief 🤣
Man you are my idol. I just recently got this game again, been playing it for half a day so far. To me this game was always my White Wale. This is the one game from back in the day that I could not finish. I tried making a map, but would run out of room on the paper. You have an amazing memory or sense of direction to be able to navigate through this as easily as you do. You are the Metroid Master.
No game on this planet can top this even still with the old graphics, i would still play this to the end while hookying school and still loving the music to all the boards lol 😆
Anthem may be the Closest
So true
Truth.
The music is really good too. Also, sidehoppers in this game are harder than the SNES version. You can't speed boost or space jump your way past them. In this game, you either have to freeze them or kill them. Same goes for a most enemies in this game.
Holy shit, never realized how long this game is. Emulated it very recently and played for the first time, thought I got far...
I'm at the 6 minute mark in the video.
Speedruns are impressive, but nothing says nostalgia like a good old playthrough.

"I recently watched all the Alien movies again and it made me want to play the Metroid games."
there's a Xenomorph fight in AM2R
Pedro Sepulveda the games were inspired by the Alien series
Although it had a smaller map, this game actually took me longer to complete than Super Metroid for a few reasons. No in-game map, no save points, no health replenishment upon death (so a lot of time is spent farming), limited firing angles so navigating rooms with enemies can get pretty tricky, rooms that look identical to one another, and no run button or speed boosts!!!! STILL LOVE IT THOUGH!!!
Despite so many rooms being identical, I had no trouble finding my way because I played zero mission before. I mostly was annoyed to fight/avoid the same ennemies over and over. I took the time to complete it 100%, but personnally, I didn't really have fun. It's the worst Metroid *I've played*.
When i FINALLY completed this Game in the summer of '88??? My entire Neighborhood labeled me, Mr. Nintendo! Later on that year...Rygar. Spring of '89...Karnov. 😎
I remember getting pissed off over this game. Hell, at times in this video I'm like C'mon That's bulllshit!. xD
i'm playing it on switch and bro fr sometimes this game pissed me off so bad how ppl could have enjoyed that before xD
16:37 you've got everything you need to get your Varia suit. You can lay bombs, exit morph-ball, and use the bomb blast to jump from, essentially giving you high jump equivalency. All you need are bombs and missiles (and a bit of patience) to sequence break the Varia suit.
And now Metroid Dreasd has arrive, and it's a Masterpiece!
I love that the beginning area is re-created in Super Metroid. Just noticed that when playing today.
Never beat this game as a kid. had absolutely no idea where to go.

I beat this game back in the late 80's. No map (except what I drew in a notebook). No guide. No saves. It was much easier to have that patience when you had 1-2 games a year at most.
Super genial!!!! Tenía 20 años que no jugaba Metroid, y ahora ya estoy en lo final y no puedo pasar 😭😭😭, seguiré intentando.
Thumbs up, watched the whole thing. Thanx for the upload..... 8 years ago.
thank you for doing this video, had a small detail that went unnoticed, without the video I would not notice!
The Metroid Experience: Notebook paper maps. Communal exchanges between family, friends, and friends' parents who also gamed. Memory retention from nintendo power in the supermarket if it wasn't sealed up in the plastic sheath. Brutal trial and error. Getting bored of other games. Having this game work consistently when you put it into the console. Spirit of exploration. Watching older brother play. Using the systems glitches to give you a slight edge. Going in a room, seeing the green or red flying pods and immediately going back the other way. Hand blisters and wore out nes controller buttons. Rage quitting. Years later kissing super metroids feet.
You can tell the games that they actually put care into. The pleasing graphics, the inspired music, the creative problem-solving. Metroid was second only to Zelda
Zelda? What's that game, again?

Oh my good god! The MEMORIES!!
Played it first time when I was 5 I think with ny older brother. Remember the ”infinite” labyrinths and scary music in the items room. The infinite loops of some areas and the codes we wrote down on paper. Have not played it since. Fun to see a full run as well as compoete maps online. Super Metroid Ive played again and again over the years.
Gotta give it to the devs though. Exploration and mystics are really great in the game
Yes. The item rooms were especially terrifying. And going thru the maze like areas of Norfair and Kraids Lair was brutal
54:33 my god the brinstar depths theme was sort of ahead of it's time I miss this old version of it though so nostalgic they should've added it to Smash Bros Ultimate
I agree. I think that the Lair 2, Ridley's lair is even more difficult than Kraid's lair 1, those balls of death, twice as many bat creatures from the ceiling, and how fast and close together those bugs fly out at you. Kraid's lair has that too, but it looked that they flew out even faster and closer together in Ridley's lair.
@@alvexok5523 I always liked going to Ridley's lair first. Better powerups. I had a harder time with Kraid's lair.

I played this game a lot back in the years, but I didn't know this secret! This game keeps surprising me many years later.
I played a game like this about 15 years ago. I am not very sure that this was the game because when I was playing it back then, it had another sense. It was more realistic and scary and hard. It seems like video games were tougher to conquer in the 1980's, and the music with the timed boards could shake one's concentration.
