Hi Federico, well done! I’m happy with my 2017 rim brake road bike tarmac, built the way I like it and love riding it. I do have a gravel bike as well, that one came with disc brakes. I do not race and see no reason to replace my rim brake bike, unless specialized have me a free swap, spec for spec which will not happen of course. Upgrading to the latest will cost $$$ significantly, think I’ll stay with my setup’s. “Hang strong Canyon, yes rim braking is cool … RESPECT”!
I'm still running mechanical Ultegra 6800 GS with R8000 Rim brakes on my 2017 Tarmac & 2015 TCR. To be honest I couldn't give a fig what GCN think, they are now just a bike industry marketing tool. If your bike works & gets you where you want to be then why change anything! 😊
I completely agree with you - I love my “old” 2014 rim brake, Trek Domane. Many of us can’t afford to stay up with GCN’s latest and greatest recommendations.
I watch their videos as an entertainment guys. You cannot expect impartial reviews and texts when you see “contains promotions” all the time on the top of the screen. You cannot take someones money and then be IMPARTIAL to their products, especially if the contract states so…
This was fun and it was good that you reassured your Old Tech Bikes that they were not entirely over the hill. I enjoy GCN (and especially GCN+) but I essentially ignore the sponsored technology parts. I have 11 road bikes, build from a 1975 Rickert to a custom Tommasini built in 2014 and am perfectly happy with them. There has always been a disconnect between the cycling industry, which in the last two decades has been pushing new tech hard (whereas before there wasn't much difference between a 1957 bike and a 1987 one) when in fact most people don't race. I laugh at the obsession with "aero," which, as you have noted, is far more influenced by the rider's position than the bike, so we have ads that brag that a pro cyclist in the wind tunnel demonstrates a 7W saving at 48 km/h on the latest $8000 frame. WIth electronic shifting, disc brakes and tubeless tires (and, in some cases, suspension), the industry has added cost, complexity and weight to the simple bicycle and with the rise of e-bikes the transition to quasi-motorcycles is well underway. I am certain that bicycles can last pretty much forever (a problem for manufacturers, of course) but never lose sight that the engine is more important than the bike!
@@fede1275 Thanks! An even dozen is better so on Monday I will take delivery of an immaculate 1998 Colnago C40 Mk II. So you can see why I don't care what GCN says I should buy! But I do like their documentaries--the newest one is on some amazing collections.
Hey! It's my first time to watch your videos. Actually here in the Philippines, most of the Road bikes breaking system are rim brakes, even if it's an Aero or Endurance bike. Even the Pro's use rim brakes here, because Filipino Cyclists are weight obsessed 😂.
@@fede1275 The bike markets here in the Philippines are mostly in demand of rim brake frames. I think having cable actuated disc brakes or hydraulic ones is to inconvient for the riders here. And it's too expensive to maintain disc brakes, from brake pads, to mineral oil to contaminated rotors. But then again, it all depends on the bike user which braking system they'd choose. Undeniably, Philippines is for Rim Brakes 😂
Seems a bit silly to get worked up over a headline and not look into what an article, or video in this case, is actually saying. They comment on the trend away from making very light bikes including the trend towards disc brakes much like the recent video on this channel. They also mention heavier tubeless setups gaining traction because the lower resistance makes up for the increased weight in many cases. The one issue I might have with the segment is that it focusses on professional level equipment and doesn't pay much attention to price or how much of a hassle setup may be (for tubeless). That being said, it is about a two and a half minute segment so I can't fault them too much for not providing all the possible caveats.
I gave up on GCN a long time ago, it was much better when it was just Matt, Simon and Dan. Now it seems they only want to promote what the bike industry tells them and if it’s not the latest bit of tech it’s crap and not cool. The sad thing judging by the amount of people you see riding the latest gear is that for the majority of viewers they really are trend setters.
I miss Matt on GCN. And John Cunings, such treasure trove of information about old bikes. I gues John shoot himself in the foot when he asked Hambini to to guest in one episode.
A ton of people still think that rim brakes are great. For me keeping it simple on my road bike is most important! Let's face it, a rim brake bike that's light without Di2 electrical gears AND still use tubes in clincher tires is perfect!!! Specially the (great tubes) that have better rolling resistance is a perfect match. You see nowadays with all the hype going on in the companies they tend to shove new technology down our throats. Even many pro pelotón Riders are forced to use disc brakes. I might also add that if I were to go down Alp Dues every training session I may consider the use of them... So, rim brakes are still very cool, only that I personally wouldn't use them on a carbon rim, especially when there are top of the line alloy wheels which are very strong AND very light, compared to the carbon rims. Not to mention the crazy price point they carry. Been watching GCN forever it seems and I've also have learnt quite a bit from them but was surprised at that (crappy brake) comment as well lol.
CGN has their thumb on scale for whatever it is that the manufacturers want to sell. It’s all about getting us to keep buying new stuff. That said, they do have some beautiful jerseys!
I love my rim brake Ultimate, best bike I've owned and hope to get many years out of it. In regards to GCN I used to watch a lot of their content but I've outgrown it now and rarely tune in. In saying that I think they are good for the budding cyclist and their training videos aren't too bad. Once you are into the sport for awhile you'll find your feet and start realising that they are backed by the bicycle industry don't really offer an independent view.
what is the point if your area is flat surface or small hill. rim brake bike can do their duty, no need to buy more expensive and 1 kg heavier disc brake bike
I have a local mountain cat 2 climb which I ride 2-3 times a week with my Ultimate disc. Discs really made a difference on descent, my hands are much less fatigued at the end. And bike is even 1 kg lighter (CF) then my old rim brake bike (alu). But for flats or rolling hills, rim brakes are just fine. As long as they keep producing spare parts for all brake types we will all be ok 😁
In area where a live in Poland (nearby the capital) it's pancake flat. So I really don't need Disk brakes. I will tell more - I love how easy maintenance is. And how quickly I can remove the front wheel before packing the bike to my car (Quick release!). But as you said - you can't buy a reasonable bike on rim brakes... So my new bike will have to be on Disk brakes and will see what kind of relationship we will build.... BTW: My "new bike day" is going to be this week 😀
I have a 2019 Canyon Ultimate with rim brakes and I love it. The bike industry would love to have us all get rid of our rimmers and by discs. One reason I have rim brakes: easy maintenance, it's a no-brainer. BTW I bought a new Giant TCR with...you guessed it, RIM brakes back in January. I love my rimmers, I'm not buy a disc brake bike. Period.
I was also looking at a TCR when I bought the Ultimate. Should be a great bike indeed. I like my Merida Scultura 200 disc as it's a great value and I use it in bad weather commutes.
Nothing wrong with rim brakes got a old Tarmac SL2 with rim brakes and still love riding it to me it looks great also got a Diverge with disc brakes great if it is wet but now having a new bike built for me and it's titanium with rim brakes . I'm getting older and retired now so don't need to ride in the rain anymore the rim breaks will save weight and money also to me they look better and that is important.
Thank you for making this video. Just built a light weight 2022 Winspace SLC 2.0 Direct Mount brake setup. Love it, rides like a dream. As you mentioned, GCN’s earlier content was educational and balanced. Now, F-ing clowns spewing nonsense. They beat you down little by little to convince you it’s the norm...
I have a cannondale supersix evo rim brake fitted with shimano 105 groupset 2 bottle cages and inner tubes which weigh 7.5 kg. Costs me less than 1.5k usd. Now compare that with the "new" bikes which cost double/triple/quadruple the price. The argument is the new bike is much more faster/aero, better braking system, more "compliant" and can fit wider tires. But the reality is, for average riders those marginal gains can only be felt IF you are riding >30km/hr, aero bike fit, AND you're physically on par with the top cyclist. Therefore, for those who ride their bikes purely for commuting or leisure rides the rim brakes are more than enough with a fraction of the cost. For racing it would still depend on the cyclist fitness and ofcourse budget. So I agree that the approach of GCN has been a bit "promotional"
I agree with you 100%, Federico. With this kind of attitude, gcn are becoming exclusionary and elitist. They are also very disparaging towards classic/vintage bicycles and technology, which some of us are still enthusiastic and nostalgic for, if not fanatics of. Gcn are at risk of losing their credibility as a provider of reliable and impartial opinion and information. Now, I'm off to ride my supercool canyon ultimate with rim brakes 👌
As long as you’re happy that’s all that matters. There are bike riders out there on all different budgets and preferences. It doesn’t matter what you ride or wear as long as you’re out riding. You’re doing more than people sitting around and while riding you’re burning fat not oil which is good for the environment. Thanks Federico for another interesting video 👍
I agree with your comments. I got my first adult rim break road bike a rear ago, a nice black Felt and have no complaints, no adjustments needed in 2200km. Maybe you should start a rival channel, the FCM, the M for movement, just to prevent any trademark issues ☺️.
Good stuff! I happen to like both the discs and the rim brakes - but it will be a shame when the rim brakes are completely gone from NEW offerings. I think GCN still does a great job all things considered.
I have both braking systems. Yes, disc,s are more effective, but my rim brakes still stop the bike. Can you realy say that disc brakes look better? Just something about that classic style.
I never owned anything else than a Scott, Scot spark 940, scot speedster 10, scott aspect 910...but im thinking about getting canyon Endurace 7, i just love the design and price of their bikes.
A couple of years ago I rode a bike with disc brakes I borrowed from a friend of mine. Back then I was sceptic about disc brakes but the confidence they gave me when riding down a couple of fast descents full of tight corners was enough to change my mind and convince me that my next bike would have disc brakes. I'm now a happy owner of a bike with disc brakes and I dont look back. But this is to tell that I made my mind based on my personal experience, no matter what the market says. There's a lot of fuff about the weight but we should be talking about brakes only when they really matters and that is on tough descents or in emergency braking conditions.
Absolutely, I might do exactly the same, who knows. I am not against discs per se, I'm just not happy not to have the choice anymore going forward and the unnecessary talk down of old tech.
On a side note: I'm at my second order with Siroko using your link (my third overall). This time I went for one more m2 jersey, the Aspen bib and two pairs of socks. I see you almost always wearing stuff from their top line SRX. What's your experience with the more affordable products sitting at the bottom end of the price range?
@@robertosantoro9685 thank you! I will do a video now that I have more kit to compare. The cheaper kit is really good as well, maybe the fabric is not as soft as the SRX ones, but good quality. I am in between sizes with the M2 and M3 jerseys, so I go for M. For SRX I go for L. With bibs is the same, softer fabric and Miti pad for SRX, but the normal pad is okay as well. I just done 80Km today with the grey bibs, really like to change colours from black. Got the blue ones as well.
Great video, GCN is very much sponsored content pushing the most expensive tech and bikes. I have a rim brake bike and a disc brake one, I prefer the rim brake bike less maintenance and it is a lower spec. Keep up the great work 👏👍🚴♂️
Your “uncool” rim brake canyon ultimate is the bike I dreamed about when I started getting more serious about cycling back in 2017, and it still is my dream bike. The lightweight rim brake bikes with their simple tube shapes and sleek elegance was what I hoped to be riding, and I’ve bought my first road bike back in 2021 (the cheapest specialized allez) which does its best to honor the older tech. Don’t listen to gcn for anything other than entertainment, they’re in their sponsored, industry trend hopping world, and you’re on a killer bike that can still put down the power and munch those miles. I salute you 🫡
The bicycle industry and the disc brake collective is shit, stopped paying attention a while ago, I just feel sorry for the new cyclist who want to try different handle bar and stem combos like I did when I was starting out, cables were so simple compared to hydraulics…
Disc brakes is just like a new kid in the block and now everyone is going for it. Still alot of testing to be done on it. My opinion, rim brakes is still the best.
Great vid once again ✊🏾. I love my rim brake bike and it has never failed me in over 30 years but we must understand that GCN are sponsored by many of these ‘Disc brake’ pushing corporations so they have a vested interest in ‘bigging up’ the disc brake and slapping down rim brakes (££££££££). I have no doubt that disc brakes provide better stopping power but it doesn’t mean rim brakes are rubbish. I use to really like GCN but now they’ve just become the elitist corporate money focused machine 👎🏾 Should we all get rid of our cars because some of them have rear drum brakes instead of 4 wheel disc brakes?? Likewise should we all get rid of our petrol/diesel vehicles and get spanking new electric cars even if we can’t afford them as we all know new must mean better right?!?! It’s all about making money!
GCN was cool before it was commercialized to the max. The main guys left, some new kids remained, and everything is for the money. Well, they probably started it for the money, but still. I left GCN two years ago (or more).
I saw this and messaged gcn and Bridgewater tbf bridgewater did reply and said.... "and i’m not presenting just in the thumbnail i’ve always given honest opinion on disc and rim. neither is perfect" But I did reply back saying GCN has lost touch with cyclists it's now just about adverts, paid promotions and selling us stuff we don't need... He has seen the message but didn't reply. I've personally had 2 bikes both 2019 TCRs 1 disc and another rim. Much prefer the rim brake model I actually sold the disc tcr on 😂
Thank you! Yes, actually it's the thumbnail that was badly written, clearly a click bait. The TCR should be a fantastic bike, was so close to get one as it's similar to my Ultimate.
Also not everyone can afford or justify buying the latest gear. I'm your age, quite competitive in my age group but nothing special. I have a wife and kids, so I can't justify a new bike with no real performance gain than the one I've got. Which is 7.4kgs (without pedals) deep dish wheels and box section alloys for hilly/wet rides. Buying a similar spec would be over $6grand easy for a bike no better so just doesn't make sense. I've been riding bikes since a kid in the '70's and never had an issue with rim brakes. And yes they're not that great in the rain on the carbons in the descents. So if wet I usually leave them at home(to save the rims and bearings) and ride the training bike. It's not that hard! Of course the bike industry wants to make you feel uncool, silly, and "behind the times" for not shelling out 6grand+ on a new bike no better than the one u've got. But then I like being able to adjust my brakes on the fly, not have to worry about rotors rubbing. And also I like how I can fix/ adjust 90% of anything on my bike without having to take it to a bike shop. Now that to me is cool! Who cares what GCN (or the neighbours) think.
Yes, that's exactly how I also set up my use of the bikes I have. I am sure new bikes are great, but for my personal use I believe this approach is the best cost vs performance ratio I can get.
Federico, as you know, GCN creates content daily, bikes are fascinating, but a new angle everyday? Also they are in the business of clicks, they got you biting hard on the bait this time. Love your sense of humor, and sarcasm. I am commuting daily on a bike with a French treaded BB, and square tapered cranks, what would they think? Cheers.
I have a 6 year old Canyon Endurace which has rim brakes and is very lightweight but not aero. However, I live in a very hilly place and also for me lightweight trumps aero gains, especially as at my age I'm definitely not going to be breaking any records. I think it's pretty undisputable that disc brakes are better than rim brakes overall, especially in the wet but a well maintained rim brake bike with good components is still very good. No doubt marketing has played a massive role in the move to disc brakes and whilst I do watch GCN videos, they are heavily biased towards tech they are sponsored by. Consumers should be able to have choice and these days it's becoming increasingly harder to have a bike with rim brakes plus a lot are also going for the aero look which inevitably is heavier. My Canyon is 7kg which suits me fine!
I agree with you mate, people has its own preference, and of course budget limitation, for people who wanna have fun in cycling no need to have the latest update for their bikes, as long as they are comfort with wha they have and they enjoy it, who cares...
I've literally bought a new bike with rim brakes they are better I find they have more feel are lighter and don't squeal and as a bonus you can swap pads in like 2 minutes discs on a road bike are ugly also not a fan.
disc brake bike is heavy a lot of moderate disc brake bike around 2,500 pound is like 8.6 kg inc. pedal and bike computer you can buy rim brake bike with 7.6 kg inc pedal, bike’s computer only 2k pound and weight still lighter 1 kg
I agree ,wether it's cool or not cool is frankly irrelevant as bikes now are designed to look cool around the intergration of disc brakes ,the argument should be more do they work better or not and from my point yeah disc are little better if you have a hydrolic system, cable not gonna make much difference only to rim wear,I have hydrolic disc on my gravel bike, stop really well on off road trail's but also been riding rim brakes for ages on a normal road bikes and with good compound shoes they stop really well to on the road also if your unlucky to get a puncture it's really easy and had same on gravel bike and got brake rub which was annoying but one important thing is you get to know your bike ,it's capabilities and it's handling characteristics
Great Fede! I have a Bianchi xr3 rim brake and I'll keep rim brakes for ever... but we know in what direction we''re pushed. Plainly stupid. GCN was great, learn a lot but now is, not only commercial, but puerile.
I enjoy GCN for what it is but don’t take it too seriously. They’re not the coolest themselves really are they?! Corporate sell outs but I suppose that’s what pays to create the content. Your bikes are great keep getting out and enjoying it 👍
Honestly mate, the GCN show is not able to comment or what’s cool or not, these boys are far from cool 😂😂 This is about the the manufacturers that sponsor the show stopping production of rim brake bikes. And a push to get you to buy a new bike. How about we think about the environment, continued consumption especially of carbon fibre which is not recycle able is not cool as we all know from a couple of weeks ago. Being different is cool, not being part of the heard is cool, being good to the plant is even cooler !!! (I have carbon bikes and wheels, plus a steel and alloy, I’m just not going buy new again and less frequently) Cheers Jonny
You are right, I just reacted as they could still go with their line without mocking the bikes with older tech. I understand they have to push sponsored content and I can live with that, but my Ultimates were upset 😄
Don't waste your time with GCN. It's a sponsored channel, with it's only purpose to sell the latest products. GCN no longer has anything to do with cycling.
@@fede1275 Absolutely. Their earlier content was without sponsorship. Lol. Well, the analytics don't lie. It's nothing to do with the bike, it's the person on it that counts. Let's have a great day, on our crappy bikes :0)
Except for Ollie, all the other presenters are ex-pros. So, there thought process would always incline to the latest and the best, basically whatever the Pro Peloton follows and uses. If you observe, up untill last TdF, they were ok with Rim Brakes. Now, they are justifying why Disc brakes are better. Their content is majorly Racing oriented, because that's what they have been doing. For mere mortals like us, just ride what you love.
Yes, definitely that is also one of the reason. I would be happy to use the latest tech myself, I’m not religiously attached to rim, I just can’t justify for my use the big budget needed for it.
@@fede1275 I'm myself a guy on a Decathlon bike.😁 So, I totally understand that feeling. Being 10 kgs over my optimal weight, I also can't justify myself getting a higer end bike. Might be in a year or two, I might think about it. As for the disc brakes, if someone who stays in hills, with the 13-15 kms of downhill. Disc brake does help. Specially when it's wet and muddy, or even extremely dusty. 😜
Federico, these guys are running out of things to talk about. What they SHOULD be discussing is how it's the RIDER that makes the bike cool or not. And you are right up there with Elvis.
Exactly that! It is advertorials with a few exceptions. Few days ago they released a video on skin cancer and cycling. I was waiting for them to promote some fancy sunscreen made exclussively for cyclists that cost 50 pounds.
@@fede1275 Hi Federico.yes you are absolutely right. It is similar with many youtube channels. As they starts to grow, they become more commercial and it is sad. Great job, keep going 👍.
By the way I posted a poll in some facebook cycling groups about what is preferred, rim brakes or disc brakes....and in one group on 'Innovation in Cycling' out of about 172 cyclists voting...the result was 48% for RIM BRAKES and 52% for DISC BRAKES...so clearly the elimination of rim brakes by manufacturers and retailers is not justified, as there are probably hundreds of millions of cyclists who still prefer them for various reasons.
Times change Fede. Today is Rim brakes. Very soon will be clinchers and tubulars that will be mocked. And in the future pretty sure that they will laugh at any road bike without electronic shifting.
GCN guys often remind me the guys from TOP GEAR. There are times that they want to compare everything. They are obsessed with technology, but technology isn't always the issue. For me road bike equals to rim breakes. Disc breaks are for gravel and mtb. You have a great bike!
When Alex & Ollie are presenting GCN I just don't watch them. GCN is not as good as it used to be and what they are saying is all bikes with rim brakes are crap, then their views are irrelevant. Federico just stick with what you like 👍 Love your channel - one of my Favourites👍
Hi Federico, I guess people are tired of getting ripped off for aero bikes that cost thousands of euros. Those who have an "old" light and performing bike do not sell it and do not change it. Marketing....they probably have to find new and creative ways to sell?
Lightweight is still better. The only reason they're pushing the heavier tubeless tires, disc brakes, and heavier electronic groupsets is because Shimano and Sram need to make more money. They won't tell everyone "be happy with what you have" they want you to always buy the next best thing.
At least for my use of the bike light it's better. I understand for long descends and wet weather discs are better and also some prefer a lighter lever when braking. Definitely more complications allow for higher prices.
I could see that, but I don't have the technical ability or experience to then say that discs are not good. I want to even assume they are better, I don't really want to enter that argument. I just hoped rim brakes could stay because they fit my bike use and also my budget, that's it.
££££ - they have to punt what they are paid to promote - the big brands are all major sponsors - now they are mainstream too (Eurosport), so even more bias than ever before 😔 - cool video 👏
Rim breaks are still working now.. and it will be working.🤙 When my friend upgraded his bike especially with breaks I asked him - Why did you buy a bike for riding or for breaking? 🙂
Also, if GCN declared your bicycle "Not cool" it not so likely to be worth stealing. That is if the thieves check with GCN's bicycle shopping criteria.
I like gcn vids. They are an easy watch and pretty good for road cycling beginners. However they raised my eyebrow with recent video where Ollie gets 1000£ (sponsored) Canyon and pimps it out by replacing groupset with Dura-ace (sponsored) and is going to replace wheels with carbon rims (sponsored). Someone in comment section suggested that for this type of video they should upgrade subscriber bike. And I am 100% agreeing with this statement. Otherwise...what is the effing point apart from stupid advertisement?
I saw that too!! Nobody would fit Dura Ace on an aluminium bike, even some racing teams use Ultegra for keeping the costs down. Completely missed the point. Wheels however are a good upgrade at any level, 50mm deep they really help the performance.
@@fede1275 exactly. I could see a point of slapping dura-ace on a 1k bike if it was sponsored content of upgrading some random subscriber bike. Some form of give away. Great add for Shimano and gcn. But if they do it...just because they can...it is the dumbest thing ever 🤣
I like GCN, but I'm conscious that they cannot help but be driven by the industry. They are not alone. Why do we see the Tour de France peloton dragging the extra weight of disc brakes up mountains :-) Recently, I went to a sportive and as I'd seen so many videos showing "the death of rim brakes" and why they were so "crap", I expected to be one of the few still on rim brakes there. Not the case at all! Discs were the minority. It's sad that soon the paying customer simply won't get a choice when buying a new bike.
@@marccale9890 I would still give more emphasis on the weather conditions, wet braking is superior on discs and if you want to ride one bike all year round the choice is clear. For descending you still need good technique not to push the braking system limits in both cases.
Federico, take the cool option and unsubscribe from GCN, I stopped watching it when Matt Stephens left and now they’re basically the nerds of cycling. GCN is like watching paint dry! 😴
@@fede1275 I now prefer a good rant from Hambini or discussion from Wanyos Fotos - at least they know what they’re talking about! Also Trace Velo from the alternatives perspective.
No such thing as cool or uncool, it just is. In my opinion GCN preach inclusivity but mock $100 bicycles by comparing them to $15,000. They are just salesmen peddling more than cycling. My father purchased my first road bicycle for me when I was 16 from Sears in 1987. It weighed easily 35 lbs. it made me a better cyclist by far. Don’t be bothered by GCN, just a bunch of hacks. Also, the day I need to bleed my road bicycles brakes is the day I buy a Honda Accord. The beauty of the bicycle is it’s simplicity and utility.
I know, I still want to like them, especially Si and Dan. But I just managed to calm down my Canyon Ultimates 😄, so hopefully no more mocking from GCN!
Who cares what GCN or anyone else for that matter thinks about your bike, all that matters is what you think. I think your bike is awesome, if you love riding it that’s all that matters. I still love my 10 yr old road bike & feel no need to even think about wasting $ on a new disc brake bike
GCN is just acting stupid. The rider that claimed the polkadot jersey at the first stage of the TDF Femmes sprinted to the line along the Champs Elysee riding a rim brake bike, beating the other riders on more aero disc brake bikes, by a couple of bike lengths. And it wasn't an ascent to the line.
Manufacturers may at some point question way some vote with their feet and wallets. Cyclist need to find a voice; some of us still prefer light weight, rim brake bikes.
Exactly! I like my disc Merida for the winter commute, I just found not nice the mocking stance.

Hey! It's my first time to watch your videos. Actually here in the Philippines, most of the Road bikes breaking system are rim brakes, even if it's an Aero or Endurance bike. Even the Pro's use rim brakes here, because Filipino Cyclists are weight obsessed 😂.
Wow, I wonder how they are still able to find new bikes!!
@@z3nooo815 might need to come and shop for another bike 😂😂
@@fede1275 Hahaha there's no other way 😂
Seems a bit silly to get worked up over a headline and not look into what an article, or video in this case, is actually saying.
Of course it is silly, I hope I did not come out too serious. Or if I did I hope they offer me a bike as compensation LOL!!
Maybe we are getting old 😂
@@fede1275 yes, I am 45 now and bit of a miserable sod🤣
I miss Matt on GCN. And John Cunings, such treasure trove of information about old bikes. I gues John shoot himself in the foot when he asked Hambini to to guest in one episode.
@@TenSapphires yes, Jon and Matt were great on GCN!
Lol my medium tier level bike got insulted in the Reddit forums, lol lots of snobs
👍👍
I like your shorts, what brand are they? Ps I think your bike is cool 😍
Thank you, they are from Siroko, all the info in the video description! My Ultimate is very cool indeed 😄😄
CGN has their thumb on scale for whatever it is that the manufacturers want to sell. It’s all about getting us to keep buying new stuff. That said, they do have some beautiful jerseys!
Pure joy! Good stuff! Cheers from bavaria!
Of course, makes sense.
Great, let me know what you get!
Absolutely 👍
Thank you for making this video.
Just built a light weight 2022 Winspace SLC 2.0 Direct Mount brake setup.
Love it, rides like a dream.
As you mentioned, GCN’s earlier content was educational and balanced. Now, F-ing clowns spewing nonsense. They beat you down little by little to convince you it’s the norm...
Wow, must be a great bike!!
Yes, you have a great bike. I could live with the promotion, less with the increasing disapproval of the older tech
Nice bike 😄😄
As long as you’re happy that’s all that matters. There are bike riders out there on all different budgets and preferences. It doesn’t matter what you ride or wear as long as you’re out riding. You’re doing more than people sitting around and while riding you’re burning fat not oil which is good for the environment. Thanks Federico for another interesting video 👍
Absolutely!
I agree with your comments. I got my first adult rim break road bike a rear ago, a nice black Felt and have no complaints, no adjustments needed in 2200km. Maybe you should start a rival channel, the FCM, the M for movement, just to prevent any trademark issues ☺️.
🤔 it's an idea 😄😂
I never owned anything else than a Scott, Scot spark 940, scot speedster 10, scott aspect 910...but im thinking about getting canyon Endurace 7, i just love the design and price of their bikes.
last years tour de france was won on a rim brake bike. the mountain stages anyway.
I know, but at the same time I understand the industry has changed. Just don't upset my Ultimates 😄
@@fede1275 I understand. The only thing I can tell you is just try them and you will never look at things like weight, aesthetics etc anymore
Hi Federico, I'm still winning on my rim brake bike. I don't like disc brake. Your cool Sir and your bike is beautiful
Well done!
Rim brake user here and no problems.
Great video, GCN is very much sponsored content pushing the most expensive tech and bikes. I have a rim brake bike and a disc brake one, I prefer the rim brake bike less maintenance and it is a lower spec. Keep up the great work 👏👍🚴♂️
Yes, both bikes and systems have their own characteristics. Just don't upset my Ultimates 😄😂
I salute you 🫡
Thank you 👍 👍
Good comments. All bikes are cool. My 1986 Schwann Paramount gets more good comments than my Italian Disc Bike!
my rim brake Pinarello is my first choice.... the disc brake is for the severe downhill where rim brakes will cause overheating.
I guess good braking technique is required in both cases. I prefer to be cautious anyway on descends.
Sorry disc
Sorry disc
Don't worry, your bike is nice it's not looking like a ugly space ship 😊👍🏻👍🏻

Nice video, I fully agree with you!
I use to really like GCN but now they’ve just become the elitist corporate money focused machine 👎🏾
Should we all get rid of our cars because some of them have rear drum brakes instead of 4 wheel disc brakes?? Likewise should we all get rid of our petrol/diesel vehicles and get spanking new electric cars even if we can’t afford them as we all know new must mean better right?!?! It’s all about making money!
Yes, I can live with the new tech push, I understand things have changed, but no slapping down!
GCN was cool before it was commercialized to the max. The main guys left, some new kids remained, and everything is for the money. Well, they probably started it for the money, but still. I left GCN two years ago (or more).
I saw this and messaged gcn and Bridgewater tbf bridgewater did reply and said....
"and i’m not presenting just in the thumbnail
i’ve always given honest opinion on disc and rim. neither is perfect"
But I did reply back saying GCN has lost touch with cyclists it's now just about adverts, paid promotions and selling us stuff we don't need...
Cheers.
Yes, you are right 👍
I have a 6 year old Canyon Endurace which has rim brakes and is very lightweight but not aero.
Excellent analysis!
I agree with you mate, people has its own preference, and of course budget limitation, for people who wanna have fun in cycling no need to have the latest update for their bikes, as long as they are comfort with wha they have and they enjoy it, who cares...
👍 👍
That was awesome - love the rant 🙂
😄😄
Getting out for a ride on a bike you've got is cool, watching GCN is uncool and is a thing of the past :D
Agree! They recently launched a big survey, they are trying to understand what they need to do next 😂
Kettlebell swings man...will be fun do a video
Never used them, I'm a traditionalist gym user!
I've literally bought a new bike with rim brakes they are better I find they have more feel are lighter and don't squeal and as a bonus you can swap pads in like 2 minutes discs on a road bike are ugly also not a fan.
disc brake bike is heavy
a lot of moderate disc brake bike around 2,500 pound is like 8.6 kg inc. pedal and bike computer
you can buy rim brake bike with 7.6 kg inc pedal, bike’s computer only 2k pound and weight still lighter 1 kg
That is also my view, at the same time I don't want to deny the benefit of discs. Unfortunately there is no choice anymore.
Rim Brakes For Life!!
😄
Rim brakes for the win, and 10 speed mechanical=no skipping 1/2 gears due to extra gears in that same cassette tight spacing..
I know, that's not what the majority of customers want it seems.
GCN the Disc Brake Desperado’s!! I prefer Sesame Street.
😂😂
Very well said!
Canyon bikes are all very 😎 Soon with how prices are going up we be riding Halford Carrera bikes.
Great Fede! I have a Bianchi xr3 rim brake and I'll keep rim brakes for ever... but we know in what direction we''re pushed. Plainly stupid. GCN was great, learn a lot but now is, not only commercial, but puerile.
Great bike!!
I enjoy GCN for what it is but don’t take it too seriously. They’re not the coolest themselves really are they?! Corporate sell outs but I suppose that’s what pays to create the content. Your bikes are great keep getting out and enjoying it 👍
Thank you! I will accept a new tech bike from them if they want to sent me one though 😂
They seem to be changing the tone too much lately. I actually like them, maybe more the earlier content.

Cheers Stuart!!
GCN says anything for a dollar you should just block and ignore them
Fair enough, don't have anything against promotion, as long as they don't talk down other bikes.
The biggest thing about a bike is that it gets ridden. Who cares what anyone else thinks about a bike you enjoy riding.
👍 👍
GCN is nothing more than a hodgepodge of corporate sponsored advertisements disguised as entertaining bicycle content.
I know, I actually like the earlier videos, now a bit less.

Luckily 99% of riding a bike is about movement - not braking ;)
Very well said.
Well apparently you seem to be clueless but that seems to be a regular feature of Roadies in Lyra...🤣🤦♂️
Times change Fede. Today is Rim brakes. Very soon will be clinchers and tubulars that will be mocked. And in the future pretty sure that they will laugh at any road bike without electronic shifting.
Yes, and when they do a cheap bike upgrade feature they fit Dura Ace on an aluminium bike 😄
GCN guys often remind me the guys from TOP GEAR. There are times that they want to compare everything. They are obsessed with technology, but technology isn't always the issue. For me road bike equals to rim breakes. Disc breaks are for gravel and mtb. You have a great bike!
Absolutely! Thank you!
When Alex & Ollie are presenting GCN I just don't watch them.
GCN is not as good as it used to be and what they are saying is all bikes with rim brakes are crap, then their views are irrelevant.
Federico just stick with what you like 👍 Love your channel - one of my Favourites👍
Yes, I could live with praising discs, but I don't understand why now they have to bash rims
Ever thought of going tubeless?
Not yet, I am still for simple clincher set up.
Hiya Federico keep doing your thing I have 2 bikes both Bianchi one ride, one disc, going forward disc is cool but rim is still very cool 😎 🙏🏿
Well said 👍👍
Hi Federico, I guess people are tired of getting ripped off for aero bikes that cost thousands of euros. Those who have an "old" light and performing bike do not sell it and do not change it. Marketing....they probably have to find new and creative ways to sell?
In general, those who follow GCN recommendations will become unhappy bikers
I'm surprised there are still people talking GCN seriously 🤣🤣
I actually learned a lot from their earlier videos, pity for the latest change in tone.
Durianrider would agree with you. He talks a lot of sense, although he can be OTT and too focused on provoking.
Yes, I don't mind the commercial as it's very obvious. I didn't like the talking down on older tech.
Rim breaks are still working now.. and it will be working.🤙
When my friend upgraded his bike especially with breaks I asked him - Why did you buy a bike for riding or for breaking? 🙂
Also, if GCN declared your bicycle "Not cool" it not so likely to be worth stealing. That is if the thieves check with GCN's bicycle shopping criteria.
🤞🤞🤞
Tell your bike Joe side your bike is very cool... and that is coming from NY.
Thank you Joe, well appreciated!!!
@@fede1275 My Dura Ace equipped rim brake Allez Sprint takes offence.....
@@st3rius 😖 you are right! I apologise unreservedly!
I understand, just don’t talk down the old tech. Will Smith would say “get my bike’s name off your f mouth” 😂😂
@@fede1275 Ha ha! Unless people are regularly descending mountains "Pidcock-style", no-one needs disc brakes on a road bike.
@@marccale9890 I would still give more emphasis on the weather conditions, wet braking is superior on discs and if you want to ride one bike all year round the choice is clear. For descending you still need good technique not to push the braking system limits in both cases.
GCN and GMBN both kinda hold the company lines, they stay with the mainstream popular viewpoints or whatever is current. 🤙
Yes, bit of the nature of big budget channels.
Federico, take the cool option and unsubscribe from GCN, I stopped watching it when Matt Stephens left and now they’re basically the nerds of cycling.

Maybe they are resorting to Big Brother tactics!👀🕵️♂️

False. He just got a script to ensure his paycheck comes in. -Not education.
I know and I can understand actually. But don't offend my bike, should be more respectful 😄
Such problems I want have😄
GCN is just acting stupid.
The rider that claimed the polkadot jersey at the first stage of the TDF Femmes sprinted to the line along the Champs Elysee riding a rim brake bike, beating the other riders on more aero disc brake bikes, by a couple of bike lengths.
And it wasn't an ascent to the line.
Yes, I can understand their aim, but they should do it more subtly maybe.
Manufacturers may at some point question way some vote with their feet and wallets. Cyclist need to find a voice; some of us still prefer light weight, rim brake bikes.
Yes, but we are the minority unfortunately.
