I practiced Shaolin Luohanquan under a reputable local master. The only one of our generation of students who was able to fight competently was the guy who left to take up muay Thai and BJJ. The instructor told us openly that when he was a kid, the older generation used to spar with no protection. In more recent decades they had to tone things down to make it more appealing because the master was worried about the art dying, and he felt that its preservation was more important than becoming a competent fighter in this day and age. It was probably a similar case with many other Chinese martial art schools
@@alexandrenedellec7116 same here. I regularly got knocked on the head. One day came home with a scratch near the eye and learned the all-important basic lesson of keeping your guard up
I can attest that the old school training environments you'd see in china would have students eating very bitter in order to learn kung fu. Harsh jibengong, being beat up by the teacher, constant fights being picked with your fellow students. Even the schools that don't have *organized* sparring would have a lot of sparring if you catch my drift lol. Now, with so many people in China having discovered they can make money off of kung fu even with minimal or no skill, and teachers who've migrated to the west worrying over modern western students not being willing to eat bitter, will not just remove sparring but also the jibengong and proper application teaching in general.
I'm glad you had an amazing time sparring with these guys. Kung Fu schools need to do more sparring like this and level up their skills. I'm glad that you showed this Kung Fu school to your community. I hope people will change their mind on Chinese martial arts. Lastly thank you for explaining one of the major reasons why Kung Fu has a bad reputation nowadays. Great content as always ! Cheers !
This is why Jeff Chan is the fucking man. Not afraid to put his neck on the line and try new things. No judgement towards other styles and will go anyplace, anytime to learn and train. You are an inspiration bro!

The facts of the matter are that with enough study you will begin to realize that modern Boxing came from Traditional Martial Arts. As Pugilism gave way to Rule Sets and grappling, elbows, headbutts etc were no longer acceptable, Pugilism became a crap show show of men throwing haymakers trying to keep their old form but not all the moves. Karate and Taekwondo were becoming popularized in England and the US with Bartitsu among other being formulated and Karate's influence on Boxing becomes apparent. Listen to some of the stories of the old timers and you'll come to know this
It's really cool that you're able to match whatever kind of intensity your sparring partners are comfortable with, it always makes me want to be a more conscientious guy in the gym. Thanks for the great example!

@langying Martial arts are a breeding ground for egomaniacs. The thing that turns me off about MMA is all the press conference, face off drama. In TCMA, ethics and medicine are an integral part of becoming a master.
@@arbogast4950 yeeeaaah, except egomaniac can rear its ugly head there too. I've had the misfortune of training at 2 different tkd schools run by an asshole -for lack of better word. Meanwhile, One championship's roster is full of class acts. Demetrius Johnson is a prime example. You should put stock in how a martial artist carries themselves, not in what style they train
Honestly bro, you have shown so much respected when sparring, I seen a few opportunities where you could have gone mad and just throw hard but you decided to just let it go and you have 100% of my respect for that
This is really interesting. They've cut out the bullshit by stress testing with sparring. Anytime that happens, all martial art starts to look like kickboxing because, as foundational principles, there are only so many ways the human body can generate force and protect itself effectively. With that said, this school's Kung Fu definitely has some cool funky combos you don't really see in other disciplines.
No doubt, the guy with red hair did well, his defence was effective tho he didn't land alot. For a Gong fu school I don't see alot of emphasis on speed and flexibility, everyone was pretty beefy but somewhat slow, plodding, and predictable. Lack of movement and head movement, Jeff could pick them apart with ease mostly. Strength means nothing if they can not hit anything
important to note that kung fu has A LOT of stand up grappling and most of the "dancy" bullshit that we see nowadays in their forms is basically air throws, locks and clinchworking that got "beautiful" as the time passed and resistance training was put aside.
also, giving the context kung fu was created and praticed for most of its existance, head movement would be of little use. most of their moves was focused on self defense to end a fight in the fastest way possible with things we would consider fouls in a combat sport. not saying that kickboxing/muay thai isn't effective in a streetfight with no boundaries, but you would rather train a groin kick than develop a whole art to chop the legs of someone with calf kicks; the same goes to create and train ways to hit someone neck/scruff rather than train relentesly consistent footwork and distance managing. in short, kung fu (in its original format and decent lineages, not the mc dojo bullshit we are used to see around) is not focused on methodical fair fighting for combat sports as kb and muay thai.
I mean thats true but remember there are types of "kick boxing" dutch style, thai style, Lethwei America or Western style etc etc. All with different emphasis, stances way they throw kicks and way they throw punches. A Dutch kick boxer does not throw a kick the same way a thai one does. And I imagine if full blown kung fu artists decided to get serious in kick boxing for the next decades their kicks would be different as well.
Those guys are really good. I practice Wing Chun myself so I understand how some kung fu styles can be stereotyped as 'Not useful' when like you said, its really the way you train and apply it. Great video 🙏🏾
Same Wing Chun mixed with Muay Thai and Standard Boxing/Kickboxing is no joke. They never expect a Hand Trap into an American Boxing Combination let alone two consecutive elbows from completely different angles. Trapping Opens Perfect Angles for Framing. And can even be done point blank with Infighting. But it had to be modified to suit such a purpose. If more Kung Fu schools Sparred. The only place they would really lose out is grappling. Unless you teach yourself tricks like Under Arm Hooks, Scarf Holds, Neck Ties, etc to control people who are skilled at grappling to not give them a good position in the first place. Once I added stuff like that and some Ground Game Wing Chun became my bread and butter when nothing else works.
@@AuthenticShaolin Same finding a Kung Fu artist who studies all the fundamentals, hard spars, does conditioning, learns any tactics they can absorb, learns to flow and crash, etc is a rarity. I genuinely one day would love to open a Kung Fu school for Wing Chun Tactics but Trains like a Boxing and MMA gym. But doesn't forget to teach Self Defense aspects like Multiple Opponents, Weapons, and Stressing Learning the Basics until it becomes Muscle Memory even when you getting Pummeled or Panicking.
We need more people like Jeff. The perfect sparring partner who adapts and records and breaks everything down for all levels of experience in any combat sport where sparring plays a role.
I very much appreciate this video. I train Kung Fu and have for years and I don't ever see people be charitable towards it. Thank you for shedding a light on it's largest issue.
Jeff I see you’ve played with some of my dear friends I’m glad you’ve found some real people that represent the meaning of martial arts. Greg and his family and friends are genuine people and they represent their art in and outside the dojo. Coming from Canada 🇨🇦 all the way to Long Island Ny is a travel but I’m sure you’d say it was well worth it. Your welcome to Atlantic City, NJ anytime brother.
Thank you for making this video. It's painful when kung fu is misrepresented so badly and lampooned in many popular martial arts forums due to these issues
Visited a shaolin kungfu school in China back in the day before it really developed economically. They were just really old school in how they approached everything. Those guys were amazing. They sparred every day and were pulling moves that were just mind boggling. Never saw kungfu the same way and definitely developed a healthy respect for practitioners who spar regularly.
In a way, the traditional martial art becomes a modern martial art because now it's being looked at as a tool that should be tested and improved over time I guess muay thai is kinda similar in that way, since it is also both traditional yet also modern
Hi MMAShredded, Just wanted to let out a big thank you for shedding some light (and also inviting some good discussion here) on this topic of Kungfu and sparring! The argument that Kungfu is impractical because of a lack of sparring has been a major issue in today's perception of Kungfu, so videos like these really help to inform the community of what Kungfu has to offer 🙏
People who compare Chinese martial arts to MMA are missing the point MMA isn't a fighting style, it's a sport No fighter who only trained in one fighting style, be it Chinese martial arts or muay Thai or whatever, can survive against properly trained MMA fighters It's the reason why MMA fighters all train in multiple fighting styles Saying Chinese martial arts is fake because a Chinese martial arts practitioner can't win in MMA with Chinese martial arts alone makes as much sense as saying karate is fake because a karateka can't win in MMA with karate alone MMA, by nature of its rules, favours fighters who cross trained in several different fighting styles, over fighters who trained exclusively in one style
Before you even mentioned it, I was thinking they are quite similar to you in their form of movement with quick, effective strikes and proficient head movement and defence. The sparring was delightful with its agility and rapidity while also being playful and respectful. Well done
@@AuthenticShaolin Wow these Sifus were amazing! Makes me want to get back into it! Lots of MMA fighters train and use KF! Call me corny but I love the chi and breathing aspects of it all 💪🏼💪🏼
The problem with traditional striking martial arts is you rarely see traditional techniques being delivered in actual sparring session. Doing different forms, and when sparring comes, it became just plain old kickboxing.
That's because most of traditional techniques can't be used with gloves on, and some of them couldn't be used due to the harm they cause, imagine a snake style fist in the opponents eyes, for example but in a non-sportive fight would be very useful.
This is awesome, Jeff! Thank you for sharing this. I've trained in Northern Shaolin and found it to lay a strong foundation for the fluidity of my movements when I'm in the ring.
The educational work on martial arts you do on this channel is very honorable; it is excactly like you say, most martial arts can be trained realistically under pressure with sparring, if you take this away and reduce every competetive component to its minimum you will end up with students, who can defend themselves only in scripted scenarios. But it doesnt have to be this way, thanks for showing us this school and keep it up, i love that you try out different martial arts, thanks Jeff!
This is how we got at it at a Tong Long club I go to, thanks for putting this out man, Kung fu has a stigma that it doesn't deserve around it and things like this help correct it.
I met this white dude who think's he's a f*ckin' badass because he took/know's M.M.A., I beat the f*ckin' white off his ass using Kali! Ever since M.M.A./BJJ became popular back in the 90's all they've done is talk sh*t about T.M.A., how their style is the best out there and everything else is fake and won't work in a real situation/fight.. they even made videos of M.M.A. fighter's beating up on Martial Arts "Masters", I bet those were rigged aswell just like UFC 1! Anyway's! I told him that my Grandfather taught me when I was younger back home and his response was "oh! That's not gonna work in a real fight"! "It's like a dance, like Kata".. So, I challenged him to a "street fight" match! No rules! Until someone quits or can no longer continue.. He agreed, we fought, he lost!! I'm sorry to say but M.M.A./BJJ may be badasses in the octagon but they ain't sh*t in a real street fight! I also learned Muay Thai and Shotokan here in the U.S. but I didn't use em', didn't have to..
sure they all spar but he also being nice cause they arent smart enough to use shinpads also all of them move and throw sloppy compared to other sparring footage
This was awesome to watch! I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for Kung-Fu and I’ve even trained Wah Lum, a Praying Mantis style for a couple years. I started doubting the practicality of it since no one really sparred at my school even though it was offered as an option so I never really felt confident about my self-defense or striking skills while I trained there. I wish there was a school like this around my way!
I've been training ma for 38yrs, 32 of those on cma. The main issue is that many people train forms/taolu without applications and/or add unpractical moves for the sake of competition and the new age crap. The introduction of competition wushu made this worse as taolu has no connection to sanshou/Sanda. At 53 yrs old, I am still going. Great video as always
this reminds me of the 1st Ip Man movie when he says "Good kung fu is not about sex or age but how well you fight. it's not about style, it's about you."
After years of Muay Thai training, I decided to try out a Mizong Louhan Kung Fu school nearby. My "audition" was to spar a mid-level student for three minutes. I was amazed how fast, slippery and competent he was. Signed up on the spot and worked my way up to a purple sash. You're right that most Kung Fu schools get a bad rap because they water things down to keep students. We sparred at least twice a week. And our Sifu ALWAYS explained the practical application of every "form" we learned. Anyway, great video as always! ✌
Thank you for this video! There are so many videos saying that Kung Fu can't fight. I've been in Fu Jow Pai (Tiger Claw) also here in New York and we sparred nearly every class. We pressured tests all our techniques and entered tournaments as well. Fu Jw Pai even has a 19 time World Kickboxing champion in Paul Vizzio, who teaches Fu Jow Pai in New Jersey.
Your outfit and gloves kinda reminds me of Jackie Chan from the movie Gorgeous (1999) He had a badass fight scene wearing all white. It was so sick! On another note: Im surprised with the amount of takedowns these Kung-Fu guys were throwing out. Really good technique!
An excellent display of skill and respect from Shifu Gregg and his crew as well as Jeff. The clip definitely gave me hope. After watching a lot of videos recently of the criticisms of Kung Fu, it's good to see practitioners taking those criticisms and providing answers.
for reael i think i saw in the martial arts journey channel that original kung fu consisted a LOT of wrestling. Shuai Jiao is one of the remaining wrestling styles and has a unique approach
@@neththeobnoxioussponge8929 the northern styles in particular have a lot of wrestling and takedowns when trained properly. How could they not, being so close to mongolia and with shuai jiao being so prevalent? The southern styles maybe not quite so much.
Yeah, these Kung Fu fighters are legit. Proof the martial art matters less than the guy who's using it and how he's trained it. I noticed that they didn't try to defend low kicks to the legs. Possibly because they don't wear shin guards?
I studied kung Fu as well, but I've done Japanese karate and I boxed, it's putting them all together when you're sparring.. This video was awesome, thank you very much for sharing
Interesting vid Jeff....would love to see you go with some high level Karate guys Kyokushin, Daidojuku, Enshin/Sabaki, Shotokan etc with their rules. Cheers @MMAShredded I think in NY/NJ there is a place called The Fighters House?
That is outstanding. I have actually never seen competent and usable kung fu. There transitions from striking to clinch/ wrestling are very very nice. I can really see they spar alot their reaction times and intensity are both very very good
Hey Jeff, have you explored sanda-sanshou? I was searching your channel but couldn't see anything. Would enjoy to hear your thoughts on the style. This video was awesome BTW!
I studied Hung Keun for many years. In the end I left due to not enough sparing and no understanding to practical applications to style. Later I practiced Kyukushin Karate, Muay Thai, Kun Khmer, Judo, and BJJ. After a while I could see the same principles in these arts as in Hung keun, the difference was they weren't trained. Now I can use my Kung Fu alongside my other arts. Still training to bring it all together though. Thanks Jeff for your hard work.

Traditional kung fu is the sort of martial art that focuses on chinese boxing, having sparrings without protective gears but with restrictions such as no face hits ( because head/face damage can be serious ) restrictions can include > ( sparring with hands only, no kicks or knees ) > sparring with kicks only > sparring with kicks and hands you have to be careful when kicking without protective gear, that you might damage yourself you don't have to KO your opponent ( you just have to spar, test your techniques and fight strategy ) you need to master 1 vs 1 fights => I said chinese boxing because boxing gloves are restricting very much, you can't use throws or chokes, you can't employ chinese boxing like win chun and such, > it's better to train without protective gear, so that you'll be conditioned better for street fights ( gloves even mma ones, can improve your protection range especially when blocking, you shouldn't learn blocking by gloves because it's a bad reflex in street fights ) one important thing in sparring is that you should not injure your sparring friend with injury, so you should have good control in your hitting attacks ( sifu or master can tell you to fight more seriously if you're being too sweet, naive, but I believe you can fight like in this video, but if you sense you can injure someone with full force, you better hone yourself and keep that energy for serious street fights, nothing is worse than injury ) - once you master 1v1 or the sifu sees your doing well, we can make fights spicier by doing 1 vs 2 or 1vs many even the weakest people in 1 vs 2, they can easily dominate you and destroy you, because you getting ganged, This is why I believe traditional chinese kung fu and chinese boxing, to be extremely effective, but you have to find a good master, and you have a very long way to master fighting, once you become a fighting master, there's no stopping you Continuos sparring is good, but sometimes you have to find balance, like review your fighting strategy or fighting techniques, for example: I myself, after many sparrings, reached a point where I believe I need to keep practicing certain techniques and fight strategies before getting back to sparrings, because I sparred so much, that I can see clearly what I'm lacking as a fighter, Also, very much important, here, in this video, I'm not seeing chinese boxing like win chun and others like hun ga, praying mantis or other forms of authentic chinese boxing, that are very much lucid, smooth and moves very much in harmony like waves, I personally myself decided to try to plunge myself in chinese boxing immersion for now, because it's very beautiful and effective, I can use western boxing as well, I can box well I believe, but I rather focus on chinese boxing better, because western boxing is flawed if faced by chinese boxing that can counter it very easily by chi sau similar techniques, once you have a very good mastery of chinese boxing, you might be able to mix it with western boxing when the opponent has no way to counter a western boxing technique ( such as jab, uppercut or whatever ) because opponent is showing very much a very open opening in sparring you can make mistakes, but in street fights, mistakes can be fatal, also gong fu teaches for the practitioner to not seek trouble or fights, but when inevitable trouble occurs, you'll show those criminal troublemakers the disaster that awaits, But gong fu does not promote violence or chaos, gong fu provides peace and inner peace in a quest for self mastery and continuous improvement
Jeff, this session was much more interesting than I even anticipated!... Your greatest asset (imo) is your adaptability, and you showed that once again in this session 💯... moving to your low kicks, throwing precise punches ( not volume), clinching, etc, enabled you to control tempo and be effective. These guys are good and aggressive, but that can be dealt with, especially with forward moving hands first strikers.... I especially appreciate the teeps 😄...remind them to not skip ab day!!
I watched this whole thing with a big ass smile on my face, man! Really enjoyed this one! Would love to see you spar some Capoeira, 52 Blocks, Taekkyon, and Taido practitioners! 😃{Whaddyasay?)
Wow these guys are fun! They know their stuff and definitely have some moves. Awesome gym and cool workout music! I liked the most how friendly and gentle they are. GJ guys!
It is insulting to call someone at 52, old man. I am 51, active (hoby) boxer, competitive trail runner and semi-pro skier and I look like 35, except my gray hair.
Jeff, did you notice how the Shifus were using a lot more hand trapping? That, is a very important skill to get from Kung Fu that you can add to your game, to get more control over over that range other arts usually instead seek to skip as fast as possible with good timing to enter the clinch or get open the distance from it. That dangerous elbow/knee/trapping range CAN be entered and exited with way more control-based approaches when you learn to manage the limbs. It enhances the ability to get the better grip or clinch position, creating openings for short unbalancing strikes or for shooting the legs/getting angles. To practice this, you can easily mix Kung Fu trapping drills called "sticky hands" (chi sao), with wrestling "pummeling" exercises. They blend very well together as they both are based on "feeling the tension" of the opponent and will greatly improve your close-range combat, where eye-hand coordination is never fast enough at that distance to have a timing-based approach when you seek more control over what can happen.
This is great. I am mid-40's, and I also look and move much younger than I should be. Just like this 52 y/o man. In addition to martial arts and weights, I do intermittent fasting as often as I can. This basically means skipping breakfast (and sometimes skipping lunch), and basically eating only 1-2 times a day. I only weigh 5 pounds more than I did when I was 22 years old..
Awesome🤙. I intermittent fast 20 hours a day , lift 2xs a week, and do 20 rounds of fighting a week as well, along with teaching and training with my students. Thanks for watching the video and supporting 🙏🤙
Great stuff, I guess their not using shin guards payed off, none of them even blinked at being leg kicked even without checking it. I’m glad to see some reputable Shaolin Quan fighters showing off Kung Fu effectiveness, thanks Jeff!

You are the definition of what a truly martial artist should be, respectful, humble, and skillful in fighting, and willing to learn. Great video of kung fu keep up the wonderful road of the martial way
Such interesting video! Never really accoured to me that kung fu practitioners spar, and the style that these black belts use looks like it would fit pretty well in modern mma striking
Jeff your style is very similar to the moves practiced in kung fu because it uses a lot of stepping attacks. stepping with attacking is one of the most commonly practiced attacks in some styles of kung fu, especially Shaolin derivatives. stepping with attacks will usually cause your stance to switch, which is why its necessary in Shaolin derived kung fu styles to learn how to attack from both sides. you can see this continue in martial arts derived in ancient times from Shaolin in shotokan karate and shotokan's relation tae kwon do as for the watering down of kung fu, mention should be made of the Chinese communist party and its wushu vs old school traditional kung fu here in your video and also in Taiwan. china actively created a combat ineffective version of kung fu for political reasons and calls it wushu. wushu is only for display, not for practical fighting purposes, but people will pretend otherwise
Wushu is not for practical fighting purposes?? My man what're you smoking?? Why don't you come to a Wushu gym and back up that claim?? Remember to video tape it or it didn't happen.
I've said the same thing, it's more about how we train. How often we do legitimate pressure testing (sparring and contact fight training). We fight regularly in our school and it keeps it real.
one thing ive noticed, most hobbyists have no interest in fighting. so whenever my teacher has said - next week we are sparring bring your gear, half the class doesnt show. he barely does sparring now because whats the point if people dont want to show up its frustrating but I get it, if youre running a business and the customers aint coming, then you have to adapt or close down.
Awesome! Thank you for continuing to be humble, respectful and open-minded enough to try out other styles and exchange with other stylists, and thank you for sharing your honest feedback on the current state of Chinese martial arts! We as Chinese stylists need to do better and validate our theories with sparring and acknowledge that our styles aren't perfect and what the flaws are.
I also questioned the way they caught high kicks. Shi Fu Gregg said that as long as the other hand is up to block, then it is okay. Similar to the under catch in Muay Thai
@MMAShredded Jeff Chan In my gym(s) ...we don't 'plow' either...its no longer allowed in muay thai fights, and even if it was, we wouldn't do it for risk of injury. If you can't dump someone from the position, transition to a different tactic

Anytime that happens, all martial art starts to look like kickboxing because, as foundational principles, there are only so many ways the human body can generate force and protect itself effectively. With that said, this school's Kung Fu definitely has some cool funky combos you don't really see in other disciplines.
cheers!
Absolutely 🤙🤙🤙. Thanks for watching 🙏
cheers!!
@dr.dylansgame5583 awesome!!! Great to see other kung fu stylists out there working the material 🤙🤙🤙🙏

Jeff I see you’ve played with some of my dear friends I’m glad you’ve found some real people that represent the meaning of martial arts. Greg and his family and friends are genuine people and they represent their art in and outside the dojo.

I love this from the bottom of my heart. Seeing a traditional martial art being practiced as its meant to be: To fight, not to ballet
:)
In a way, the traditional martial art becomes a modern martial art because now it's being looked at as a tool that should be tested and improved over time
I guess muay thai is kinda similar in that way, since it is also both traditional yet also modern

Hi MMAShredded,
Just wanted to let out a big thank you for shedding some light (and also inviting some good discussion here) on this topic of Kungfu and sparring! The argument that Kungfu is impractical because of a lack of sparring has been a major issue in today's perception of Kungfu, so videos like these really help to inform the community of what Kungfu has to offer 🙏
Awesome 🤙. Thank you for sharing 🙏

People who compare Chinese martial arts to MMA are missing the point
MMA isn't a fighting style, it's a sport
No fighter who only trained in one fighting style, be it Chinese martial arts or muay Thai or whatever, can survive against properly trained MMA fighters
It's the reason why MMA fighters all train in multiple fighting styles
Saying Chinese martial arts is fake because a Chinese martial arts practitioner can't win in MMA with Chinese martial arts alone makes as much sense as saying karate is fake because a karateka can't win in MMA with karate alone
MMA, by nature of its rules, favours fighters who cross trained in several different fighting styles, over fighters who trained exclusively in one style
sparring kung fu fighters with bullet for my valentine playing in the backround, my man is living the life
Before you even mentioned it, I was thinking they are quite similar to you in their form of movement with quick, effective strikes and proficient head movement and defence. The sparring was delightful with its agility and rapidity while also being playful and respectful. Well done
cheers!
That because everything you see in most martial arts originated from traditional not MMA which is only 26 years old

@mdyzward8553 thanks for the response 🤙🤙🤙🙏
The problem with traditional striking martial arts is you rarely see traditional techniques being delivered in actual sparring session.
Doing different forms, and when sparring comes, it became just plain old kickboxing.
That's because most of traditional techniques can't be used with gloves on, and some of them couldn't be used due to the harm they cause, imagine a snake style fist in the opponents eyes, for example but in a non-sportive fight would be very useful.
This is Awesome! Our episode with you is dropping this afternoon!

The educational work on martial arts you do on this channel is very honorable; it is excactly like you say, most martial arts can be trained realistically under pressure with sparring, if you take this away and reduce every competetive component to its minimum you will end up with students, who can defend themselves only in scripted scenarios. But it doesnt have to be this way, thanks for showing us this school and keep it up, i love that you try out different martial arts, thanks Jeff!
thanks for watching :)
It's not the art that matters, it's the artist.

This is how we got at it at a Tong Long club I go to, thanks for putting this out man, Kung fu has a stigma that it doesn't deserve around it and things like this help correct it.
Absolutely 💯💯💯. Thanks for watching
This is the most realistic kung Fu sparring that I've ever seen. I agree; it's not the art/sport, it's the person.
Um, duh! That's been said over n' over again since the 80's! You guy's act as if it's brand new information..
@@markmarasigan5787 Its new information to most mma fans. Most MMA fans think only muay thai and bjj work.

sure they all spar but he also being nice cause they arent smart enough to use shinpads also all of them move and throw sloppy compared to other sparring footage
Awesome. Thanks for sharing 🙏🤙🤙🤙

thanks for watching!!
Your outfit and gloves kinda reminds me of Jackie Chan from the movie Gorgeous (1999)
He had a badass fight scene wearing all white.

Thanks for watching and supporting the content. I'm glad we changed your mind about kung fu. We are more similar than different 🤙🤙🤙🙏
If you stop to think about it, Kung Fu has many more takedown techniques and they are very effective.
for reael i think i saw in the martial arts journey channel that original kung fu consisted a LOT of wrestling. Shuai Jiao is one of the remaining wrestling styles and has a unique approach
The takedowns off the caught kicks were what impressed me the most in this video.
You can't just put everything under the same kung fu umbrella though. This is way different than something like wing chun.
yes!!
Possibly because they don't wear shin guards?
im not sure why, but they dont ever wear shin guards for sparring!
Im guessing thats why some of them dont throw kicks that much, looks like some of them just want a boxing sparing match.
The fact they spar makes them legit. Dials it in!

Traditional kung fu is the sort of martial art that focuses on chinese boxing, having sparrings without protective gears but with restrictions such as no face hits ( because head/face damage can be serious )
restrictions can include
> ( sparring with hands only, no kicks or knees )
> sparring with kicks only
> sparring with kicks and hands
you have to be careful when kicking without protective gear, that you might damage yourself
you don't have to KO your opponent ( you just have to spar, test your techniques and fight strategy )
you need to master 1 vs 1 fights
=> I said chinese boxing because boxing gloves are restricting very much, you can't use throws or chokes,
you can't employ chinese boxing like win chun and such,
> it's better to train without protective gear, so that you'll be conditioned better for street fights ( gloves even mma ones, can improve your protection range especially when blocking, you shouldn't learn blocking by gloves because it's a bad reflex in street fights )
one important thing in sparring is that you should not injure your sparring friend with injury, so you should have good control in your hitting attacks ( sifu or master can tell you to fight more seriously if you're being too sweet, naive, but I believe you can fight like in this video, but if you sense you can injure someone with full force, you better hone yourself and keep that energy for serious street fights, nothing is worse than injury )
-
once you master 1v1 or the sifu sees your doing well, we can make fights spicier by doing 1 vs 2 or 1vs many
even the weakest people in 1 vs 2, they can easily dominate you and destroy you, because you getting ganged,
This is why I believe traditional chinese kung fu and chinese boxing, to be extremely effective, but you have to find a good master, and you have a very long way to master fighting, once you become a fighting master, there's no stopping you
Continuos sparring is good, but sometimes you have to find balance, like review your fighting strategy or fighting techniques,
for example: I myself, after many sparrings, reached a point where I believe I need to keep practicing certain techniques and fight strategies before getting back to sparrings, because I sparred so much, that I can see clearly what I'm lacking as a fighter,
Also, very much important, here, in this video, I'm not seeing chinese boxing like win chun and others like hun ga, praying mantis or other forms of authentic chinese boxing, that are very much lucid, smooth and moves very much in harmony like waves,
I personally myself decided to try to plunge myself in chinese boxing immersion for now, because it's very beautiful and effective, I can use western boxing as well, I can box well I believe, but I rather focus on chinese boxing better, because western boxing is flawed if faced by chinese boxing that can counter it very easily by chi sau similar techniques,
once you have a very good mastery of chinese boxing, you might be able to mix it with western boxing when the opponent has no way to counter a western boxing technique ( such as jab, uppercut or whatever ) because opponent is showing very much a very open opening
in sparring you can make mistakes, but in street fights, mistakes can be fatal, also gong fu teaches for the practitioner to not seek trouble or fights, but when inevitable trouble occurs, you'll show those criminal troublemakers the disaster that awaits,
But gong fu does not promote violence or chaos, gong fu provides peace and inner peace in a quest for self mastery and continuous improvement
3:24 never thought I would hear Drowning Pool’s first album in a Kung Fu dojo 😂
hahaha
Finally a gym with a good sparring playlist.

Jeff, this session was much more interesting than I even anticipated!...

Jeff your style is very similar to the moves practiced in kung fu because it uses a lot of stepping attacks. stepping with attacking is one of the most commonly practiced attacks in some styles of kung fu, especially Shaolin derivatives. stepping with attacks will usually cause your stance to switch, which is why its necessary in Shaolin derived kung fu styles to learn how to attack from both sides. you can see this continue in martial arts derived in ancient times from Shaolin in shotokan karate and shotokan's relation tae kwon do
as for the watering down of kung fu, mention should be made of the Chinese communist party and its wushu vs old school traditional kung fu here in your video and also in Taiwan. china actively created a combat ineffective version of kung fu for political reasons and calls it wushu. wushu is only for display, not for practical fighting purposes, but people will pretend otherwise
I didn't know about that communist party stuff, thanks for watching!

3:24 that spinning back kick to right straight was impressively fluid and smooth
I like how every time you pulled a head kick to not decapitate them, they caught it and used it to sweep or attack lol 😆
Jeff pointed out how in his sparring session with Icy Mike ...in the same situation, Mike let the leg drop and THEN continued sparring 👍.... good look
