Patch from Scratch - Recreating "Vortex" in 2024 (myth busting!)
There's a vicious rumor within the Modular Synthesis community, that once you yank out a patch cable, you'll neverrrrr againnnn hear that masterpiece. I am here to prove that myth busted once and for all (well, it's mostly been busted for decades, but this is me only just now catching up with y'all).
On my Modular Journey 3 release on Bandcamp, there was this piece of music I called "Vortex" for some reason. Well, I noticed I never made a Sonic Experiment for that... so I set out to correct that error whilst busting some ancient myths about patching modular.
This is the Patch From Scratch where I rebuilt the whole patch TWICE... once to practice, and once to film... and believe me, getting 6 hours of footage to fit in under 1 hour almost killed me.
You're welcome.

Sonic Experiments - Vortex: Recreated
Переглядів 94Місяць тому
🎵 Go to visionsmusicgroup.bandcamp.com to listen to my first-ever album releases! More releases coming in 2024! This was a Sonic Experiment based on a random Modular setup from Oct 2021. The experiment was to prove you can recreate old patches if you kept good notes - which, I did not, in 2021 :) In the end, the patch was pretty darn close to the original, if not a little better in fact due to ...
My Modular Journey - Season 3: Conclusion / 2023 Year In Review

Don't laugh. This is (finally) my Conclusion episode to LAST YEARS (2023) My Modular Journey: Season 3. I know, I know... but, give this a watch, and you might understand why it's taken me so long to finish this 11 minute video. I am really, truly this time, going to try and venture into other areas of music, maybe by 2025 :) because I still have a full load of Eurorack Modules to discuss in th...

🎵 Go to visionsmusicgroup.bandcamp.com to check out the new My Modular Journey 5 release, featuring Funky Fugue Jam Thingy! I started experimenting with percussion/drums in my modular setup in 2023, and this random piece fell together in May; I didn't have a video recording of this song or it's patch, which was weird but I guess I was just messing around. Turns out, it's actually a pretty fun l...
Custom Eurorack Case Builds (Part 6) - Prototype E
Переглядів 3212 місяці тому
By May 2022, my modular collection had outgrown not only the Behringer GO case, and the "cheeky" 6U x 168HP Prototype C, and even caused the ginormous 12U x 168HP Prototype C to burst it's seams... things needed to slow down. Also, with the Prototype D disintegrating due to the porous and brittle particle board I (mistakenly) built it out of, I had an epiphany: why not just a gosh darn rectangl...

So, here things go a little off the rails - no pun intended. I wanted to use ALL TWELVE U of my purchased rails, and fell in love with the idea of The Golden Ratio, by Eurorack Modular Case designs. Where I went wrong though was choosing a terrible material to build this case out of; melamine-coated particle board. This is not good stuff to work with, no only from the health risk perspective, b...
Custom Eurorack Case Builds (Part 4) - Prototype C

Re-purposing those original wooden cheeks I made months ago, I picked up 4 sets of 168HP rails from Modular Synth Lab and made my first "huge" Eurorack case :-) Hey, it was huge to me. Building "Prototype C" was really a fun experience, because I got to learn how Power Supply Units work, how to wire up Bus Boards myself, and I even got into making my own custom 10-pin and 16-pin Modular Ribbon ...
(NOT)Custom Eurorack Case (NOT)Build (Part 3) - Behringer GO Case
Переглядів 4792 місяці тому
Yeah, no. I did not build my Behringer GO Case... I bought it prefab :-) However, I am including it in this series because it was purchased around 3 weeks into my journey because I had already bought more modules than the 6U x 84HP could hold; namely a massive sequencer: Sinfonion. It's worth mentioning even the 6U x 140HP of the GO case didn't last through September 2021, and I was off to buy ...
Custom Eurorack Case Builds (Part 2) - Prototype B
Переглядів 1472 місяці тому
My first custom eurorack case was nothing more than 2 wooden "cheeks" that the Doepfer DIY kit rails would screw on to. What I liked about it was the angles of the modules for twiddling knobs and sliders! While this tiny case didn't last long in it's 6U x 84hp form, those wooden cheeks are still in use today in the 6U x 168hp Sequencer Rack. I really do love the simple design. 📚 CHAPTERS 00:00 ...
Custom Eurorack Case Builds (Part 1) - Prototype A

While this doesn't really qualify as a Case Build (the cardboard box), what makes it Prototype A is that I had every intention to build my own custom eurorack case before I even bought a single eurorack module! Yes, it's a standard HDMI out of the camera. Before I got the OSEE monitors, I had the BM cams plugged into my Samsung 40" television. You still have to use the tiny buttons on the G2 to navigate, though. No external touch screen (unless the BM Video Assist handles it? I do not know)

Great videos! I like my temps utile, but definitely didn't use it as much as I had hoped when I got it. Seemed like some odd behavior--or even like the burst didn't work well. But I think it is a matter of approach being it is organized more for a technical approach that just doesn't feel intuitive for everyone. Great to see how you are able to approach it and make sense of it in useful ways!

Thanks for sharing, but it would have been so much more interesting if you had demonstrated this with the Behringer 182. Problem is that getting reliable results from a quantizer is much more difficult using an analogue sequencer than from an LFO sweep. For example, I had great difficulties with using the Doepfer A-156 dual quantizer to get any decent results with the Behringer 182, simply because it regularly, randomly sharpens or flattens the note, which makes it rather useless for the purpose. my Q-040 has not arrived yet (I sent the Doepfer back), but the reason I am going to try it is for the fact it has a jumper that allows you to have some control over the noise hysteresis and I am hoping that will make the Q-040 much more reliably produce the same notes all the time. We will hopefully find out soon.

Love this. Looks really nice. That speaker carpet is so hard to work with, I found that 3M adhesive spray works the best and you want the wood to be tacky, not too wet or you get those wrinkles. Also you have to use a scissors to cut it, not a knife or it frays up as you saw. But overall it looks really nice. I haven’t done this yet but I’m pretty sure you can buy the Tiptop Mantis 2 or 3 tier brackets and connect the Behringer Go cases together. I have a full System-100 case almost exactly like yours as well as another case full of Make Noise modules and was thinking of connecting them together. Then I thought I could get a third case and do a 18U 140HP system and put it next to my 168hp cabinets. So I might buy the Mantis brackets and see. The holes should all line up because Behringer basically copied parts of the Tiptop case. I do have the big Behringer System 55 that has the red brackets that aren’t sold anywhere, I wish Behringer sold those in 2 and 3 tier versions. The only issue with connecting everything together is you have less flexibility when patching since it’s one huge unit instead of 2 or 3 separate cases. Sorry for my long comment but maybe it will help your algorithm somehow. I appreciate how well you’ve documented your modular journey, it’s been very educational for me.

I like your style! 18U x 140HP was a direction for me, but I went with 168HP instead as a kit for the learning experience. Love the Behringer GO case tho, so I may downsize to that setup someday.

Good advice about the particle board. I was going to use MDF which is always ridiculously heavy but I learned that Doepfer uses 1/4” birch or similar wood on their low cost cases and they are actually quite strong for using such thin material. I’m in the process of replicating a Doepfer monster system (168hp) with a 6U base and two 9U cabinets, mainly because it’s too hard to move one giant 24U 168hp case no matter what material you use. I know the angled look is cool with one large cabinet (that’s what I have now) but I thought sort of a reverse Marshall stack look with the 2 cabinets on top of the “head” or base in this case would be interesting. This series is great. I’m really bad at woodworking so I’ve been doing a lot of research before building anything and this has been very helpful. I do think what companies charge for custom cases is a little crazy. They are handmade though and labor is expensive. Did you ever mention where you purchased your black rails? Those look nice.

Good comments, man .. yes, I also am overwhelmed with the features, of this collection, (having what you're showing here) .. I've got one old module (year 2012) that is very basic, and easily understood .. compared to the multi-mode (it's not menu diving, .. but rather button diving, for Mutables). I believe what happens is there is many randomized facets that can happen at once, .. to the point that the musical-like impact is smothered, or destroyed, in our hearing. IF I can discipline myself on concentrating on 2 or 3 features, avoiding my brain from overload, and .. alot of times .. and the musical result, is satisfactory .. to even quite good. They're all good modules .. but, Stages .. as you've pointed out, standing pretty tall, in it's abilities. I wonder if I won't learning more about Stages, .. for years. I believe that Calsynth has good clone substitutes, to almost all of MI's line, .. though, I don't own any of them, yet.

I've replaced them with After Later Audio clones. Nothing wrong with CalSynth of course, I just haven't gotten to that pile yet :-) Check out the Cara & nRings followup video to see how that went. Thank you for watching!

@@VisionsMusicGroup Hey, I'll check that out, sometime. Somehow, I missed your mention of ALA, .. which could serve in the same way. Yes, .. it's great that there are alternatives/substitutes. I'm sort of in the larger modular person, though .. even if does entail another skiff, or whatever. It CAN get busy enough where even the more spacious MI layouts are a bit too close together, with enough cables .. ah, but it's a compromise, after all.

I've built three DIY cases. Yours is a whole lot nicer than my first one!

Nice build. The layout and flow makes sense. A lot of these big builds tend to be a random pile of modules. I like it when you can setup a base patch using those little yellow Doepfer wires instead of a default rats nest of wires, and then build from there. Good work.

Hi the delay 172 is a chorus, I love it, make it more subtle . The gates on the 173 can be used as a sub osc with the S/H module - check out ua-cam.com/video/fWShhGTb9zk/v-deo.htmlsi=ilEykIkNGoXxHD7z this is the only video that uses them for a purpose and it works. Great vid by the way the sound of the 100 is soooo good. I love the early Human League and this is their sound (Reproduction and Travelogue) Such a great sound - thanks

I'm a bit jealous that you recorded so much through all this

It's a thing I've done since the invention of VHS recorders 🤣 Call it PTSD from not having camcorder devices when I was actually a real musician in the 80s, years of memories, lost. I have more than made up for it since 1990 though. If I told you I have around 15TB of recorded material, would you think I'm nuts? 🤪
