I gotta say, I love how that even though Ian is gifted with magic and Barley isn’t, he isn’t ever jealous of his powers or tries to take them for himself. Instead he helps his brother with his fantasy knowledge and I think we need more supporting characters like that.
exactly!! right from the start he just felt pure joy for Ian, supporting and even coaching him. first sign of their relationship being slightly different from most siblings, due to the loss of their dad and Barley filling that space
The director mentioned in the commentary, how Ian act like a well-adjusted kid because he's got both parental figures in his life, even leaning on Barley in the family photo, and Barley acts more like a kid losing a parent would act, struggling I mean, with the car and the tickets and the "extended gap year"
The concept was great, and based in real life. The writer/director never met his dad. He passed while his mom was still pregnant with him. Only had his voice on a tape. Beautiful stuff. Onward was a great movie that got lost in the COVID pandemic. It came out, and then two weeks later the world shut down. And Disney just said "screw it" and put it on Disney+ instead -- but everyone was just watching the news and covering our fruit with hand sanitizer.
This film was definitely the victim of unfortunate circumstances, coming out literally a few weeks before COVID hit and caused everything to shut down, which led to it underperforming at the box office. I don't think it's one of Pixar's best films or anything, but I thought it was rather underrated when I finally got around to seeing it, with all the great comedy and heart that you'd expect from one of these films
This movie kind of changed my life when I saw it. My older sister really is Barley and I am definitely Ian, though we do have both parents. Our parents accidentally created a rivalry between us where she loved me, but she saw that I was treated as the golden child, and I saw her as a screw up. When this movie came out, I had completely cut my sister out of my life going on 6 months because I couldn’t stand how “dumb” she was. I went to this movie prepared to see a father/son movie, but when I saw us reflected back at me, I broke down sobbing. These days my sister and I have never been closer, and now we are working on trying to heal together in our 30’s/40’s. Our parents are shocked, but grateful for the change.
I also saw my relationship with my sister in Ian and Barley. Difference being, I'm Barley. 😅 The way you explained your experience and relationship with your sister reminded me heavily of my sister and how she views me. We're not estranged, or anything like that, but she definitely thinks very little of me - has ever since we were young. She always makes it clear that, if something is going wrong in my life, it's my fault and that she has no empathy for me. (For context: I struggle heavily with depression, anxiety, self-motivation and self-worth. I don't have much in the way of support from friends or family, so when I stumble I fall.) She's quick to point out my flaws if I present them in any way and she doesn't usually apologize for rude behavior. My parents (specifically my mother) have always treated her like the golden child and coddled her, and usually side with her whenever she and I get into an argument. My point is, I'm happy that you and your sister were able to make up and grow closer because of this movie. I wish my sister had come to a similar conclusion when we watched it, but alas... I'm pretty sure her only take-away was that she related to big, strong, outgoing Barley while small, quiet Ian was like her weak, older sister... 😓
Barley being the older/oldest sibling who has it the toughest but still has to hold it together for their younger sibling(s) really punches me in the guts. When Ian crossed the bottomless pit and the rope falls off of him, Barley is freaking out and terrified to the point of tears. He seems like the fun, goof-around older bro, which he IS, but underneath it all his top priority is Ian's safety and when that was in jeopardy without Ian's knowledge, Barley was horrified. And there was NOTHING he could've done if something went disastrously wrong. He had promised Ian the worst that could happen to him was that he fell, and the rope, and Barley, would catch him. Instead, the rope untied and Barley would not be able to save Ian if he fell. That's how it must feel to be in charge of a youngster about to take a huge step in their life, like their first day of school/high school, going off to college, or moving away. It's the guardian's job to give the young adult the confidence to take the first step, but the whole time the guardian is absolutely petrified for them. And there's often not gonna be a way for the guardian to protect the young person in their care when something inevitably fails/goes wrong. That's family growing up together.
There’s not a lot of really good modern depictions of that brotherly love type relationship. So often in literature brothers are pitted against each other and fathers take on the tyrannical stereotypes. In this story they show love and anger and bitterness and forgiveness and sacrifice all in pursuit of the love and pride of the father. Which the father freely gives but the brothers had to go through the experience in order to freely accept. It’s not a shock to me that John Krasinski, Chris Pratt, and Tom Holland were involved in telling a tale about the strength of good pure masculine love. The love of brothers, fathers, and sons.
My brother is 15 years younger than me. My mom had to work a lot and my dad wasn't too involved in raising him, so I was basically co-parenting him until school. We really bonded later in life and became pracitcally best friends despite the age difference. We watched this movie together when I was pregnant, and after seeing the mom in the movie he told me "this is the kind of mom you're gonna be" and it was the best compliment I've ever gotten in my life.
This film has been a very personal and emotional for me. As someone who is very distant to my father even though we lived in the same house for two-thirds of my life. I miss him and I missed the point where we could have been closer.
I love that Wilmer Valderrama made a cameo in the film (5:20 onwards) - and Chris Pratt and Tom Holland as the brothers are awesome - need to watch this again!
9:21 Not the WAND. Omg I cant be the only one who thought she just took a piece of wood and called it a wand and not that theres an ACTUAL wand in that thing lmAOO
This movie is one of two pixar movies that has ever made me cry. My biological dad passed away the year prior to the movies release and I watched this movie with my mom. even watching this commentary video, with all the funny input from Angelina, i cried a little bit
This is absolutely my favorite Disney movie of all time. It went right to the top from the first time I watched it - I have absolutely no complains about it. the voices, the story, everything was fantastic. Big Hero 6 is the only other one that comes close for me.
This was the last movie I saw in theaters before covid hit. I remember this movie making me more emotional than I had anticipated. Glad you enjoyed it too!
I love this film. I have NO idea why it's not more popular! The world-building is well thought out, the bonding totally believable and mom is a badass. What more do you want?
To me such an underrated movie 😊😊😊it just makes feel so emotional and so touched by how even though one of your parents isn’t there anymore you still have your older siblings or siblings in your life who are always there for you and always takes care of you and that’s what Barley was doing for Ian. Both brothers were great and really love the fantasy side of the story 💖💖💖thanks for the reaction 😊😊😉😉
8:37 AUGHHH The way you can TELL what Ian and Barley's dad would've been doing if his whole body had returned instead of just his legs! Here, he would've been hugging Ian or squeezing his hand.
I'm just hoping that if there's a sequel we will see a group dedicated to finding a rehabilitation area for the unicorns, the Pegasi and the unicorn-pegasi who have a name but I forget what it is. A place where there's enough food for all of them that they don't have to go searching through rubbish bins to find, a place where someone can groom them and mend their wings and horns so they won't be so dirty, a place where they can roam and fly freely
As a fellow D&D nerd and DM, I am so very for this. This film is amazing. Keep playing! I agree with the people who want to hear about your character and campaign! Give us the info!!!
I came so close to crying when I saw this in theaters with my nephew. A little before seeing it, my little sister (not his mom) told me that I was a key part in why she grew into the person she is. She said I came through for her when our parents couldn’t and she couldn’t imagine a life with a different big brother.
This movie is definitely an underrated gem, I loved it so much when it came out, I remember crying like two or three times throughout it (firstly when Barley sacrificed Gweniver, because my own first car which I named and grew attached to broke down not too long ago at the time, right after dutifully bringing me home safe one last time)
This was probably the Disney movie that made me cry the most, along with Up. Inside Out was pretty emotional too, but now that I'm older I can handle it. I think the people need to pay more attention to the GOOD Disney movies like Onward, because sometimes Disney's content is dumb or filled with some sort of political message that people aren't ready for. However, I like a lot of the "dumb" cartoons and sitcoms from Disney Channel and Disney Junior/Playhouse. Jungle Junction, Fish Hooks, and Kiff need more love too!
If you're okay with text, Discord channels and play by post games can work surprisingly well. Especially if you use Tupperbox to create proxy bots for your characters.
Im just so happy to find out im not overly emotional for getting choked up at the end of this movie. When this movie came out a cpl years ago I watched it with my gf at the time and she thought there was something wrong with me bc i got emotional at the end of the movie. Mind you my brother and i lost our father at a young age so this one especially hit home. Thank you Angelina 😊❤
When my sister took me to see it in the movie theater she hold my hand throughout the whole movie because the movie was released on my dad's 7th death anniversary and I couldn't stop crying because it made me remember the times I had with him but it also reminded me that I wasn't able to say goodbye to him before he died.
such a fantastic movie, one of my favorite pixar movies, Rattatoile is my favorite and i think this is my third favorite pixar film EVER. toy story being second ofc.
I personally love this movie because my brother and I went through a lot of good and bad things but we never gave up on each other in any circumstance.

Me and my family love playing d&d so this movie was a blessing! I would love to hear about your d&d campaigns too! I don't know what your future movie plans are but I would definitely recommend reacting to Nimona.
D&D is awesome. My first character was a Ranger/Rouge since then i'v'e played a Moon Druid and a Paladin/Warlock all of whom were Dwarves🥰 Imagine if they remade the 1983 movie Krull as an animated movie 🤔 that would be fun 😁
For yeeeeeaaars, I teased my brother for being such a nerd, he played D&D and WOW, and I could never understand it. Then, I married a gamer. For years, it put a strain on our marriage because I still didn’t get it. Then, one day, he got up from his game to take a phone call, and asked me to step in. All I had to do was wander around, pick flowers, shoot mean plants, and collect goodies…….it was kinda fun…….5 years later, I have 7 alts, one main, and I’m currently leveling a fire mage for the first time🙌🏼💖
You earned your thumbs up by the end of your intro!😀 TTRPGs can be a bit of an obsession. Robin Williams once said that D&D was harder to quit than cocaine. If you want to feed the obsession while doing your job, you could try reacting to an actual-play D&D game. Critical Role is an obvious choice, but there's just SO MUCH of it, so I'd suggest some one-shots or limited series. From CR's world of Tal'dorei, Exandria Unlimited: Calamity is AMAZING, and takes place in the setting's distant past, so no spoilers. I'd also REALLY recommend Dimension 20 (the first season is a setting a lot like Onward).
😎👍 Another animated movie that came out shortly before this one that you'd probably also enjoy is "Wonder Park." It kind of flew under most people's radar because it was made by Paramount, which isn't known for their animated features the way that Disney and Dreamworks are. It's exactly the sort of tearjerker you like, that also features a handful of celebrity voices, (Jennifer Garner, Mila Kunis, Matthew Broderick etc).
If I had a nickel for every time Chris Pratt played a fun-loving nerdy dork of a man-child who has a heart of gold, and who was too scared to say goodbye to a parent dying in a hospital bed and deeply regrets it... I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice, right? Wait... where'd all these tears come from...??? (Also, Barley wasn't Ian's father, but he was the closest thing he had to a daddy.)
Special thanks to my patrons
That must’ve of taken a while😭
I gotta say, I love how that even though Ian is gifted with magic and Barley isn’t, he isn’t ever jealous of his powers or tries to take them for himself. Instead he helps his brother with his fantasy knowledge and I think we need more supporting characters like that.

Fr like the perfect definition of brother

The director mentioned in the commentary, how Ian act like a well-adjusted kid because he's got both parental figures in his life, even leaning on Barley in the family photo, and Barley acts more like a kid losing a parent would act, struggling I mean, with the car and the tickets and the "extended gap year"
From Monsters University to this movie. The director's damn good with stories exemplifying platonic & brotherly love
The concept was great, and based in real life. The writer/director never met his dad. He passed while his mom was still pregnant with him. Only had his voice on a tape. Beautiful stuff. Technically, Scanlon was only 1 years old when his father died in an automobile crash, but still.

Ange keeps watching all these sad/cute movies and i dont have enough tissues for the secondhand emotions I am getting from the reactions
Being playing with the same D&D group since 1982. Our longest game went for 11 years.
Always make sure to do what the DM does not expect to keep them on their toes.
Welcome! I to was taken over by dungeons and dragons… I spent 3 years catching up on critical role just to feed the fix ❤
5:29 the audacity Angelina has to change Sharky with toothless
This movie did not get the exposure it deserved because it came out in theaters right at the point that covid closed down all the theaters.
No way, I’m doing D&D too and will be DM in a campaign next month
I have the same ailment where all I want to do is play dungeons and dragons
In this alternate universe, Spiderman and Starlord are elf brothers searching to revive their dead father....
I remember i was crying so hard even after I left the cinemaaa
Never rode in a van?! Well I tell you what... I've got some candy... 🥸

17:19 yawaweee😅😅😅
I wonder if you'd ever get around to watching Speed Racer. I like your videos, can't wait to see more reactions. Keep up the good content!
I'm still disappointed that the hug in the ending was spoiled in the trailer.
omgggg yessss my fav and most underated movie by my fav reactor
If I had a nickel for every time Chris Pratt played a fun-loving nerdy dork of a man-child who has a heart of gold, and who was too scared to say goodbye to a parent dying in a hospital bed and deeply regrets it... I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice, right? Wait... where'd all these tears come from...??? (Also, Barley wasn't Ian's father, but he was the closest thing he had to a daddy.)
Thank goodness I am not an only child, I love movies about sibling bonds :))
I love onwards it my most favourite pixar movie ❤
😂bro she came in sight the wand case and I’m looking at that like “wow what a wand a stick” then I looked at it more and thought table leg
