This kind of video is what I really love to see from ultimate reloader. I always look forward to videos with Guy because the emphasis is on the reloading + results rather than some new-fangled product.
Thanks. Sometimes I do review a "new-fangled product" because at UR we do try to bring cool new stuff to the attention of our viewers. Gavin has introduced some amazing things. I'm trying not to be too stuck in my ways, and I like trying the new stuff too. But yes, mostly I like handloading, shooting, then reporting on it. :)
@@guyminer3168 Yes, but at times it seems to get out of hand. But when your in that circle,s Gavin is in, he probaly can't help it. But I do firmly beleave you help keep Gavins feet on the ground. You are an excellent help to Gavin. Back fire needs a "Guy" type person on his channel. But your a hard guy/character to find.
I like Gavin's stuff on precision shooting, but I am an older hunter that still uses the old standby cartridges. They worked years ago, they still work today. So what if they are old and boring, they still work and work good !! So I love Guy's, hunting cartridge spots on the old favorites, the 308, 30-06, ect. Keep it up Guy, you have a fan base out here !!
@@neilbuckley6293 Very nice. No "need" for one of the modern rifle. My Mauser has the first two nearly touching with 3rd rolling out to just at an inch. Very happy with it.
Well it’s game time. New goal for the year is to start reloading. Turn off the trash tv and find podcast like this. I wish I could find somebody like you locally to learn from in person. Until then the videos are more than enough!
Thanks for highlighting heavy 30cal projectiles. Years ago i used an 30-40 krag with 220gr RN and it works. Im new to the 30-06 and recently picked up some Hornady 220 RN and Nosler 200 Partitions. That 220 RN looks fine for 300yd and closer which covers a lot of hunting. Those 212gr Hornady look very outstanding for longer ranges. Both these Hornady bullets look outstanding from a 30-06.
Thanks Guy! I appreciate the fact that when it comes to 300 prc and 300 win mag, you are one of very few personalities that are willing to admit that to handloader, the difference is minimal. Most just blow smoke at us because it's new and cool. I'm loading a 212 eldx in my 300 win mag at 2875 for elk this year. Great information
You're welcome! All it takes is a quick look at published load data from Hodgdon to see that they have similar capabilities. Got my first 300 Win Mag in the early 1980's and learned a lot from it. Don't have that rifle anymore, but I shot it rather a lot. :) Even ground squirrels!

Yep nice one have just got my new .300 win started with factory hornady 200eldx but are going to reload the 212eldx went to this because of the high BC
I've been using the Hornady. 308" 212 gr ELD-X bullets along with Alliant Reloder 23 in most of my 30-06 rifles since 2017. Accuracy has been exceptional. My sporter 30-06 rifles, all with 22" barrels, have been producing muzzle velocities @ 2,430 fps, here in FL (right at sea level), in winter, with temperatures @ 50°F and barometric pressures @ 30.1 in/Hg. Not too bad for a 30-06. My 24" barreled 30-06 rifles only saw a slight increase in velocity over the 22" barrels, producing @ 2,480 fps under about the same environmental conditions. I've only taken a handfull of @ 160 to @ 220 lbs whitetail deer and less than a dozen @ 80 to @ 250 lbs hogs with these bullets, at ranges from @ 50 yrds to @ 280 yrds, but bullet performance has been excellent, at least in exit hole size. Never recovered a single one of those 212 gr pills. Not for lack of trying. I would have loved to have a few of those post-impact bullets to examine. But heck, DRT is awesome. The furthest any of those animals ran was @ 30 yrds. Great performance from an excellent bullet design.
The eldx is just a glorified cup and core bullet. It is way to fragile. I know a lot of hunters who regret using it. Get a bonded bullet or full copper and you don't need 200+ grain slugs to do the job.
@@mikepetrilli4686 Couldn't agree more. There's a ton of incredible controlled expansion bullets on the market, but people get all horny for the high BC cup and cores that blow up if you look at them wrong.
Y’all made me feel way better, once you stated that there was commonality between the .300WM and .300PRC. I was feeling 33% alienated, till then, as these are my three calibers of choice. I’d be interested in seeing y’all do a “review” of the old -03-A3 family, and sporterized variants. A -03-A3 build might be interesting.
I think it was a great informative video. I don’t own 30 caliber rifle. I do have a 270 model 70,an 8mm Mauser, and a 7mm-08 that I load for. I only get shoot deer and hogs here in East Texas. The 140grain interlocks preform great on both at 300+ yards. I will be acquiring some eldx bullets now. 😊
In 1980 I went down to buy a 30-06 but they sold it before I got there. I bought the 270 and just like you I have been shooting Winchester power points for most of the game I have taken ie normal bullets 😂
Great show! I use 160 gr HOR RN in my 6.5 mauser, 175gr in my 7mm Rem mag and 280 Rem and they all work great on deer even though the last 2 are my moose rifles.
Man! Great video Guy! I'm taking my Africa trip (in your honor) in 30 days. Of course using -06 shooting solid copper 175grn Barnes for plains game slam and a 375 Ruger using 300grn Barnes. Can't wait to send ya the results!
Excellent. Great data. Appreciate the description of everything used. Demo of bullet performance is very valuable. Well done. Thanks a ton. My son is using 165s in 30/06 for whitetail. I have been using 162 ELDX handloads in 7mm RemMag at 2825fps with success. My elk loads for future hunts are the same ELDX @ 2930. My youngest is using 308 with 165s also. So at this point we are running medium weights for caliber. No shots are much over 300 and many are around 100. Again this is just fantastic content. Thank you.
I loaded my friends 300WM with the 220 interlocks. He drew a Bull Moose tag in Maine. His Browning liked them about 1moa. They performed just fine on a 720ish pound moose. I shot my moose last year with a 180 interlock boat tail. One shot frontal chest at 165 yards. Muzzle velocity of 3050fps.
Once again, a great informative video. Thanks! Something I would like to see is light hunting bullets for .30 caliber rifles. You could start with 300 HAM'R and go all the way up to 300 Win Mag.
I've done articles/videos here on UR for the 130 grain Barnes TTSX in the 30-06 which had blistering high velocity and excellent accuracy. Also did one on the 125 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip from the 308 Winchester, again with good accuracy and velocity. A well constructed, lighter weight .30 cal bullet is useful for sure.
I use 180gr RNSPs in .30-06 for deer hunting. I use 165gr sft pts in .308 Win for deer hunting. I use max powder charges in both. Don't know if these bullet weights qualify as heavy for caliber though. Most shots on deer are less than 100 yards. Last nice buck was at about 70 yards. 180 grainer in that 30-06 did the job well. Great video! Thank you for the information.
I have all 3. I built my 300prc just because my buddy had already rented the reamer and I had a Green Mountain 1:10 barrel lying around. Finished at 25.5", in and old rem 700 L action and a stupid heavy tacmod chassis that was collecting dust. 3,100fps with a hornady 200 eld-x over RL26. Very little load development and I was hovering around 1moa. 150gr gmx north of 3,600fps over RL26 as well but shooting closer to 1.5-1.75moa. Maybe I need to give some heavier bullets a chance...but I can't imagine needing "more" of anything out of this cartridge. The 300 prc has effectively made the 300wm irrelevant. No sloppy chamber to deal with, no belt, good brass, etc, etc. I probably won't hunt with mine, but I could see building something that weighs less than half of what I cobbled together for big bear or elk at longer ranges.
I used .308 180grn. But now I can never find them in stock. My store has had 10 boxes on back order for months. I've switched to the 6.5x55 160grnRN 2600fps . With great results.
I use RN bullets for ther Sectional Density. In thick brush of northern ontario I want as much brush busting as possible with still having a good G1 number. Traditional brush guns usually do not have good B.C. . I also found IMR8531 to work best for me for RN . 300win 220gr 2675 fps out of BAR
Good content I appreciate your work. I think comparing the 178 ELDX and the 212 ELDX in those cartridges would be very interesting to see if the lighter round helps the 308 and 30-06 hang in there with the added velocity.
I used the 178 ELD-X in January for a cow elk at 405 yards. It did really well, but I got to thinking that maybe the 212 would have done even better? I don't know... I got some very good accuracy & velocity from max charges of Ramshot Hunter and the 178 gr ELD-X.
I have always liked the roundnose boolits in 6.5x55 , 270 , 308 , & 06 for whitetails and hogs & occasionally a rouge fox squirrel, not always the heaviest available for caliber, but roundnose sp really penetrate and don't cause alot of bloodshot meat. Now this is all at "woods" ranges maybe out to 200yds they work well and seem to be extremely accurate in every caliber used. Long range is obviously another story.
My question is why would I go for a round nose over a spitzer like the hornady ELD-X? Don't they both expand? I was thinking about building a 300 PRC and hand loading for it. Would it be worth loading both bullet types?
Good morning buddy Just saw this. We've been hunting. In a 300 prc I would definitely use Spitzer type boolits because it is a long range power house. That caliber looks to be great for those far shots and long range target. A roundnose bullet would hamper your down range ballistics. I like rn bullets in woods hunting situations, shots within and mostly under 100yds.
@@hardlylivin6602 Round nose don't deflect quite as much if they hit some brush or twigs compared with the spitzer type. This is mostly useful in close, brush filled woods at less than 100 yards. You shouldn't be intentionally shooting through brush, but sometimes you will not see a twig or brush or grass, and a big, heavy round nose can save the shot in that case. More useful in a short brush gun for very close up shots. Not really the application of your 300 PRC.
Just because the 308 Win is 30 cal, doesn't mean it has to be loaded excessively. I don't see anyone overloading the 30-30, 300 Savage, 30M1 carbine, etc. Any comparisons done with the 308, has the rifle with a shorter barrel and heavier bullets almost as if someone is purposely trying to discredit the 308Win. I only hunt moose, using 308 Win up to 300 yards, or 300 Win mag up to 500 yards. I reload for both. In the 308 I use either IMR4895 or Varget, 165gr bullets, various cases, magnum primers. In my 300Win Mag I use H1000, 180gr Nosler Partitions, various cases, magnum primers. I have never wounded or lost a moose yet, in 48 years hunting. Stay safe, vigilant and happy shooting
I've got a 24" Krieger barreled .308 and a couple of 24" 30-06's. However my 308 has a 1:12 twist rate and doesn't stabilize the long and heavy bullets. With bullets of 175 grains or less though, it's quite accurate. I find that with various 165 or 168 grain bullets my 308 tops out in the 2700 - 2800 fps range. With the same bullets the 30-06 produces 2900+ fps at max loads. Not a huge difference, 150 fps more or less for the most part. We chose Gavin's short barreled 308 for this simply because it has a fast twist barrel that easily stabilized the long 212 grain ELD-X bullet. It was really a comparison of the two bullets at various muzzle velocities, not really a cartridge comparison.
@@guyminer3168 totally understand the twist rate issue, and I understand why you chose the one you did, and I would have done the same thing in your position. I just think the shorter barrel skewed the results some. I have a 24" Savage 110 with a 1:10 twist that pushes 165/168 range bullets at 2950-3050 depending on the bullet. (Max Load of 2000MR w/CCI 200 Primer) I'm always amazed at the speed difference between barrels of the same length. With what I get out of that 308, I never had a reason to jump to a 300WM for my purposes. Again, enjoyed the video, thanks again.
I pretty much just use conventional weight bullets in an all-copper bullet like a Barnes TTSX and have great penetration and accuracy at the ranges I hunt.
Last fall, 350 yds, carl Gustav sporter 6.5 swede, 140gr ELD match. Dropped a buck dead in his tracks. This year, 200gr Speer hot core savage 111 338 win mag!! Can't wait
Great video. Very well done I like to load 308 with 175s bonded bullets for the Bush. Close range stuff. And load 150s for longer range field work. The 150s are pretty flat outa my 24inch barrel . Keeps the vel up
@guyminer3168 yea I was also impressed. Getting around 2850 with the 150s. And bout 2640 with the 175s. Them 2 loads take care of all my whitetails hunting needs
Would love to see what velocity you get out of a 308 win fast twist with a longer barrel, everyone compares 308 to other cartridges and then shoots them with different barrel lengths. They compare 6.5 creedmoor to 308 win and then shoot them with with a longer barrel on the 6.5 creedmoor and you guys are doing it in this video with the 30-06 and 300 prc. .
You may have missed the point, he is illustrating what those two bullets do at different speed levels and the difference between them, not so much how fast that a cartridge can drive a certain weight bullet. What you are asking, is predominantly irrelevent to the point of the vid, as his gun will be different than yours, even if they both had the same barrel length.
I’ve shot a number of large of african plains game with 220gr Hornady Round Nose in my .30-06, and it served me well until I could afford a larger rifle. This included a number of large Cape and Livingstone Eland.
Looking at your Varget load on the 308 is interesting. I get 2470fps with Accurate 4064 and the 212 eldx on a 26 inch barrel 1/10 twist 308 win.. I just don't know how temp stable it is. It produced subMOA groups past 600yrds. Looking at Varget might be a better option if I get the same accuracy. Also what your explaining in the vid is the reason I went to the 212 ELDX for my 308. It makes a huge difference in down range energy with that heavy bullet. I also heard someone running the berger 215s and had impressive results form the little 308.
I’m running a 300 WM with 208 ELDM and 6.8 Western with 175 TGK. Both have been fantastic for elk. I know they will expand slower speed, but I think 1600 per second is a good cut off for these bullets.
Should try 300prc with Berger 245gr Elite hunter bullets 8 twist Shilen Select Match ss bbl. Shot this combo @1680yds on steel buffalo. Very accurate and plenty of retained energy.
Excellent presentation Guy !!! I have used the Hornady 220 grain RN Interlock SP out of a 30-06 at 2500 fps muzzle velocity on Whitetail Deer here in Missouri in the Woods. Shot a Big doe straight on at around 60 yards the bullet exited between the rear legs. She dropped right there without a twitch !!!
I am in my 70's, a Vietnam veteran, Contractor, Law Enforcement and Hunter, and every time I hear people talk about "light rifles" I laugh. I love the 30-06 case because of its versatility and have never found the need for anything else (25-06, .270, 30-06 and 35 Whelen) of course there are MANY others but these are my favorites and can hunt anything I want with these. I don't like short barrels, don't worry about the weight and can still hump the terrain................MAN UP!!!
In my experience ive seen 30-06 with 220 RN in the big woods of Michigan where vast majority of shots are 75 yards and in with the occasional 150 yard shot. Hunting those same conditions with my 300 wm ive learned that I am best suited to bonded 180 grain bullets to avoid over expansion and poor penetration.
Ahh... That makes sense. The 300 magnum at close range has a real high impact velocity. Yes, I like your solution. Another way to go of course is with an "unleaded" bullet like the Hornady CX, the Barnes TTSX, or Nosler's E-Tip. They hold up real well to high impact velocity.
I'm interested in the heavy for caliber bullets because I think they punch well above their weight, as demonstrated in the downrange performance of the 308 & 30-06. I don't need a magnum if a standard or short action cartridge will work. What I'm curious about is how that 212gr bullet will do in a 308 out a 24" barrel. It was only 200~fps slower than the 06. How much ground can be made up with an extra 8" or barrel? If the 308 can gain even 25fps/in, it will be near enough to the bigger cartridge as makes almost no difference.
Well, it's going to get closer. 25 fps seems like a reasonable estimate. Sadly my 24" 308 doesn't have a fast enough twist rate to stabilize those big 212's or I'd give them a try.
Thank you for loading and testing "heavy-for-.308 Win" type bullets. That is greatly appreciated. Although I really wish you would have tested the .308 in a 1:10 twist rifle, instead of the 1:7. The 1:10 are fairly common for .308, but 1:7 is pretty much just some one off specialty. Not really relevant to 98% of the people out there. Still, at least we have some safe loads to consider.
What you mentioned on Bull elk vs cow/smaller elk also applies in spades to black bear....they just get so much bigger through the chest-way more muscle. 150# to 300# is one thing, but when they get over 500# they're getting into grizzly size. I know quite a few guys who like their 45-70's for that...although the 30 calibers tend to be the favorite.
I use 210 gr. Nosler ablr in my .300 wsm. I had it throated so it runs a coal just shy of 3.2”. With h4350, I’ve found an accurate load at 2860 fps out of the 26” barrel. Some would say it’s heavy for caliber, I think it’s just right!
@@guyminer3168 yes sir! I seen that! When I was first scouring the net for load recipes and any kind of data, I came across your name on the nosler reloading forum. There was plenty of good info on there and a big thanks to the guy that goes by the name Dr. Mike, I think! I believe it was he who posted lots of quick load info! It was super helpful in my search for a reference point to starting charges with various powders. Mind sharing what brass where you using and primer?
200 grain Sierra game kings in 30-06. Getting 2700 ft/sec with RL-16 from a 22” barrel. About to try Ramshot Hunter and see if it tightens the groups up
Great! That 200 gr Sierra is a fine bullet. I've been using Ramshot Hunter for 178's and 180's in my 30-06 for a couple of my last hunting seasons. It's doing great! I haven't tried it yet with 200's.
Thought about that - but I wanted to use the same calculator for both bullets - and the 220 gr RN doesn't fit the G7. So, made a choice and went with it. If I was using two different high BC bullets, yes, I'd use the G7 model for sure.
Thanks for this!! Ive been considering the high BC heavy .30 like 190 ABLR or now the 212 ELDX for my 30-06. In the mindset of if the 143 gr ELDX is good at similar velocity then the heavy should better, right?
That's the way I see it. Gavin clobbered a mule deer buck with the 212 ELD-X a few years ago. Worked great! I haven't taken game with the 212 yet (nor the 190 ABLR) but the 178 ELD-X did great for me on cow elk and a buddy of mine has had great results from the 212 ELD-X on elk...
We were really comparing the two different bullets at three velocity levels, not so much the cartridges themselves. My 24" 308 is often quite close to my 24" 30-06 for velocity, particularly with 168 grain and lighter bullets.
@@guyminer3168 Well I agree to all you said. My 24" 308 runs well up to 300 yard for European game even for heavy wild boars and elks. But for more punch in shorter distances I prefer the old 9,3x62 Mauser in a 20" short barrel Savage... for me it's one of the best guns.
@@guyminer3168 It's really an interesting round but it's not the best for all situations. There're lots of cartridges will similar power an nock down power. We should know that a well expanding .270 or .30 cal provides a great wound channel as a thicker bullet. So it depends on what you like better. I do like both and earth for different situations. Hunting pigs in the bush and expecting short shooting distances I prefer the heavy Mauser round. Hunting light weight game in open land scape I go for 308 or 270 win. There're so many nice rounds. So I'm not really the guy with only one gun.
That full stock rifle sure is pretty. When I was a kid and first saw a full stock rifle I wasn’t too keen on it. But they sure have grown on me in my older years. I may have to break down and buy a full stock rifle of some sort.
I like it, and the family history with it having been built by my grandfather right after WWII, for my father who was still serving... It's mine now, and I treasure it.
@@guyminer3168 I had the privilege if shooting a couple of Styer Luxus Mannlicher rifles around 1980. A good friend had two, one in .270 and the other in 30.06, both with Leupold scopes. The most impressive looking rifles I have ever shot. Accuracy with handloads was outstanding and the wood and craftsmanship were in a league all of their own! The polished deep blue barrels - oh my...
@guyminer3168 this was great, love that grizzly with the 200g in an 06. I took a 435lb black bear back in 2013 using a 220g RN in my 06. Broke both shoulders, found it on the inside of the hide. Shot was at 20 yards and the bullet lost about 100g of weight. I think breaking through both shoulders had a lot to do with that. Would love to see a video on 35 whelen. Especially with these newer Bullets and powders it’s a new animal.
Cut my big game teeth on the '06 and 180 grain Core-Lokts. Although I have all three, I tend to gravitate towards my .300 Weatherby as the favorite .30 cal. That's both a practical and a sentimental choice.
@@guyminer3168 That Mark V in a Sporter or the Deluxe model is a beautiful rifle. There's just something about the bond that forms between me with that organic wood, the feel, the heritage, (I own four) that's not quite the same with synthetic stocks. I dunno, guess I'm kinda funny that way when it comes to my rifles.
Colt Gov't Model 45 1911 for my entire law enforcement career. I did often carry a 357 magnum J-frame S&W as a backup gun and used a 2.5" K frame Model 19 S&W time to time as a plain-clothes detective. I had that old Model 19 on my belt in this video. Still a great old revolver.
I load 180 grain round nose interlocks for my 7600, it's a 30-06 and I guess most would consider 180 heavy for the 30-06 since most people use 150-165 grain. When you're a dogger and a snow tracker like I am, you want the weight and momentum of the heavier bullet to get through the brush and the deer at least than ideal shots alot of time. Multiple shots and hits on a deer, bear or moose are the norm for people who hunt like I do here in the Northeast; the 180 grain round nose interlocks get the job done.
I've never seen RN Interlocts, I'll have to try to find some. I've used the 150 grain RN Corelocts in my .270 to take around a half dozen moose and 50 deer, and about the same amount of kills using the 180 grain version in my 06. I have a moose tag in my pocket this season, and some 180 grain SP Interlocts in the 06' just cause thats all I could find.
@@bushleague3472 I don't know if they make them in factory loads but if you're a reloader you should be able to find them. I got about 800 of em but I'm up here in Canada
@@FurandFowl9 Where in Canada? I'm from Alberta, and mainly a bush stillhunter/ tracker as well. I use a canoe to do river hunts in the early season, which is mostly bush hunting but with occasional long shots near the river. I dont reload, but am thinking I should probably start.
The first 30-06 I ever shot was a Win. 670, with an old wire reticle 3-9. I got it from a pawn shop for my middle brother. The least expensive ammo available was Sears, rebranded Winchester, 180 gr round nose. That rifle loved that ammo. Put a whole box into an 1 1/2" circle traced on a poster board off a rolled up comforter on top of an old concrete bench, pretty much as fast as I could shoot and load the magazine. Those long bearing surfaces many times group better than the boat tails, but your shoulder, if you weren't a die hard duck hunter like I was back then shooting the double x magnums from an 1100 with no but pad, might have gotten tired. Unfortunately, my younger brother "gifted" it to a friend after my middle brother's death.😢 I still like the 180 RNs and shoot them from my sporterized Eddystone and they group about the same at 100 for me, also in my Garand, with adjustable gas plug. Where I hunt, most shots are under 150yds. The last hog I shot with the Garand using some old Rem 180 Core-Lokt RN, from the old green and white box, dropped like a rock with both shoulders perforated at about 85 yards. Have not had a chance to take a deer with either, as I take many different firearms afield, but I don't think the 180s would be "too much". We may find out this season.
Nothing fancy. I have a fixed 6x Leupold with the LR dot reticle on my Remington 700 30-06. I've taken elk at 405 yards with it, as well as several other game animals in that 300 - 400 yard range. I've shot long range quite a bit, but for hunting I prefer to be within 400 yards. Closer if possible. The 30-06 in this video still has the 1970's vintage 2-7x Redfield.
I don't have any complaints about 220 gr 30-06 loads. Where I've lived and hunted in ID and NM, the standard is 180 gr Core-Lokt, probably more to do with what's available at local stores and economics. When I hunted with 220's it's when I was starting to reload on a Lee Challenger in Idaho.

It's interesting that, for the 220 gr 308, the Hornaday manual lists a max load for varget at 40.1 gr and 2200 fps using a 22 inch barrel. However, you achieved the same velocity, with the same load, using a 16 inch barrel. Makes you wonder if their listed velocities are a bit conservative or maybe you just don't lose a lot of velocity when it comes to these extremely heavy for caliber loads. What powder charge were you using for the reduced velocity loads that you shot the gel block with?
It seems like this Hornady Eld-x 212gr bullet in a 30-06 actually out performs many factory 180gr cup and core 300 win loads. Said bullets give the good old 06 new life. I may try this myself.
@duckwacker8720 I'll agree with you that it's slower. However, when it comes to down range performance, the 212gr maintains its speed and kinetic energy over a longer period of time because a 212gr high BC has less drag than a traditional flat base cup and core bullet. Yes a .300 win mag with a traditional flat base cup and core bullet is still going to spit out faster than a 30-06 with a high bc 212gr the .300 Win mag with a flat base bullet has more drag, and it's going to lose velocity and kinetic energy sooner. Guys who reload 30-06 and use these high bc bullets are also getting pretty good velocities. Anywhere from 2600 to high 2700fps. I wouldn't discount 30-06.
Great video y’all I would like to see results though of a longer barrel 308 with 1/10 or 1/8 twist I understand the concept in Gavin’s short barrel 308 but to me any 308 shorter than 20 inches just cuts the legs right out from under it.thanks again and y’all keep up the great work God bless
In my win 70 300 wsm with a 24 inch barrel. The 212s are clocking 2865 fps with RL 26. 2925 fps was easy but was not that accurate My 30-06 easily hits 2750 using RL 22 and a max charge from the Nosler manual.
As an avid .308 connoisseur the more data and specs I learn on .300prc more I’m dyin to pull trigger…engage pun…my 6.5prc waypoint is great for the price of admission…I looked up the cost of components and seems like I got a deal…what it does on a jug at 200yrds I can’t imagine .300…my 7mm mag 700 adl was 1st rifle and hope to start with blueprinting action and do full custom proof barrel maybe 7saum…love hearin yer knowledge guy. It all goes in the braniual archives…
I shoot the 30-06 with a 178 gr ELD-X and Superformance with 59.1 gr, which shoot well for me. I suggest working up to that load if someone wants to try it.
What is your opinion about the 6.5 140 bullet at around 2650 on bull elk then? A lot of guys doing that these days, and youth too. For me it just isn't enough for consistent ethical kills.
I don't know yet... Haven't shot an elk with anything that light yet. However I too am seeing and hearing of a lot of great elk kills with cartridges that were once thought of as "deer only." Proper shot placement, putting it into the vitals... That's important. Gavin just cleaned up in Africa with a 6.5 using a 156 gr Berger bullet. Kudu and gemsbok were taken, they're roughly elk sized critters. I'm slowly shifting my opinion to be more open-minded about the use of less powerful cartridges on elk. I can't ignore all the good folks who tell me that they've clobbered elk with their 243, 6mm Rem, 257 Roberts, 25-06, 257 Wby, 6.5 Creed, etc...
@@guyminer3168 That 6.5 SS Gavin was using is hits with a lot of velocity and energy. I'd have no problem with it on elk at any range I shoot. It is when the energy levels start dipping below the 1500 mark that i draw the line, but I seem to be in the minority these days it seems. I'm packing the 220 in the 06 and a 175 in a 280 for still hunting the woods this year. Hoping for minimal meat damage.
Thanks! I'm glad for the opportunity to do some stories with UR.
And we are grateful to have you on the team!
Love that 30-06. I have two 1903's and one war time Mauser sporters.
I love my old mauser sporter too. It is still a tack driver it will shoot 3 shots rubbing at 100 yards. You gotta love those old guns.😊
Full stock rifles are just candy to my eyes.
I have loved that particular rifle since I was a child. Because of it, I have always had a soft spot for full-stocked rifles.

They're terrible.
That 30-06 is a beautiful rifle but 308 and 300 prc are my choices
I love .308 and 300 WM. I’m open to 300 PRC but don’t wanna buy that brass and dies.
I want to see a test on 300 Norma Magnum.
I like Guy's videos ..always interesting to watch .
Thanks!
How fast could you push the 212 grain bullet out of a 308?
my 300 PRC loves Hornady's Atip 230 gr high BC bullet, ADG brass, with 78.6 gr Retumbo. 2910 fps. Can't do that with a 300 WM.
Sure you can. I shoot the 215 bergers at 2975 out of a 300wm. It will do the same with the 230 at 2915fps. @@joelobryan1212

Taking the 220gr RN on a Maine Black Bear hunt next year. 30-06, StaBall 6.5.
Good luck 👍
The bullet should do a fine job! Best of luck on your bear hunt.
I just love listening to Guy talk about guns.
I really appreciate the gel results from the low velocity ELDX. Gives me much more confidence in my (faster) 178 gr ELDX .308 load.
The 178 ELD-X did great for me in January this year, on elk. 405 yards from the 30-06.

Very good video. Interesting and informative. Great to see the old man too. Thank you sir!
😊
By far and away, most of my game has been shot with "normal" bullet weights. 165's in the 308 and 30-06, and 115's from the 25-06.
In 1980 I went down to buy a 30-06 but they sold it before I got there. I bought the 270 and just like you I have been shooting Winchester power points for most of the game I have taken ie normal bullets 😂
I have watched this video twice already and just noticed that doe at 9:50 minutes into the video just hanging out at the range
Great show!
I use 160 gr HOR RN in my 6.5 mauser, 175gr in my 7mm Rem mag and 280 Rem and they all work great on deer even though the last 2 are my moose rifles.
Yes, the 175 has a great reputation in the 7mm cartridges, I used one on a big bull elk years ago. The 160 Hornady RN is just a classic for the 6.5's.
Man! Great video Guy! I'm taking my Africa trip (in your honor) in 30 days. Of course using -06 shooting solid copper 175grn Barnes for plains game slam and a 375 Ruger using 300grn Barnes. Can't wait to send ya the results!
Excellent! Best of luck on your hunt. :)
Hello guy nice to see you doing your thing again😊
Howdy! :)
Excellent. Thank you.
Mostly with the 308 and 30-06, I too have used 165's. They do great. This was just an example of how heavier bullets perform.
@@guyminer3168 And perform they did. Liking the benefits of the heavy high bc bullet. Encouraging to see lower velocity expansion in gel.
Medium weight is best for hunting.
The 300 wind drag is still my king of my 30 cals!
Thx Guy. You put alot of work into this video. It proves 30 cals have versatility.
You're welcome! Versatile? Yup. I've shot ground squirrels & rockchucks with my 30-06, as well as elk, grizzly, and more... It works.
Awesome job Guy!! Hope to see you in the Elk woods this year.
Shhh.... I've got an archery elk tag this year...

I enjoy the inerlock on deer in my 308 but ill be switching to bonded bullets from now on. Seen way to many videos of the eldx coming apart in gel
Interesting. Ours have held together well at high velocity and low. But, bonded bullets are a good thing. I've had some great hunts with them.
Good stuff as always Guy!
Thanks!
Excellent!
@@guyminer3168 Thank you Guy, I'll check them out.

Nice full stock 30-06!
Thanks! I like it. Have been hunting with it already this year.

A good 165 or 180 will handle most hunting situations. That's what I use most often.
With my 300rum I get 3250fps with the 212eldx. It’s a laser beam with a lot of energy.
That is the traditional old bullet for the wonderful 6.5x55. Glad to learn that it's doing well for you.
@@guyminer3168 Thx 👍
Good morning buddy
Just saw this.
Stay safe, vigilant and happy shooting
great video... would have liked to see a 308 with a comparable barrel length to the 30-06 and see how close they would be.
That's another great alternative. We've covered the Barnes TSX and TTSX a bit, but not enough. Working on more stories about those all-copper bullets.

@guyminer3168 yea I was also impressed. Getting around 2850 with the 150s. And bout 2640 with the 175s. Them 2 loads take care of all my whitetails hunting needs
Have had excellent results on cow elk with ELDX 148 grain in 270
They can work well. I took a cow elk with my 30-06 using the 178 gr ELD-X in January. Cool hunt, great meat.
@@davecollins6113 and I still want to see a fair comparison.
@@tacticalrabbit308 me too.

I’ve shot a number of large of african plains game with 220gr Hornady Round Nose in my .30-06, and it served me well until I could afford a larger rifle. This included a number of large Cape and Livingstone Eland.
Eland are huge! Thanks for that report. That good old 220 gr bullet has performed well for many.
200+ grains is a lot for the 308 Win, but it will work!
I’m running a 300 WM with 208 ELDM and 6.8 Western with 175 TGK. Both have been fantastic for elk. I know they will expand slower speed, but I think 1600 per second is a good cut off for these bullets.

Excellent presentation Guy !!!
I have used the Hornady 220 grain
RN Interlock SP out of a 30-06 at 2500 fps muzzle velocity on Whitetail Deer here in Missouri in the Woods. Shot a Big doe straight on at around 60 yards the bullet exited between the rear legs. She dropped right there without a twitch !!!
Excellent! I do like those 220 gr Hornady bullets...
I hope all things are well
What you mentioned on Bull elk vs cow/smaller elk also applies in spades to black bear....they just get so much bigger through the chest-way more muscle. 150# to 300# is one thing, but when they get over 500# they're getting into grizzly size. I know quite a few guys who like their 45-70's for that...although the 30 calibers tend to be the favorite.
Ya, some black bear get huge!
I had a terrific 300 WSM load using the 210 Berger VLD at 2810 fps. So accurate!
@@guyminer3168 have you used the 200 Sierra for anything?
These fast twist PRC cartridges would make interesting candidates for subsonic loads.
Hmmm... Interesting.
You should really use the G7 BC for the ELD-X it's a more accurate calculation on boat tail bullets.
I appreciate your comparison very well. But - as mentioned - before a 308 with a longer barrel and faster twist would show best results in velocity.
@@juan-jose7163 - I am seriously considering turning one of my 30-06 rifles into a 9.3x62...
@@josesuro3981 those must have been wonderful rifles!
Im going to try those in my 06
Fun fact, the Swiss 7.5x53.5 was the cartridge that started the 30 caliber craze. The 30-40 was inspired by that Swiss cartridge
35 Whelen... Yes, quite a cartridge! Congrats on your bear!
Great class. Thx
Using 300 PRC 212 grain ELD-X, Bergara HMR 26"
Cut my big game teeth on the '06 and 180 grain Core-Lokts. Although I have all three, I tend to gravitate towards my .300 Weatherby as the favorite .30 cal. That's both a practical and a sentimental choice.
I get it. :) That's why I usually hunt with a walnut stocked 30-06 or 25-06. I just really like them, and have for a long time.

That Mark V in a Sporter or the Deluxe model is a beautiful rifle. There's just something about the bond that forms between me with that organic wood, the feel, the heritage, (I own four) that's not quite the same with synthetic stocks. I dunno, guess I'm kinda funny that way when it comes to my rifles.
Great video Guy! When you first got on the police department, did you carry a wheel gun? 38 Spcl or 357 Mag?
Colt Gov't Model 45 1911 for my entire law enforcement career. I did often carry a 357 magnum J-frame S&W as a backup gun and used a 2.5" K frame Model 19 S&W time to time as a plain-clothes detective. I had that old Model 19 on my belt in this video. Still a great old revolver.
@@guyminer3168 Very cool! Like Archie Bunker, "Those were the days."
Used a 175 grain Barnes bullet in my 308. Shot a hog at 125 yards. Gelatinized the internal organs. 30 caliber bullets are no joke.
There's a reason why 100+ years later we're still hunting with our 30 cals. Congrats on the hog!
Unfortunately, my younger brother "gifted" it to a friend after my middle brother's death.😢
I still like the 180 RNs and shoot them from my sporterized Eddystone and they group about the same at 100 for me, also in my Garand, with adjustable gas plug.
What reticle/scope are you running on your 30-06s for hunting when using it at some decent ranges with these 212 eldx?
Those 220's pack a whollop for sure.

The 30-06 is beautiful
Thanks. It's treasured. A family rifle.
Wish hornady still made the 7mm round nose bullets in 150 and 175gr
It's interesting that, for the 220 gr 308, the Hornaday manual lists a max load for varget at 40.1 gr and 2200 fps using a 22 inch barrel. However, you achieved the same velocity, with the same load, using a 16 inch barrel. Makes you wonder if their listed velocities are a bit conservative or maybe you just don't lose a lot of velocity when it comes to these extremely heavy for caliber loads. What powder charge were you using for the reduced velocity loads that you shot the gel block with?
We have a huntable elk population where i live in northern Michigan, huge animals.
Maybe a 250 grain for the 30-378 Weatherby mag.
That is one heck of a cartridge!
It seems like this Hornady Eld-x 212gr bullet in a 30-06 actually out performs many factory 180gr cup and core 300 win loads. Said bullets give the good old 06 new life. I may try this myself.
212's are way too slow
Cody expres .30 or .308 barnes suprem?
I wonder how close the 300 wsm could come with the 212’s if loaded to the standard action or shortish 6.8 western action length.
My 300 WSM was very accurate with 210 gr Berger VLD's at 2810 fps in a Winchester Model 70. I'd think that the Hornady 212's would likely be similar.
In my win 70 300 wsm with a 24 inch barrel. The 212s are clocking 2865 fps with RL 26. 2925 fps was easy but was not that accurate My 30-06 easily hits 2750 using RL 22 and a max charge from the Nosler manual.
Thanks for the info, I do own a 300 prc. I love it but I wouldn’t mind having a 300 wsm.
