The 849 is my favorite ball point which I have been using for over 20 years. I use the fisher space pen refill; you need to measure the refills, because the fisher has the adaptor which needs to be cut down. Well done review.
I have to say that it's the best ball point pen ever ! I love to draw with it and the viscosity of the ink is perfect for subtile shading. I can use it like a graphite pencil with the XS point. Proud to be swiss when I see good quality like that !
Hi Stephen ... great suggestion for drawing. Yet, after reading your comment a few days ago I looked for an XS refill but could not find a Goliath version. So I just want to confirm, if you don’t mind, that the one you are referring to is the Ecridor XS ?
Right on, Stephen! Being Swedish myself, I was in need of a new ballpoint today and went out to buy me another Ballograf. It is a Swedish designed and made ballpoint that has been around since long before I was born and a very good writing tool. But then, as I stood in the pen and paper shop contemplating which variant to choose, I turned around and saw the Caran d'Ache display. OK, so they cost between 2x and 4x the price of a Ballograf, but just for the style I think they are worth it. I settled for the 849 "Original" (in a silvery-grey spotted pattern) and it is just great! Such a nice and quite unusual little gem. And as it is an all-metal product, I expect it to last (provided I don't loose it). (By the way, the over-pressure cartridges that the reviewer compares this with, are not to my liking. I had one of those "space/under-water" pens before and it blotted ink and it also had low capacity.)
@@JuanNequals1 Oh man sorry I just saw your comment (2years later....) it is in fact a goliath fine. Sorry for the long wait, hope you did managed to find something on your side :/ Best wishes
@@rasmuswittsell10 Yes only trust Caran d'Ache ! I never had any sort of problem with them, the only reason I had to buy new ones is because I lost them -_- this is the pen I have on me all the time, like a swiss army knife.
I love pens. I am low level. On my work, writing is functional. I am parkers ballpoint. South Africa not your walk in range. Brought into my work. The 849 has taken over. I will get a stand in. My Parker refills wirk 100%. I have stopped looking for a pen. I love managing replacing the refill. Makes it different. On my hand thumbs up. Thx
The broad refill is one of the best ballpoints I can think of. It flows nicely and writes with a thick ink layer on the paper. I love the ergonomics of this relatively thin design.
I use Fisher space pen cartridge inside Caran d'Ache Ecridor pen. By putting a polished stainless steel rod with diameter of 4.6 mm x 8 mm long placing between Fisher cartridge and the push mechanism and it works nicely. Caran d'Ache 849 should work too by this way.
I've had a 2mm pencil with the same look for close to 30 years now, found it again some months ago. Didn't know they made a ballpoint pen also, tempted to get one now...
I love mechanical pencils and I am about yo buy the Caran D' Ache 849 Fluo Line Yellow. Would you mind to confirm to me whether this yellow color is truly fluorescent like yellow with a little bit of green, or it is a flat yellow? I am worried to receive a flat yellow mechanical pencil, because the color that I like is true fluorescent yellow. And in my opinion fluorescent yellow looks yellow but the shades tend to look green.
Lovely video, I really enjoy the insight you give on all the pens you review. One small thing though: Could you please spent a little bit time writing with them/ doodling? That's the main thing I would like to see when considering to buy a pen. Greetings from Berlin!
. I always put a very good German pen refill in my ballpoint pens . That German ballpoint pen refill brand is called *"Schmidt Easyflow 9000 M"*. This refill writes very ... very well, in my opinion better than the Parker and Caran d'Ache refills. In a Parker pen you just have to put that German refill in the pen ( it has the same shape and lenght of a Parker refill, so there's no issue ) . It's somewhat less easy If you want to put the German refill in a Caran d'Ache pen, because you have to remove the plastic end with some pliers and put another plastic end on top of the refill, in order it can be adjusted inside the Caran d'Ache pen. It's not a difficult operation but you have to know how to do it. Another very nice German refill is called *"Schneider pen Slider 755"*. They both are very nice brands if you want quality in your pens. If I had to choose between them I'd pick out the "Schmidt Easyflow 9000 M". You have them in black and blue ink, and they can found in "Amazon" and in "Ebay". .

@@mozdieloz3826 Hello Stephen. It has been a pleasure to inform you about those German refills. They both worth trying out, and if you'd ask me I'd go for the *"Schmidt Easyflow 9000 M"* refill. It writes really smoothly and its colour tone is far darker than the ink of other refill brands ( the black ink is really black and not black -grey, and the blue ink is nice and dark too ), besides, the medium refill writes medium strokes and not thinner nor thicker lines. I appreciate great differences bettwen this refill and others of very well -known brands, and I've tried out many ballpoint refills from different brands since I was a child.
@@carlosespana8759 I will let you know if I get 1 of the refills or a pen, I like dark blue ink, so was pleased you said that. I love Papermate original metal refills, but I think the ink used to be darker about 30 odd years ago, than they write know!
Dont like the fact that you need to buy only goliath refill for this ballpoint pen. Its not working good with another refills + goliath price is expensive
The clicker button fits very loose in the barrel. If you look at it from the top you'll see a massive gap. If you get the light to reflect off the barrel you'll also see paint runs on the laquered finish. The style is cool, but not impressed with the quality.
The refills are easy to find if you look at any site that sells pens and carries Caran d'Ache. Fountain Pen Hospital, Fahrney's Pens, Cult Pens, Pen Chalet, Fontoplumo, et cetera. There is an actual bricks and mortar store twenty minutes from my home that sells both pens and refills. As of late 2019, refills are more in the $8 to $11 range. Pricey but they're supposed to last a long time (I don't know, I don't own an 849 ballpoint). Is it too much to ask for those individuals arrogant enough to post reviews on UA-cam to actually know what the fuck they are blathering on about?

Finally a review of the 849. I was thinking about getting one of these.
Thanks for the input very helpfull. I was looking for a replacement for the parker jotter.
Sal what would you recommend?
They even make fountain pen version. Grip section is incredibly narrow but takes international cartridges and writes really nice.

Yes. It slides off

With a goliath refill you can write up to 600 A4 pages. With a Parker refill you can go up to 250 pages
Nice video Sal ... I collected pens for years and have a nice collection but I don't like pens with a hard to find refill ...
Rick Temmen thats true. An edc pen must have a common refill. Parker g2 refill is the most common out there.
I bought one in blue. It's too small for my hands. Insize, it kinda reminds of a mini golf pencil.
Now there's a XB version of the 849…something like the Jotter XL.
I’ve not seen it yet. Link? It’s not the metal-x is it?
Maybe the 846?
does the refill fit with jotter ?
Could you do a review on a cross pen I have 3 but I want more perspectives if I want to buy another one or not.

I wish it was steel instead of aluminum. Aluminum is really probe to dents when dropped
Maybe the ecridor is steel?
My imagination or do the medium and bold fisher space pens write smoother than a Pilot G2?
It's your imagination.
Do BIRO©️ make pens still?
Great video.
muji ball points puts this one to shame, both in price and quality
If it includes a free refills then the refill is for free so it doesn’t help the price at all you should’ve said it includes a refill
Thanks captain autismo.
