In 1990 my friend knew I was way into riding dirt bikes and was about to start racing when he gave me a Gary Baily video to watch. In that video Gary explains twisting the throttle should feel more like twisting a door knob to open a door. My elbows have been out ever since! I’m a big fan Ryan watched you win at Unadilla in 1995 over factory Honda’s Steve Lamson!
Ryan, your vids are the best. I'm an old guy getting back in the saddle now that the kids are mostly gone. My first bike was a KDX and I just recently bought a 1998 and 2001. Back in the day I was a pretty good rider. When I got on one now, being 56 and 25 years since i've rode one it felt weird. I thought at first maybe i'm just too old, lost the sack for the game. My arms were tired after riding. I remember from back in the day "if you're sitting down you're doing it wrong" but the bike and terrain was clearly in control. Not so much this video but one of your other ones talks about the bike pulling on your arms. I never remember feeling that as a kid. Honestly, about to quit the whole idea of having two bikes so I can ride with my kids. Your videos about body position, this one about grip, and all of them have turned everything around. Heading out now to go practice getting my technique corrected. Just started watching these videos, didn't realize how bad my body placement on the bike was. Insane the difference it makes! Blew my mind a couple days ago when I corrected a couple things. Even going slow it made a big difference on the bikes balance/control and overall feel for the bike.

I was doing a practice section during a gncc race awhile back and ryan was there. The section had huge beach ball sized rocks mixed in sand. Never saw anyone behind me, next thing you know here comes the rhyno. Passed me like I was a spectator in a lawn chair. I knew immediately I was on the wrong track. Lol

Thanks! I want to add a comment.. One thing I do to combat arm pump is bend my hands outwards for a few seconds and it seems to promote a little more blood flow. I know you're not racing anymore but I sure hope you're able to ride now and then. That would be sad if you can't ride. My riding buddy broke his back recently and I'm praying he can recover and still ride.

Bingo! That's my problem I can't even get thru the first lap without instant arm pump. I am doing all the stretching exercise's and still have massive arm pump. We knew that moto X was the most physically demanding sport way back in the 70s and always had that argument with the jocks until they tried riding one lap and found out what it takes to race motorcycles! and shut them up right away.
One style issue I have is having a finger on the front brake. I can ride with two fingers on the clutch, but not the brake. I've had that go haywire a few times with the throttle hitting when I don't want it to or when I don't expect it. Hope you're still making videos!

You just touched on something that I’ve wanted to know for years, where to apply pressure on the bars in a turn. Now I know about using the widest pad part on the bars but can you answer this. In a left hand turn, is the left hand pulling the bars or is the right hand pushing the bar?
I also train martial arts. BJJ and Muay Thai (hobby level). I find that there is a common theme with both sports, in that success, or improvement, is found in the habitual practise of the fundementals.
I know this will sound fucked up, but what about mounting bars backwards if they don't have much sweep? i was mounting new bars and before installing them was holding them backwards and it felt way more natural. i was so close to putting them on that way but thought it would fuck me up. i have a problem with my elbows down having started riding at 37 yrs and nobody telling me what i was doing wrong. i am 50 now and bad habits are hard to break i noticed that with the bend the opposite direction you are automatically in a better position. so, why do they make the bend the wrong way?
i adjusted my handle bars back and then repositioned levers in more then reorentated the lever position after .. but not its in my right hand thumb and top behind nuckels. no wear or any other issues other than next day elbow and inflammation feels like in bonebut pretty sure its viens noving up and close to surface, where I don't want them. are you talkin about flow to your obvious extremities that's a good thing like breathing helps do that thinking probably makes you also not have that flow that you like as well I need to bring my elbows in to ride still allowing an out is going to cause me injuy more so than the one feel now so how do you make yourself keep your shoulders available outward on the top but always conscious to tuck in quicker than you thought (-:?

Been thinking about getting an Enduro or a trials bike for years. The street is boring no matter how much commercials try to trick you into light to light and cafe/coffee shop meander riding Watching your vids almost pushed me over the line to get one.....almost but not yet. No time.🤷
Be like Nike, “Just do it!’ Even better, get an Electric Motion ePure Race trials bike. Put some stumps and logs in your yard and say fuckall to the neighbors bitching day or night 😋
when you get on the bike give her all its got until it hits the top make sure it comes off the needle couple times and bounces on itself and then you should be on just like that super snot! if you like you're in a situation where you are stuck helps you the most that I found get you back to where you want free from thinking self-conscious stuff! ouch😅
okay so how does that work when you're riding singletrack and trees are right there and you have to bring your shoulder and instead of your cuz it causes your hands then especially on my right one and my index to ring finger on the right give me issues serious my left one isn't aware of what is going on with the right and that sucks when I am both aware at the same time they're doing things wrong then my right arm stiffens up and it's not even on the handlebars as my left is in la la land and then I end up just waiting to die... lolol ugh?
Not bad advice, but I could improve on it. Your body position will be different during braking than it is for regular attack-position riding, and I personally don't even use the clutch except for starting. That's all to say that the times you're using your levers will be when your body is sitting and in a different position. Set your levers up for the position in which you use them and adjust your posture to stand/sit correctly. You shouldn't need your levers to do that for you.

It’s not a comment, it’s clinically verified. Anecdotal experiences of toughness don’t have weight. None of those other sports you mention are even close to as tough as motocross. That doesn’t mean they aren’t really demanding on the athletes, but they don’t compare in the slightest when it comes to output. All except for Moto GP last only seconds to minutes of intensity.

This is great advice.
He learned that from Gary Bailey 1987 when he was 14 years old. Bailey always said to regrip and turn the throttle like a doorknob.

Yes. Your bike isn't a gyro so it turns like a car and not a bike, but you need to position yourself like you're riding a bike. Good question

Get an old 2T and ride it slow. The sound will be fast enough.
Ride it slow but in a gear to slow to sound fast asf. Also don't use brakes just rev the bike with clutch into corners and then dump the clutch
