I respect so much of what you said. Especially about the part that people in the streets seen partners, and friends kill each other all the time. That is so true. I've seen it, been in the middle of it, tried to stop one, but you can only get involved so much in two peoples business dealings, before somebody start looking at you sideways. Iived thru that era, in Brooklyn and I'm 48.
Situations like this, probably happened in every hood across the country. Those that didnt see it, are surprised. One of the things people dont realize is how young we were. I look at my sons, when they were 18, 19, 20, and cant imagine them even THINKING, of doing the things I was doing at that age. They looked and behaved like kids, which is what it should be. Meaning, I did at least one thing right, in my life. It also makes me realize that i still was immature, THINKING, I was grown, and had wisdom. I wasnt ready for ANY of it. Looking back, I shouldn't have even been able to DRIVE, doing the dumb shit I was doing.
Money was so easy to get, in the beginning. I remember going to the car auction under the BQE, with older dudes on my block, I was 17. I was getting off the train after taking care of some business, and i ran into them, they was like " what up B, cmon hop in, we going to the auction." They was looking over cars that needed a little work, talking about what it might be worth before the auction. Long story short, I bought my first car, a 1987, Saab 9000, with cash. The car was $11,000 and change. The cash was in my bookbag. They couldnt believe it. Why I say, i shouldnt even have been driving is, I drove the car off the lot, no license, no plates, a few grand left in my bag, gun, plus a QP of weed, for my bro. Not only that, I didnt even take the car straight home and park up till I could get it right, I picked up my dude, he gave me an old expired license plate on a car his man had, and we went straight to a jamaican car audio place in Flatbush, that stayed open late, to get a stereo and speakers put in. I was a kid.
When people watch movies, UA-cam, etc about those times, I dont think they get that a lot of of us, were really kids.
