I absolutely do not get the Lathril-as-Comnander hype. Elf Tribal in particular excels with the wealth of options for Elf-Tutor effects, and Green in general provides endless return-from-GY-to-hand Sorceries (Regrowth being the archetypal example, which has amusingly been power crept by way of casting cost in modern Regrowth-like fare), so playing Lathril in the 99 with the intention of bringing her out when you’re ready to use her is, well, easy. I just don’t consider her serial replayability to be enough of an advantage to pass on an option like Tyvar the Bellicose. (I have a hard time chaining myself to Mono Green, but Selvala, Heart of the Wilds does a good job of tempting me where Ezuri failed to. Maybe it’s my bias towards considering Elf Tribal a better-ramping alternative to Hydra Tribal, but I’ve gotten really leery of trying to go wide when I *can’t* go high. There are so many good Elf Commanders now that I think a bit of the bloom is off the rose, with respect to Lathril. Don’t get me wrong. I’ve engaged in some absolutely nauseating Lathril + Voice of the Woods + Parallel Lives action to bury the table in 7/7 Tramplers while still holding my Convoke Haymaker in reserve, I just question how much Lathril helps you early.
