    I sometimes receive SMS messages from so called couriers like UPS or DHL that they have a package for me and that duties need to be paid for customs to clear it, the phone number is often from Poland and that makes it suspicious because I am in the Netherlands

    I have a 8 character alphanumeric passcode. I use Face ID exclusively to open the phone. On those occasions when asked to enter the passcode. I find a secluded place, usually a bathroom stall, to enter it. That may sound a bit overcautious, some say paranoid, but I feel safer.

    Just a note on Stolen Device Protection. If you happen to be popping into your local network shop for a phone upgrade and you also plan to trade in your device make sure you disable this before you leave home! You may not be able to disable it in the shop and may need to go back home to do so before you can trade in.

    18:25 When I was much younger, I learned something called "common sense". When I was older, I learned that "common sense isn't common". I have always been a firm believer in the concept of "critical thinking". Scammers hate people who use common sense and critical thinking.

    The fact that someone I know was just texting back a reply to such a spam SMS a short while ago makes this kind of content all the more relevant! A lot of folks are unaware of the consequences of such interactions.
    Also I don't think these are the only methods in use. I have also experienced silent calls from strange international locations where the other party remains silent when you say "hello".
    Perhaps there is much more to learn here. More such hack-eductational videos please!

    • @Quince828
      @Quince828 Місяць тому +5

      I’m told that those silent calls are attempts to record your voice and so get into things like your bank which uses voice recognition to verify your identity. Personally I don’t say anything until I hear the other person speak. Or one can use Alexander Graham Bell’s answer of Ahoy!

    • @AlphaGeekgirl
      @AlphaGeekgirl Місяць тому +2

      I never say hello.
      In fact I never answer calls from any number that isn’t already in my contacts list… That is someone I physically know in person
      Once you answer, they put you on the list of “live bait” numbers

    Thanks again for some very important advice! I would definitely not spend this much money on a "phone" that I intended to use only as a PHONE. It would make no sense to use it for that and not take advantage of the convenience of all the apps available. So, any help we can get to make our iPhones more secure is greatly appreciated! Your videos plus a little common sense should help protect us from many of these scammers. Of course, they will always keep looking for new ways and loopholes to access and scam the most vulnerable.

      Thanks for the kind words. As I'm sure you can understand, I have to try and pace the videos at a speed that works for most people. Feedback thus far is that this pace is about right for most people. If, after slowing my voice down in Settings, I'm still too fast for you, I'm afraid there's not much more I can do. Will be sorry to lose you as a subscriber, but I'm sure you can understand that I can't change the pacing of the videos for 1 viewer.

    Great video. Thank you. Two p I know we’re scammed by a caller and decided to call the bank back on their 800 number. Somehow the scammer was able to hack into the banks tel system, so my acquaintances thought they were speaking w the bank. For one person, the bank wasn’t helpful because the scammer had moved the money out of the USA but my other acquaintance got her money back.

    You can lockdown your iCloud account on your phone through Screen Time>Content and Privacy, that requires a different passcode than the one used for the phone. iOS18 will allow you to lock and hide certain apps using biometrics as well.

    I had someone once try to call me to tell me I have a one-time code for my Apple ID when I didn’t request one, so I ignored it. 5 minutes later I received a text about it with the same code TWICE (the second being underlined blue - aka. a link), so I called Apple and they told me it was definitely a theft attempt and I changed my Apple ID password and all my email passwords.

    My Partner recently fell flow to a “Hi Mum” SMS saying this is my new number and can you pay this bill for me. She didn’t show it to me she just told me she was sending money to her son. The simplest way to avoid this is to ask the sender to call you. Luckily she reported it to her banks fraud department who investigated and refunded her.

    • @AlanForkosh
      @AlanForkosh Місяць тому +1

      Notes has a locking option which, like the internal password manager, requires biometric verification or the device passcode or password to unlock. The issue is that unlocking a note unlocks all locked notes. You must remember to relock when you are done.
      Similarly, you can hide photos under biometrics, but you must remember to lock them when you are done.

    A huge part of this problem is that landline, mobile phone and broadband customer and other support services for a U.K. customer base are often based outside of the U.K., such as mobile call centres based in the Philippines and broadband call centres being based in India - in my 23 years living here in the U.K. (I’m Irish myself) I’ve long held for many years that this process of outsourcing should be banned as its leading to these scams, companies serving a U.K. customer base should simply not be allowed to outsource outside of the U.K. - only last year, my next door neighbour back home in the Republic of Ireland was very badly targeted by Indian call centre scammers and only that her sons are IT Experts, the situation would have been much worse, as the police are powerless to act when the scammers are outside of the EU - for similar reasons, my broadband and mobile phone package is sky high and I can’t talk to anyone to change it, which I would be able to do if they had a U.K. call centre
