A great live version of a great song, I was a young mod back then and fancied the arse off Tracie Young, I wasn't over keen on her solo material but I loved her spell in the Style Council, I also missed two good opportunities to see the SC back in 83 and again in 84, i'd seen The Jam four times and at the time i was still a little pissed with Weller for splitting them up.
It's funny that I mentioned this very thing in another video about when PW split up The Jam and the fans were a little pissed off with him as Rick and Bruce knew that without him the band could never really fill that spot. I loved everything that The Jam did, I was not able to see them live but my elder brother did at the Rainbow. My brother already had a good record collection and so I had so many bands to choose from and I loved them all even many metal and punk bands like the early/original Ultravox line up, x-ray spex, UK subs, sham 69, Richard Head and the Voidoids (cool name lol) to name a few. I grew up with such a variety as my older sister was so different and loved Simon and Garfunkel, The Carpenters, Bread and loads of classical too, then my own foray into music led me to early stuff of Level 42, George Benson, Marvin Gaye......yeah what a mix, but I love and appreciate all music except for Rockerbilly style, twangy country and thrash metal! It has been cool sharing stories, have a great day!
@@brandon2912t Thank you for a great comment it's very much appreciated, it's a shame you didn't get to see The Jam they never disappointed live, you mentioned some great bands from the 70s punk era, I played the first Clash album to death back then lol, I listen to so much different music nowadays it's so good having all these different decades to choose from, as a young kid growing up my mom used to listen to The Carpenters which I loved back then and still do, Karen's voice is incredible, I have my parents to thank for turning me on to some real 60s and 70s greats like The Kinks,The Byrds, The Hollies, The Beach Boys, The Shadows, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Jefferson Aeroplane, Mamas and the Papas, The Small Faces and obviously The Beatles just to name a few, from the 70s Steely Dan, The Eagles, The Dooby Brothers, CNS and Young (also his solo stuff), Pink Floyd and Fleetwood Mac to which I love the 60s and 70s material equally again just to name a few so big shout to my parents for that. Again thanks for your comment and you also have a great day.
The Jam were amazing live , huge shock when they split , I feel sorry for Rick and Bruce to this day , they were cast aside in a really shabby way , Weller behaved very dishonestly . The first 2 years of The Council were fabulous but then they went off the boil, Weller was wrapped up with D C Lee ,obsessed with multiculturalism and virtue signalling and seemed to write alot of the songs around their relationship ( around the time of the Cost of Loving album ). It all became a became a bit soppy. I did enjoy the ' Confessions ' album but it was very 'arty farty ' and not to everyone's taste. By then ( 1988/9) they'd lost alot of the Jam following and managed to alienate many fans..the irony being that he split the Jam when they were at their Zenith , yet let the Council blunder on a downward spiral until the record company refused to release their next album which signalled the end. Weller ended the TSC days wearing shorts on stage and growing a moustache and looking like a man who'd lost the plot. My favourite time in music was the last 2 years of The Jam and first 2 of the Council and this record was one of the best of that period.. Still right up there in my top 5 songs ever and I love this version. ( it's actually a huge copy of ' Surrender to the rhythm " by Brinsley Schwarz ' ) Traceys ' voice went superbly with his, she was a real talent and should have gone further . She signed to Wellers Respond label but his ideas of being the next Motown never really caught on. There was an album ' Love the Reason ' by all the artists he signed , I played it to death. By some accounts Tracy was a pain in the arse to work with . This song just reminds me of my favourite era when I was 17 and everything was possible .
I remember seeing Paul Weller on the tube once sitting reading The Socialist Worker newspaper..He got up to get off and i asked him if i could have his paper and he said only if u aint a tory sweet 'eart :)
So fuckin agree with u!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's literally always in my head. "your mind is productive"...best lyric ever. My kids now love it too
this footage is from a programme called switch, 1983, the style council's first live tv appearance backed by tracie and the questions, and danny talbot too.
Nice to see this again. After The Jam split and this 45 came out I thought it was pretty good and there was something good on the way. Unfortunately, for me it wasn't so. I bought a handful of singles, but interest waned. The same year, The Truth were on the rise, after the (temporary) end of Nine Below Zero, and although never fulfilled their promise on vinyl, I did see a couple of times in '83 and were brilliant. Also, Mod-wise, as that seemed to be a lot of his audience (like it or not!) Squire, The Prisoners, The Times were also releasing really great records. Style Council released some really good singles, but to be honest, Weller's solo 'return' in 1990/91 was a welcome one. Merton Mick always under-rated though....
This is such a great performance, good to see Weller finally chilling out after that "spokesman of a generation" rubbish with The Jam. And who's the fella with the mullet??
Loved Paul Weller ever since discovering the Jam back in 1980. This is such a good track, love the studio version its brilliant What ever happened to the cute back-up singer?
I have something to say. I've seen a lot of people saying Paul didn't get good at singing until the 80s... well maybe that's when he came into his own... Maybe some didn't like his style of singing before the 80s but that doesn't mean he wasn't good at it; however, maybe those people just aren't in tune with the more torn down parts of music, I'm not sure, but if you ever became more open-minded as far as music with lowered production values I bet The Jam would be at the tippity top of your list
Was this performance ever released on VHS or DVD? I also wondered if there were videos of artists on Weller's Respond Records, especially the Questions. Good Stuff, Post some more!!!
@Mamasan41 HA!!! Check out Tim Hardins "Tim Hardin 2" from a year before (67') The HEADhunters similarly titled tune! I think he actually got some type of writers credit for this or some other Council classic.
@kellycoleclan hi owen ,i wonder are you related to michelle kelly ,bapper,of ross rd now,i used to go out with her mate denise s..if not,,,it was fun,,best of luck m8
I think the Jam were one of the great british bands, prefer later stuff to earlier punk sounding stuff. As for the Style Council after speak like a child i'd leave it well alone till his solo career.
Tracie Young and Paul sound so good together.
I always preferred Tracie Young on backing vocals to Weller than Dee C. Lee from Wham! Apparently, Tracie is now a radio presenter at Radio Essex.
She is, and iagree
I love both but there’s something very arresting and captivating about Tracie
Welly disbanded the Jam to go very PC and push diversity. Pop music has been used to push agendas
Nice to find the orig with Tracie! Darts luv from UK!😎😎
Tracie Young!!! Oh what an undervalued musician..
What a man, what a band, what a song absolute TRUE LEGEND.
This music, this is what we are missing these days ❤️👍
Great pure llive singing by Paul ..always loved his vocal tone and energy
Wow, never seen that. Great live performance. And Tracey looking particularly sweet. :-)

Nice to see Tracie on backing vocals...she was the one who built Jack's House...
The seething undercurrent in Weller delivery, brillant!
A borderline sociopath that had and probably still does, mental health issues.
I remember seeing Paul Weller on the tube once sitting reading The Socialist Worker newspaper..He got up to get off and i asked him if i could have his paper and he said only if u aint a tory sweet 'eart :)
Omg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hope you replied ‘ I’m not a Tory , I vote for National Front, can I get your newspaper’ ….. he does have a sense of humour, apparently…
perfect song. love this live sound.
this is quality art in the form of music.
Tracie has such a great voice.
they are just brilliant... always bring out the fond memory of the 80's
The aggression in Weller is wonderful
I LOVE that about him...
So right. Here he was the the embodiment of youthful restlessness and vigour. Totally gorge.
"This is the modern world"
I really fancied her back then. She used to be a DJ on local radio, I believe.
Tracie is such a doll.
Absolutely love this song so fresh and catchy song
The bass is total class.
best pop song ever
So fuckin agree with u!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's literally always in my head. "your mind is productive"...best lyric ever. My kids now love it too
Absolutely right! I will never, ever EVER get tired of this song. Ever.
This is so wonderful.
He is AMAZING Paul Weller
Remember the Video with Talbot on top pf a Double Decker bus. Where has my life gone!

Most brilliant artist

such a good song!
Tracie ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Brilliant. Thanks for the lovely post.
sensacional perfeito
1983. . . . .Weller hadn't lost the pissed off facial expressions from The Jam yet, that will take another 6 months
this footage is from a programme called switch, 1983, the style council's first live tv appearance backed by tracie and the questions, and danny talbot too.
It's Mick.
LOL - don't hold back, mate! All the best from Nashville...
Perfect 80’ Mod stage movement!
the best sound around
Could have sworn he was singing "Speak like a hedgehog" when I was at school.
Ha ha ha ha ha !! 🤣
Yeah i can see what you mean 12 years later ha🤣🤣🤣
Classic! Thanks for posting!
I watched the video and just had to have that striped jumper from C&A!
The coolest girl singer of the decade that was the 80s Tracie
The Best Male Since Jesus Walked the earth
If only her mic were on.
great tune, got to be redone soon, I have a feeling a pop star will remix/copy it!

Paul looks cool here as well
Their voices really mesh don't they? Effortless harmonizing @ 1:08.
You think that’s difficult, or even noteworthy? Jesus.
i only come here for tracie lol
Love it

This is such a great performance, good to see Weller finally chilling out after that "spokesman of a generation" rubbish with The Jam. And who's the fella with the mullet??
Lets not beat around the bush. the man is a god xx
Nice! ;)
Top-class Northern-soul ! 👌
This is absolutely amazing! Weller is a fucking genius!
Christ, you’re easily pleased.
@@wattage2007 Correct - not an original talent - more a skilled artisan.
So ahead of his years.
Thin sound of the keyboards & bass are a shame, but all in all a hint of greatness that was to follow.
Matches his haircut at the time too.
considering there was only like 4 months between the last jam single and first style council single ( this being it ), i'm not surprised, lol.
What happened to young Tracie...she was awlright....is she still kickin around...?
Loved Paul Weller ever since discovering the Jam back in 1980. This is such a good track, love the studio version its brilliant What ever happened to the cute back-up singer?
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tracie_Young
stunning..
Same here!
@THEGGTV - And the best thing he ever did!!! The Style were a great talent, but none other than Paul Weller the man, himelf!! =D
I have something to say.

agreed
He didn't get good at singing ever - tone deaf really but wrote good lyrics.
the mike shadow on wellers shirt is dancing!
fucking blinding!
Cheers
is that paul weller?
cool shit man!
There's no Paul Weller today the music was better back in the day !!!
watever happened to tracey/..she had 1 hit, the house that jack built....
is that the picture sleeve for the Questions "Price You Pay" single in the background and one of the Barry twins on the bass?
Paul Weller going for that Alfred E. Neuman of Mad magazine look...
Was this performance ever released on VHS or DVD? I also wondered if there were videos of artists on Weller's Respond Records, especially the Questions. Good Stuff, Post some more!!!
I cant find any
@Mamasan41 HA!!! Check out Tim Hardins "Tim Hardin 2" from a year before (67') The HEADhunters similarly titled tune! I think he actually got some type of writers credit for this or some other Council classic.
She practically undressed him with the. eyes
っていうか、これはトレイシーのステージであって、ウェラーはあくまでゲストなのだ。
This song is just *"Surrender to the Rhythm"* by Brinsley Schwarz...
Wasn't Tracie only 17yrs or 18 yrs old here? Why does she look older than Paul?
The Womack backing singers are cool too!! C'mon (splinta 73)
H ah aha Then life began
I hear this and I'm 15 again :(
Barry from The Questions on bass
Interesting -but who’s the drummer cos that sure ain’t Steve White?! ......
westonsea the drummer from The Questions
@kellycoleclan hi owen ,i wonder are you related to michelle kelly ,bapper,of ross rd now,i used to go out with her mate denise s..if not,,,it was fun,,best of luck m8
Muito bom
Am I the only one that thinks she's a better Singer on this than D C Lee
Yep
Weller wanted to be Mr Diversity
I wish I could think like a child again cynicism and defeatism rue the day and it sux ...
Strange seeing Weller without a guitar.
The man is cool as feck
I think the Jam were one of the great british bands, prefer later stuff to earlier punk sounding stuff. As for the Style Council after speak like a child i'd leave it well alone till his solo career.
This is pretty much Brinsley Schwartz's 'Surrender To The Rhythm' from ten years earlier.
100%
Both have prominent Hammond parts.....Thats it, no similarity in any other way
@@taekwanlewthe rhythm and chord progressions are almost identical.
Weller was born in surrey England, a long way from Belsen methinks!
Go Talbot , goooo !!!!
Weller with out the JAM
