  • In a prior video I restored power to a PS2 Slim only to discover that it had green artifacts on the screen. Watch me attempt to repair that issue and the chaos that ensues.

I've had a few people commenting to see if I can fix device. Well, if you're interested in having me try to fix your device, feel free to shoot me an email at fixmorewasteless@gmail.com. This isn't a paid service, just something I want to do to help those who need it. You'd be responsible for return shipping and any major parts like screens, so it's not a completely free service, but I'm not charging for the repair. Email me about your device and what the issue is and I'll let you know if I think I can help.

Capacitors in the AV port area are most likely to be in the analog video circuit, so they affect the entire screen. Artifacts are more likely generated in the digital part of the board.
Fortunately capacitors can often be measured in situ. Lots of multimeters can measure capacity, like my Aneng AN8009 for example.
I'm not sure but it seems that the new capacitor is larger than the original. In the SMD world having the right component size is really important. According the soldering process, the solder pads have different sizes : refusion process doesn't need pads as large as handsoldering.
Some tricks that can help you : flux on the braid, low melt solder, heating the board to reduce the energy the iron must transfer to the board.
For resistors, you can solder the two sides at the same time if the solder tip is large enough. Of course, good alloy and good flux help a lot to avoid making bridges.
If you use hot air, beware that electrolytic capacitors can pop.
For the damaged pad itself, you can use copper tape cut at the exact size of the pad. For the trace, you need some enameled wire. Once soldering done, apply a little amount of UV mask.

Thanks for the advice. I really appreciate it. It’s hard trying to learn all this new information and actually remember it while I’m working haha. Had a number of times I did something and said ah should have done that instead.

Such patience. I would've lost my cool at a couple of points in the video. Carry on!

Haha thanks. To be honest it wasn’t all in one sit down so I think that did help prevent me slinging it across the room.

For next SMD repairs I recommend you to get a cheap hot air gun and kapton tape to protect the area you don't want to melt; that'll help a lot to not rip traces since the components will even move by themselves, so you can use some pliers to pick them :D

Yes I recently got a cheap one. It seems to do well with smaller components but struggles on bigger chips. That or I need more practice using it on bigger chips. Possible that it’s both.

Low melt solder is a massive help in getting these caps off.

My PS2 Slim 9000 has developed a display problem where it lost its full colours, it would just display bright white until I've restart my console or unplug and plug it back in the AV cable (I'm using the original AV cable) until I got my full display colours back. Before it happened, I've noticed the display has gone darker similar to what PS1 display would look like when the capacitor has started to worn out.
I've been searching a video where someone does this exact fix for the slim versions, you might the one who found the answer. Looking forward to continuation of this fix (if there's any)

    1. Use a heatgun
    2. Dont use a donor smd cap from a old PS2.
    3 practice on junk boards.
Dont give up! You will do great with more training.

Easy way is to twist them off and replace them with through hole capacitors, put them on their side and solder the legs to the pads.

Ah that’s a great idea. Will definitely have to go that route next time. Thanks!

I wouldn't twist them off if I were you. Sometimes you just tear off the solder pads from the board doing that.
If you want to desolder these, either use hot air or add some low melt solder to the cap. You'll be able to quickly heat one pad then the other and just pull the cap off.

Similar to replacing the capacitors on PSOne (the "slim" version) eh? Interesting.

Hey Fix More , i have horrible solder skill very awful , , the power switch recently snapped off inside my PS2-SLIM it was held into place with 4 micro hair solders , , ,so no chance in hell of me repairing it 😢😢 , so now it's a doorstop , , im thinking of stuffing it with high-yield fireworks and exploding it as a UA-cam short , , haven't decided yet ,🤔🤔
