Lazy carries a derogatory connotation. It's best to look at things in terms of energy. Brain tries to conserve energy constantly. Conserving energy is generally a good thing. So how do we generate more energy?
Good stuff Captain...you know I’m a Seth fan and it took me 2 years of rejection before he said ‘yes’ to meeting me on my show for the first time 10 yrs ago....(story for another day). But some of the best advice he gave me in the beginning was this: “It turns out Yoda was wrong when he said, ‘Do or do not, there is no try...’ There IS a try...there has to be...if you’re not trying, you’re hiding.” This is the essence of The Dip to me. Keep going my friend, this can only lead to better things! 👊
Equanimity was the core of the 10-day Vipassana course - I am so proud that I did it last year. This year, I did the nofap 5weeks streak. And then I found your content, Nikhil!! Thank you so much.
Envious*. Jealousy is when you have something that you are trying to keep others from (e.g., "the dragon guarded it's treasure jealously"). Envy is when someone else has something that you want (e.g., "the woman envied her granddaughter's youth and innocence")

This reminded me of my first dive into voice acting, when I first got equipment and I could just audition every second of every hour of every day, then a year later not having as much energy as prior because the rush was gone.
I love how you connected the ideas of two seemingly unrelated books, The Dip and the Bhagavad Gita, together. I stopped reading The Dip the moment I picked it up because I thought it was only about quitting, but now that I know it’s about surviving the plateau in any craftman’s journey, I think I should pick it up again.
Strange how I got this video right as I'm pushing past that "dip". Even though I didn't know what to call it, I knew what it was. If that makes sense. I had a similar thing to your situation with the play, except mine had to do with making comics about some online friends. Before that I was struggling with my art and also was pretty lonely. Perfectionism and discouragement from family I thought I could trust also really got the best of me. I was looking for a discord server to get some online friends. I found one and entered a voice chat with people in it. Ended up talking to one of the members all night, sharing life stories and all that. Then they made a joke about another member/friend who posted a selfie, saying he looked like an egg. Then I drew them as an egg and @'d them. Then he popped into VC and met me, and we became friends. After that I became known as the server artist and was making characters and comics based on the jokes my friends would do. And now I'm at a point where I have the confidence and the knowledge (Art style, constructing comic pages, etc) to do the things I want to. But I can't rely on those online friends forever, nor do I want to. So my plan is to start with the small things, the small ideas; and work my way up from there. Thank you for making these videos, Captain Sinbad. They have helped so much.
Nikhil, great video! I need to be reminded to stop ruminating on the feedback (good or bad) and stay focused on the path. I have been working on my current venture for three years. I think there is so much truth in what you are saying about these stages we all go through. Obviously, anyone who has put a lot of effort into something gained skills and knowledge about their area of concentration and has the potential to do great things. Sometimes we have to reframe our mindsets to get out of the slump of mediocracy to gain success. Small, subtle changes can change the direction and make all the difference. Thanks
Keep improving your craft. If people think it's shit, then take it as a sign to do better. Never quit your passion, just find ways to support it. If it takes you 10 years to master it, then do it because you love it.
This video might be the best thing I've seen in years! I never realized that "the dip" was normal, I thought I was on the wrong path because nothing seemed to be working like it used to. At one point I was a "great singer" and many people told me I should be a professional. As I started down that path, my joy, talent, energy, and even the positive feedback from others seemed to disappear entirely. I gave up on singing for a while because it seemed to be a fruitless endeavor that only gave me joy when I was new to it. Yet over time, my passion has returned. It seems like I just need to keep at it and not attach to feedback from others or be deterred by the setbacks and slumps along the way. This is EXACTLY what I needed to hear today. A lot of your videos have been resonating with me lately. Thanks Cap'n!
'yeh gore log na mein bata deta hoon' 😂😂😂😂 Really starting to enjoy the content on this channel. Looking forward to more quality content in 2020. You, sir (bhaiyya/sensei??) have got yourself a sub
I cared a lot about people’s opinions earlier. You are so right about not caring about people’s feedbacks and staying on your path. I lost so much inspite of everything I did that when I hit rock-bottom I realised that what matters the most is my own ego. My parents taught me to be humble and well mannered but I feel like I am reborn as a new person who wants to be shameless, carefree and egotistical.
Keep pushing man. So many comedians/actors were homeless and booed on a daily basis before they got their big break. Also a lot of them didn't become famous until their late 30s
There's this quote which i got to know from derek muller(veritasium) and also one of your video for which the title i don't remember properly. but here it is.. "Grant me the serenity to accept the things i cannot change and the courage to changes the things i can and the wisdom to know the difference." Have a great year ahead man wishing you all the best.
I am obsessed with your channel! The advice you share is extremely useful and very relevant to my experiences and the experiences of our generation. I am so glad I discovered your channel while its still in its early stage because I am excited to see you grow as a filmmaker, videographer, actor, scriptwriter, etc. Happy to be embarking on this journey of self-development with you as a viewer!
Man, what a profound video. It was so enjoyable to watch. Man himself is unaware of his potential and of the potential around him. Escaping mediocrity is mostly about acknowledging that despite the variables in a situation, 'striving towards improvement'-is a given, like you said. Once you establish this, everything else is irrelevant. In this state of mind, you've isolated yourself from the rat race. Your content has always been great and your post-production these days is so good.
This is such an important concept. Not everything is in your hands, you have to give things time to grow sometimes, and grind on regardless of results and feedback. I was at "The Dip" and didn't know it, but there's definetely prizes on the other side of it!
The more I think about it, the more I realize that a lot of the content that resonates with me on and off UA-cam has elements of Stoicism and Minimalism. Not just in the content, but the style as well. Each of the creators: from Matt D'Avella, Nathaniel Drew, Eric Wen, and the Captain, Sorelle Amore, Peter McKinnon, all have these aspects. It's hard to be lukewarm about these creators. Which is why I truly respect their art. You're either with them, or you're not. And if you give them a chance, not only will you find out more about yourself ( or the kind of life you want), or more about the world you live in. Bonus, you'd even get to rethink books you've already read and re-apply lessons you may have missed on the first pass. Thanks, man, for the light you shine. To you, I say...
Great insight into your own journey and one we can all relate to, as well i love your comment on the Gita, the most important book in my life. Great video all round (I also love Mumbai, great city!)
@@CaptainSinbad No need to thank me, you create incredible content that you've earned everything until now. I was wondering is there a way to contact you? I've been wanting to ask something, but been hesitant if I'm honest

Captain thank you for your content and videos! You are one of the reasons I started my own UA-cam channel to help others and I feel the "DIP" already . Perfect timing :)
Sometimes I find that this can be taken to the extreme. I've met some hardworking people who will stick to what they do no matter what. Sometimes they do great, but sometimes they're still stuck after a long while, much longer than it usually takes. Of course, they're the minority, but alongside this advice, you should also remember to know that if something ain't working no matter how much you try, it's okay to take a diff approach or try something else. Good luck to you all, dearly beloved
You ain't alone in this boat. As an artist, I too feel a strange dissatisfaction with my progress. That sudden feeling of shortcoming and (I don't know if you take this step) constantly comparing your results with that of other people who are seemingly at the top. I'm not out of that phase yet, but I strive to do so. I'm rooting for you, Nikhil.

Thank you so much for this video. I'm going through surges, dips and recovering from a fall in different aspects of my life. I realise I shouldn't always look inwards when things go wrong. I just need to keep working through the dip. And what you said about impartiality to praise and criticism both, it's something I've encountered in mindfulness meditation. About not dwelling on thoughts, whether positive or negative. Just letting them go and being present.
