@Fulqrum It slightly depends on the sort of turn you are doing but the pole is the very first part of the new tern so it will be combined with the lightening and flattening of the skis, tried to avoid a huge springing upward movement more of the gentle lift, thanks and good luck.

@breathead Glad it was useful for you. By the way, if you have an iPhone Darren does go into the pole plant in detail in our Ski School Advanced app - check it out on the app store. (Please excuse the plug!). More tips on the way so keep an eye out.

@breathead Hi there, pole planting is extremely important. There are 3 areas that it will help you the most, skiing steep terrain, bumps and powder. Try and get into the habit of using it in every single turn. Having said that, it's much better to have a good turn without a pole plant, than a bad turn with one!

@klompedompe Hi Klompedompe - I think you might be getting it a little mixed up. Darren first demonstrates what not to do (when his body is swinging all over the place and one hand gets left behind), and then how do do it properly... the hands should both be in front ready for the next pole plant.
The object of this lesson is not to teach you how to do a turn on skis, but how to avoid this common problem.
Thanks for your feedback and do ask if you have any more questions!

@EvilBunnyPwnage Thanks! This video was filmed in Tignes, France, but I ski out of Serre Chevalier, another French Ski resort.

@jimidee33 Thanks jimidee33. We do try to stress that these videos aren't a replacement for a real-live ski instructor, they should be viewed as a useful supplement to on-slope instruction.

@adzy166 It may help with timing and moving forward towards the next turn maybe just use it as a warmup exercise so you can get used to the feeling of moving forward towards your next turn but it's not something you do all the time good luck with it.

It's really only a pole "touch" when not in bumps or steeps, a light touch then keep that hand forward and bring it with you - don't ski by it otherwise it'll end up behind you. Also he brings his arm across his body just before touching - that's only for long radius turns. Medium radius your arm reach further down the hill, about say 10:30 or 2:30 on a clock face (if 12 is ahead of you). Then short radius turns the pole touch arm should reach even further down the hill. And short on steeps, even further down.

Thanks Jeffrey Gu. We put a lot of effort into our Ski School Apps and its great when we get feedback like this. Makes it all worthwhile. We are in the final testing stages of the Expert Level which should be in the iTunes store in the next couple of weeks. Check out our FB page for announcements. Cheers

Love this series! Question about the pole plant; when I am planting the pole, should I also be springing my body upwards as I transition into the new turn??

Hi Darren. Re the pole plant, I sometimes see people in our ski team bringing together their poles during edge transition - a la Didier Cuche. I tried doing this and found it really helped my tempo and timing- mainly because it forced me to pushmy arms forward and balance improved. When I spoke to coach about it he said - don't do it, it is bad technique. OK... now i'm confused. Any thoughts on this please. This is mainly for GS style carved turns.

@klompedompe He is not. He is essentially showing you a quite upper body. If the inside hand drops back it will rotate the body into the hill and cause a loss of edging. Pay attention in watching these videos as it is easy to misintepret.

Disagree. If you watched Mikaela's freeskiing videos you would see that she is basically doing the same instructed here. That she sometimes or more often does the double pole plant is just because this avoids an upper body rotation and keeps your skis square.

  • @klompedompe

looks like he is using his upper body to initiate the turn instead of his knees/feet/whatever...thought that was a big no no
