- What Mic Should I Buy?

I always recommend the AKG414 because it's a great mic and it's the only one in that price range that I know really well. I can't recommend mics that I've never used.
So should you get a dynamic microphone or condenser microphone? What is the best microphone for recording vocals - dynamic or condenser? In essence, the only difference between a dynamic microphone and a condenser microphone is that they have different transducers. They convert physical energy to electrical energy differently.
That means, in theory, they're going to sound a little different. In general, the electronics of the condenser microphone make it better for recording instruments with the full frequency spectrum and those that require quick transient response - vocals, acoustic guitars, piano, drum over heads, strings, etc. Dynamic microphones are great for loud instruments, such as, snares, horns, very loud vocalists, rappers, etc.
This was by far the most helpful thing I have looked up on the subject. Thanks so much for that! Guess I'm getting a dynamic mic for my yells and screams.
Alright. Thanks again! Very helpful :)
When you said breath in I held my breath until I died because I have Internet Explorer and the rest of the video didn't load in. Rip if u cri
+SusannePlays xD
yeah microsoft is trying to destroy your win 7 and windows 8
Excellent joke. I love your entertainment. Haile Okbe, Toronto, Canada
This video is so informative and gives me everything I need to know! Not like all the other videos people make that just half-ass explain something and only what they know of it. Like if you left out one detail like the fact that the condenser is more sensitive to high pitched, quick, and quiet sounds, or the way the sound is transferred (like the condenser being easy to make the plates move, and amplifying the signal, and the dynamic having the coil that needs more pressure to move, but makes the signal strength based on the sound it senses). I now not only know that I need a dynamic mic, but why I need it, how it works, and how to work with it. Thank you so much!
Sweet! Just what I was looking for. Thanks for the upload and the thorough explanation! Also very well organized video.
I've started doing sound at church and am frantically trying to increase my knowledge base. You have just explained simply what is quite complex. You are easy to follow.
Dude awesome video. The candid personality made it even better. subscribed
This is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks man. The diagrams are super helpful.
So basically, dynamic microphones work through electromagnetic induction on the solenoid (Faraday's Law) and condenser microphones are powered from the energy of the electric field stored in the capacitor
That's actually a pretty interesting video. Plus, you're a great teacher and you can explain things in a way that everyone can understand. Thanks, subbed.
Thanks for that, very informative, educational with a good dry straight to the point humor. You earned my like and subscription
Very nicely done, Michael! I haven't done much with audio engineering since my college days, about thirty years ago. The microphones haven't changed much. everything else has!
I feel most people who want to make a channel should watch this video. It helped me understand what is actually happening with my equipment.
+Classy Rage Turtles Network Wholeheartedly agree. Thanks for the awesome vid
Great speech man :) very straight forward, no less-talk, a bit of jokes :) Thanks!
This is great man, subscribed and looking forward to more!
Thanks for the explanation - I finally get it.
For such a great explanation, I have! to hit "like" Thanks so much, I could follow your explanations really well and that for not being a native speaker. All thumbs up!
Oh and of course I susbribed, too!
Hey, great explanation! Just what I was looking for
I loved your video. Your presentation of the material and the way you reiterated talking points as you went while still being concise was so easy to comprehend and learn. I feel so satisfied after watching your video. It told me everything I wanted to know. Thank you and well done sir!
Thank you, great explanation!
I googled the difference. The text confused me. Found this video, and i feel i understand way better! Cheers! Have a sub!
And i appreciate you took the time to say this!
Great video! I was looking for a good mic for all kinds of soundeffects. Guess I'm gonna go with a condenser to get a more detailed sound.
the condenser picks up tiny sounds in the background UNTIL the close performance begins. But if there is a space, the background will flare up again because the disturbance is augmented by a "capacitor" (releases large signal from small input). The ordinary mike gives a faithful registry of every sound so if the first note is loud it won't be distorted ...
Good video, man. Thanks for posting. I think I need a condenser.
Really cool video Michael, thanks for sharing, but I still have a couple of questions...
According to your experience, what would be the best microphone to record my voice on a computer, considering the fact that there might be background sounds such as computer fans, or even TV speakers (in the worst case).
I really want a microphone that focuses on my voice.
And second question, I don't have a huge budget, so I'm looking for a microphone for maximum 250$ (pop filter and pod included), I've looked at USB microphones but I don't know if they worth it or not... Any advices on this ?
Thanks a lot !
Great explanation!
I really like how you described the science behind the microphones clearly! But I do have one question: How much did each of those microphones cost, and what were their product names?
+Michael Pitluk Thanks Michael, that really does help me for some of my up-coming projects! (By the way, I checked the equipment you described, and you have some pretty great quality microphones! Nice desk-studio too.)Keep making videos, thanks again.
wonderfully explained
Thank you, this helped a ton!
7:14 "Good for you for watching" haha :D I love it
Thank you for the explanation! graphics were helpful too!!!
Great Tks for your prompt reply.....
the last part of vide where you say now you better help me made me to like this video :D
it was kind of funny and nice ...
and thanks bro....
Thanks, that really helped!
Every math class ever taken... Blah... for an hour.. Then the prof, "Forget all of that, now just do this..."
Fantastic explanation.Which head worn wireless mike would you recommended for singing drummer. Thanks
For a beginner what would you suggest using for youtube commentaries and voice overs, condenser or dynamic?
I love it when people explain the science of things. This was a nice little review of college physics for me, hehee.
And now all of us who didn't know how microphones work are a little smarter. Isn't it wonderful?
He talks about the physics of it only. I'd like to know more of the practical side.
Howard Roark at then end of the video I touch on how the information is purely a theoretical interest. 2 dynamic mics could sound more different than a condenser and dynamic. If you want to be practical, learn how the mics you have sound in different situations.
thank u Michael..... u make this complex shit so easy to understand.... (Y)
This video educated me. In theory.
Great explanation man! but I don´t agree with the guy saying you look like Ryan Gosling, you look like Messi!
So sound waves hit the diaphragm etc --
louder noises = more pressure on the coil (more movement)
But lower frequencies also = more pressure on the coil (from repeatedly hitting it or hitting it less frequently)? (more movement?)
So how can the mic tell the difference between a louder sound and a lower pitch, or a softer sound and a high pitch?
Does it just read the force of the waves as the amplitude, and read the frequency (of this force acting on the diaphragm) as the pitch?
I'm tired and haven't thought this through so sorry if I'm missing something obvious and am being stupid!
Thank you very much
my Logitech jack desktop microphone broke on me and been searching for something better to use. for my laptop I been thinking of buying a xlr to jack with usb powered dynamic microphone over USB condenser microphone. I will be using the microphone for voicing. rather it's radio deejaying or voice overlay in video editing.
Fantastic work on this vid. You got skills. Let me know when you upload new videos, maybe we can help in some way.
SO ARE YOU SAYING I NEED A POWER SUPPLY FOR MY CONDENSER MIC?
if you wanted to record something loud, in high quality while still containing a "lo-fi" vibe, would a condenser be the way to go? asking because it seems like a condenser would "blow out" in a way, and i'm not necessarily interested in having clean punk recordings (and i try to keep as many facets of my recordings pre-mixing phase)
Thanks man that helped allot
I purchased a Condenser microphone a while ago and I was wondering, why condenser ? What is a condenser microphone ? And what's the difference anyways. I feel like the condenser is more for singing and the other is for radio show stuff and talking.
+Oddy Chanz pls tell me sir which is best for vocal singing recoding mic,,,,dymanic is best ya condenser pls reply ?
deepak kumar
This is my own personal belief so take this with a grain of salt.
In my own personal opinion the condenser is the superior option for singing
Reason being is because the condenser responds faster and it picks up higher frequencies and it is greater for higher pitches.
It's much more sensitive than the Dynamic Microphone but it comes at a cost. The Condenser is less physically durable so you want it under the greatest conditions and don't expect it to last longer than a dynamic microphone.it probably wont. Also if you want to get a condenser microphone it's going to cost you significantly much more money, because a condenser microphone needs allot of power to work. You would have to buy a phantom power supply and a sound card if your going to get a condenser microphone. It took me a while but I successfully set mines up and it works. It's a headache to figure out but I got it working.
One of the possible issues you may encounter is with your sound card before you buy it make sure it's compatible with your version of windows that's assuming your using a computer with this equipment as I am. If your not using a computer than this part of the details is probably useless information.
My sound card works with all versions of windows accept windows 10 it do not have drivers for windows 10 but it works well in windows 7. I'm using it with FL.studio 12.
Question- I have a podcast and I have on average between 2-4 people who are all in the same room when we broadcast. I have had MXL 770 condenser mics at first but realized afterwards that they were picking up too much from ppl in the room. We've since switched to 4 pretty cheap dynamic mics that have proven to be a little easier to manage. Is there anyway to lessen the sensitivity on the condenser mics or is using dynamic just a better way to go in the future? Is using both dynamic and condenser mics simultaneously during the same session not encouraged?
Thanks,,,, realy helpful GBU
dude best tutorial
So you're saying dynamic mic is better for vocals?
Dude do you think am sm57 or sm58 is good enough for recording heavy metal screams or powerful vocals? I'm not really planning on using a condenser because I don't have a sound isolated room
Thank you for the video, it was really interesting.
I am recording podcasts and wanted to know which microphone I should use?
Thank you so much!
+Maxime Beaulieu The mic you get depends on your budget. I'd suggest a Shure SM58 for $150 or the Shure SM7B for $250-350. Make sure you clean up (EQ/compress) the audio you record in your recording software: roll off some low end (below 80 Hz) and be sure to de-ess. If you're not sure what that is, there's a million YT videos, so check them out.
Thanks man learnt a lot...which mic do you think is best for recording rap vocals at home ?
Thanks bro...i decided to go with condenser mics and I am really stuck in choosing between the Rode NT1A and the NT1. people are saying that the NT1 has a flat frequency response. but i dont have any idea what does that mean . Does that helpful for us in anyway ? Help me man its confusing
Got it thanks bro for spending your valuable time sharing knowledge and helping beginners like me really appreciate it. btw i am subbed
U mean analog sound(peoples voices and real world sounds) converting into digital( what goes into the certain device)
And how both Mics use different ways to make the process happen.
That what I understand
+TrikShotMC No the mic outputs analog. If you want digital use an ADC
hi sir! just want to ask can you scream into a condenser mic without it distorting? because i got a m audio recording mic and i dont know if its a condenser or dynamic mic but when i sing high notes the sound of its is distorted even though my recording level is really low
If i was to do a freestyle /rap which microphone will i need?
This video is amazing. Reminded me of ryan gosling.
You helped me, I helped you. :v Thanks for the video, man!!
:v
Dope vid. Hit that like for ya
Physical energy to electrical energy. Please note that the flow of electrons through a conductor is NOT an example of "physical energy" lol 😂
I have both an I don't know which to use. I do voice acting as well as just plain talking, plus recording sound effects. which is best for recording sound effects other than vocals?
Thanks for your reply. While I didnt understand much of the terminology there, I think I get the idea. The thing is I have two mics already, that are in the higher price range. the dynamic one is a "profisound sennheiser" MD427 and the condenser is a "RODE NT3". Do you have any advice for any of these? thanks
a 10 minute video and I still know what the fucking difference is. gj
pretty obvious to me mate
i love physics. you earn 1 sub.
A dynamic microphone is the type of mic I need to record screaming/harsh vocals, right? All this mic business is so confusing for a starter like me, haha. Also, what type of microphone would produce good results and what else would I need to record into my laptop?
Thank you so much, Michael! I will take all of this into account and plan on a purchase! It's much appreciated.
which is better for punk pop
+Michael Pitluk lets say I wanted to record 5seconds of summer type music
I wanted to know what the best (and if possible) the cheapest miscrophone for voice acting wuold be? I am looking to do this through my laptop so would a dynamic one be the best?
+00Indeedibly00 i have a sm58 and its amazing
+00Indeedibly00 you will also need an audio interface as most mics use XLR cable, you can get a real cheap behringer mixer/USB inteface which are popular with youtubers
sufficiently educated, indeed! xD
thanks!
He explains it all then says it's not important info hahaha. Good on you for watching
Bruh this guy said that the information we just learned from him is practically useless, but it's very interesting xD I agree man, I love this educational video.
***** But everyone who watched this whole video knows this video was very interesting, so great job man!!!
FYI: When you said that the information was useless out of nowhere, I cracked up so hard xD
the thing is, that even though this information might sound useless for our "everyday pool knowless" , its acctually very usefull when you want to learn more, and people who acctually knows more, try to give the long hard answers just to stablish they as experts, and not to let you learn(lots of those guys). Your video was magnificently simple and complete in order to help me know basics useless microphone slang. TYVM!
This is like Ryan Gosling describing how microphones work. I approve. Well spoken, explained clearly, and I appreciate the tone of your voice.
This is probably the creepiest comment I've ever made, but I mean it all as a compliment!
My face during his explanations: o___o
Didn't know Ryan Gosling is a sound engineer
+LPArabia "I give you a five minute window..."
***** reference to the movie Drive where Gosling was in
Michael, what a great video and brilliant explanation. Thank you so much
Cool video man. You have a talent for explaining this stuff. Just a suggestion but you should do a video on microphone level vs line level and why we need a pre-amp to amplify microphone level to line level. Also as a suggestion the difference between consumer line level and professional line level (+4dbu vs -10dbv), why it's important to record at levels optimized for your interfaces A/D converter and what the reference level is for consumer / pro based gear.
too much technical details and too little practical explantion =(
behringer c1u vs Samson c10u pro?
Really informative!! Thanks!!
U earn my sub!
Short and sweet.. liked it...
Quick question: For my UA-cam videos, I use a dynamic mic (my old stage mic), hooked up to a Boss GS-10 guitar effects processor, which has a USB interface to my computer. Problem is, Roland/Boss never made a driver that will work with Windows 10, so I've been stuck using Windows 7 (not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing LOL). My question is, if I wanted to go to Windows 10, what would be the best and cheapest way to interface my current mic (or any dynamic mic... have quite a few of them, from my old band days) with my computer?
Awesome explanation! Thanks for your sharing :-)
Loved your clear and easy to follow explanation. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Subscribed your channel.
Best explanation I found on the topic! At least on my level... Great job! Love the humor in your lecture :) Liked and subscribed!
I use the Audio Technica AT2020 usb condenser, and it really brings the clarity in my voice out without so much added eq in mixing. I started out with a Rockband 2 usb Mic and must say...Condenser is the way to go for vocals
+Joshua Hayes pls tell me sir which is best for vocal singing recoding mic,,,,dymanic is best ya condenser pls reply ?
+deepak kumar I'm far from professional bro but I've gotten great quality on both. it depends on the artist and the Mic
Anytime your talking about diaphragms and vibrators, you are sure to get peeps attention!! ;)
So anyhows, the dynamic mike picks up stuff close and the condenser picks up everything.
But the "Extremely General" comment threw me. GOOD JOB BRO!
amazing video!!! very helpful!!! thanks!!!
Great basic explanation. One critique. You breathe with your lungs, so that's where your diaphragm is. It's not in your stomach. Haha!! Good job, though. Capacitive circuits pass high frequencies, and block low ones. Inductive circuits pass low frequencies, and block high ones. Voltage (E) leads current (I), by 90 degrees, in inductive (L) circuits. Current leads voltage, by 90 degrees, in capacitive (C) circuits. Therefore, dynamic mics (inductive) have quicker response. Transformers on input stages respond to changing voltage. This principle can be remembered as Eli the Iceman.
When I attached my mic to Phantom Power, and suddenly it has fuzzy noise in my recordings...did my mic get damaged from the Juiced Link's Phantom Power?
Thanks for the theory, but I would have gained more from a practical demonstration of the dynamic vs condenser microphones.
ThomasGrillo you really wouldn't have. There's no way to compare a dynamic to a condenser in general. Sometimes two dynamics can sounds more different than a dynamic and condenser.
Michael,
Thank you for this Very Informative and helpful information. I've been singing for 50 years and didn't until now clearly understand the differences. I was about to go out Today and buy a different mic But this video convinced me I don't need to.
I've been using a Shure SM58 Beta for the past six years. I't been a real work horse for me. I sing Classic Rock Folk and Pop. My voice tends to be a bit harsh on the high end and I was wondering if switching mics would help. Your post reaffirms that I'm already using the correct mic for my situation. Thanks for saving me some $$
Dana Lewis
Hey Michael!
You seem to know more about the subject than I do, but I would suggest using a dynamic/broadcast quality microphone in the following very-common situation:
You're recording vocals/podcasting/screencasting in a semi-treated, or untreated home studio (i.e. bedroom).
Dynamic mics are less sensitive & provide better at off-axis "rejection" than condensers. So unless you want your recordings to be littered with ambient noise (birds chirping, cars driving by, the sound of the saliva in your mouth) that absolutely kill your recordings, then avoid condensers.
Which one would be better for recodnig vocals on yt channel? I mean - generally - dynamics or condenser? And maybe you or someone else reading this could recommend a good one but not as expensive as rode nt (but with still good quality of a record)? I'm asking because I'm totally newbie at it ;) I'm interested in mics up to 100$. I've watched some revievs of a M-Audio Vocal Studio but some people says it's better for voice over recordings than vocal, I also read about Samson G-Track, Samson C01u and few Behringers, but I don't know which could be the best.
Anyway, the first question is - should it be a condenser or dynamic to make my voice sound good (I won't record it in a studio - to make it clear ;) - but at home, on yt and on the begging I don't want to be a super profesionalist, I just want to exctract all of the good sides of my voice).
Sorry for so long comment, I hope it won't be tl;dr ;) Thanks in advance ;)
Michael, nice video, thanks!
Hey quick question. My Shure SM57 used to have a DV Forge MicPlug and it sounded really good, but that piece of equipment broke, I got a cable to replace it and now it's too quiet. I have no idea about mics, so now I don't know what to use to power my mic.
Can you help? Thanks!
As an engineer with 48 years experience, I can say, nothing is set in stone. Overall, I find that female vocals on condenser mics can be trickier than male. One of my favorite mics of all time is the EV RE-20, which to me has the sweetness of a condenser without that low-mid 'darkness' I hear in so many condensers. The RE-20 can be used on virtually anything. Many "Wrecking Crew" recordings were done using shure dynamics on acoustic rhythm guitars.
... IT ALL MAKES SE (opps cap lock) sense now. Thanks for making this video man. Jam on!
Awesome video. It's refreshing to find such an articulate instructional video on UA-cam. I typically find myself fast forwarding through 20 minutes of rambling just to find the information I'm seeking, but this was great. Keep it up.
educational it was ..
Minister, I really enjoyed your UA-cam. It was simple, precise and brief informational material. I also liked your physical and graphical presentation making my understanding quite easy. I like you minster. God bless you.
Haile Okbe, Toronto, Canada
Good explanaition. Thanks for the info ! By the way, we have the same chair or at least yours makes the same sounds as mine through a dynamic. ;-)
So, what are the consequences of not being handling higher SPL? What, would the condenser mic break? Or does it mean that the dynamic mic would have more detail in higher SPL situations? Extraordinary video btw, it's rare to see someone be able to explain something this clearly. Thanks for the video.
