Total studs ! Greatest generation is no doubt The greatest generation ever ! Im proud my Dad US Army Air Force member serve in the South Pacific and made it back in one piece. He was the only survivor of a PT boat sunk by a enemy submarine. He was picked up 2 weeks later in a raft . He never mentioned this to our family till his brother told me about it at my Dads funeral!
Riveting account. Joe McGraw's account of his attack on the 18 Vals, told to me in person, differed in some details from the account herein. His 4 plane flight, depicted in a painting Joe made, made a near simultaneous beam attack on the VAls, (I would have sworn they were Kates) with each fighter taking out a bomber before the escort could intervene. As the Zeros attacked, Joe turned into them and shot down the leader's wingman. Joe and the Zero leader then turned into each other for a head on pass. Joe said that was the tightest he ever turned the FM-2 and put some rounds into the Zero's engine. The last Joe saw, the Zero was diving away with its engine smoking. He said the Zero leader was a real pro but who had probably not seen a Wildcat since Guadalcanal. He likely did not expect the improved performance of the FM-2. In later years, Joe tried to find the identity of the Zero leader but the last I heard, he had no luck. Joe ended the war with 5 kills and a probable (the Zero leader was unconfirmed).
I have spent much of my life studying the Pacific war and am familiar with many aspects of it.
But the readings from this channel have so immensely personalized these battles and the hardships suffered by ordinary men. And they have So inspired an awe and appreciation for those ordinary men who did such extraordinary things.

I finally got to the sinking video. Calling them videos seems weird since there is actually no video. I don't want to seem ungrateful to the people producing these programs but they are hard to follow since there are a number of different series out there at one time. I do like "Gambler Bay" over Gambia Bay. I doubt that many people know that Gambia Bay is on Admiralty Island in Alaska. That is obscure even for Alaska.
