  • I needed help moving large logs down the hillside to be cut into stove-length firewood pieces. This little cart does the trick!

Now all I have to do is figure out how to make the cart. Thanks for making the video. It’s exactly the thing I needed to see!!

Came here searching for a few different ideas about how to shift a tree trunk I cut down today. That's a great solution!

My suggestion for a simple brake is simply tie a small stick vertically at the smaller end of the log, near to the holding hands. It can also be served as a resting column if you are feeling tired at some point. To brake the load, it is simply lower the small end of the log, letting it touching the ground. The depth of the vertical stick determines the braking force! The soil will slow down the travelling.

Hey bud. I took to amateur carpentry out of necessity seeing as how fortune has not blessed me with much wealth. And I have to say this cart idea of yours is way better than lugging heavy logs on the back of my neck and on my shoulders like I do now... Not sure when I will get the parts for it but I appreciate you sharing!

Nice work, Joey. I did something similar using an old hand truck.dolly my son gave me. I wish it had bigger wheels but I didn't holler about free. I was moving 10 foot sections of double-layered PVC culvert pipe from my staging area to where I finally wanted it dropped off. Enjoyed a full-watch. 👍

thanks Joey :) I live on a small island and have been looking for a way to get logs from the beach to my place, to sit and season for a couple years to use as firewood, or to use with a portable mill to build things. your idea will definitely help make both possible :)

If you slide the cart back to a balance point there will be no lifting required

Very even ground, though. Usually have to get the logs out of the woods, going over roots, stumps and ruts. Maybe pulling with tongs at front and the cart at the back end (?)

I'm moving an entire tree of hickory, 6" at the butt, 30' long. I'm using a heavy duty 4 wheel cart. I will lay it middle-wise in the cart; tie a long rope to the handle. I hope I will be do-able to steer the cart via the 30 ' rope, as I walk out in front. What do you think? Super idea you had to grab the small end of the log for guiding the cart.

Braking would be easy to accomplish. Just put a strap on the end you are carrying so that you hold the strap instead of the end of the log and then lower the log until it drags.

Wondering if you might tell me where you got the green plates/mounts for the wheels?

Great problem solving. I like the way you find way to accomplish all of this free and even reduce the labor you have to put in. If you had a mushing harness for the dog, you could get a ride down the hill. ;-) Weeee!

rather than the chain a ratchet strap would secure tighter and quicker

Great idea and good thinking. One question though if its an old home site there should be old trail for driving up to it. Are you able to actually drive up there im sure they got a hole in the fence somewhere.

Move to the middle, bigger wheels and you have a log arch, what is called in Dutch Mallejan

Add some rear steer wheels and ride on down!!

If those were real logs (bigger diameter), I guess the easiest thing to do is to buy an electric portable winch and pull them out (attach chain to one end and pull). Using a manual winch ('come along') would also work but it would take too long.

Logs come in all shapes and sizes. Sure if they were bigger a different solution would be better. Not sure how your comment is of any use or relevant to what's happening in the video

Would it not be even easier if you put the middle of the log on the cart so its acting like a fulcrum and you dont have to actually lift the log.

I saw a construction cart that holds thousands of pound. It has a metal lifting rack with a two foot elevator on it give or take a foot. It has 4 wheels and a special large square cart. You set the cart on the ground then you lower the lift on the wheel base and pull it out. You can then go get another cart or set it aside until you finish loading or unloading. When you are ready to move the stationery cart you run the wheel cart under the lip of it and lift it up. It was really cool. I imagine it was expensive too. Probably more for moving wood after it is cut. I saw on this youtube video at:
ua-cam.com/video/fD_0HqYOWKk/v-deo.html starting at 0:10 on the video. It is the first item shown.
