  • I enjoyed the selection of songs in this national final! The production on most of them was of a good standard and the variety of genres is something that you don't always find in German selections. My top five were all things that I liked listening to.
Having said that, there was one clear choice in this selection and Germany went in another direction. Again, Germany have got a good radio song, that's going to struggle to pick up points at Eurovision. It's a respectable, but unambitious choice.
Good luck, Germany. I hope you get out of the bottom three but am not expecting you to do so.

Absolutely agree with « Walk You Home Safe » ! A shame it wasn’t in the final lineup. My favourite was Bodine Monet but I also really liked Ryk (missed opportunity with him I feel like) and Leona. As for the winner well let’s say he wasn’t amongst my favs hahaha

It was a selection of good music to listen to, with one really strong Eurovision-level entry. If they had gotten the choice right, we would've all talked about what a great national final Germany had just put on.

Overall, for Germany, this surprisingly was a decent NF but I have to admit I think there are only 3 songs that really appeal to me here and that I thought had real potential in general : Tears like Rain, Undream You and Oh Boy, in that order by personal preference. And even then... The issue with Germany is that they do have relatively predictable NFs filled with mostly good but safe radio songs when it comes to the best choices regardless.
Some comments about these 3 songs and the winner :
Tears like Rain : Thought this had the best package overall in this NF. Not sure it would've actually have worked at Eurovision but thought it had potential to at least approach the top 15 because Bodine makes this completely her own and it's a good song that has some catchiness to it. The issue with this does come from the fact it's still relatively predictable and stays like a good radio song mostly. I just think there's genuine connection between the artist and song there and I was convinced by her performance and her voice does add something even more interesting to the song. Fully honestly, I don't think it's that competitive for Eurovision but I genuinely feel like there was something there, it felt like the most genuine entry to me.
Undream You : I think this is very beautiful. Even though it's true it is a very slow song, I just feel like this song at least takes me somewhere, it takes me on its journey and I am not getting bored by this. I completely agree with your comment actually because that's how I feel listening to this song ; I feel rewarded for listening to it and staying until the end, because it takes me somewhere. I can see the issue in the lack of immediate power of this song but I personally think juries could have supported this ? Hard to say though seeing it finished second to last with juries in the NF so... xD Maybe it wouldn't have. But there is definitely quality there, so, btw, I find this extremely weird juries didn't support this at all. I was always convinced televoters would let this down though, but it never deserved to come last.
Oh Boy : Might have been the best choice for Eurovision but I actually have some things I personally don't like about this one. It's a good song, well-produced, well-performed with really, really good vocals and Ryk does feel like he connects with his song. It's also quite powerful but I feel like the instrumental and song overall goes too over-the-top at times when it gets loud and trying to be dramatic, which actually loses impact on me. I definitely prefer the verses to the choruses in this one, personally. It also lacks a hook to really latch onto I feel like. Because of this, I don't see how televoters would have actually voted for this at the actual Eurovision, while juries may have supported this for its quality. There's also one last thing that makes me sad to say but... I think this may be one of few ballads I struggle to connect with and I think it's because of the song and not Ryk himself. This song somehow leaves me a bit cold :( Despite that, I acknowledge its qualities and think it might've been the best choice if I had to choose one of these songs for Eurovision.
Always On The Run : So, I'll start off by saying I don't think this was the right choice either. It's a good song and I actually like it... until the chorus hits. The verses are actually very good and the pre-chorus actually builds pretty well into it. But then the chorus hits and for me... It's dreadful, lyrically at least. But, I don't even feel like the instrumental direction chosen in the chorus works, although it's not as bad ^^' For me, it's such a disappointment of a chorus where he keeps repeating ''run-un-a-eh, run-un-a-eh''. Ugh. Talk about a nasty trying-to-be hook to remember it, it really irritates me XD. I don't really see where the votes could come from for this at Eurovision. I do also struggle to connect with this one as well. To finish on at least a good note, his vocals are very good and I think he performs the song pretty well. Overall, I think it was one of the better entries of this NF but this getting the win definitely feels like a stretch to me ^^'

It was a good selection! Lots of stuff that can be listened to going forward. Maybe nothing that would *really* trouble the higher positions at ESC, but yeah.
I wouldn't know where the Eurovision points would come from for Tears Like Rain. I don't think juries would like it much and I can't imagine it being anyone's favourite to the point of it getting televotes. It would run risk of being a fairly good German song that nobody votes for. I think they've done that before!
Undream You coming last overall was a bit surprising. I know that it is understated, but I would've expected enough support to ensure any televote wouldn't have gotten Scars ahead of it. Oh well. Again, when things like this happen, it makes you question juries. If they're not there to reward proper songwriting, then what?
I actually do agree with you on your assessment of Ryk's song, in that, his part in it is excellent and what I'm wanting, but the instrumental doesn't really work for me. I find it quite overbearing and even his voice seems to get lost amongst things at times. It's definitely not the composition that "You And I" was, but, he brings so much quality, that I would've still been happy with it.
With the winner, the chorus doesn't irritate me so much. It's probably the weakest part of the song but I think Isaak just about makes it work. It's the sort of lazy chorus that is probably going to result in it getting no jury points though.

So glad Galant delivered live. They'll probably stay as my winner from this NF. However, I still find stupid how Germany just let "Oh Boy" go, as it was clearly the song with the highest ceiling result-wise. Such an unwise decision.
I've grown to like Isaak's entry more but it genuinely feels more like a soft acceptance of last place than anything. It's very unexciting and forgettable (notice how I simply call it Isaak's entry, I just can't remember the song's title jeez). The best I can foresee for Germany, as of now, is a Victor Crone-type of result. 21st is better than last, at least.
Also, "Undream You" is one of my biggest growers of the NF season and it being last (below "Scars") is a sick joke. Not surprising, but wrong nonetheless. Reminds me a bit of Molly Sterling back in 2015. Lovely entry.

    • @kaleproject3495

Galant over-delivered live! They were great, and with a song that so easily could have gone wrong. Very happy with their performance.
Choosing Isaak when Ryk was there doesn't make sense if you think in terms of perspective results. There is almost no chance that Isaak is going to get televote points as it is just not the sort of song that stacks up well against 25 others in the minds of televoters. So then, it's down to the juries...and Ryk literally had a song that would appeal to juries. Isaak's will struggle to get into top ten's there and, again, that leads to the potential of no points.
Didn't understand the "Undream You" result. It was a tough lineup and it is not really a televote song, but still. I guess some televoters followed Floryan's journey on the show and supported him? There's no other reason I see.

@@vincentesc I don't know if it's being mad. It's just more that to get points at ESC, you have to be in the top ten for at least some juries...and I honestly, don't see that.
With televote, your song needs to be amongst people's favourites again....and that's going to be hard to.
I'm not mad he won. But I do think last place is a possibility for Germany just because of how Eurovision scoring works and the type of song they've selected.

Looking at your top, I have to agree that Germany made the second best choice last night. I still believe that they won't escape the bottom 5 for yet another year.
'Oh Boy' might have been loved by the Eurovision juries, but I think televoters would have ignored it with that staging. Judging by some UA-cam comments I have read since yesterday, Isaak's song is more immediate while Ryk's song is a grower. Since first impression matters, I understand Germany's choice, also considering it was consensual among international juries & the German public.

    • @kaleproject3495
      @kaleproject3495  6 місяців тому +2

I think when you're a country that's consistently 26th place in Eurovision, picking a song that would've been "loved by the juries" might be a step in the right direction. It's still worth half of the vote and, if it did well there, you'd get a good result.
I've heard some saying Ryk was a potential Eurovision winner and I'm definitely not there. But the top 15 was a very realistic prospect, which would've been a great achievement for Germany.

  • @joshukaunarak
    @joshukaunarak 6 місяців тому +1

It sucks to be a German ESC fan. We have yet another radio song that nobody is going to vote for. And why would they, when other countries have something to offer. At this point, I stop caring for our own entry. It's lost.
And personally I blame the voting system. The international juries ruin everything. This also was the case last year, but last year we had an accumulated points system instead of one where the points were given based on simple rankings. Ryk being just a few points behind Max in the juries didn't mean anything since the ranking made him end up with just half of Max's points. The televoting, which was still on during that time, seems to then have collectively tried to prevent Max from winning as the last possible move.
    Anyway, here's my top 9:
    9. Max Mutzke:
He almost made it, which I find concerning. It's such an utterly uninteresting song. The performance lacked humility and connection. Confidence is good, but Max looked like he was promoting his new song in a talk show, not like he was competing for something that meant anything to him.
    8. Leona:
Intimate, but forgettable. The performance felt like 3 wasted minutes. Instead of capturing the audience, it flew past. There is beauty in the song, too bad it just won't stay in the mind.
    7. Isaak:
This doesn't work in Eurovision, but someone still didn't get the memo. His voice is definitely great, and the pre-chorus shows promise, but the song lacks a proper intro and the chorus/drop is terrible.
    6. Galant:
It's just different for the sake of being different, and I can't help but roll my eyes at that. However, I really liked the performance, it looked great and set the right atmosphere!
    5. Floryan:
Beautiful song with a bad structure. You wait for a chorus before realising that what you have been hearing already was the chorus. The song's buildup is just too weak. It moves towards a point but already ends when it's halfway there. However, Floryan had the humility that Max would have needed.
    4. Marie Reim:
I would never listen to Schlager in my free time, but I have so much respect for this entry participating in a German NF. The entire performance went full-on Schlager and I was entertained wonderfully! Had we chosen this, I would have completely been behind it.
    3. NinetyNine:
Catchy and likeable song with really nice emphasis in the chorus and interesting cut-off measures! Would never have been the right choice, but I like it!
    2. Ryk:
It would have been too good to be true. This song has depth, emotion and potential to go really big. It could and should have been our choice. It truly felt special.
    1. Bodine Monet:
Not a choice for Eurovision, but my personal favourite song from the NF. It's super catchy and so very engaging. Bodine's voice is special, and she knows how to modify her voice to suit the different parts of the song. Loved it!

    • @kaleproject3495
      @kaleproject3495  6 місяців тому +1

It wasn't a great voting system, and the jury's actual choices were just odd. However, Isaak did also win the televote, so the problem was a bit bigger than just the voting system. The German public, again, also wanted to go with safe, radio-friendly music over something more competitive.
I do agree with your comments about Max's song actually. It's a really good description of it.
It's a tough time to be a German Eurovision fan for sure. It's really hard to overcome indifference from your general public. Denmark is having a similar issue atm....and basically, the only real solution is to somehow, fluke a good result and then use it to build momentum going forward. You had a chance in 2018, but then....sent S!sters....so yeah....

    Hi ^^
    My Top 11 overall:
    11. Naiv- 1.5/10
I HATE this type of German Schlager. Its literally the worst of any music types we can produce. And this is not even good Schlager. Just obnoxious and cheesy. Its pretty obvious she only was allowed compete because of her famous parents.
One thing: If we would have picked this I seriously think it might have become my least Favourite German entry of alltime.
    10. Yellow Brick Road- 2.5/10
    9. Scars- 2.5/10
Just 2 completely forgettable and uncompetitive songs
    8. Farben neuer Tage- 4/10
    7. Undream You- 4.5/10
    6. Tears Like Rain- 6/10
Unfortunately I didn´t like the live versio that much. Still a good song though
    5. Forever Strong- 6.5/10
    4. Katze- 7.5/10
To be Fair this is still ridicoulous, but It grew on me. After reading the complete lyrics I started to like it, and the whey they performed it was Awesome.
    3. Love on a Budget- 8.5/10
    2. Always on the Run- 9/10
Im torn here. At once Im happy we picked him because I love Isaaks voice and this song is so enjoyable. But otherwhise It also would have been better if we picked something I do not enjoy because that would be easier with people hating on it ._.
    1. Oh Boy- 9.5/10
The best one for sure. But with Germanys luck in Eurovision probably even him would have been bullied to death by the Juries, so it doesnt really matter.

I haven't come across too many people hating on Isaak's song yet, but I'm sure it's coming. I mean, I like it, but it's just hard competing in a continent-wise competition with an entry like this and expecting a good result. I'd like to think Ryk would've done well with juries, but I'm realistic to know that juries in Eurovision don't work as they should, so who knows?
