I've never level boosted, partially because I'm a bit clumsy with the combat system, and want to thoroughly practice my buttons when trying a new profession - and partially because I think it's just chill and/or satisfying to clear out chunks of the map.
The only time I've used any of my lv80 boosts was when I had leveled elementalist to 80, and saw how much celestial gear was on the TP

There's a reason why you don't get much story from hearth quests in the base game, because originally those didn't exist, which is why a lot of map lore and story is in the dynamic events. Iirc, the heart quests were a very late addition after playtesters said they didn't feel like they had enough guidance without quests.
On that note: Main story quests used to be unlocked every few levels, but when they changed the new player experience, for some unexplainable reasons, they decided to relegate an entire arc of the main story to only happen every 10 levels. At some point they even cut an entire arc from the late game main story, and I still don't understand why, but at least they added it back in after a while.

I like that the main story is locked at intervals, gives me time to explore the world and to ponder on the events that happened in the open world and the main story and seeing if it connects. But it's something different so people who are not used to the MMO genre or open world games might find it confusing.

Great cut from Morgan's Spiral and Dark reverie and saying "It can't get more difficult than this" to Mad King's Clock Tower. Sadly for you, MKCT is still one of the easy ones. Once you remove the time element it gets really easy. The ones that will make you hate yourself are the "Not So Secret" JP in Gendarren Fields and "Chalice of Tears" in Ember Bay in Living World Season 3. The real name of the latter is "Skip Up the Volcano" and no one calls it that, even the devs and the guy who made it, it's just "Chalice of Tears" after the PoI where it starts since that's a way more apt name.

(think they have since fixed the work around) But after you figure out Clock Tower it's not bad, I think the biggest thing I hate about Clock Tower. Is just the waiting, between attempts. Plus it can take a bit each year, to knock off the rust first doing it again.

The entire Jumping Puzle is a cool concept, since it looks more like an "adventure" of sorts, but all the terrible jumps turns it into a bad experience.
Which is why Abbadon's Accent is my favorite JP in the entire game, a true adventure but without any bullshit jumps.

As a new GW2 player that is slowly working through the story (on LW2) I really like going from a little shitter to properly growing into an important politician/assassin/war crime committer
It reminds me of the classic WoW leveling experience, except where leveling was fun for me there and a chore here, but fuck I'm a sucker for a hero story
It's something I didn't find in retail WoW or free trial FFXIV and I thought was exclusive to classic WoW, a game I'm thoroughly burnout on thanks to the toxic community
The other day I accidentally stumbled into a 50 man achievement hunting group in a dungeon I was trying to solo an objective for the storyline and felt like a kid lost in the mall so I love the concept of ADHD wandering into random shit didn't go away because I wasn't doing map exploration anymore

I'm totally sympathetic. I always wanted to play a classic wizard in GW2 that is neither a Necromancer NOR an illusionist, which only leaves you with an elementalist. Also, Guardian is strangely a squishy class unless you spec it for pure heal/tank, especially since the FB tome nerfs. .........THAT SAID, the cool thing is these days there is such a variety of builds you can almost fake an archtype out of an unexpected class. - I can kinda pretend my thief is a classic wizard via Spectre now. I could go on with other examples but you get the idea.

So I just played the leveling experience on the human side (all the way through heart if thorns) and honestly the biggest issue with the story is just that: player involvement and the characters in vanilla. The plot is awesome especially in the second half of the character story (which I believe all origins collide to a single narrative at some point) and I legit got some goosebumps at certain scenes. However, after playing heart of thorns where it basically fixes all those issues the vanilla story had and THEN some, it's hard not to see vanilla story's age. CANNOT WAIT for Path of Fire and to start sinking my teeth into the multiplayer!

A real shame Anet never took the time to remaster their original launch content and with that the part of the game, that new players experience first. It's a bad look on the whole game. Once upon a time you could jump right into the story quest immediately after the tutorial instance. People would grind the story until they were too underlevelled to keep going, sometimes at the expense of map exploration. Apparently ANet thought this was a bad thing.
"...but instead of being involved you're assigned to sitting in a chair, watching it happen." Some of the writers have stated that they want to write a story anyone can get into by making the main character an everyman. Any personality, any personal development, any personal investment is given to the characters around your character out of fear of making the player character inaccessible to anyone. The "RP" part of the "RPG" was given to the npcs. There are a lot of named characters, many with actual backstories if you want to read them, and very few of them matter at all.

If anyone tells you to skip leveling in the first character in Gw2 then you should immediately stop talking to them. Not so much about it being bad or good. That is subjective. But leveling normally the first time will actively allow you to learn the game better. It is actually bad advice to immediately skip. It will make the experience worse for most people.

Tremendous amount of people quit gw2 during leveling (myself included 2x), and several bigger mmo streamers tried and gave up while leveling; they did not have any idea how the combat, the story, the visuals, the systems evolved :(
So the dilemma is that expansions are nothing like the base-game... Skipping leveling altogether might not be the best solution for everyone, BUT it works for *some* players.
Most probably these players are in the minority (and probably most of them are burnt-out mmo junkies)... but your backhanded take is a bit naive :/

    • @mormegil231
      @mormegil231 9 місяців тому +2

@@Woryen Ironic you call my comment backhanded and naive. It works for a very small percentage of players to boost. There is zero tutorilization if you skip (which is already not complete when leveling). The average player would be lost on the spot. Even Anet themselves warn you not to boost if you never leveled a character when using the 80lvl booster.
Also the vast majority of people like the general leveling experience. You might not and it is fair but most find it at least fine and teaches you game at the same time.
When you give general advice you advise on the general experience on people, not what might work on "some" people only or the professional streamers.
Also you say that expansions have nothing to do with the base game. That is not true. The expansions are an evolved, polished and perfected version of the same design philosophy of the base game. If someone does not click with the sensibilities of the base game, chances are they will not click with the expansions as well.

To say that the journey is what makes it not the destination, Guild Wars 2 does this well. Kill and interacts will happen , but the grind will feel like nothing. There's always something new to see, to plan out once you figure out. WoW classic for its time works, but it always boils down to kill 10 rats and kill this thing for whatever the quest giver says it is a problem, but forever.
Whereas Guild Wars 2 sells the illusion event of killing the dragon being real(let's not count the World Bosses, they are farm material), WoW Classic within the limitation, you know it is a videogame, Hogger is gonna spawn back, nothing ever changes at all. Unfortunately, the sad truth, the grind of WoW Classic is a comfort to most people. They work a 9 to 6 job, have 3 wives and 12 kids, they will grind in the MMO just like their 9 to 6 job, they will farm like for their 3 wives, they will pay for gold for their 12 kids(who become farmer later in life), because people want to be whipped, they want to be enslaved.
And as Asmonbaldy said that people like eating shit, pay for WoW Token GDKP, staying in the motherfuken boiling pot along with Honkai Star Rail Gatcha, dinner™ is indeed ready.

Just quit the game recently after picking it up a week prior.
I'm one of those guys that reads everything and sat through every cutscene, and I was not happy with the base story. It really felt like it was meant for people who've come out of a coma and have never read a book or watched a movie in their life. Boring, frustrating, and especially toward the end: painfully drawn out.
The leveling zones were just as weak. Hop from heart to heart? Sure that's satisfying somewhat, but the reasons they had to give to the player as to why you're doing anything in any area were pitifully weak. Again, written by someone who didn't care. "Just give them something to do," is something I imagined was echoed through the developers' offices ad infinitum.
Hit 80 and was gobsmacked by the amount of garbage filling up my bank and appalled that materials were essentially the way the game "rewards" the player without actually giving them anything at all. Oh and the cherry on that little dungheap was that it was apparently worse on release. Again, not impressed.
The combat is pretty much the only saving grace this game has over the currently big mmos in my opinion. It's great not having global cooldowns and being able to blow through skills almost like an actual action game. Fantastic job on that front.
Just wish the devs overall invested more heavily into a stronger narrative and focus more on the single player presentation, because that's always going to have more longevity. GW2 doesn't have the nostalgia to hold onto its players as much as WoW or FF, and I don't think the playerbase is going to get any bigger. Such a shame. Really like the game overall, it's just sad going into such a scarcely talked about game only to find out why no one talks about it. It's very much a 6-7/10.

Loved your GW2 first impressions video. Glad to see a followup! I'm sure this won't come as a surprise to you, but I think I can safely say that most in the GW2 community would agree with your criticisms of the early game. I'm sure there are a lot of players who tried the game briefly and were turned off by boring heart quests, no-challenge combat, and a rather uninspired MSQ. The only good news here is that the late game will probably surprise you.
For example, the first expansion: Heart of Thorns. No more boring heart quests. It's all been replaced with dynamic events. Better yet, each area of the map has its own sequence of events that players have to progress and these event chains tie directly into the MSQ, which still isn't great but at least features your character as the lead instead of just being along for the ride. The combat also ratchets up the difficulty so that you really have to learn enemy attack patterns and respond appropriately, and unlike WoW this isn't something you just do a few quests and grab some ilvl 1 million gear to overcome. Learn or die. This is also the expansion that introduced gliding and the map designs are appropriately vertical, essentially making them a gigantic playground for jumping and gliding around. There's even a map that consists of a gigantic maze of caverns where your map is essentially useless and players are expected to actually open their eyes and explore instead of following a path on a map from A to B.

Yeah, core story is just absolutely not a draw. It's a big part of why launch had such huge exoduses. The gameplay was still solid, but there was also no real endgame of any kind, so there was basically no hook at all. Not invested in the story *and* no endgame? That's a death sentence.

I have no idea why ..... but I really like the leveling experience in this MMO 🥺
I've leveled up multiple characters from 0 to 80 because it feels so chill and rewarding. Plus with each race I got to explore their world! The NPC's and their voice lines and heart quests.
So yeah ... I absolutely loved doing that and I would do it again! And also back when I did it, there were no mounts or gliders, and I never really felt like I needed to Google anything, it was just me and my friends fooling around, doing quests and chatting about things.
Can't say the same about this OTHER mmo where I was told "it's the best game ever, better than any other mmo" seems overly hyped up and isn't as fun as I thought it would be :/ I was disappointed trying to play it for 200 hours and I wish I could get my time back, because despite playing with friends, it was not that fun.
Guild Wars 2 managed to grab my attention and also allow me to explore
Even though in the end when I reached level 80, I loved to just customise my character with all the armour appearances 😂 and my content enjoyment shifted into the first expansion that got released as well as fractals and tried to get over my fear of PvP in WvW lol..... (It never ended well for me, I suck at PvP)
I guess in the end, I gotta say that this MMO is very dear to my heart and I love it. It's sad to see though that it's getting rather old with its optimisation and graphics :c and ...... dungeons

I personally find the leveling experience one of the best parts of it ..
Because all long term players just get tunnel visioned into gold farming and endgame .. and i dunno. I miss that part later on.
But i personally simply am also not a fan of dailies .. weeklies or scheduled content you have to do over and over and over and over and over...
But i do not represent the normal player base of GW2.
The new player experience is also not really bad as it made out to be for .. well jiggles.
Its a lot about trying stuff and exploring and getting to know stuff. Something a modern gamer seems to simply dunno how to do anymore, cannot touch a game that doesn't come with a meta guide already made. The game allows you to customize your build all the time, anytime so there are no wrong picks. The hearts quests.. aside from optional, also do help with the topic of world building, its just not shoved in your face directly. GW2 maps overall are usually just much better designed and varied and with tons of things on to the todo compared to what other mmos are even capable of. I do get different appeals, but by breaking the standards gw2 does stand out.
The biggest issue with GW2 is rather .. getting into the deep and nitty gritty is a gruesome process where a person will feel confused, badly informed and the game does a poor job of getting players into that. If i wouldn't have long term players slowly expanding my horizon, i would simply drop the game as i wouldn't be able to achieve a thing for meself later on. But that is stuff that usually all happens after the leveling experience.

In short? Because Anet abandoned this part of their content.
They've improved their game over the past 12 years by a lot. Added new mechanics for AI enemies, that make it more fun to fight them and they also injected A LOT of power creep as well as a ton of movement options like mounts and glider. Now the original map and content in it is beautifully crafted with a lot of care and passion. But they've never kept it updated. No updates for the minions with the new mechanics. No rebalance of the content (everything is brain dead easy and boring) and it's a shame that Anet let this part of their game - the first player experience - rot like that. Absolute shame.
And that's why I tell everyone, they should ignore the original content and hop into new content as fast as possible.

i do have to agree with not caring about the story characters at the start, they really skip over a lot of them and sprinkle in some main ones here and there, it isnt until he gets to about lvl 35 is when it starts getting more coherent, something to look forward to.

I've been playing GW2 since its beta and I have never in my wildest dreams that the Silvari is just San Andreas. The Avatar is just Big Smoke.

What? Nobody hates the leveling experience. It's incredibly easy to fast-track if you follow the player guide, and zone-clearing is actually fun, especially with dynamic events.
