I completely forgot about this great show. The Beachcombers a Canadian comedy drama television series that ran on CBC Television from October 1, 1972, to December 12, 1990. With over 350 episodes, it is one of the longest-running dramatic series ever made for Canadian English-language television. I remember watching this in the late 70s and 80s on TV here in Australia. It also had a very good and memorable theme tune.
The Beachcombers followed the life of Nick Adonidas, a Greek-Canadian log salvager in British Columbia who earned a living traveling the coastline northwest of Vancouver with his partner Jesse aboard their logging tug Persephone tracking down logs that had broken away from barges and logging booms. Their chief business competitor is Relic, a somewhat unsavoury person who will occasionally go to great lengths to steal business (and logs) away from Nick. The series also focused on a supporting cast of characters in Nick's hometown of Gibsons, often centering around a cafe, Molly's Reach, run by Molly, a mother figure to virtually all the characters in the series.

Thank you for that Edison Twins clip! I was a fan of the show for the first few years. The guest star in that episode was Winston Rekert, an actor that I liked more in a show called Adderly.
Adderly was about a spy trying to get back to active duty after being maimed by a baddie. He had a desk job afterwards, but a penchant for solving mysteries and spy things. The secretary in the office was in love with him and there was always a bit of will they/won't they about the show. It was usually shown late at night, so I stayed up to watch it!

One of, if not the greatest TV show of the 80s is Robin of Sherwood, with a killer score by Clannad. It blends paganism with the more well established legend. Inferring that Robin in the hood is the son of Herne a forest god. Nicolas grace is easily the best sheriff of Nottingham and the much lamented late Robert Addy as guy of gisbourne. I can remember my mother going all strange when watching michael preade and his flowing locks dashing about the place. I loved Mark Ryan who played the assassin Nasir who became one of the merry men, who inspired the inclusion of Morgan freeman in the diabolically awful Prince of thieves. In the last two seasons the role of Robin in the hood was taken on by Jason Connery while good he wasn't a patch on praede... This is easily the best telling of the Robin Hood legend.
Worst TV show ever has to be Celebrity juice, with the talentless moron Leigh Francis trying his hardest to be irreverent and Surreal and failing miserably... honestly the man's a Prick.

    • @susanscott8653

Yes! Robin of Sherwood! But Robert Addie, not Mark Addy, played Sir Guy of Gisburne. Every time I comment her, I mention RoS. They must be getting sick of me by now. 😆

Claymation animation shown on the BBC just prior to the Children's BBC segment in the very early 90's, called, 'Red and Blue.' Although, the proper title was actually, 'the Red and the Blue.' Which involved 2 anthropomorphic pieces of plastercine/clay that, 'talked', to each other in their own language, (although some keywords were in Italian), where the smaller blue would generally outwit the larger red, in the situations that played out. Each episode lasted for approximately 5 minutes and had an unforgettable theme tune.

Oh my god, I had forgotten all about the Pink Medicine Show! It was excellent.
The Secret Service is not well remembered because back in the days of ITV regional variations, only one of their regions actually showed it. Southern. Where I happened to live. So I remember seeing back then, but never properly got into it till it came to Vhs.
Two cartoons I remember from my very formative years that were on children's bbc1. 'Lassie's rescue rangers'. Lassie and a human family would rescue people who got into trouble in a mountain region. Lassie was quite big as a character back in the day. I wonder if modern generations have even heard of her now. And 'Josie and the Pussycats in Outer Space.' Which lived up to it's name, with the girl band from Archie comics off on an alien worlds. Latter sticks in the mind because in one episode they tried to get out of trouble by reading the script of the episode to see what danger awaited. Which was surprisingly meta for a cheap cartoon for kids. Both have probably dated a lot, but to my younger self they will always be a vote of 'excellent!'. upt segroutyy trrrthfraasRamerteo

I always remember one episode where they were doing that you've embarrassed bit. The line was '...and you've embarrassed Nicola Walker from the Last Train.' He said 'no I haven't!' and they cut to Nicola Walker herself who was in the audience, and she said 'yes he has! and I must find Ark!'. The latter being a line her character on ITV's the Last Train, which was ongoing at the time, would say a lot.

Not sure if you have mentioned this one before, but Channel 4's "Dream Stuffing" from 1984. It was about two women who share a flat in a tower block in the East End of London. Most memorable thing about it was the theme tune by Kirsty MacColl. It's bad.

I used to enjoy a Canadian show called 'ENG'. It was about the news crew of a TV station and ENG stood for Electronic News Gathering. You never seem to see it anywhere. Also, years further back, a friend of mine used to call round so we could both watch 'BJ and the bear'. It was about a long distance truck driver who had a chimpanzee as a pet. Ah, the obscure stuff is the best.

More Forgotten Canadian Content - I remembered this show existing in my childhood, but until recently couldn't remember many details about it, including its name and network.
Beyond Reason: a game/panel show where three psychics (chosen from among astrologers, graphologists, clairvoyants, and palmists) would, by asking questions to a hidden celebrity, try to determine who they were, or at least what they did. Absolutely weird, especially considering it aired on the partially-taxpayer-funded CBC from 1977 to 1980. (Unlike BBC, CBC TV airs commercials on most of its programming.)

I mentioned it in a previous videos comments and I've seen it mentioned in previous videos comments but an Underrated show would be Look Around You. It was a spoof of educational programmes you'd see on the BBC in the 70s and 80s.The first series took on short educational films while second series took a similar format to Tomorrow's World. It was filmed and presented very accurately to how programmes of the era were shot from the voiceover to the film quality. An odd show but still one that I watch clips of on UA-cam.

As a forgotten show I’d like to nominate Sunnyside Farm, a mediocre BBC2 sitcom starring the usually reliable talents of Mark Addy and Phil “Parklife” Daniels. Intermittently OK, it had a much better cast than the script deserved, including Matt Lucas and Michael Kitchen, as well as a theme tune by Blur. It lasted but one series, and all concerned seemed to move on to better things.

Forgotten, Super President, a 1967 Saturday morning cartoon on NBC. Made by DePatie-Frelung, a studio best known for the Pink Panther cartoons, part of the superhero fad that gave us Space Ghost and Birdman, similar style and format to the HannaBarbara shows of the time. Super President, a former astronaut turned U.S. President also had a side gig as a superhero in a generic red and white costume. His White House aide is the only who calls him Super President, his enemies usually called him Masked Man. The bad guys were always these strange alien looking beings, different one each episode, other than one reference to mutants during the first episode it was never explained why these creatures looked like they did. At the time the Left disliked the idea that an American authority figure was given this power while the Right felt it was bad taste to depict the President as a Superhero.

A terrible one for you: Totty, a dismal, dreary stop motion kid’s show about a Victorian peg doll and her friends in a little girl’s doll’s house. It was from some point in the 80s and had a plot where an evil porcelain doll sets fire to one of the other dolls who melts as she’s plastic. It’s unbelievable that someone somewhere thought. The kids are gonna love this!’

Been cat-sitting this week and so been going through a few things that have been sitting on my Plex for a while.
Lip Service: The lives and loves of edgy, early 2000s Scottish lesbians, analogous to The L Word and long before lesbians as a whole started seeing the glittering popularity they enjoy today. Gay men had their "Obh we're fine with this now" TV time in the sun from the mid-1990s and lesbian media was still very much like bird's teeth. I'd forgot about that one!
Girls On Top: When I was a kid and just old enough to watch The Young Ones on it's repeat run, this was a great extra amount of That Same Type of Anarchic Comedy, with the funny women I loved in the 1980s, French, Saunders, Wax and also appearances from Helen Lederer. It's ex-ex-excellent!
Happy Families: Again, post The Young Ones output from Ben Elton, Adrian Edmondson is sent off by his domineering mother, Dawn French, to track down his long-lost sisters all played by Jennifer Saunders, one sister per episode. The American one had a hilarious plot around a super-heavy wig and also featured an early appearance from Chris Barrie. Very underrated!
