Way back when, we went on a business trip to New England and found a bar that served what they called culls, they were lobsters that had been damaged, ie missing claws, and very inexpensive. It was a 2 week training course and we ate lobster every night, decadent but yummy !!! They were "whole" lobsters.
I got two medium sized lobster and a steak at the Bull Frog Inn in Belmopan, Belize for ten bucks American back in 2009 @@loniallorenz2009. If you ever go there, try the fish tea also!
The "bun" the lobster roll uses is called a split-top roll or bun. They are unique to New England. I can't believe you guys have never heard of clam strips! They sell them at practically every fish restaurant in the country, even Long John Silver's sells surprisingly good clam strips! Also, most people eat clam strips with tartar sauce and use the cocktail sauce only for shrimp and crab.
It's to bad you didn't have more time in maine, I am a commercial lobster fisherman. I live about 40 miles from Augusta. I could have taken you out on the boat to catch a few lobs and then stuffed you so full of lobster you wouldn't want any for a year. It's nice you got to visit the beautiful state of Maine.
You made it to my homeland! I am thrilled! The foliage was pretty good this year... "a roll they cut in half"?? Ha! That's a Maine style hot dog roll...it is buttered and grilled and the BEST! Allison it IS the best lobster you have ever had!! Eric come in the summer and I will personally teach you how to dismember a lobster...the one thing you missed was an authentic whoopie pie! where in Florida are you.....I wanna meet you! Thanks for visiting my home state !
Alison knows how to take a bite. This is a proper new england food blog. Love it you guys. From, A subscriber since 2017, notification bell is on and still watch every video.
this was so fascinating to watch as a new englander myself, the roll on the lobster roll is so common to find, I didn't know that was more unique to us!
Where I am from the butter with lobster roll is more popular than the mayo one but boy that had a lot of lobster. Also those are hot dog rolls. We have them in new england that way. They are great cuz you toast them. Those clam strips are without the belly. Alot of people don't like whole belly clams so they cut it out and make strips. Those looked mouth watering though. The clams they use are called Quahog clams
I live in Nova Scotia and I find the little cultural differences from Maine interesting, considering we're so close. We also have that type of hot-dog roll, but they aren't as popular as the more regular kind. Quahogs aren't eaten much, and nobody likes clam strips. It's deep-fried whole steamer clams all the way. The belly is the best part! I agree that's a very generous serving of lobster for the price.
When were you in Maine? I live about 20 minutes from The Red Barn. I would have loved to have met you! You should come in August sometime and experience The Taste of Waterville. They shut down our Main Street and local restaurants, diners and eateries sell their specially selected wares. There is music, a beer garden and other entertainment. Thank you for sharing your travels. Always a fun adventure!
It rained when I went to Maine as well, lol. Portland was beautiful! If you ever go there go to Holy Donuts! Apparently Portland Maine is known for their potato donuts.
No Mainers ever voluntarily go to Augusta, but you guys definitely made the best of it. Next time travel along the coast (and maybe try May, June, September or October for better weather and minimal crowds).
Ok guys.... next time you are up in my neck of the woods get the whole belly fried clams!!! They are the entire clam deep fried... can’t be beat! Clam strips are good, but whole belly are to die for!!!
Lobster Roll in New England is traditionally put on a New England style hot dog roll and grilled golden.. The strip clams are the clam minus the belly of the clam.
Lived in Caribou, Maine and Old Orchard Beach for several years. Loved the state. What you had was the clam strips with the bellies removed. The belly can be eaten as well although not as desirable due to the sand that can be found in them. They can be grotty if not cooked correctly. But the strips are awesome.
Cool video! That lobster roll!!! It looked so good. You should've got the foot long lobster roll, it would've been fun to see you two eating up the whole lobster roll with all the lobster meat! 😆😍❤🍻🍺
They sure love their seafood in Boston. Honestly the Lobster Roll looked like what dreams are made of!! Creamy and delicious. Now I want to vlog New England too- can't wait to see all the trees change colour in your upcoming vlogs!
That was awesome! I know I nag, but If you do get up to Vermont there are so many places to see. Lake Champlain, Ben and Jerry's. Rock of Ages Granite Quarry, Hope Cemetery, and Montpelier Vermont, the smallest capital in the USA. For eats, Wayside Restaurant on the Barre-Montpelier Rd. Last but not least the best Fall Foliage in the country!
I am disappointed that you drove right through New Hampshire and didn’t stop. Between Portsmouth at the sea coast and North Conway in the White Mountains as well as other quaint New England towns, you missed an opportunity to experience classic New England. Hopefully, you will get a chance to stop for a couple of days at some point in your future travels.
If someone is doing a New England road trip and stopping in NH, is North Conway a good place to stay for a few days? Also are both Vermont and NH necessary? Thanks for any info!
I have 3 lobsters in a pot i steamed a little while ago.. about to crack, dip, and enjoy.. Love lobster rolls, but nothing better than cracking and dipping in butter
Thank you for coming to Maine. I love watching your endless adventures! The Red Barn is awesome and Laura has many fundraisers to help out in the community. I live in Skowhegan about 35 miles NW of Augusta. Have a safe trip, Reno.
Your Lobster roll was on a "New England" style hot dog bun, common all over New England. Clam strips are awesome when fresh and not over cooked, also clam strip rolls are common around New England coastal states too. Travel safe.
I'm From Connecticut and I love New England clam chowder, but not too thick.I not a lobster fan yet did have a seafood roll one summer in Long Island, which was good.I do love clam strips with lots of tarter sauce, and stuffed clams are good.I do aslo love just fish&chips, although I like it made with medium or thin fish.
Two thumbs up…Enjoyed your trip on the Greyhound Bus….My mouth is watering looking at the lobster roll…..Safe travels….Cheers from Canada….The armchair traveller.
Hey you were not that far, I am just over the border in New Brunswick Canada, loving the videos, where I am close to the lobster capital of world Shediac
We are addicted to Lobster rolls haha! If we see it on the Menu, we have to give it a try! Although we have never been to the Northeast and try them. We are hoping to get up there sometime soon though!
I used to live in Maine and frankly Augusta is just a generic Maine inland town. I would suggest if there is a next time to go to Kennebunkport or Bar Harbor instead. Camden is quite charming as well.
The roll was under the clams & fries to absorb grease! They do it in the deep South, also. Wow! Haven't seen clam strips in SO long! But, Howard Johnson Motels used to sell clam strip baskets....that dates me. Anyway, safe travels to Florida...hope you get to Miami & the Keys! 👍👍👍
Road trip! That would be so much fun. Our little province in 🇨🇦is so close to Maine! Let's do it you guys 😃 Or.. we could meet in Greece again! - Trevor
My uncle’s family lives in that part of Maine and what’s funny, my parents and I stayed in the same hotel you guys were staying for my uncle’s funeral/memorial.
Nice video. One of my fav trips I ever did was to the coast of Maine. Stayed in Rockland and drove to Bar Harbor and Acadia Natl Park one day, then did Augusta and Portland the next. Is the Greyhound station in Augusta still at the airport? Rockland has a Lobster Festival in late July/early August I believe. I missed it by like 3 days lol.
4:09 there was a dam, the water once over flowed and went over the dam, also it caught on fire including the mills but the shops have been there at least since 12 years 363 days from the upload (according to my birthday) Nov 4th
The last time I went to Maine, I was not a Lobster fan. I'm envious. We make our own at home---Texas style. I wish Ya'll would have went to Vermont or parts of New H.
Omg congrats guys seeing you guys go from 14k to 160k is amazing. I would HIGHLY recommend going to North Conway in the White Mountains in New Hampshire next. Also, hello from Boston Massachusetts 😁

Clam strips are made from Atlantic Surf Clams. Whole Belly Clams are soft shell steamers with the siphon removed. Two different species.
