Henry needs more love, seriously
MissMisery I agree with you
Agree
Amen💜
Yes🖤
No one ever talks about James and The Giant Peach...smh. That was the movie I watched repeatedly as a little girl besides NBC and Coraline as a pre-teen.
Coraline is my favorite movie of all time, hands down, I love it to bits
I like it too. I wanted to see it in theaters went it first came out...but alas no one else wanted to in my family
+tripp cory I saw it in theaters, it was great
+I finally changed my goddamn name I bet it was. did u c it in 3D?
i also love this movie so much it is so great! also made a detailed review to thus awesome film :)))
Movie & Soundtrack Reviews You would have thought that the somewhat ditzy Susan from DEsparate Housewives could have made such a great and manipulative villainess?
Henry Selick is so underrated! :( He's such an amazing man. I wish he was as popular as Tim Burton.
DesTINY I agree with you
I do think Roald Dahl would have liked “James and the Giant Peach”. The reason he didn’t like “Willy Wonka” was because it was too light and magical compared to the intended darker feeling of the story, not because he thought it was a bad film. Both Tim Burton’s “James” and “Charlie” films have the feel that Dahl originally would have wanted, so he probably would have liked both.
You mean Henry Selick's "James" and Tim Burton's "Charlie", right?
I agree
@@Charles12 exactly...idk why people always credit Burton for Henry's work.
@@ShanyShannon The Nightmare before Christmas is Tim Burton's idea, that's why. Even thou he couldn't directed it. Even thou Tim was involved with James, it doesn't feel like a Tim Burton film. Thus Henry does deserve more credit.
You know that’s kinda similar to EB White not likely the 1973 Charlotte’s Web
I was 9 when I saw Coraline. Needless to say, I didn't sleep well after I saw it.
The commercial terrified me when it first came out I read the book and watched the movie in fourth grade I was terrified yet I somehow enjoyed it
Yeah got it on DVDs came with 3d bad decision
Lol I was 7
+I Sir Laughsalot That's funny, because I saw Coraline when I was 9 too, and i slept well :)
I saw it when I was 8 or 10 but I thought it was AMZING! Minus the part about when the mom turns into a needle monster 😣
Coraline is one of my absolute favorite movies
Mine too.
I feel bad for the guy who played James in "James and the giant peach" got bit by a spider and never acted again that's just said though 😅
+Dex Wishes Yeah. It's not as bad as what happened to the kid who played Charlie in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. He just gave up on acting and became a vet.
***** Wait really?!?!
Dex Wishes Yep.
One of my parents is a veterinarian and met the actor of Charlie once
Coaline is my favorite Stop Motion film. Oh and it came out on birthday so, guess what I begged my mom to take me to see on opening day.
I was always a little miffed that the Aunts survived in the movie. I remember cheering in class when they got squished to death in the book lol
It was more dramatic to have them follow James to NYC and try to take him and the peach back...
tripp cory Ehh, they had enough drama in the story already. In fact I think they actually cut out some threats. Like the army of sharks was reduced to one random robot, I can't recall if they had the cloud people, but the book's version were kinda badass.
They replaced the cloud people with skeleton pirates (the captain of whom is Jack Skellington).
tripp cory Which is nice and all. Prefer the cloud people.
Same
Someone needs to make a remake of Monkeybone with Nicholas Cage, Ben Stiller, Christopher Walken, and a Stephen King cameo in it. That would be awesome!
9:35 10:22 17:10
Wow, I had no idea Tim Burton didn't direct A Nightmare Before Christmas. Great video.
Tim Burton DID create it though :)
The Art of Lisa Nani actually it was based on an already existing children's book, so no, Burton didn't even direct it.
Burton WROTE the poem and wanted it to either be a children's book or a featured film. He still created it, directing or not. That's like saying J.K Rowling didn't write Harry Potter because someone else directed the movies.
TheGamerFromMars In the credits though, they put Henry's name
Well Tim wrote the poem wrote the story and did all the concept art and just created the idea!
Coraline is certainly one of my favorite films, both for its darkness but also it's emotion and whimsical moments. (Not sure which part unnerves me the most though. ^^; )
The book is also a fun read. :)
Heavenlyhounds96 I agree so much.
The Ghost children part is definitely the most unnerving part for me.
Henry Selick actually directed Nightmare Before Christmas and has become one of the most prolific animators out there, whereas Tim Burton took credit for everything and has now become a sad parody of himself
And now he has a new movie called Wendell and Wild
pitty for tim burton he was such a well visionary director until the late 2000's and 2010s where he truly lost his touch
How many people knew that Jack Skelleington and Monkeybone had cameos in Coraline before reading this comment?
No way!
I knew about Monkeybone. I’ll have to go back and find Jack
Oh my god, 'Lissy Dahl' was Roald Dahl's wife. In Matilda, she rescues a doll from Ms Trunchbull's house that she calls 'Lissy Doll'. There is no way that is coincidence.
Here's something about PEach that AniMAt forgot to mention. The writers of the film were Jonathan Roberts (one of the writers of "The Lion King", Karey Kirkpatrick, writer of several other children's films like "Chicken Run", "Over the Hedge", Charlotte's Web" and "The Spiderwick Chronicles", and STeve Bloom, who wrote a film with Jonathan Roberts called "Sure Things" but nothing exceptionally remembered today .
Disney is going down a dark road in animation right now. It's a shame they cancelled the production of the shadow king.
Rielle Russell Maybe they'll release it on their upcoming streaming service?
No they're not, frozen, Zootopia, Moana, Pixar films like inside out, coco, finding Dory, toy story 4, soul.
Coralline is actually one of my favorite animated movies!
I always thought I was super smart for realizing jack in the pirate seen now I feel ridiculous for not noticing Donald in the exact same scene
I just noticed that the other father have Monkeybone slippers. Nice!
storyteller is the definitive, authoritative biography of roald Dahl.
"There Might be Giants" hurt me.
lizardizzle Why?
Because it’s THEY Might Be Giants, not THERE Might Be Giants.
Ladies and gentlemen, put your hands together for there must be Giants!
I'm still waiting for the Rankin and Bass Specials video XD I hope that's counted as stop-motion
That company may get it's own lookback.
Plus, they made 2D works, such as Frosty the Snowman and The Hobbit.
***** that is why i think Rankin-Bass might end up as the hm's in this Animation Lookback:
This was a great video to introduce me to Selick, thanks Mat!
I ❤️❤️👍🏻 Coraline!
Coraline scared me as a kid. Now, it's one of my favorite movies.
thank you for the comprehensive look into the works of Selick. A major talent.
Bro these videos are fantastic. They're so in depth and well put together. You rock.
Am I seriously the only one who was never scared of the button eyes from Coraline? Yeah it's one of my favorite films but everyone I knew thought it was the scariest thing ever.
I personally find it scary, but not in a "I wanna hide" way. The movie is the kind of "scary" that's beautiful, and keeps making me watch the movie over and over again. Some people just don't understand that Scary doesn't mean Bad
Smarky Wolf Reviews it didn't scare me
I LOVE "James and the Giant Peach"!
I now NEED to see the Shadow King!
I was 18 (pretty much when it came out as well) when I saw Coraline and it still freaked the living shit out of me! (still does)
OMG, Selick worked on Pete's Dragon and The Fox and the Hound?
Soo Dahl never even liked the movie version of Danny, Champion of the World? That is probably one of my favourite films ever, not just a Dahl adaptation.
Animat 2 things
1. Ty for this list i hope we all get to see more of selick's work.
2. You realized that the reason why he didn't like willy wonka and the chocolate factory ( and this can be justified) is because that made huge changes to the book without his permission i understand if you and other people love that movie but it wasn't faithful to the book heck they changed the name because of the Vietnam War.
P.s animat please don't take this the wrong way as a reader most movies based on books can't capture the heart of the book some even insult the author and fans of the book, but as a movie it's a fun family film if you made a book or even a movie and somebody takes it and changed it too the point where they ruin the meaning of why it made it so great I'm sure you be very angry like roald dahl too.
My bad if its too long and preachy.
Dude it was a joke don't take things so seriously
@@KidSnivy69 what's the joke?
@@lancewang4923 The Chocolate Factory joke

You are correct. That is the correct spelling of her name.
he's one of my favorite animators of all time
I love that Jack cameo, for reasons, see the NC review
I was right! That song in Coraline was sung by They Might Be Giants! HA HA
9:04 darktown was about almost the same thing a guy in a coma puppeteer trapped in a world of puppets where he himself is transformed into a puppet and his wife threatens to him off life support so he must get back to his body and death tells him how and he is caught by a chess knight it is a cliffhanger there but it just ends there and to this day the writer did not write another issue
Nice review, Im watching the whole series and is fascinating, thank you
great lookback dude :)
Coraline will forever be my childhood and my favorite stop motion movie EVER.
Always had a love for stop animation of all film mediums
Glad to see that Selick is back to doing Stop motion 👍🏻
Hey this was pretty awesome! I'm going into a school of animation so this was really nice to watch!
I'm sure Jack Skellington's role as a pirate captain in James and the Giant Peach is a cameo.
Did Jack Skellington had a cameo in James and the Giant Peach?
Yes.
Spyder Soup he did
Evil undersea pirate
I was seven when James and the Giant Peach was released at the cinema.
My birthday is on the twelfth of April....so I share my birthday with this movie.
Its sad that the shadow king and the graveyard book films still didn't come out.
I enjoyed everything about this video until the part where you mention his work was halted! I want to see so much a movie by him of The Graveyard Book! I don't feel bad for him, he is a genius! I feel bad for me and not having the chance to see that movie! His work is wonderful!
Nightmare before Christmas is directed by Henry Selick... The story is Tim's, but the production is thanks to Henry. I noticed this was accounted for by the end, but the intro suggested otherwise.
this guys melody of speech..the way it starts and peaks in falsetto and then immediately death drops back into a usual register - it's fascinating, sorta like a backwards Norwegian... it's all I can think about right now
15:32 really, because in Wallace and Gormat curse of the were rabbit Wallace had a morphing scene.
yes! finally doing coraline! i LOVE that movie! please do a review on it
When I 1st saw Coraline, I was Scared out of My Pants!
"He still owns the rights to The Shadow King, and who knows? As you're watching this right now, he might've actually made the movie."
Me, in 2020, still waiting for anything: ;-;
2022: he got the rights back from Disney and is thinking of reviving the project
Monkey bone definitely feels like a Nicolas cage movie.
I want a Coraline sequel now!
I just saw MonkeyBone since the way you described it made the film sound neat, am I suppose to feel like I lost my mind after seeing it.
+cuddlykittehs I don't know, why?
I loved it. But then again, Nightmare Before Christmas was like... One of the first movies I had ever seen so maybe it's just that by the time I saw it, I had grown used to and to even love extreme weirdness.
Honestly they should've kept the designs from the book illustrator Quentin Blake for the James and the giant peach movie
Now I really want to see a movie of the graveyard book
I love James & The Giant Peach. It's so good.
Bern looking forward to this for a long time
No love for Slow Bob in the Lower Dimensions? I'm totally in love with that film. Whatever flaws there are, it's a beautifully unique little world he created.
See, one of the reasons Roald didn't like the '71 adaptation is probably because until he had written a lot for the movie he was unaware that David Seltzer had been brought in on the project.
I would love to see an animation look back on Rankin/Bass
I loved Monkey Bone when I was like 12.
Shit movie
Happy birthday!
That year in 2001, it was either Monkeybone or Spirited Away.
Spirited Away wasen't released in the U.S in 2001.
Spirited Away > Monkeybone
What
What?!
WHAT?!!
3:10
Soooooo......
I've seen MonkeyBone for the first time a few days ago.....
Am I the only one who kinda likes the film?
If not, I am ready for whatever words you have to throw at me.
Stop motion is pure evil. Whoever get the reference, you get one cookie!
***** Gravity Falls?
McKenzie Eby
Chocolate or Red Velvet?
I still don't get it.
McKenzie Eby
You got it right...
***** The Gravity Falls episode "Little Giftshop of Horrors", in the story "Clay Day". Do I get a cookie now?
Henry Selick is the director of the series Inner Workings on Lionsgate+.
wow. a spider ended his career. damn. if only the spider didn't bite him he'd probably be a star now
F in the chat for Shadow King
8:47 Makes scene because they are both Monkeybone and Conker are orange.
You do know that Roald Dahl was behind 'You only Live twice', the famous James Bond film adaptation.
The completely funny thing about Roald Dahl hating Willy Wonka is that he wrote it.
Actually, that's not true. He was originally brought on to write the screenplay for the movie, but got kicked out of it when he failed to meet deadlines, therefore having no control of the finished product.
+David Heald close, but bit quite. They hired another writer to revise and edit the script heavily, adding things like the gob stopper subplot, the fizzy lifting drink and infamous YOU LOSE! scene etc..
I don't who did ParaNorman but i believe that's a great stop motion movie, and I also have to mention that I love Coraline 2nd favorite stop motion movie next to Nightmare Before Christmas
One question I have about James and the Giant Peach is how these characters breathe underwater in the sunken ship scene.
I remember seeing Coraline as a kid. It was freaky but I still liked it, unfortunately it really freaked my Mum out and she forbid me from seeing it until I was 12. 16 now and I still love the movie.
what was the song being played during when you were talking about monkeybone
I'm I the only one who actually prefers Henry Selick to Tim Burton?
coraine has been my favorite movie sines it came out when i was 7
Not to be rude, but you remind me of Barry Goldberg
I get why Roald Dahl didn't like movie adaptions as I am very unforgiving when it comes to adapting books to movies (Don't hate me but I'm not a big fan of the later Harry Potter movies because they changed so much, also fun fact the writers room was biased as the guy in charge of the scripts' favourite character was Hermione and he gave a lot of Harry's smart ideas to Hermione)
Is no one gonna talk about how he said "There Might Be Giants" instead of "They" at 13:00?
I want a The Graveyard Book movie to actually happen
ANDY PARTRIDGE? OMG I'M RELATED TO HIM!!!!!!!!!!

lovely thanks for the video was looking for a history of stelil and this is exactly what i wanted. Try to work on your intonation and pitch it is honestly grating.
Fun fact: the money that is on other father shoes kinda look similar to monkeybone
I will never forgive Disney for doing this, 17:15 to 17:29 - cinder bite would have been a wonderful division at Pixar in releasing those films under touch stone pictures
I need to watch coraline again I haven't watched it in 4 years
wouldn't Wallace's wererabbit transformation count as a morphing scene?
i was 3 when i watched coraline and i thought i had had another mother and was very scared that she would keep me forever
Hi. I was just wondering if you have the opportunity, Could you do a Animation Lookback on the history of Ralph Bakshi?
What's the music playing when he's talking about Coraline?
Epic Logan Credits of Coraline.
I love Coraline! It's my fave laika movie
Can you do one about Robert morgan?
Spiders are the devil's creation I tell you.
