  • Mike Zegen spills all he's learned and enjoyed from playing "Joel Maisel" on the multi-award-winning Amazon series, "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel".

As Kevin always says, "lower your expectations". So, it was with great trepidation that I watched, "The Magnificent Mrs. Maisel". I had heard such great things about it, and I was worried that it wouldn't measure up. The only thing that I can say is that the praise was extremely under appreciative of this tv series. Wow! Okay, Rachel Brosnahan is talented beyond measure. She is so good that she just knocked it out of the park each time. I love, love, loved Tony Shaloub. Kevin, you were layered, and superb. The production values were so insanely good that it felt like a major motion picture instead of a tv show. The acting was superb across the entire cast. The music was phenomenal. Perhaps the best things were the little touches that just knocked your socks off. Zachary Levi (of "Chuck" fame) was delightful as the Jewish doctor that doesn't like people. Alex Borstein is an insanely funny comedian, but her turn as Susie Myerson is the stuff of legend. (She was onions. Pure onions. Layer upon layer of texture and intrigue until you just couldn't help wondering what she would do next.) Of course, the magnificent David Paymer is always wonderful. However, my favorite part was probably Jane Lynch, in a very nuanced role that made you appreciate her talent even more. If you haven't seen it, you are denying yourself a treat. My only complaint is that I wanted more, and watching it again and again makes you want to know the next step in the life of the Magnificent Mrs. Maisel. It's a treat.

Wow. I couldn’t stand Jane Lynch, her terrible attempt at a NYC accent, or the character. Have seen her in other movies and admired her comedic gifts, but not here. To each their own. Just wondering why you described the “Jewish doctor” when all the main characters except Sophie Lennon were Jewish, and many of the actors who played them weren’t Jewish. What’s up with that?

Both really good actors. Michael has appeared in many NY area produced productions like " Rescue Me", " Girls" , " Brooklyn", " Walking Dead" and " Boardwalk Empire".

Love the show but damn, way too many ad interruptions. Only sat through it because Mrs. Maisel just ended and Michael rarely gets interviewed in depth, alas. But since the podcast episodes went behind a subscription paywall, fuggedabout it.

They don't want to bother with video, any more? Well, sorry-- but I don't want to bother to listen.

Love all the Maisel characters except for Mike Zegen. As Maisel's husband, he seems like a kid playing dressup in vintage clothes. Sorry, but he does not look like he belongs in the '50s/'60s.

Weird how different perceptions can be. I feel the exact opposite - he has the vintage look and vibe and makes the part believable.

I feel the exact opposite. To me he looks like he really belongs in that era

As someone who was a kid living in NYC - and Jewish - during those years I find him very believable. More so than Rachel Brosnahan, who does a terrific job playing a quirky character, and who has tremendous charisma, but she’s in no way like women from that era. Her parents never seem genuinely like people from that era, ethnicity, and city, either. I love the show, but for all the talk, it was cast by people who aren’t from NYC and don’t remember the era. Michael is much truer to the time and place. As are Kevin and Caroline. I never felt a connection to the Weissmans, but the Maisels felt like exaggerations of people I remember. Luke Kirby also stood out as capturing the time and place.
