Sublimation on Wood: What is the best method?

  • I have been wanting to try sublimation on wood for some time. I thought I would experiment with different ways to achieve this effect and see which works best. This video is sponsored by Hiipoo, however, all projects and opinions are my own. Should you use laminating sheets on wood? Will sublimation work on wood surfaces with no coating at all? What about polycrylic? Will it work for wood sublimation? I am answering all of that and more! I am even experimenting with real wood, MDF, and even chipboard to see which will work best for your projects. So, be sure to watch and see which is my favorite method for adding dye sublimation to wood surfaces.

    For the wood wood project where the sap was coming through, I wonder if you painted it with one coat. Let it dry, then cover it with protective paper and put the heat press on it for a few seconds, then paint it with a second coat and repeat the process until you don't see the sap coming through. Then add the lamination sheet and continue. I wonder if that would help to cover up those sap marks.

    I know this is a late comment. On the polycrylic, you can rub the paper off with a wet sponge like mod podge. So it doesn't have to be a complete loss. You just need to be careful while rubbing not to go thru the ink. Then coat again with polycrylic and it will be vibrant again.

    Hi you did not mention the type of paint, or maybe the white ones were just pre-painted. "Rust-Oleum Do it Best High Heat Enamel" would withstand the heat (it's for BBQ grills) and it comes in white. May be worth trying. So first protect the wood with something that can withstand the temps. The big H is real wood (maybe pine). The little H is plywood (probably birch outer layer). That is another variable. Everything you showed was very helpful. thanks

    • @AngieHolden
      @AngieHolden  2 роки тому

      I did use some prepainted letters. I found that MDF worked best as far as the wood withstanding the heat.

    Ok so I have to tell you that with the Polycrylic let it cool longer and more but not all the paper will come off; and using a damp sponge or cloth you can gently remove the rest of the paper and the image (on mine) looked very good. Now for this next one I’m just assuming that it will do the same thing because you put polycrylic coating on top of the white paint I’m assuming you could do the same thing with that one too.

    Hi Angie, love your videos and your voice is amazing.
    I just wanted to ask what thickness, your laminating pouches are? I've tried this over and over. Followed your instructions to a "T", but they don't stick to the wood properly and peel off with ease.
